To be perfectly honest, I don't know if what Mariner and Jennifer had was really so much of a "tough" conversation. Awkward, to be sure, but if they wanted "tough", the episode could have delved deeper into how Mariner's separation anxiety is root cause of pretty much all her problems, and how it's even hurt her ability to form stable relationships, because in her mind, developing a genuine emotional connection with someone means living every waking moment in mortal terror that that person is inevitably going to get ripped away from her. So avoiding relationships is just all-around easier for her to deal with (basically, the ACTUAL reason Mariner didn't try to patch things up with Jenifer when she got back to the Cerritos). But the episode just looked the other way, and I really don't know why. I mean, yeah, the main goal here was to make fun of how a lot of characters in Starfleet relationships almost never see each other, due to individual duty assignments (Lower Decks never being too proud to swing for the low-hanging fruit). But they had a real opportunity here, and honestly...they kind of welched on it. And again, I'm asking, why? You've only got seven episodes left. What are you gatekeeping at this point? Does it really make sense for you to still be holding your cards to your chest now? At least, that's just MY thinking on it.

Don't like that Mariner was in a position where she NEEDED to be saved. I don't like it when bad things happen to her.

That Jennifer was effing with Mariner as the only way to resolve things. That's a nice touch. I'd say "sweet" but it doesn't quite fit with "chaotic, chaos-worshipping couple"

I like how much more independent Boimler has become, Mariner is a better mentor than I thought

Honestly I kinda instantly assumed Jennifer was messing with Mariner, we never saw Jen act like that when they were dating, it was very out of character. It became especially clear when Mariner explained how she just ghosted Jen. Definitely not a healthy way to deal with a breakup, Jen definitely crossed a line, but I think it makes sense personality wise for both characters. Jennifer liked Mariner for being toxic and rude, and Mariner liked Jennifer for the same thing. It makes sense that Mariner would eventually want to apologize for ghosting, she is growing more mature by the episode. It also makes sense that Mariner would forgive Jennifer for pulling this little social manipulation, because that's basically what Mariner used to like about Jennifer, and Jennifer did really apologize at the end.

Mariner wasn't T-H-A-T in the wrong, even if to SOME extent she still was, but she still found it in her to apologize.

So Captain Freeman is the one who basically sold out her own spawn and then turns the entire crew against her including her lover and not only does Freeman basically get away with nothing more than a slap on the wrist yet again despite being a consistent awful mom who's daughter probably would have been far happier abandoning star Fleet but her issues are so f***** up that she's never going to. Her daughter has such severe War trauma that she fears intimacy and has a hard time me forming meaningful deep connections with people and then the writers have the balls to act like Mariner was in any way responsible for Jennifer being afraid and ashamed of what she had done to confront it. I like that they try to make it sound as though they're discussing Mutual flaws but remembering what actually happened doesn't match what they're saying here. Also when you're the one who broke up with Mariner and then gives mixed messages to illicit a reaction your entirely too blame. It does such a disservice to Mariners writing.

My initial assumption about Jennifer was either that she went through a wormhole that messed with her perception of time and that made her think they were still dating. Or that it was an Andorian cultural thing that made her think that they were still together because for Andorians a huge screaming match and a one year absence of all communication does not equal breakup. Or third option that she was pretending one of those two things was true to sort of weasel her way back into being Mariner's girlfriend. Never did it occur to me that she was just fucking with her.

Jennifer was in the wrong in this episode. She just wanted to feel better about herself after being in the wrong so much.

BS on Jennifer in this episode. She knew they were over and why. She shouldve just stepped up and apologized.

"Everyone thought I was a traitor, even my mom." Everyone thought Mariner was a traitor because that's what Captain Freeman told the crew. Everything that happened to Mariner was 100% Freeman's fault. But the writers conveniently left that part out. This show really goes out of its way to overlook everything Freeman does wrong and absolve her of any guilt or responsibility.

Poor Jennifer. First she's mislead and manipulated by the captain she trusts into hurting someone she cares about, then Mariner forgives everyone but her and continues to hold a grudge for a year. She deserved better. The fact Mariner forgave her mom before even knowing if she regretted anything, yet Mariner refused to extend the same to someone used by Freeman, really makes Mariner look like an ass.
