- First leeward mark rounding in race 1 of the RYC Big Daddy Regatta. We come in on the starboard layline even with Bombora (orange spinnaker) on port right before the mark. Crew gets a clean douse in right on time and we hold Bombora wide for the rounding. Bombora makes the most of a tough position and rounds very tight into a lane to windward of us. A great example of the rules and tactics in action!
Anything we gained here we lost on the next leg as we got confused and headed for the wrong mark... but that's a different problem!
Nice positioning to the left with rights on the run. But looked like you gave most of your gains back with the late main trim after the mark. Very instructional video. thanks.
concur.. nice no-panic with the port tacker, but if you had a dedicated main trimmer during that rounding you wouldn't have given them that inside spot. Even using your speed at the mark to shoot up luffing probably would have closed the door. not bad though, hindsight is 20/20. :)
Yep there’s plenty of room for improvement still! Letting the traveler drop didn’t feel like a huge mistake on the water but the video doesn’t lie… amazing how much you can lose in 10 seconds
In my racing days, we used to let the traveller right down and lock off just before the tack / gybe which meant it was trimmed tight for the next leg. Could always ease if over sheeted.
Good learning video, if you have rights, use them. Should have pushed the outside boat way out so that you came in fat and out tight
Yes..a rounding thats loose on the inbound and tight on the outbound of the mark pays dividends!
Looks to me like the draft in the jib is very far aft is it a old sail? 🤷♂️
Lovely job.
Fighting tooth and nail for last place
