Linnea Sailing
Sweden
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 มี.ค. 2021
We are sailors Emmy and Marcus 👋🏻
After a season of sailing in the Caribbean, we decided to leave Linnea (our boat) in Trinidad and fly back to Sweden for the hurricane season. This allowed us to get an extra year of sailing and reach even more beautiful destinations for our second season of cruising. For now the goal is Greenland and back home to Sweden, via the Caribbean, BVIs, Bahamas, US east coast, and Canada. But who really knows how far our dreams might take us?
Welcome aboard our floating home Linnea to join us on our adventures!

#92 | Offshore to Greenland: Sailing with ICEBERGS (for the first time) | Linnea Sailing
This is it!! 771 nautical miles offshore across the Labrador sea. We are sailing from Twillingate on Newfoundland, Canada to Qaqortoq on Greenland.
The weather is quickly changing and passing between low pressure systems and timing the arrival to the ice limit is a tricky challenge. Compared to the other crossings we have done, this is also harder because of the cold. It takes a lot more energy to do stuff when it requires getting in and out of foul weather gear.
But seeing the icebergs, and knowing we made it, makes it so worth it!
Conditions like these are definitely not for everyone!
Hope you enjoy sharing this milestone with us!
Fair winds,
Emmy & Marcus

Great video! You mention a water generator. Can you provide some information about it? Thank you.
Thank you! We have a Remoran Wave 3 hydrogenerator :) We bought it for our first Atlantic crossing, and been very happy to have the extra power! @@linneasailing Thank you very much. I could not see one in the video. Another question: Is you hull insulated?
Great to tick that off the list! Goal😃
Such a huge dream and goal to accomplish for us!
What a journey!!!❤❤❤
It was so cool to achieve this!
What a good feeling that must be when you are arriving at Greenland. Well done😍
It was a crazy feeling!
Great video guys, the whale footage is some of the best I've ever seen from a youtube sailing channel. Brilliant.
Thank you so much! That means so much for us to hear that!
Wonderful video!! ❤❤❤
Thank you 🤗
I think you'd also like the Georgian Bay area in the Great Lakes region (about 80 miles N of Toronto), as well as the Desolation Sound area north of Vancouver. Then again, if I called Sweden home I doubt I'd ever leave those islands and canals, so I admire your willingness to get out and see the world, and to try new things. Never let the grass grow under your feet...!
We have actually never sailed in the north part of Sweden, which we believe is similar to what we experienced in Canada :) It's on our bucket list, both to sail more of Sweden, but also to come back to Canada one day to spend more time exploring! Thanks for the advice about the sailing spots, if it's anything like this, you are right - we would love it!
What a beautiful opening segment, amazing rock formations. Many thanks!
Thank you! It was absolutely an incredible place to stop at by the cliffs!
What a great idea using your pillows to protect the glass.
Oh, yes! That has been working great! We made it our entire trip and finished with nothing broken :D

Honestly, being foggy gave you two the most authentic east coast experience. I've been looking forward to this, what a lovely trip that was! ^_^
Haha yes! I don't think it could have gotten any more authentic than this :D It really was a very good trip with good company!
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos. Was sent here by RAN sailing and have now watched all you videos and have loved being invited along on your adventures. Thank you.

It was absolutely one of the most beautiful!
Such a beautiful area, ideal for yachts, thankyou.
Perfect for slow and comfy cruising!
It's refreshing seeing the area I grew up in from the eyes of people who didn't. Sometimes we take for granted just how pretty this part of the world is. I'm glad you two got to enjoy it!
It was really magical! We really enjoyed our time here with you :)
Love your cruising and story. Can't wait to see St John and Newfoundland
Thank you so much! Your comment makes us very happy to read 🥰

Thanks for the love!
I have sailed to Lunenberg as well and I liked it very much. I sailed south afterward and I found the water to be very cold with lots of fog on the way. Cheers, Richard
Did you have good visibility when you entered Lunenburg? And how did you do with all the lobster pots sailing south? 🫣
Great video!!
Thank you!
Hi Guys! Good you got the alternator install sorted ... but how could Balmar get this so wrong? You are not the first TH-camrs to document installation problems for a Volvo D2-55 which must be one of the most popular European sailboat engines installed in last 20-years! Hope you have kept the old alternator and pulley in case that system fails in some far away place. Think we'll stick with the standard install until Balmar (or a competitor) produce a kit that works 100% with no worries and provides acceptable customer support. Thanks for sharing :-)
It really is a mystery how then managed! They blamed the supplier who apparently had changed something in their manufacturing process or specification :P We definitely saved the old one as a spare! :D Do you also have the d2-55 engine?
@@linneasailing We do but with the later standard 115A Mitsubishi alternator and carry a spare alternator too. Good chance that somewhere along our liveaboard journey, the alternator will fail. The 115A alternator limits at around 80A when warm. We have 600Ah Lithium with mostly Victron components however chose a Renogy 60A DC-DC charger for alternator as Victron product was a super-silly price at the time. Very interested to see how you get along with the Balmar. We're a power hungry boat and can always do with a bit more from the alternator. Thanks again for sharing 🙂
That's a nice set up :) Our original alternator only produced around 30A when warm, so this is a huge difference for us! With the new one we get out about 120-130A and it's rated for 170A. The more energy we have, the more we use! But it was a real treat to be able to use the induction hub to save gas and run the water boiler to take a hot shower when it got cold. It would have been impossible with the old one!
I am happy that you were able to solved the installation problem. I did a similar upgrade from my stock 60 A alternator to the Balmar 170A earlier this year. I have a Yanmar engine so I had issues. I will recommend installing a remote DPDT toggle switch wired to the regulator so you can operate in small engine mode, or Float mode from the cockpit with the flip of a switch. Safe travels
We have thought about doing an installation like that 🙂 I’m taking it that you have one and are happy about it? Have you ever felt the need to use it? Thanks for the tip!
I am think of doing a similar alternator upgrade. Maybe it would be good to pass on Balmar. Btw your install looks very nice.
Cannot say we are very pleased with the support we got, but the alternator works great! If there is another option for your engine and you value good customer support if something is not right, then I would look at something else as well 😉 But either way it’s really nice to have that extra charging capacity!!
Festool, Wera, Kamasa, best tools!
We are super happy with all of them!
What would you have done? Sent the stuff back to Balmar or tried to fix it?
if you arive on the port ( from a boatferry from madeira) where and how do you rent a scooter? Can you ent it at at port/habour? Or must you walk towards a rental?
We walked towards the city center! From the port the city center is in the direction towards Madeira, along the beach. If I remember correctly we had pre-booked the scooter so it was just to pick it up! Really cool experience to drive around the island!
@@linneasailing thanks for the answer. How long is that walk? (From the port the city center) Due the fact we only want to visit for 1 day
I think it was about 15 minutes :)
❤❤❤❤
😃
Does the survival suit have the optional mitten that has a separate index finger? I saw a type like that and wonder if it's actually useful.
This suit has removable mittens, but it only came with this kind.. If I remember correctly, the other suit we got has non-removable mittens but has the index finger. I honestly think that wither way it's very hard to do stuff with the mittens on.. It's like wearing a thick sock over your hands 🫣
How do you find that sewing machine? I just bought a PFAFF 360 to do some boat projects
It's great! We love it! It's been a great equipment to have on the boat and it has been handling the canvas projects really well!
Your Volvo is spotless as suspected, you take the best care of Linnea. Miss seeing you guys in the blue waters of the Bahamas !
Thank you! Good eye there to notice ;) :D Miss you too!

Hi Anna! 😃 Tack för tipset om The Shore! Vi hade en fantastisk kväll där i fredags 😃
Yes nice ! We continued up the Hudson, the Canadian lakes and down the Mississippi. But that was in 1991 with a 28 footer from Nederland.
Oh that must have been great! Would love to see the Hudson and the Canadian lakes one day!
@@linneasailing Yes there is allmost too much to see and do. But maybe you should have visited Ellis-island (Statue of Liberty). The museum there tells and shows the story of the first wave of mainly european immigrants. Everyone saw a docter and was registered. You might have found your family name. Ciao.
Oh yes! The friends that were with us had found some family there when they visited a couple of years ago. Unfortunately they didn't allow for us to take the dinghy there and our budget didn't allow to take a ferry over. We will have to save it for the next time :)

@@linneasailing Not a lot, but worth keeping a careful eye on surroundings.
I agree with the other comment - your fellow sailors are looking for information about which anchorages worked well

Always having fun ;)
Welcome to the Chesapeake, with your 6+ foot draft. Many years ago we said a Welcome to the Swedish boat CANTELLA. It was the start of several years of a great friendship. Torsten wrote several books about their cruising. I asked if my husband and I were in the book. He said I'd have to get the book to find out. Last year I was able to get the book from Sweden and in Swedish. I only speak English but Google speaks them all. We were there in the book. We had lost contact, but with the internet I went looking again and learned that both are now gone. Wishing you fair winds (and deep enough water.)
Thank you! I've never heard of Cantella, but will sure look it up! How cool that you are in their book, and good thing Google could do the translation ;) But sad to hear that they are both gone! If I read the book, how do I recognise you?
Thats a helicopter carrier, not a US aircraft carrier. It's likely a WASP class but could be an America Class if one happens to be on the east coast. ( Last I knew both were on the west coast )
Oh..
@@linneasailing it's crazy how large they are, the aircraft super carriers are even more massive. Those helicopter carriers are about the same size as most countries "aircraft carriers". Look up "US Wasp class LHD" and "America Class amphibious assault ship" -"The Wasp-class is a class of landing helicopter dock (LHD) amphibious assault ships operated by the United States Navy"
This is pretty cool actually :D Thanks for the explanation!
Its not usually gray. I spend much of my time out there wearing sunglasses. If you are heading north, Reedville is a nice spot to anchor.
Glad to hear in! I think we might have been there a bot early in the season to fully enjoy it...
