Hi all! It's me Sinnamon. I'm a 20-something trying to maximize my investments in MYSELF! Right now, I share my spending habits on TH-cam because I believe that what you spend on can tell an interesting story about your day, how you got to this point, and your future goals. I'm still getting comfortable on this channel and I hope to be able to share more and more over time. Thank you for listening to my story 💙

Good Afternoon, watching after work. Catching up on videos.
@@moneywithjustliving5258 Good afternoon! Thanks for watching 🩵
Hi Sinnamon. It’s so interesting for me to see and understand your stock payouts. Thank you for taking the time to explain it. I think that is awesome that you already funded your Roth IRA for the year the first month of the year.
@@PiggyBankTales thanks for watching 🩵
Are you able to do a tax election? I know some equity awards allow you to get taxed at grant (when the fmv is often lower), rather than when it vests.
@@ticondy I can’t thank you enough for bringing this to my attention! I’ve never heard of this and had to do a bit of reading. Unfortunately, my company doesn’t support this and even if they did I missed out on the election window. But it’s great to learn something new and will be something to call out when I switch companies 🤩 Thank you! 👐
Nice payout, that's a great market gain! Are you still able to do a Regular Roth or do you have to do the backdoor Roth now?
@@georgewilliamsjr173 Depending on whether I keep my job for the whole year I may or may not be eligible for a regular Roth. However doing the back door is really easy so I’m going to always do it back door from now own just in case. Thanks for watching!

new sub here :] enjoyed your ynab vid ! looking forward to your future uploads <3 selena
@@debtisdumb welcome! I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos too 🫶
Hi Sinnamon. I learn something new all the time from watching others use YNAB. From this video I learned that you can click on the available funded category and click move, enter the amount to move from that category and then for the move to section you can type the first few letters of the named category and it will pop up. I have always clicked on the move to and scrolled down the populated list to find the category. My mind is blown. 🤯 So thank you!
@@PiggyBankTales I’m glad! There so many YNAB shortcuts and I’m always still learning. My recent favorite one that I learned from millennial miss was seeing that you can cover overspending by clicking reset available amounts to bring the red category back to zero. Can’t wait for your next video :)
Hey Love! Catching up on your vids. Listening as I work 😊
@@BoopnBudgets thanks for watching. I’m posting some more tomorrow 🙊

“Where did the money just go?” And “what did I just do?” Are two famous questions by all YNABers. 😂😂 New sub here. I started to toy with a holding for next month category back in November but when I remade my new budget with less categories, I didn’t opt to have one although it still might be a good idea because at the end of the month I should have some money that I rounded up with. Great video!
@@PiggyBankTales I’m very pro a month ahead category! I watched ur latest video just a bit ago and was thinking to comment about how using a month ahead category can help you with your situation saving for rent the month before you pay it. Thanks for watching :)

Is your paycheck grossed income? Or is it after-tax?
@@Robert-cc3wr I show both gross and after-tax in my videos. Right now it’s 6729 gross and 5216 after taxes only. Thanks for watching!
@ awesome, thank you! I’m new to the channel and I also work in tech. I’ve been trying to organize my finances better so this is helpful. Also, the tax is so little compared to what I get taxed in CA.
@@Robert-cc3wr welcome to the channel! My taxes may be lower because 1. I hit the social security contribution max so I no longer get that taken out (~350 back per paycheck) and 2. I’m maxing out my 401k and HSA which reduced my taxable income. I’m also in CA
@@sinnamonstory dang. Maybe I’m doing something wrong because after my biweekly check, it comes out to $4200 after tax (175k salary) hmmm. I’ll take your advice and maximize my 401k contributions to reduce taxes. Thank you!
@@Robert-cc3wr Are you adding back in the amount you contribute to your 401k? After all deductions (including taxes, my 401k (~1009 per paycheck), and health insurance), my paycheck is $4000. Definitely look over your paystub to see the breakdown!
I had the same realization about FIRE, what will really grow my investments is just time/years to allow for what I invested to grow. Leaving the investments alone and just using my income would be easier than to live super frugally for years. That being said, work is work lol😂
@@minimalmiss yes finding the right work as the time passes is the most important part now once you hit coastfire. I’m enjoying seeing the new ways your are spending your money :)

@@sinnamonstory YAY
I don't understand why your rent bothers you as a percent of your spending. Your rent is a very small percent of your income which is what matters.
@@TurnerBoneHead I don’t really think about things in terms of percentage of my income but rather in absolute terms. This is actually a very big difference I have with my friends (and a lot of what I see in the personal finance community) and made for a good discussion we had recently. We were talking about how some people may want to get nicer cars when they can afford it but for me I just want a basic car that gets me where I need to go no matter my income. I feel the same about housing. I don’t ever want to own a mansion even if I could afford to. However, when I can afford my style, trust and believe my closet will be overflowing 🤣 With my rent now, I think I feel the sticker shock not because it feels unaffordable for me but because I’m renting a room and have a few roommates. I think my housing is expensive for what it is. But that’s becoming less true with time. Since my landlord hasn’t increased my rent since I moved in in 2022, now in 2024 I feel like I have a pretty good deal for my area! Hope this helps you see my perspective more and thanks for watching :)
As an "international student" it was very difficult to accept that I wouldn't qualify for financial aid like the rest of my friends. I'm still very grateful with the education and help I got in CA. But that whole process is crazy and there are so many things/rules one doesn't know about. You are in a great position! I've stopped caring about income and promotions 😅
I've stopped caring about increasing my income*
@@minimalmiss oh wow it’s crazy how small the ynab community is but how many parallels you can find with other ynabbers. Were you an international student all throughout college? The fact that you managed that and are debt free now is so inspiring!
@@sinnamonstory There was a law called AB540 where I believed I qualified for in state tuition but with no financial aid and I took the community college route as a non-resident student. Finally got residency to apply for the last year🎉
Start a playlist of videos on interview prep. I’m in the same boat and I would enjoy following along.
@@crackintosh thanks for this idea! I definitely also like knowing about other people’s study plan. Are you a software engineer as well?

@@crackintosh exciting stuff! there will probably be some overlap for sure then. neetcode's channel is an amazing. i'm also doing the 150. 40 more questions to go 🥲 good look to the both of us 🫡 we got this!
Why on earth would you quit your job
@@ireneroland3070 So many reasons but they mainly come down to moving to another company for better pay and growth opportunities (quitting would let me have the time to study thoroughly for interviews) and more time to work on my business without any legal conflicts. Thanks for watching!
you're always an interesting watch...keep it up. You made me realize my budget is a mess and I'm spending way too much on certain things 😐
@@chocOneOOne haha thank you for watching! Budget videos always set me straight on my spending too but spending is also personal so maybe you are just fine? I’m curious, why do you feel like your budget is a mess?
@@sinnamonstory I think I've had the same categories and breakout too long, it feels like I'm tracking and not budgeting. I mean I can't even follow what you're doing with yours half the time. I think I'm too granular in tracking spending. I spend too much time breaking up things like amazon or what restaurant I went to. As long as I've been doing this I feel like it should be more mature than it is.
@@chocOneOOne I definitely feel you about just feeling like you are tracking and not budgeting. I felt that way just constantly covering overspending instead of committing to a number to spend for a category. Keep experimenting and you'll find a routine that works for you and even after that your feelings might change and you'll need to experiment again! I'll go slower and try to be more clear with future budget videos so they are easier to follow. 🫶
Nice job restructuring to stay focused! Inspiring
Thank you! Now the hard part begins--sticking to it 🤞. I hope your August is off to a great start
I love sitting through your finances, but is there any chance you can increase microphone volume sometimes to hear while listening and working.
@@shadowpig60 I’m gonna keep working on finding a better mic set up for my next video. Thank you for letting me know!
Agreed. Yes please
you have your shit together, you'll accomplish everything you wish. There is no short-cut for experience and you just need to keep putting in your time and it will come. I'm a firm believer that great managers aren't built they're born. It's not for everyone and high performers can have a hard time letting go. I can't imagine talking or thinking like you when I was your age though, but wish I did.
@@chocOneOOne I’m trying very hard to have my shit together but I’m far from it. Finances are one area for me that I tend to have together bcuz it’s quantitative and that works very well with my mind. I definitely have been training my management skills for decades now as an older sister to younger brothers 🤣 I’m only able to figure things out from learning from all the people before me so I’m really grateful and hope I can help speed up some learning for others! Thank you for watching :))
What program are you using to crunch these numbers?
@@deerine it’s called you need a budget or ynab for short!
Good Talk! Please don't throw away good money until you have something else secure. Your community will come. You are correct on knowing that you are not prepared for what life throws at you but you have an amazing start. I recently needed a hip replacement at such a young age and not having my whole medical deductible was unfortunate. I absolutely needed to rely on the people in my circle to help me walk, eat, and take care of my natural needs. Please don't keep your money in a regular checking account. Put it in a HYSA like Ally or SoFi and make your money work for you. Take care!
@@christinemitchell6210 getting something secure would be so hard and my patience is tanking which certainly isn’t good 😬 but I do agree with you. Are you considering getting your nose job done in Korea?
@@silkalmony5357 I’ve considered it historically but I decided I’d rather splurge on an American doctor who I can easily meet up with a few types to get aligned on the same vision.
