The Hazelrigg Brothers Live 12/02/2023
The Hazelrigg Brothers Live (Audiophile Musicians)
I'd like to recommend musicians that deserve greater exposure and should be of interest to fellow Audiophiles.
The Hazelrigg Brothers are George and Geoff Hazelrigg (piano and bass) and John O’Reilly Jr. (drums). They released their latest album SYNCHRONICITY: An interpretation of the album by THE POLICE earlier this year and it has been a mainstay on the Billboard charts since then. They have a unique take on their sound that some would classify as jazz but the brothers would demur since they have a largely classical training and background. I also would highly recommend their previous album Songs We Like which is available through their label Outer Maker Records.
www.outermarkerrecords.com/cdvinyl/p/hazelrigg-brothers-synchronicity
They are very fastidious about recording and only use two microphones to record their albums. In addition they make use of recording interfaces that feature the legendary D.W. Fearn's designs. In fact, the Hazelrigg Brother's day job involves the production of D.W. Fearn's recording devices as well as more mobile friendly versions under the Hazelrigg Industries moniker.
All recordings are made straight to high resolution DSD and can be downloaded at these resolutions from NativeDSD. They have also recently branched out into the world of surround and posted a Dolby Atmos mix of Synchronicity to Apple Music. They have a new album in production and if you listen carefully to my video, you will get a sample of what they have in store.
I was very lucky to be able to record a video of a recent concert and I have posted it to TH-cam for others to enjoy.
Please support such innovative artists by buying their albums so they can produce more music for us to enjoy on our audio systems.
Happy Holidays from DIY HiFi Life

    Viva! Rega arm!

    I cannot believe that placing the table on a cutting board and those silly springs are improving anything but smearing the signal coming from the AR. Years ago I remember walking into an audio dealer in a suburb of Chicago who were an early adopter of Rega turntables. Owner wasn't in but a salesman new to the shop and specialty audio showed me a Rega 3(there were only two models back then) that was sitting on one of those VPI isolation platforms with springs and a Sorbothane platter mat. While auditioning the Rega we removed it from the VPI-plat and right away noticed the imaging, solidity, improved. Then we removed the sorbothane kaka, and put back the felt mat and again, dynamics improved and a sort of dulling of the music disappeared.

    Cheaper and more effective mod: Unscrew plate only 3 wires to figure out where to combine it together. Use buy 2$ car pure banana size car copper lugs snipe back flat circle to fit 2 clip size like the clip connectors they used to plug in old wire. Eliminates fuse and all the junk steel in the signal , gets rid of most of the ringing/hissing extension of tones. Key thing is reversible without spending a hundred on the fore mention mods.

    Thanks for this video. I just built it to replace the bigger and power hungry Pi 4B based Roon endpoint. This sips like 1W - so the yearly consumption should be less than 10kWh! One minor issue I ran into: the OTG adapter you reference makes for a tight fit because the ports on the Zero are spaced for narrow micro USB, not the wider USB A connectors. So, I used a dongle style adapter instead.

    The rewards of saving these Ar's or any turntables is outstanding to say the least! Then you get gobs of more years of more wonderful music to listen to. New music mostly sucks and then some. Take your time tweaking. Less coffee is better. A lot of the better turntables have microscopic screws etc. There is no room for errors.

  • @VintageGearMan
    @VintageGearMan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Update! I just spent at least 2 hours tweaking my tone arm. I was having a horrible time for no reason suddenly keeping the tracking weight correct. Turns out the barrel pivot grease had turned to sticky goo and so I had to back off both tonearm pivot screws "carefully " ( They are tiny! Do not lose them! ) and lift the tonearm off the vertical shaft which also has has a tiny Derlin washer on the end of it! (Do not lose that either!) Be careful removing the center tone arm shaft also for there are bearings that could fall off on the floor if one sticks to the shaft pulling it out.! Game over if you cannot find them. I used Lubriplate #105 after cleaning the barrel pivot. Then after all this, there is a matter of tweaking the tonearm pivot screws and the vertical shaft to the right tension. Trust me it is worth it spending the time on this turntable. It is now playing perfectly again. AR XA turntables rival Thorens any day of the week. Double album Super Tramp Live in Paris with a vintage Shure V15 III cartridge is heavenly on this turntable at 1.25 grams tracking weight.

    I have been running turntables my whole life. Age catching up now but honestly nothing like original analog records. There are a few exceptions. (1) Bridges To Babylon by The Stones. (2) Red Molly Love and other Tragedies off the top of my head that are digital recordings. Maybe not from the get go but still ended up on a cd.

  • @VintageGearMan
    @VintageGearMan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The AR XA used to be used by record companies to review the master copy LP's before giving the ok on mass production as I understand.

  • @VintageGearMan
    @VintageGearMan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The AR, XA is massively quiet between tracks and during songs thanks to the the 3 point spring suspension system and are adjustable to be sure you are 1/4" between the "platter and the plinth" evenly no load. With a record should be about 1/8th inch distance. Buying (The Q Up) automatic tone arm lift for mine so it picks the tonearm up at the end of the record soon.

  • @VintageGearMan
    @VintageGearMan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you want to do the acid test on tonearm tracking on the AR get ya any in great condition K-Tel album with a million songs on it and super shallow grooves and if you are set up right it will not skip or hang.

    You will be amazed by the difference in sound that turntable mats can make though.

  • @VintageGearMan
    @VintageGearMan 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If serviced it is an off the charts amazing turntable still! Just installed a vintage Shure V15 III on my AR XA and tweaked tracking to 1.25 grams and it is blowing my mind. "Hint" if a said record sounds slightly less lively try an acrylic mat. Will give you tight bass and more detail on the top end of the frequency range. If a record is a bit on the bright side lay a cork or wool or rubber mat on the platter then the record of course.. It is amazing how much control you have with this turntable and it is a super winner for recording to tape or possibly with a in line phono pre-amp to digital. For me once that happens ( digital) game over. Analog rules from the original source period.

    Have any of you actually upgraded / modified the passive crossover using better parts / values? If so, what did you do? How did it improve their sound? Can the "active crossover" be used to replace the internal stock crossover? If so, what did you do and how did you do it? It would seem that you could use an active crossover to connect to each of the two mid & treble panels, while bypassing the bass to REL subs that would allow tuning of the crossover points. Has anyone done this? If so, what did you do and how did you do it?

    I think it's funny to note the meager fuse wire supplied (and found satisfactory) by the makers of Magnepan is being questioned. Yet our enormous overkill speaker cables, are not. Our expensive cables must be right (perhaps to justify the cost) so the fuse must be wrong. Thinking outside of the (speaker) box imagine producing a new line of ultra thin speaker cables (could still be expensive, 😉) that everyone must now get to correct their systems.

    I've had Maggie 1.6 for over 20 years and never blew a fuse. I think at this age the risk is low enough to remove them. I either am putting better fuses or just going to redo the crossover and just remove fuses altogether.

    i have DIY 8 inch in transmission boxes 2 ohms and 1 ohm rated speakers. They are made in Serbia and those sounds absolutely fantastic. I do have handmade germanium stereo amp at 2 ohms. at about 40 watts. Also i have various NAD amps and recievers that can handle those speakers without any problem, but the sound is dull and not that detailed in comparison with germanium amp. In germanium amp ther are main 2x4 AD 161/162 transistors in amp section and drive BC 187/188 transistors. In general i am looking for a good class D or class AB amp handmade or factory amp.

    Regardless of age, if a turntable is good, it's good. Some modern gear is nothing more than a rip off of tried and tested designs. Let's be honest, a turntable is a basic device spinning a platter with a minimum of two speeds and holding the speeds constant. It's not rocket science for goodness sake, and to manufacture one is not a difficult process in this day and age. Its just that some people try to tell you that you need something fancy and elaborate that costs thousands upon thousands of pounds when in reality you don't. The AR, along with many other older turntables do a very good job of dragging your rock through the grooves of your precious plastic.
