    This is a great no nonsense fact filled video- no fancy editing or large ego- all beef no filler. Thanks, this has been an extremely useful video. I'm still trying to get my head around Roon and make the final jump and join the streaming revolution- I am now far more informed about the awesome power of this amazing piece of software that to my eyes now looks to be the most important investment in creating a successful transition.

      Thank you for watching. Appreciate the kind comments. As I said in my video, one should think of Roon as another piece of HiFi equipment component. It's more that just some software. Good luck.

    Thanks Chris for a very informative video. I learned about convolution filters and bookmarks and will put that to use immediately. One bit I can add regarding the CD ripping, it only works for users running Roon core on a linux system. On Windows or MacOS you need to use some other program to do your cd ripping. I got that clarification from Roon and they have added that stipulation to their help files now.

    I’m using Roon now. I think for most people it is overkill. If you have multiple devices (‘end points’) in mulitple rooms, and more people in the family.. then it is wonderful. Another great product to combine with Roon is a Raspberry Pie, with Ropieee installed. You can attach the pi with usb to a DAC / pre-amp... it will forward the data bit-perfect to your DAC. For the audiophile who also loves to fiddle with hardware and settings it is brilliant. If it’s just for organizing and playing some music on a single device, I’d go for something easier and smaller (and cheaper).

    I really enjoyed my 3 month trial using an Allo DigiOne Signature streamer, but I cheaped out at the $500 level, it's now $700, but it's going to $830 on Jan 1st, 2023. I just started another 3 month with just a little over a month to pull the trigger on the new low price of $700. It's great when you have friends over, as it's super easy for everyone to pick tracks, I can't remember, but I don't think guests even need to download the app, not sure how it worked, I just remember it being super easy. As you can tell, I'm talking myself into it. I never got dramatic results using FIR filters after spending a lot of time in REW, Math Audio Room Correction is the absolute best and easiest I have ever used, it is free in Foobar2K, you need a calibrated mic and filters can be imported/exported

Do you feel 10-year old rips of my CD library at 320kbps (some highest ver though) and some FLAC will sound much different than HeOS or other low to mid level streamers?

    @pauldickinson1754 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been using Roon about 6 months now and have been really pleased with it. This video did show me new features. Regarding surround sound, I have two Roon endpoints - a Bluesound Node 2i and an Allo DigiOne. There are no multi channel outputs for either of these devices. What endpoint are you using to get surround sound?

    • @DIYHiFiLife
      @DIYHiFiLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul. Thanks for watching. For multi-channel audio I am using Roon Core on an Intel NUC running the ROCK OS (ROON OPTIMIZED CORE KIT). The NUC has a HDMI output which ROCK will use to stream the multi-channel audio. I use a Emotiva XMC-2 Processor to decode the surround sound. There may be other devices that have HDMI output but this is the easiest way.

    • @DJB99
      @DJB99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the question was “what endpoint are you using to get surround sound”, not what Core.
      I use a Denon AV amp as my multichannel DAC, connected to my Roon core via HDMI.
      It’s not really described as an “endpoint” in Roon’s own terminology because it is directly connected to the core. An endpoint is a device separated from the core physically, that communicates with the core via Ethernet, or Wi-fi.
      There are not many Roon certified endpoints that have multi-channel out. One example would be a Rasberry Pi, running RoPieee software. This would still need to be connected to a Multi-Channel DAC though.
      All modern AV amplifiers with HDMI inputs are essentially Multi-channel DAC’s with amplification included. You can also buy Multi-Channel DACs with line-level outputs, for connecting to amplification, and then onto speakers, eg. Essence Evolve II, to name one.
      In terms of a true Roon Certified “Endpoint” that connects via Ethernet, and outputs 5.1 analogue. I don’t know of such a device. I may be schooled in this though if someone does know of such a device! 🙂

    • @mw4609
      @mw4609 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Making global PEQ adjustments to compensate for room affects without measuring first isn't a good path to follow. First take measurements of the room's response using calibrated mic (miniDSP Umik1 or 2 or Dayton OmniMic) and REW (free software) to find the room frequency anomalies. After you find the frequencies, widths, amplitudes of those anomalies - then they can be compensated with PEQ filters in Roon. Without measuring first, you're just guessing - and likely getting further away from linear in-room response.
      This can also be accomplished with room-correction software like Dirac, Room Perfect, Audyssey built-in to many pieces of commonly-available audio gear that will come with the required measurement mic.
      Also keep in mind, these room correction filters can be effective, but they are a band-aid. Root-cause of the problem is the room - fix the room first (to the extent possible). Tweaking system output to correct room issues is like wearing earplugs to avoid hearing a squeaking door hinge.

    Thanks for this. I am an Amazon HD user, wish Roon and Amazon could find a way to support it. Amazon isn't great at providing an API. One question, Chris, when you set up your profiles for listening devices (Headphones, Speakers) is it easy to switch those without going thru menus?

    I want to browse, say Tidal's catalogue, before even thinking of giving them my credit card number. Currently I have nothing on any hard disc, and a massive collection of DAB radio .MP2 (yes, .MP2) files Roon can never know exist. Also much vinyl, CDs and even 78s. Lastly, do Roon or other streaming services pay every artist for every track played??? Probably not.

      I'm not sure if you can accomplish what you want with rPi and a HAT alone. You might want to look at the HiFiBerry line of DAC with DSP HATs which is the closest I know of to what your are looking for.

    • @DIYHiFiLife
      @DIYHiFiLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. It's hard for me to remotely debug your setup. You should be able to go into your storage settings in the Roon settings and add your Desktop or other Music locations for Roon to use. One thing that might help is to have your Nucleus hard wired with Ethernet. You might try to hard wire your Desktop as well. You can download a free app such as Advanced IP Scanner that will let you scan your network to make sure everything is visible, etc.

MQA remains controversial but I have heard good sound MQA tracks as I have heard good sounding FLAC, MP3, etc. The problem seems to be is that MQA is a solution without a clear need? I think MQA is trying to be ubiquitous like Dolby but has not caught on. Now that big guns like Apple have embraced Dolby Atmos, MQA may be pushed to the back burner.
