What a cool project. Thanks for the diagram. I want to do this too
the only thing that worries me about using your only alternator is if something goes wrong and it malfunctions while welding out on the trail...you might not be able to drive home on just the battery charge....otherwise this is ingenious!!
Very cool and useful project. Thanks for sharing.
Just came across this video, the information for the most part is excellent. I am slightly confused though. In wiring diagram, you show the 110v plug being the positive source for the brushes and the negative coming from the DPDT switch. As I understand DC electrical circuits this would make the 110v plug a service disconnect, nothing plugged in no electrical flow. I believe that the 110v plug should be connected to the same rectifier terminal as the positive welding lead. Can you please let me know where my understanding is going wrong?
Prove it
Thats cool!!!! I would like to try something like that but with a spool gun and Flux core welding. I hate stick welding bought a tig a couple years ago off amazon a cheapy and dint have gas for it so tested the mma function worked great actually used it for 2 days hadnt used a stick welder since the 80s when i was in hi school lol and then remembered i had a wire feed welder in the truck and grabed it i was building a aframe engine hoist. Took me a day just to get decent with the stick lol the wire feed is a 26 year old century 80 ac welder i bought new i can weld the hell out of it but its a hard welder to use just 2 switches no knobs lol. Would definitely like to try this on my truck i have a couple extra alternaters also from what i understand about the ac motors in tools you need 120 volts of dc to get them to work right haven't tried it my self but your grinder sounded i little underpowered. Good luck and loved the video!!!!!
👍🏻 nice
Pressure you are spraying at??
Awesome!!!!!
Hey I have trouble with being intimidated or worried about doing projects also! So congrats on achieving your goal!!
How long between coats?
At 14:17 mark, you pointed out the blade ports on the 120 volt recepticle. With the round port down, wide port on left is neutral, narrowest on the right is positive. You said the opposite. Not sure if it was intentional or a mistake. Im not an electrical engineer. But this video is freakin amazing!!!! You are one helluva sharp minded individual to design this to work so well in such a small sanitary package in an already over-complicated,cramped area under the hood of a modern day vehicle. Thank you so much for this video. Real good stuff right here man.
So… worst case scenario, kid flips down the switch while you’re driving down the road, open circuit, nothing happens aside from the battery possibly dying?
Im trying this at home.
Does it still work?
I got a dana H.D.70 GM rear diff somebody should get for me very reasonable and it's a limited slip
This is what youtube content is supposed to be. Thanks for sharing man
Awesome video
@Sweeney Off-Road What kind of alternator are you using, I must have missed it in the video...
nice ill be doing that to my truck thank you for sharing this in a some what easy to understand video. ishould be able to replicate your your idea
Excellent video! I look forward to the next project.
Awesome video! Thanks! I might do this. Only thing I’d do differently is a voltage display so you don’t need to hand a multimeter.
Damn , you just have to have that mind set and all is possible. Looks bad ass.
This was invented and streamlined as actual product in carbondale colorado years ago, then guy patented it then sold the patent to the us govt for the humvees when they were adopted to replace the jeep, whenever that was.
I saw one on his pickup back in the early 80,s
Do you think it would work the same way with an airless paint sprayer
What size tip would you recommend on a LVLP gun for your mix ratio?
10:40 you have interesting electrical symbols 🤣😜
on the voltage regulator the I,A,S,F i think they are as I =ignition A= active + S=switch F = fuse for anyone with electrical knowledge that wants to wire this up differently?
Why not put this to use with a small gas or Diesel engine? That cable control for the throttle looks like it came from an aircraft supply shop. We have those on general aviation aircraft for throttle control.
this sounds like a good way to have a breakdown in the middle of nowhere. If you came up with a good way to power a separate alternator to do welding that would be OK IMHO.
I bought a Lidl DC welder for £70. Works well (ex ASME 9).
Fantastic video
You need to quit mumbling, and invest in a proper microphone. Terribly made video
Man I wish I had te mentally compacity to comprehend and understand how to build one of those. I simply got lost. It makes no sense to me.
Thank for amazing video I like to know about fluid u used I m from india and here some fluids are not available or sells here can u tell me alternate of Charcoal Lighter Fluid and What is 30 Weight Oil? Is it engine oil, if Yes what type is it...?
What a great comprehensive presentation. More than one model unit was great.
I'm still watching. More great stuff.
Im using rustoleum matte clear enamel from a spray can. I sprayed it into a mixing cup so I can spray it through my spray gun. Do I need to use acetone and hardener or to thin it down or will it spray through a 1.4 tip on a cheap harbor fright purple gun. Im painting a fender.
Great video! I've been looking into doing this myself, and came across an electronic governor on amazon for around 100 bucks that will keep my rpm stable under load. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this! Should I use this ratio for primer and clear coat as well?
You will need that alternator at hi rpm to have sufficient cooling!
I am 100% going to try this at home!
Didn`t hear now change in rpm when you struck that arc.. i would imagen that would be a thing that you hear if you think of the load you give the alternator. I mean on some old engines/cars you could hear change in rpm even when you turned on and off the lights, and that`s nothing compaired to and weld arc. But im a mornon who has no clue . nice video tho
I am impressed but still confused you’re way above my pay grade. Is there any way I could a copy of the wiring diagram?
So is this the same alternator that the engine runs off or an auxiliary? If thats the only alternator wouldnt you be worried about the power running out and the engine quitting while welding and not charging?
looks like very close to 2:1, or 2.5:1
Great video! I can see where you're going with the potentiometer. I'd add a voltmeter in addition with the potentiometer so you can see how much voltage you're supplying the positive brush during the welding circuit operation. It'll create "weld settings" instead of full power to the rod. Good stuff!
When I weld on a car, I always remove both battery leads. But in your case a simple way to overcome the issue the pinned post pointed out is this: Figure out a way to mount another alternator on your jeep. Also, mount another battery and use both of those exclusively for your welder and make-shift 110v plug. Leaving the "normal" alternator charging system including battery intact and unmolested. That instantly solves the issue of crazy voltage spikes running thru the Jeeps system. Consider shooting an update video if you're still using this "Welder system." Or?? Good Video!
Opening a circuit deactivates it btw
