In these videos i try to share with you my passion for wood turning
I started wood turning in 2016 when my wife bought me a lathe for my 60th birthday, I call this a hobby but my wife calls this an obsession. Any day I get to spend in my workshop is a great day for me

Blue burnt Sycamore. A fun project using several differing technique's
This was a project using the off cut from last weeks video
I try to use this woodturning channel as a platform to share ideas, and to demonstrate to other wood workers the steps needed to achieve this.
I use many different types of wood in varying combinations, as well as combining this with resins, i tend to use glass cast 50 as i can use this without the need of a pressure pot.
For my finishes I use things like Wood dyes spirit based and water based, high gloss wax and Boiled Linseed Oil - Danish oil and hard wax oil. I also like to experiment with differing textures to give my bowls a different feel to them
For my actual wood turning i use a galaxy DVR lathe 14 44 which is very versatile, which gives me the ability to turn a 14-inch bowl or spindle length of 44-inchs

Iron red wood a one off piece of wood #119
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
This piece of wood was given to me by a friend who was working on the shore defences on the south coast, i think it is a piece of Iron red wood as this is resistant to damp and is predominantly used in these situations, it is extremely hard and very difficult to turn as one of its properties is that it is an abrasive wood and dulls tools very quickly I try to use this woodturning channel as a p...

Oak Urn with Resin Lid #117
มุมมอง 332ปีที่แล้ว
This is an Urn turned from a piece of Oak with a resin and Yew lid, because i was so far out of the chuck i had to use a three wheel steady to support it, even then it was a very laborious task having to be extremally delicate. I pyrographed a wood pecker on the side, but forgot to record myself doing it. Im not sure if i like it, let me know what you think in the comments box I try to use this...

I have had this piece of Hazel in my wood store for several years, and decided it was about time i did something with it.I started by turning it and hollowing it and because the wood was quite bland i then decided to texture it and colour it, giving it what i thought was quite a pleasing finish, i hope you agree. Well Done, Steve, I really like that; more ideas to try! Thank you for sharing.
thats nice ,,, how thin can you get the wood ,,, asking for a friend
How thin does your friend want it, and what would the project be
where did you get the blank from that size?
A neighbour of mine had a big old Ash tree come down in his garden and he let me cut it up and bring it home, i have several pieces this size
A beautiful piece of art indeed.
Thanks
Nicely done. It is indeed a piece of art, but it is also a functional bit of work. Bird seed in a dispenser is a bird feeder. Your object is a "people feeder." Put M &M candy in it. Of course it must be turned over and shaken lightly to dispense any into the hungry person's hand. Yes, a people feeder.
Good use for it im loving the imagination
Great techniques ….. beautiful piece Steve 🤠🇨🇱
glad you enjoyed it Randy
Nice little piece Steve!
Thanks i enjoyed this one
Very nice! Love the blue!
Thanks
Lazor burners have nothing on you Steve. Because I know how you did it. I think this is one of the prettiest pieces I have seen. Thank you so much for sharing. I will look for you on the next one. Be good
Wow, thank you!
A piece of art indeed my friend 😊
Thanks Jojo
Nice to see you back Steve. That was a very enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing. See you on the next one
Thanks Albert
Lovely job, just makes my brain hurt a bit! Can I ask what pyrography machine you use?
I'm sorry but i don't know there is nothing on the box or the machine, but i will say that the first one i bought only had one pen and i was forever changing the tips this one has two pens and you select them by just pushing a switch, so much easier
nice job. thankyou for showing us how it's done.
An absolute pleasure Diana. Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome job! I love it!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful weave pattern Steve and a neat idea. Great to see you back on the lathe.😊
Feels good to be back Jojo i didn't realise how much i missed it
Great effect Steve!
Thanks Dave
I need to get out more and get to know local tree surgeons, firewood producers etc. as sources of turning wood. Basket weave always looks so simple until you try it.
As soon as i hear a chain saw im there, the worst that can happen is they so NO, I intend to be back at the club next meeting will you be there
@@thehampshirewoodturner Yes. I've had a bad couple of months but I'm feeling better now.
As always, great video.
Thanks for the comment glad you liked it
Great to see you back in action again! 😃
Thanks Anders, feels good to be back
I absolutely love this Steve, it looks awesome 👍 I hope you are keeping well Tom
Thanks Tom, I wouldnt say well as such but i am trying to keep busy, I am rejoining the club, so will be attending next month, hopes all well with you and your family
Lovely! Great to see you back on the lathe and looking forward to more videos (no pressure though!)
Thanks Keith, glad you liked it, I am enjoying being back in the workshop!!!
Brilliant Steve! 😃
Thanks Val i was pleased with this one,
Love your animals Steve 🤠. What chuck are you using? The reason I ask, I will use that to determine measurements for body and head. Unless you have some measurements for the blank/body etc. Thanks for sharing 🤠🇨🇱
The dimensions are as follows starting at the bottom and working up, Feet 55mm long 18mm wide, Body 100mm high 70 mm wide, head 60mm long 45mm at widest point, ears 25mm long 15mm wide, arms 45mm long 15 mm wide. The other thing i would say is make sure when you do the tail that it either curls up over his head or when it comes out the back of the body it is touching the ground as mine is all back heavy and wont stand up so this is something i need to remake. Have fun and do let me know how you get on
@@thehampshirewoodturner Thank you so much 🤠🇨🇱
@@randyrockwell6136 Your more than welcome
I heard for a Sharpie to be really permanent, you need a one with a metal barrel. Also, CA glue doesn’t last long...you’re probably better off with 5 minute epoxy.
Thanks Morgan, you are of course right, I have some in the workshop, dont know why i didnt use it, but i will in future
@@thehampshirewoodturner 🙂...By the way, glad you’re back.
Would you please give a few dimensions? It is so cute!

Love it👍👍😘😘👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!, really good fun to turn
Love it! Great idea!
Glad you like it!
Really nice Steve! As you say, the animals can take ages with all the small parts and assembly time
Thanks Dave, but they are fun, just something different to turn
Very clever. Bry
Thanks Bry, When my wife first suggested that i might like a lathe i was very sceptical, because after all, all a lathe can do is turn wood round, but when you get into it you realise there are an awful lot of variations on round
Great to see you back again 🥰 you have been missed! Hope to see more of you soon again! 😃
Im working on something at the mo should be posted tomorrow
I'm glad you're back. Your absence is very understandable. Ash is a perfect wood for rejuvenation and beginnings.
Thank you for those kind words Ben, The support from other people is very touching
Não ficou bom não!
Nice piece of wood! I love hazel - usually for sticks though You made it look like it’s got good layers of character in it, well patinated and painted! That would sell for a fortune in London!
Many thanks, Im not sure if i like it or not, although it is still sat by the side of my fireplace rather that being relegated to the spare bedroom soi guess i must like it a bit !!!
From one wood sander to another, it's great to see you back! Beautiful ash bowl!
Thanks Mike, it has been a tough last 12 months but i feel like I've turned a corner now
@@thehampshirewoodturner good to hear Steve, if there is anything I can ever do please let me know.
Good to see you back Steve. You obviously haven't lost your touch.

Amazing tribute.
