Yakisugi. Burnt Ash bowl wood turning

- This was another of my off the shelf half finished projects, using the Japanese process Yakisugi of charring wood to preserve it
I try to use this woodturning channel as a platform to share ideas, and to demonstrate to other wood workers the steps needed to achieve this.
I use many different types of wood in varying combinations, as well as combining this with resins, i tend to use glass cast 50 as i can use this without the need of a pressure pot.
For my finishes I use things like Wood dyes spirit based and water based, high gloss wax and
Boiled Linseed Oil - Danish oil and hard wax oil. I also like to experiment with differing textures to give my bowls a different feel to them
For my actual wood turning i use a galaxy DVR lathe 14 44 which is very versatile, which gives me the ability to turn a 14-inch bowl or spindle length of 44-inchs
Thank you very much for watching my channel and please feel free to leave comments below.
Big like!👍👍👍👍👍✅💪Felicitări! Great video 👍👍👍😎
Thanks Gabi, glad you liked it. First comment up very quick off the blocks
I don't usually enjoy the burning process, the smell sticks to everything, but I do like the end result, great work Steve!
Thanks Chris, you are right of course, even though i had the fan on and the door open it still smells in my workshop
Love it Steve, great end result and good idea to use as an outdoor ornament, thanks 👍
Thanks Mike, i was going to use it to put a spare key in but i think a key safe may be a much better idea
@@thehampshirewoodturner yep, don't hide a key in something nice that may get pinched lol
Sorry, but I just don't get it. Looks like a burnt bowling ball to me. Just my preference on the look, not at all a comment on your skills.
Hi Krethjr, I admire your honesty and your input, It was only ever meant as an ornament and i was looking for that beautiful bluey satin black colour which you get from burning. Saying that it was a bit of an experiment and not one i think i will be repeating, i do prefer the look of natural grained wood, Thanks for watching and leaving your comment
That turned out really nice! I was not sure about it when you started, but I knew you had it all figured out 🇨🇱🤠
Thanks Randy, it was funny that when I showed this to my wife she said how much she liked the colour on it and wished I had left it as it was
Sorry it was better before you turned it to ash.
Thats funny you say that Ron because that was exactly what my wife said.
Every week something different - look forward to seeing it in the garden! 😀
The grand daughter has taken it already
Nice job, like the burnt wood better
Hi Vern this project has certainly divided the public
great job mate
Thanks Mark
