  • This piece of wood was given to me by a friend who was working on the shore defences on the south coast, i think it is a piece of Iron red wood as this is resistant to damp and is predominantly used in these situations, it is extremely hard and very difficult to turn as one of its properties is that it is an abrasive wood and dulls tools very quickly
I try to use this woodturning channel as a platform to share ideas, and to demonstrate to other wood workers the steps needed to achieve this.
I use many different types of wood in varying combinations, as well as combining this with resins, i tend to use glass cast 50 as i can use this without the need of a pressure pot.
For my finishes I use things like Wood dyes spirit based and water based, high gloss wax and Boiled Linseed Oil - Danish oil and hard wax oil. I also like to experiment with differing textures to give my bowls a different feel to them
For my actual wood turning i use a galaxy DVR lathe 14 44 which is very versatile, which gives me the ability to turn a 14-inch bowl or spindle length of 44-inchs
Thank you very much for watching my channel and please feel free to leave comments below.

Not surprised it was so hard after being pickled in salt water for 40 years. Beautiful result.

What a stunning bowl. Bloody hard work but I think the result is definitely worth it. Glad you didn't try to go thinner and loose it

Beautiful work Steve with what has to be one of the hardest woods to turn, I have two large slabs left that I just intend to use as weights lol. All the best and talk soon.
