Lady in Red Lacecap Hydrangea in Watercolor
In this time lapse video with real time narration and captions, Doris Ettlinger uses pure pigment and strong contrasts to turn an already lovely lacecap hydrangea into a dramatic watercolor painting. Her techniques include pressure strokes to create hard and soft edges, dropping strong color into wet washes, negative painting, spattering, and glazing. Originally recorded for the Musconetcong Watercolor Group of northwestern New Jersey.
Pigments: Permanent Rose, Hansa Yellow Light, Cobalt, Sap Green, Cerulean, Ultramarine. And probably Black for the bee.
Brushes: Silver Black Velvet (various sizes), DaVinci sable no.12, Loew Cornell Ultra Round no. 10, rigger brush.
Paper: Fabriano 140 lb. cold press

A good question! I could say that I wanted more color contrast with the eggs and the leaves in the background. I could also say that value is always more important than getting the hue right. But I suppose the real answer is that I love Mineral Violet, Quinacridone Gold and Light Red. Thanks for asking!
