I think one of the reasons a lot of the male characters don't sell well is due to a lot of these gacha games being more towards male player bases. Something I've noticed is that a lot of male player bases within the gacha games space doesn't like male characters, mainly in Asia. With games like Love in Deep Space, it's clear that male characters are still loved and there is a demand for them. But theres just so many times where in player bases like Genshin and other games where male players in Asia don't like male characters. There was a trend of people hurting cats in china because of Wanderer having a large female player base. I could on but yeah. It's safer to market towards them without risks being involved.

Once i saw that zzz isn't going to deliver some male characters... I quit zzz, even though i loved the concept of a persona styled fighting game. Even though i love the female designs... The fact that they baited me, thinking it's going to be a fair split is pushing ne away from playing.

i think the ''man problem'' in games happens in lots of genres, i just finished cyber punk and the differnece between the female companions/ romances and male was VAST. females get cool stories, deep writing and the men romancables are so much shallower and added as an after thought. i think with the rise of more female gamers ( or atleast the companies recognising we exist and spend money too) means more thought put into the boys and thier stories :) I want to see more overally sexualised, unrealistic ,naked ripped men with male jiggle pyhsics XD

I think there are some facts the video misses as to why developers don't make a lot of males or don't care. Genshin is the game you should look at because it actively targetted female players. Starting from 3.3 to all the way to 4.1, there was not a single limited female character added. They added 6 limited male characters in a row. Know what happened? Revenue completely tanks and the developers have been struggling to get people back. In fact, the 5.0 livestream was all about how they were fixing the problem, and that region only has one limited male so far. And Genshin didn't neglect its male characters. Sumeru made male characters as important as the female characters, and for Fontaine, Neuvillette basically took all the screen time from the actual archon of the region (the game's story quest are called "Archon Quest" by the way). Even after all the pandering, none of the male banners did as well as the female ones. Despite the storeying being all about him, Furina did better than Neuvillette. If you want to know why HSR and ZZZ are scared to make male characters, its because they don't want to implode like Genshin did. There is another critical point you miss. Why was it OK to have more male characters in the past? Why do people only care about Waifus now. These companies saw who people were rolling for, and turns out, it was more often for the girls. So these companies turned into that and focused more on their female characters to improve profits. Even the conversation around Love and Deepspace is misleading. Look at the Sensor Tower again. Notice how every other title has a greater focus on female characters? What it means is the market for girls is greater than it is for men. Love and Deepspace is successful because its the only game doing it. But if everyone else tried it, it wouldn't work because the potential market size is too small. At the end of the day, the truth is girls are more popular and profitable and these companies follow the money.

this is why i spend so much money on aventurine banner, legit pour 400 dollars just to get him to e6 and i have so far bought every single merch they come out (yes include perfume, plushies, and figures) i know a lot of my friends also spend a heavy amount to him as well. Thing is, we have to SHOW that male are liked and favorable... only way to do that is to spend. But that also require a lot of people efforts to help out. Maybe then mhy or others will see the light and see that when they create an amazing character (like aventurine) they WILL get results.

The only gacha game I even remotely keep up with, despite not playing at all, is "Disgaea RPG". And yeah, it also has the same issue. If you look at any update that introduces new units to pull for (mostly character variants), it's always dominated by mostly female characters, if not entirely so. Not to say the male side doesn't get anything, there are actually some really good ones. Heck, one of the characters that has the most variants in it is a male character...who funnily has a canonical genderbent form that also has a ton of variants of its own. But that's kind of the thing, "Disgaea RPG" is based on an existing franchise, "Disgaea". An IP which has 7 (technically 8) mainline entries and multiple spin-offs, much less a number of tangentially related games. Those male characters were already popular with fan demand behind them. And even with this, there's a notable disparity.

Literally, there was a whole boycott and association of Genshin and Radical Feminism JUST because Genshin didn't released female characters for while in KR. Asia in general just seems to hate men in male target gacha game. I am really not sure, I sometimes feel like the logic is "Why make male character when you can make female character with exactly same style and concept".

A well written story is also a part of it. Oberon from FGO is well loved and popular cause he is one of the best written characters and it aslo helps that he's a busted support

As much as a love PGR and ZZZ, I wish they would release more men. PGR has proven multiple times that they CAN write men, and make their designs interesting, however, every 6 months they release another male character while women are constantly released. As for ZZZ, they can clearly design men interesting too, but don’t do it the same for women. The men are more experimental while all the women are designed to be “cute” or “sexy”. It gets even worse when you try to criticize those points and people tell them “go play otome games!” When they just aren’t interested in that genre and they prefer combat games, and just want the devs to listen to them for once. (This isn’t a breakdown of the story since I finished this chapter in December when it released, and now my memory is hazy about it) In PGR, my favorite stories are Spiral of Chronos and Cradle Parade, Spiral of Chronos focusing on a male character; I consider this chapter to be one of the best written as not only do I find it heartbreaking, but it constantly kept me on my feet. Lee, the main character of this chapter, is quite already well written, and he goes through way more character development. This frame (Hyperreal) having differing personalities compared to Entropy and Palefire. While in those frames he was grumpy and unapproachable, in this one, he’s a lot softer and communicates with his feelings way more. Pgr clearly proves that they can write stories featuring its men, but just chooses not to since a majority of the cast is women, and women is what they almost always release.

I'm gonna need to defend some of my Arknights men here. Silverash HAS to wear a suit bc he's a literal CEO Executor is some sort of law enforcer, and so was OG Ch'en. Mlynar is also a former office worker despite being a knight XD Suuure Phantom should get more non-suit outfits being the resident theatre kid, but he's also kind of an assassin so just think of Hitman lol. As for the rest so far none really wear a SUIT suit ig, Arknights is known for the tacticool streetwear for both guys and girls after all, with some exceptions. My favorite outfits for males are from the ABC Gang bc they're streetwear + handyman suit kind of fit, which suits their lore (especially Chiave). Not to mention--WE HAVE MEN WITH BEARDS/STUBBLE/STACHE DANGIT. That's a plus imo XD

I think there are various reasons for this: first and foremost, I think HSR was always aimed mainly at the Male audience, just like its sister game, Honkai Impact 3rd, so of course its main attractor point is its female character. But if you look at another MiHoYo game: "Tear of Themis', you wouldn't find any playable female characters there, because that game mainly aimed at Female audience. Second, (this is just my opinion and over-generalization) I think it is ultimately because of how human males and females work, males are simple creatures that are easily stimulated by visuals, that's why women wear dresses, and that's why female characters design are very bold, but if you look at them they usually don't have much personality variation with the most popular are cutesy girlfriend typearch. While female, on the other hand, are creature that seeks intimacy, and connection, that's why the male characters marketed toward women usually use heir personality as the main charm point, instead of the suit they wear.

While I'm generally more interested in female characters than male, not all female characters have been to my interested. Some of them I even nearly regret pulling for in retrospect because I never use them. Males seem to both be almost an afterthought in being made interesting by devs and mostly there for the game to not land in the 'harem' category, though many games, gachas or not, aren't shy about being labeled as that.

So what you're trying to say is devs wont give male characters important roles in the story and meta gameplay because they're unpopular. And the players won't roll for male characters and thus make them more pupular because devs wont give important roles in the story and meta gameplay to them.

I think the reason why people dont like the fanservice of zzz is because most of the eye candy is given to the female characters although the male characters are sexualised it's usually very tame compared to the female characters. Which could of alienated it's husbando audience. Another reason unlike nikke and blue archive upon it's release zzz was marketed as waifu and husbando game but as we can see now there are far more female characters then men, which inreturn furastrated a proportion of it's audience who felt like they were baited into investing into a smutty waifu game, considering sexy husbando games are very rare. The sexual frustration of these gamers probably added more fuel to the fire. I think thats why theres a vocal backlash towards the zzz fanserivce compared to the gacha games mention before. That isn't to say that those game don't get a large amount of criticism but I as said before zzz backlash is more apparent. Also Yeah, I denfintly agree that these discussion can be extremely toxic and mind draining both sides have good points while also being extremely hostile to one another.

Just play Wuthering Waves where 90% of the male characters are super hot, and 100% are strong and viable to play. Sure let's not talk about a certain man named Calcharo... But there are plenty of big quests around male characters in that game.

I agree with fanservice being annoying or down right inappropriate but in the Ceasar trailer it was like a bonus in the ebd as it came after the fighting, if instead it was during the fighting then yeah, me no like. That's just me on fanservice tho.

Destiny Child (RIP the english version of that, it was incredibly F2P friendly with a great soundtrack, artwork, and pretty neat little character sidestory feature for what it was) only had a few male character cards but i loved the way all of them looked. it had a fan service feature that would give you buffs if you left your favorite cards in a hot springs and the male character cards werent exempt from this. i played that game every day for 1 whole year before i quit it and the issue was that none of the powerful cards in the game were male characters, they were all mid level power cards that you would never use on anything that wasnt a beginner or starter team. because the game was generous with giving away free gacha pulls and guaranteed high rank pulls system if you rolled too many times without a good card appearing, you soon wouldnt use them. you literally would only keep them to collect them. it made me question, what was the point of even adding them in the first place? it's not like i ever met another female player who played DC, the male cards in that game were clearly designed to appeal to women but it never had any fandom around it because all the other fujos were busy being obsessed with genshin etc. and of course all high power cards were waifus, there was no equal power male character equvalent so such fandom couldnt be cultivated. why did they have ANY male character cards in the game to begin with? even went so far as to make "bathing" fan service graphics and backstory quests for them but not have them have any utility or purpose? it just seems weird. There's a couple things that people need to come to terms with, most gamers are men and most men are straight, the 50/50 split between men and women does not translate directly from the real world into gaming. Therefore most gamers will always enjoy female characters over males unless they are inspirational or aspirational to them at a personal level. This doesn't automatically make them gooners as much as it makes them just normal men. The industry is indeed being run by the loud minority but it's not fair to say male players are gooners for preferring one gender over the other.

The male image has been stagnant to the extreme. Patriarchy, suits, bodybuilders, mafia bosses, dads, salary men; most of them stoic. The image of what defines a 'man' is exceptionally narrow and boring. Women, on the other hand, are allowed a far broader range of emotional and aesthetic expression. Especially in media. Just look at Oscar award ceremonies and how many variations there are on dresses vs the the men's suits. Add to that the increasing gender divide, particularly in S-Korea, but also increasingly in 'the West', where a surprising amount of women all but denounce the existence of men, and the focus on female characters gets reinforced. Men just aren't _interesting._ While I'm biologically male, I find far more options to _express_ myself in games through female characters (favouring the tomboy aesthetic, personally, as well as a graceful look). And while it's easy to say that 'men fawn over women', if I take half a look at the female Vtuber community, a lot of them are surprisingly open about their own spicy preferences. A 'husbando'-focused game could probably sell really well, if given the same attention as the 'waifu' ones. But when it comes to expression and dress-up, I wouldn't be surprised if female gamers preferred female characters, if only for the far broader selection of aesthetic themes.

Wriothesley is definitely a candy. And the stats proove it. Fewer people have him but amongst them a lot more have pull up to his C6 compared to other characters

I think ZZZ fanserivce is fine. Theres alot worse than ZZZ. I saw on twitter people were threatening the quit the game just form Janes tailier alone. This is how you really see the touritst when they carry on like this.

I think the problem is using the girl's body (or femme fetale) to earn money and attention equates to women need to objectify themselves in order to survive. Some guys will say, it's okay for girls to pick prostitution and adult films if they consent and are legal. In current era, girls are educated and smart. For women, to see them in that kind of situation is sort of 'regressive' and it's not something to be proud of. No lady wants to portray that dark side about their female community, if they have strong dignity. But ZZZ in the end is just fiction. If people are upset about some parts of the concept, there are many other games to jump to.

So long as Hoyo conforms to Chinese Communist censorship policies, they'll never release a Gooner game, as it's literally impossible. In order to make an actual Gooner game, they'd have to go the Snowbreak route and make a Global version which isn't censored by Pooh... where all the females canonically have sex with the self-insert protagonist.
