Lure fishing from a boat - my complete guide
On this one I’m showing the whole process of lure fishing. On the land based bit I mistakenly call the Rapala knot a Palomar - sorry about that slip of the tongue!

I said I would add a link to a video showing how I deal with mackerel but I can’t add it here. I’ll put it in the comments and pin it to the top.

Informative video - thank you. How long does it take to get from Kingsbridge to the mouth of the estuary? And do you ever fish in the estuary?
Thank you. It’s 30-40 minutes from Kingsbridge to The Bar, depending on the tide. The estuary can be very productive but I rarely fish it as I prefer to be out at sea and not dealing with weed on the line. 👍
Hi what brand and size booms do you use or does it not really matter
Hi, I use Cox and Rawle uptide booms as I find them much stronger than the hockey stick shaped booms. These always straighten with a decent fish on them. I use ones that are about 5 inches long but only because that size fits well in my lure box!
@@fishingsalcombe thanks for that much appreciated currently watching the back catalogue of posts from your channel you seem to have very chilled out attitude towards fishing have watched all of mr lockers and manic fishing and I am enjoying yours equally many thanks
Appreciate the feedback, thanks Kevin👍
Thanks for sharing. Some excellent tips, and all very well explained. A nice mixed bag for the table as well 👍
Cheers Gareth 👍
Your Palomar knot looks like a Rapala knot
Yes, that was my ‘sausages’ moment! I put in the description that I’d made that gaff but you’re right, Rapala knot for the lures, Palomar on the swivels 👍🎣
Very enjoyable session and I'm now very interested in trying lure fishing for the first time. Very informative thank you
Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it and good luck if you give it a go 🎣👍
Another great video, Rob. Plenty of squid about and the John Dory is an amazing bonus! I have a combined 6oz / 8oz ball lead mold if you ever wanted to make your own ones. Not far from you.😊
That’s very kind thanks Martyn, I’ll bear that in mind when it’s time for winter jobs! 👍
@@fishingsalcombe no problem. You'd be very welcome.
What booms do you use
I always use Cox and Rawle uptide booms (Ashby’s!)
just seen you mention them later rob , thanks
Cracking tutorial on the set up and vid thanks 😊 👍
Cheers Paul, happy that you enjoyed it! 👍
Great video. The loop over the lure is hopefully going to save me a lot of tangles!
Thanks Martin, hope it works for you!👍🎣
what booms do you use attached to the weight when you are lure fishing ?
Hi Blair, I use Cox and Rawle uptide booms. I find these much more robust than the hockey stick type booms which always deform when you have a decent fish on 🎣👍
Very interesting thank and like you said its about being out there
Definitely 👍
Was a cracking video as learnt so much so many thanks!
Thanks mate👍
Great videos, love the simple clean edit and style, no silly music etc... tight lines👍
Thanks for the feedback, glad you’re enjoying the videos!👍
Great tutorial and a very nice days angling. Bet that JD was delicious 😋 <><
Cheers John, yes, fantastic eating fish 👍
What a great video mate really well explained and some cracking fish on the lures too well done
Cheers bud, it was a decent day for slack water! 🎣👍
Good video, many thanks for sharing
Thanks Bob!👍
Nice instructional video rob. I use the palomar not quite a bit easy and strong. Well done catching the John Dory hope it made a tasty meal😊😊
Thanks Dave, got some nice fillets off the JD!👍
Great video. Super to see how you tie your knots and a good idea to scale up for the demos. Thx for sharing. 🎣
Cheers Carl 👍
I just wrote a huge comment and it disapeared. I will just have coffee and try again 😢
Oh no! Look forward to hearing from you Stipo!
I’ve found it! You replied to another comment!
As usual not the smartest out here😂
Great Video i learnt alot about tying different knots , Love the look of the squids and a lovely John Dory
Cheers bud, yes, very pleased with the John Dory👍
Great information and great viewing 👍
Thanks David👍
We do not really use the sliding ledger setup here in Denmark when we fish for cod. I mainly use weighted (40gr-600gr) soft lures. Those I tie on using clips. Simply because I switch lures 10-20 times per day. I have connected the fluorocarbon line directly to the braided line (with an albright knot). So, not to "use too much of the fluorocarbon line, I have a 50lb clip. Works like a charm in that setup.
Also, as a side note - I use about 2-3 ft of fluorocarbon. The fish seems not to care about the braided line. Some people completely skip the fluorocarbon and tie the lure directly to the braided line.
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll look into use a clip, it would certainly make life easier if it doesn’t put the fish off 🎣👍
Thank you for sharing your knowledge it's much more appreciated
Thanks Stuart👍
Nice informative video, what weight rattlebacks are you using?
Not sure about that and I’ve thrown the box away. I use the 4 inch version and they only come in one weight from the shop I use 👍
@fishingsalcombe thanks, I'll take a look, new to that style of fishing but want to get out into deeper water next year and give it a go. I'm planning a trip to salcombe next year as I seen they have a nice slipway and parking available
Yes, it’s a good slip at Salcombe and useable at pretty much all stages of the tide.
as usual great video and informative, no secrets lol. nice to see.
Thanks bud 👍
Another great video, thanks.
Cheers Mark👍
I thought I recognised the creek you were travelling down at the start of the video from when the family stayed down near Salcombe (maybe 40 years ago). You don't travel up from Frogmore way do you by chance? Love the vids btw.
Thank you! I pass the end of Frogmore Creek but my boat is moored at Kingsbridge. I often visit Frogmore Creek in the summer, some of my favourite picnic spots are in that direction 👍
As usual a most entertaining video, with a bunch of tips and tricks. I have stolen your idea how to seperate your lines, so thanks for that simple but splendid idea 👍 Had a laugh when you got 2 rods catching fish at the same time, indeed an exiting moment. John Dory.....what a super catch. I only had 1 JD years ago fishing in Ireland and as you said it tasted wunderfull. Only thing that surprises me every time i watch video's from the UK (so not just yours) is how heavy your rods are. I have fished many times in Denmark and 3 times in Norway in the Tromso area, that is several hundreds of miles above the arctic circle and we all fish with heavy bassrods. I prefer the seabass special 75 - 125 grams. That rod is strong enough for the fjords we have fished. If you are "unlucky" to catch a halibut over 50 kg than this rod is outgunned. But still my heaviest cod was 19 kg and my hevigst halibut was just over 22 kg. It is just a matter of taking time to land the fish or saving goooodbey. Ofcourse i have pictures and video's of all my catches overthere. When going fishing on the wrecks from Dutch harbours, noby uses anything else than a bassrod. So thats how some idiote like and my friends fish. And again i hope you come around with another video soon. Like your video's very mutch. Thanks and greetz from Stipo from Holland
Thanks Stipo! The trend here is definitely going towards lighter rods but when I think back to rods we used to use when I first started fishing, a 12-20lb class rod would have been ultra light then! The slimness of the rods we use today (thanks to carbon construction) would only have been used by fresh water fishermen! Tight lines my friend 🎣👍
Great video 👌🏻, what engine would you recommend for a 165 Warrior? Looking for a four stroke.
I have no experience of the 165 sorry. My preference for engine brands would be Yamaha or Suzuki. I have a friend with an Explorer Elite, which is very similar to the 165 I would say. He has a 70 Suzuki four stroke on that which goes very nicely 👍
What is it about an easterly wind that puts the fish off biting our lures and baits. 😢
I’ve heard many explanations (excuses!). Possibly the best one is that east winds are generally cold and generally come with a high pressure system, this ‘shocks’ the phyto and zoo plankton and this rattles right through the ecosystem to put the whole food chain off feeding. Not sure if that stands up to scientific scrutiny but something puts the fish off!!
7:40 what size is the coolbox. I was going to buy the larger one for the back but I like your idea better now. Great vid and thank you
Mine is the 25 QT BMX. I have a piece of plastic that sits in the fuel hatch gutter to prevent it sliding back. The size works well for me for cool storage and a seat 👍
@@fishingsalcombe I agree it does work better. Thank you
Cant get over how clean your boat is 👏 the fact you say its a bit grubby is hilarious. Fair play mate
Fair enough mate, I do like my fishing boat, as long as it doesn’t smell like one! 👍
Lovely video with loads of info
Cheers mate 👍
you don't have to worry about fuel in an auxillary outboard if you use ASPEN fuel. normal fuel goes off after a few months whereas aspen lasts for years. So you wont have to clean carbs out.
Thanks, I’ll have a look at that 👍
I use that stuff for the garden equipment, saves an awful lot of time and can leave it without causing issues. Bit pricey but never thought of using it for the Aux till now
Great video thank you
Cheers mate 👍
Great video Rob and happy Winter fishing love your videos keep up the good work
Thanks Jimmy👍
In the market you answered so many questions video was well timed 😂 thanks
Thank you and good luck finding a boat!👍
@@fishingsalcombejust a quick question what size is your penn?
@supermotoxcw7695 I have a 15 and a 30. The 15 is my favourite size and it’s the two speed lever drag.
I've just got mine a few months ago, first time owner. Once you're prepared to do a small bit of work then you'll be happy out
@@fishingsalcombe thanks
Excellent informative video rob. Isn’t there a way to put the batteries under the seating on the port side to help the balance. Perhaps longer leads it’s not that far. I like the look of the 175 just can’t afford one right now lol 😊
Thanks Dave, yes, that would help but the cable route isn’t easy and that locker isn’t ventilated. Easier at the design stage, which would have helped but not an easy retrofit 👍
Interesting and informative, thank you for sharing. 😀

Great informative video watch all your videos very good to watch keep up the fantastic work all the best dave
Thanks Dave, appreciate the comments 👍
Great to hear from you the how and why of your boot. For me (not having a boat) was a eye-opener in some subjects. And makes me more jealous towards boat owners 😉😉😉. Greetz from Stipo
Thank you Stipo, boat prices seem to be finally coming down after the Covid boom. Maybe time to get one? 👍🎣🛥️
Great video, very honest & informative, thanks .
Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed the watch 👍
This is like free safety training. Ever boater should watch this video. My second lesson for today... the first was your weather explanation. Thanks for a truly brilliant lesson on personal safety at sea. New subsciber safely on board. 👍
Thank you, it’s just an explanation of my thoughts and it’s definitely a bigger subject than just wear or don’t wear. Cheers for subscribing 👍
I love all this techy/geeky shit... so much so I'm gonna watch it again. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, because I have learned something today. Next time we are out on the boat I'm gona explain the weather fronts to the wife ... it might be our last trip together 😂
Glad you enjoyed watching, good look explaining coriolis over dinner 🤣👍
You never hold any member of the shark family by the tail. They have no rib cage, it is just cartalage. And if you hold them by the tail all the internal organs fall to the mouth part of the fish and eventually they could die. So be very careful how you handle them. But otherwise not a bad video
That’s a fair point, however, the poor thing was riddled with parasites. It also wasn’t too heavy and not in pup. I’ve had them on the deck before and they’re difficult to handle with one hand without getting spiked by one of those spurs so on balance, for my safety and the welfare of the spurdog, I handled it that way to clear it of most of its parasites. Thanks for watching 👍
That mackerel cloud formation behind you in the first half of the video looked spectacular. 😮 <><
Yes, it was very pronounced in the sky! 👍
nice vids matey🤘👌
Thanks Ian👍🎣
Gurnard ooh yeah delicious , good to see you back buddy
Love gurnard, loads about, just not quite big enough to take 👍
Great to see you back out again and posting, been checking in once a week hoping you posted. Also a good amount of species caught 👍👍
Thanks Paul, hopefully not such a big gap before the next one!👍
