Exploring Alternative Career Paths For Architects
Architects are in a way the Swiss knives of the built environment! 😅
We can get so wrapped up in this identity and forget to ask ourselves if we really like it or if we could add value in different ways.
However, our training allows us to develop a great set of skills that are transferrable to many other professions.
In this video, I give some examples of alternatives careers for Architects split by categories.

Dear, Sara! In addition to these raised themes, could you be able to give me your opinion on my special case? For instance, I'm an overseas architect from Russia with 6 years of experience in architecture and interior design, holding a bachelor degree (5 years) and a private master degree, "Diploma in Strategic Interior Design/IIE School of Architecture & Design, Madrid, Spain (10 months). In my case, what job titles can I apply for at the moment? Is it only Part 1 of Arch. Assistant? If so, is it possible for me to find a job in the UK remotely and then, after getting a job offer, start making a work-type visa and finally arrive in the UK? Or does it sound impossible from your point of view? Maybe you have some friends who have experienced the same issues. Thank you in advance, and good luck with your channel!

Hi thanks for your comment. It is getting more and more difficult to secure visa sponsorship from companies especially if you’re living abroad at the moment. In my experience, many people would come to the UK to study and additional post-graduate degree and then try to find a job after they graduate. The job would depend on the specialised degree. I hope this helps!

Hiya! Yes, that’s right! It is possible to work in the UK even without a UK qualification. For example, you can work in an Architecture office if you have qualified as an Architect abroad. You wouldn’t have the right to use the title so your job title will be different, but you can still get the job if the company likes your cv and portfolio. There are other layers of complexity to this including the right to work in the UK and visa sponsorships which are not easy to obtain. I hope this clarifies things.

    • @SaraSaadouni_TAC
      @SaraSaadouni_TAC 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

You’re welcome! That’s a tricky one as the ARB prescribed exam is an evidence based assessment. The evidence doesn’t necessarily have to be from the BArch (although preferable) but it could also be competition submissions, own work, professional work etc. Additional material needs to be produced from scratch anyway to meet all criteria. I would send an email directly to the ARB to clarify! I hope this helps.

Hi Sara, I wanted to express my gratitude for the valuable information you provided regarding the Architect's guide to registration in the UK. In my background, I completed a five-year Bachelor's degree in my home country, followed by nine years of work experience. Afterward, I moved to the UK and pursued my Master's degree here. Last year, I attempted to secure employment and also applied for the Part 3 course. I've received an offer from a university in London. I'm curious about your experience regarding the need for prior work experience to pursue Part 3. Did the university assist you in finding employment alongside your studies? I ask because our situations seem similar; we both studied for our Master's degrees in the UK. Did you manage to find employment after completing your Master's, or did you proceed directly to Part 3 without work experience? Looking forward to hearing your insights 🙂.

Hi Sumaia! I am really glad you found this information useful! Unfortunately, universities don’t provide assistance to finding a job before enrolling in the part 3! That is one of the challenges of this step even for national students. I found a job in a small practice beforehand and gained work experience in the UK before enrolling in the part 3. I hope this helps!

Sara, I disagree that the AI will be positive for Concept Designers. I have been a Architectural Illustrator (not Architect) since 1976. I see AI as a replacement tool, although I agree it has a long way to go at this point. But with the speed these AI in format design? I can see developers and builders again reverting back to training receptionist (if they still have one) to do the conception Illustration and final rendering and eventually outstanding animation. I was 43 and had just mastered the art of painting, airbrushing and perspective, then came the computer desk top revolution. I did embrace it quickly at the time, although lots of resistance from everyone including, believe it or not, young staff members. Bottom line I guess, is will you enjoy it or will the process give us less satisfaction? I do believe you are correct about Architects, if nothing else they will be able to hire younger staff at lower rates but are experienced in AI and Auto-cad. Technology has always been a double edge sword and we will just have to wait to see how this works. Just don't buy any stock in pay phone companies OK?🙄

Your TH-cam content is so good. But there are lots of workspaces, which means you need to update your video optimization. Like SEO-friendly video title selection, writing an attractive SEO-related description, and researching high-rank targeted keywords according to your niche to rank your video. It is not possible to rank the video without completing these things. By customizing these things, you will reach your goal in the TH-cam journey. The SEO score is not good. Thanks Sara! What other universities beside nottingham accepts applications for part 3, without part 1 & 2? Thanks in advance.

I am aware that there are a few over the UK but not sure where. What I would do is look at individual universities closer to where you live and check their specific requirements or send them an email and ask directly. Best of luck Sara!

Sara one more thing ! As you said in your video that do Part 3 first then do your part 1 and 2 But isn’t part three required experience? And Do London universities providing part 3 process ?

Yes, in order to take the exam for Part 3, you need to have 24 months of work experience which you can get by working in an architecture practice as a designer or Architectural assistant. I believe London universities do offer part 3 courses!

Hello! If it’s an Architecture course then I believe you are eligible to take the part 2 exam! But always best to check with the ARB before committing to taking the exam 😌

For inspiration, sure. But if you're using these as actual render, especially for university submissions or to send to clients, then you're not a designer by any metric

Hey sara, so i wanted to know a few things. i am a registered architect from Pakistan acquiring a 5 year long bachelors degree with a cgpa of 3.64 with a 1 year worth of official field experience. I am currently doing my masters in interior design with advanced practice (2-years) from teesside university in the UK. Can i apply for the ARB exams directly after my masters degree or would i need to acquire some year's worth of experience in order to be eligible to do so.

Hiya! You can apply straight away as work experience is not a requirement to take the exam. It is however very useful because some criteria are difficult to cover without work experience in the UK. Don’t hesitate to contact the ARB directly to ask about your eligibility to take the exam. They’re very helpful and reply within a few days. I hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your videos Sara, they're a bright guiding light in the chaotic world of ARB Prescribed exams. I eagerly await your new content on ARB Exam tips as I currently prepare my Part 1 & 2 exam portfolio - As an Architectural Graduate from India working in a Landscape Architecture office in UK, it would be great to receive some tips on best practices for providing evidence on GC 10.1,10.2,10.3 and more importantly GC 11.1,11.2,11.3 as there isn't much information available on the internet at all due to Intellectual property confidentiality. Looking forward to a lot more content on your channel, and hopefully some that help tackle the professional practice criteria. Thank you !

Thank you for your comment! I am so glad the videos are helping! You are right, there’s not much out there about professional criteria. It does help quite a lot when you can get work experience in an Architecture practice.
