Sharyn's Shenanigans
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ก.ค. 2021
Total newbies at towing, touring and four wheel driving we bought a Signature Hybrid van and a Prado to travel Australia. We are documenting our journey, particularly for our adult children, from learning to connect car and caravan, how to free camp, and a new hobby, watching Australia's wildlife.
Ideally travelling with my husband, John (and his jokes), after a year towing I now feel confident enough to travel solo with the car and van. So when John's at work, I'm out having the time of my life in the lesser known towns, National Parks and scrub.
I must be clear - THERE IS NO PLAN!

Budget Camping on the NSW Central Coast
Back on the road after leaving family in northern NSW we stop at an absolutely stunning National Park campsite - Boorkoom in Yuraygir NP.
Situated right on the coast, you need to see this area to believe how beautiful it place is.
What till you see what scares me in the middle of my bush walk!
We walk, we swim, we explore and relax and in the end we wish we could stay longer.

Brake Failure as we head to Adelaide
มุมมอง 1.7K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
As we continue down the Stuart Highway and towards Adelaide things get a little more serious as our Iridium's brakes fail. Not sure what the problem is we talk to @SignatureCamperTrailers and come up with a plan to investigate the problem. Along the way we stop off at Adelaides International Bird Sanctuary, spending a peaceful night at Parham. The following night we stay close to Woodside where...
Free camping from Uluru to Port Augusta

Leaving Uluru and Kata Tjuta we continue on our four month trip south along the Stuart Highway toward Port Augusta. First free camp is Agnes Creek and while there is nothing here but red dirt, a big open sky and flies we welcome the ...
Exploring Uluru & Kata Tjuta - is this our new favourite National Park?
มุมมอง 523หลายเดือนก่อน
While camping at Yulara and visiting Uluru and Kata Tjuta is expensive I was interested to see if the cost was worth it? We visit and walk everywhere we can and in the end I'm not sure. It's spectacular and beautiful but on the other hand, it's busy and comes with so many restrictions it's hard to feel that connection with the country that I wanted too. Will I go back? Maybe but I think it woul...

The blue berry plant you showed looks like a native blue flax Lilly.
Thanks for the info, so good to know that it isn't a weed. Will the blue berry on the plant eventually flower? It just looks so different to all the other flora in that area. Hope you have a great week? Sharyn
Gorgeous!!!!!!
It truely is. Would love to go when the whales are migrating. Have a great week, Sharyn
Small world, we checked out that area about a week and half ago. Loved it all, so many amazing places to explore and wow wow wow with regard to the black cockatoos, I bet I'd forget how to turn my camera on due to the excitement of being so close. Love your videos my friend and I hope others appreciate and see the beauty that you do as well. Cheers Marg
Thanks Marg, look forward to seeing your video on the area. Just watched your video, great area to walk. I would love to check it out some day. Sharyn
Thank you both for your always honest and fair review of the camp sites that you saw along your travels. Take care and l am looking forward to seeing what you both get up to next and go those mighty Dragons in 2015 🐉🐲🐲
Thanks Darren. Hope the Dragons do well in 2025 (guessing 2015 was good too) and for my peace, Cronulla have a decent season. Cheers, Sharyn
Great places to visit. Thanks for your great work as we are heading up Fraser Island in June.
Hope you enjoy the Island as much as we did. I tried to put lots of details on what to see, how to react to dingoes, ect in the K'gari video back in July. It may be useful to you. Have a great holiday, I'd go back in a second if I could. Cheers Sharyn
Fantastic, looks like lots to see, great wrap up. Thankyou!
Glad you found it informative. Cheers Sharyn
Was an Epping trip
It truely was. Looking forward to next year and an even bigger trip. Happy New Years to you both, Sharyn
You are such an asset for the camping community, what a wonderful review for all to learn from and use as a reference for their own trips, including us when we get to explore FNQ. Steve and I need to budget more and become like John with figures if we are to seriously plan to do this in our retirement. Your channel is always informative and creative, so good on you Sharyn - I am happy to give you a shout out every time. Cheers Marg
Oh gosh, what a compliment, especially from you who I respect so much. Hold onto your hat when we camp together - John is all about preparing for our retirement. Just cooking dinner and then I'll be watching your new video. Cheers Sharyn
@@sharyns.shenanigans Thank you - the respect is mutual. I wish TH-cam would be fair with showcasing more smaller channels to help the camping community find us, as I believe there are many out there with genuinely interesting content. As for hold onto your hat when we camp together, I hope you are prepared to experience one of my signature frozen Margies. Cheers Marg
@@gibbosroadtripadventures Frozen Margies, my mouth is watering. Lets do it soon!
Good info Sharyn, how far in advance did you need to book caravan park sites ?
Hi Mark, We booked Punsand and Weipa six months before leaving. Punsand actually closes over the off season (for admin as well as operating) and as soon as they reopened in January we booked via email. Other people were getting bookings on the fly, but if you want the same campsite for a few days in a row (we did four) then you need to get in early. Some people we met had to wait at Loyalty for a few days before they could get in, another couple had to move sites each night and it was a juggling act. We were very late in the season visiting Undarra and Cobbold but we did take advice of other travellers and pre-book when we were at Weipa (I think it was a fortnight previous). Even then we had to juggle between the two sites and take what Cobbold could offer us. We have been told Undarra and Cobbold can have cancellation waiting lists in the prime of the season they are so popular. In the end there are always alternatives, it's just Punsand is the closest to the tip, has the swimming pool and the best pizzas around. That's why it's so popular. Hope this helps and you enjoy your trip up there. Cheers Sharyn
This is awesome, well done Sharyn & John. I totally agree about just watching people talking into the camera, your footage and photographs complimented your review perfectly because you could see where you were talking about. When we eventually plan a trip to FNQ we'll be coming back to watch this video again for reference. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Cheers Marg & Steve
Thanks so much for the positive feedback guys. Not my favourite type of video to watch but I tried looking for one similar before we left and couldn't find one. I see you are back out on the road and cooking. Maybe we will cross paths one day. Cheers Sharyn
@@sharyns.shenanigans definitely Sharyn, sometime this year would be great. Our first video from our road trip is up right now on YT. Safe travels on your next adventure. Cheers Marg
@@gibbosroadtripadventures thanks Marg, look forward to watching it tonight.
Fist time to your channel, and really enjoyed the content. Really helpful info on places to stay. Thanks for your work.
Welcome. Thanks for the feedback. We really had a fantastic time and I think it showed as we reminisced. Watching the video with family last night we realised that I left out places like Agnes Waters, the night was camped on a working sugar farm during their harvest and even the "Funny Dunny" campsite. I try to release a video each Friday but only if its interesting (no use releasing vids just for the sake of it). This Fridays will be all the campsites, and km's travelled each day in the order of the trip. That will be the last Cape York trip videos because I'm back travelling next week. Hope you have a good week and great 2025. Cheers Sharyn
What a great recap of your trip! Thanks for sharing all those tips and tricks. We also enjoyed Undara & Cobbold Gorge last year albeit at the very beginning of the season. All the best for 2025.
So glad you got something useful out of the video. Could not make one so big every week. I'm still surprised Undara & Cobbold Gorge are not talked about more. I absolutely loved the area. Happy New Year, Sharyn
When you see your trip highlights you realise how much you saw, did and travelled, great fuel economy by the way. Thoroughly enjoyed tripping with you. We have a trip planned for this year. Driving from Perth to Broome going mostly on the inland roads then we board a boat in Broome, 20 pax only so fairly intimate and cruise the Kimberly Coast to Wyndham fly back to Broome then drive back to Kununurra to do all around the Ord etc then slowly make our way back home to Perth. Watching your trip has really shown me the Iridium 13S is certainly up to the trip. Happy 2025
Wow, your trip sounds amazing. Hope you post lots of pics? I'd love to follow. Currently have my fingers crossed that John will retire and we can go to WA with no firm return date. Happy New Year, Sharyn
Great rundown on costs happy new year.
Thanks Dean. Happy New Year to you too.
Thank you both for this bonus episode on your wonderful trip. I enjoyed the recapping of all the places that you visited. Thank you for your time, effort and sharing this experience with us all. All the very best for a wonderful 2025 🎉🎉🎉 and here’s hoping that the Dragons and the Sharks have a successful season 🤞🤞 l look forward to seeing what you get up to next.
Thanks Darren. If it's a Dragons and Sharks final we will definitely have to catch up somehow and watch it together! Fingers crossed John retires this year and we can do WA without the pressure of a return date. Cheers Sharyn
Happy new year you two. Glad to hear you shall be getting another 4 weeks in
Happy New Year to you too. John's work was so understanding and immediately changed the leave, all he had to do was give them a certificate from the doctor. I'm hoping he retires and we can do WA this year without a return deadline. Sharyn
Good luck!!!! My hubby being act gov employee he just can't bring himself to do it. But we need a farm sitter as well before we can go.
@@moniquedoherty8831 wow, and I thought it was tricky finding a dog sitter!
enjoyed watching your travels - just over 12 l per 100km is great economy for van towing
Thanks so much for watching. John was so sure that he had the maths wrong on the economy for the van towing but numbers don't lie. I think the numbers have reinforced our thoughts that this van is the right size for us while we are towing with the Prado. Have a lovely New Years, Sharyn
Good to see you are a Sharkies supporter, my brother played for them in the 90's, My wife & I hope to emulate your journey, hopefully without any issues next year.
John has followed Cronulla all his life and was lucky to be at THAT grand final. Hope you have a great trip and our thoughts help you along the way. Definitely think we will be back one day but probably WA for us next year. Cheers Sharyn

Lovely ep and great spots guys. I love Cape York my favorite spot around Aus to free camp , fish, and explore I been up 21 times in 42 years, I did the Cape and Kimberly in our old 4wd towing our 5m tinny this year and I did the Tanami and plenty on the way home, roads where all good.
Sounds like you have had a great time travelling Australia. Kimberly is on my list, hopefully next year. So many people commented that they want all the roads to the Cape sealed but I actually think it will change the experience. Have a lovely new year. Cheers Sharyn

Well there is never a dull moment with you two. I am glad that you got all your repairs done in a timely fashion and importantly that you are safe and well. It would seem getting the repairs done when you did was very fortunate as it highlighted other problems other just the breaks. John l hope that your mom is feeling better mate. Take care continued safe travels, enjoy your Christmas and New Year and l look forward to seeing what you two get up to in 2025🎉
Thanks Darren. We are so lucky we didn't turn onto the Oondnadatta Tracks, pretty sure that track would have finished what was left of the bolt holding the suspension. We are really looking forward to next year and seeing more of our beautiful country. I have my fingers crossed that John might retire (nothing concrete yet). Have a great Christmas break, Sharyn
When in Hahndorf don't mention the war............................
Curve balls hitting from all directions. Glad you got it fixed and hope John's mums ok. Have a great Christmas and many exciting adventures in 2025
Thanks for the Christmas wishes. Sadly John's mum has a long hard fight ahead of her but we were so glad that we could help and support her when she needed it. Saying that, I never need to drive over 2,000km in three days again - just torture. Have a lovely and safe Christmas. Cheers, Sharyn
That bolt on your suspension broke on our 13S too. It has to be torqued up very tight (180 nm) which is a lot for a relatively small bolt. Signature helped out with supplying the bolt and it was a relatively easy fix that I did. We also had problems with the brakes that turned out to be just a plug on one side that wasn't pushed together properly and was causing the other side to do all the work and getting hot. Another easy fix.
Good to know. John is keeping a closer eye on that area when we travel. I'm glad Signature were able to help you out. Have a great Christmas. Cheers Sharyn
Happy xmas guys corrigations test everything.
Thanks so much. All good in the end. John's mother has a fight on her hands but it's better knowing than guessing what might be. Have a great Christmas. Cheers Sharyn

Oh my you two sure got your fair share. Hope all is well now. I imagine your home now. Take care both of you.
Thanks for the good wishes. John's mother is still in the middle of fight but we have all the details now and that helps. We are home for Christmas with our three adult boys and that just makes us so happy. Have a great Christmas break and safe new year. Cheers Sharyn
Another really enjoyable episode, those sunrises and sunset shots were amazing and the Emu’s were great. John, The Air force is just like the Navy and Army, but for smart people 😊 Continued safe travels and Merry Christmas

I think we were lucky and keen to camp on our own after being at Yulara and Kings Canyon. Would happily camp at any of them again. Cheers Sharyn
Did you see the Bowling Alley at Woomera? Apparently that was the only game way they could get the Yanks there.
We did see people bowling and it was pretty popular the day we were there. I didn't know it was to attract the Yanks - how funny is that. Cheers Sharyn
As always great video , as a matter of interest how much filming do you do on your GoPro , I really struggle with the zoom in and out . Cheers Jonno and Jez
Hi guys, I do all filming on my GoPro, it's the original one I got nearly four years ago and doesn't zoom. I use Final Cut Pro and just "zoom" the actual footage. Can't do it too closely but it's enough. If I had my time again, I would look into a sony action camera. Cheers Sharyn
What wind ????
It was cold, rainy and windy when I was there but I do hope to go back in better weather. It's a beautiful part of the country. Cheers
You found a good few stops. We stayed at the Heart Lake rest area and found it quite nice. Woomera was amazing. Looking forward to your next video
Thanks Harry, bet the sunset was amazing at Lake Hart. Cheers Sharyn
Thanks for sharing your beautiful video, very informative regarding time and distances because you took pictures of the signs along the way. And lovely pictures of the birds. I have been trying to find a tour company that has this tour (south point) on their program for a long time but it seems there is none, so after watching your video I will have to try this tour myself next time I come to Australia
Hi Hans, the walk is beautiful. I didn't see any tours groups specifically going all the way to the southern most tip. There are a few companies operating out of Melbourne who do tours to Wilson's Prom but not actually the walk. If you can, hiring a car would be the best way to get to the Prom and there are some lovely places to stop along the way and visit. Maybe the company that does the boat tour would know someone (just a thought). Look forward to seeing your pics when you do come to Australia. Cheers Sharyn

@@jonnoandjez63 sounds great, hope the weather behaves.
Pls reply, Is it safe to go there on new year ? Going there from WA while camping on the way. Will it be safe as it’s too hot and summer time ?
@@natureandtravellover it will be very hot in the middle of summer. You should ask on the Uluru/Kata Tjuta National Park information site what will be open, if it's safe, ect. There are many signs indicating that some walks will be closed if the temp is too high, especially at Kings Canyon (they actually lock the walk gates). If free camping water will be very important and you should take more than you need.I think it could be uncomfortable with the heat but I've never done it at that time of the year so could say for sure. Good luck with your travels, Sharyn
That hubby of yours 😅
Haha, his a good one but sometimes he lives in his own little world.
Hi S and J Another interesting episode, once again the scenery was the star of the show. I agree $60.00 a night for an unpowered site is rude, they are just charging that much because they can and don’t care if they lose a few customers because they are making plenty from the ones that stay. Take care and continued safe travels.
Hi Darren, I think I like Kings Canyon better than Uluru for the walks to be honest but the cost of the site was a bit off putting. I didn't put it in the video, but the camp kitchens we all just open awning spaces so in the wind they were useless and not useable. Also, the facilities were a very long walk from the unpowered section.. Still all that said, I'd go back to Kings Canyon, I just loved the landscape. Cheers Sharyn
