Mental Health Graduate Programs Are TOXIC - 'Therapy-ish (ft. Danisha Baro)
In this week’s episode of ‘Therapy-ish, we sit down with New York-based therapist and doctoral candidate Danisha Baro, a licensed LPC & LMHC seeing clients in both Texas and New York. This episode is all the struggle of pursuing graduate-level education and licensure in the mental health space.
From the excessive workload expected of students who are meant to maintain a “work-life balance,” to the struggle for Brown and Black students to find community in such small cohorts, to gatekeeping measures like the GRE that keep grad school inaccessible for many, Asha and Danisha dive deep into the toxicity that surrounds grad school in mental health.
Therapy-ish was created with the mindset of removing the stigma around mental health and to help bridge the gap from the streets to the office. Our goal is to educate listeners on new ways to go about seeking help, becoming more aware of where we are, discuss therapy in traditional and non-traditional ways with expressing new ways to move forward in the world.

THANK YOU!!!!
Very helpful!
This is what i was against. My rights were relinquished against my wishes due to coercion from my sisters. I wanted my daughter to stay in my family instead of being adopted into a different family.
I'm wrapping up my master's and you are absolutely correct. Internship is tricky. Self-care is tough and secondary. How do we attract people to the healing profession? I'm training myself at this point.
it cost me $375 maybe because of my location
Explanation on point!!
This is the best explanation of Skinner I’ve had. Great video.
Can you pretty please cover test and assessment section? I am having such a hard time with it and i understand things when you explain it.
Keep videos coming
Very insightful thank you 🎉
Hi Asha! I'm a counselor in training preparing to take the NCE in a few weeks. I love your videos. The way you explain things makes some of the harder topics make perfect sense. I'm struggling with section 8, the research section, and wondered if you had any resources to help. I looked through your page but I am unsure if you have gotten the chance to make a video for this section yet. I really appricate the way your videos have helped my NCE prep! Thanks.
Great interview!
I find your videos to be so helpful and informative 👍🏾
This is so helpful thanks for sharing. God will continue to Bless you
@Asha/Crave Counseling🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰, ma'am thank you, thank you, thank you.............for all the videos and information you post/posted. Yesterday 10/2/2024, I took the NCE in Arlington, Texas....with accommodations (private room, etc). The nice older lady handed me the paper folded as I gathered my things from the locker, I just put it in my purse I couldn't look, I wanted to wait until I got home (1 hour away in 5pm traffic) LOL. Let me tell you, how a sister was thinking and talking to GOD in that room, cause of the format of those questions ma'am...LOL. The emails from Pearson were coming to my phone, but I ignored them lol, my 21-year-old finally came downstairs saying "Mom when will you know if you passed" Remembering your statement in a video, I said " I believe it's on that paper right there, I can't look", she asked if she could look👀👀👀👀, myself, and 22 year old was just standing and waiting (the 21-year-old is a prankster, she play too much), she looked over the paper saying nothing then said, "Mom you passed, you passed and with a 104!" OMG, the jumping and hollering that happened, then in mid-jump I stopped and asked "Are you reading it right" LOL, "yes" she said, and the hollering jumping, crying, and praising GOD continued LOL... I just wanted to say thank you so much, your videos played a huge part in my study regimen. I appreciate you for taking time from your business, life, and schedule to record, Glory!!!!!!!! This Texas lady passed honey!
Ayeeeeeeeee! Turn up time. I am so excited you were able to pass your exam and I am thankful the videos helped!
@@cravecounseling DID… one and Done!

These are amazing. Thank you for your help. You are a fantastic teacher and simplify things so even old people like me can get it. THANK YOU.
Absolutely! Thank you so much for your feedback! You got this!
I plan to take this test in 6 months. Sometimes i am so overwhelmed. I am studying and some things stick and others keep going over my head. I am so over it
I did a video on not taking in too much information to help prevent from being overwhelmed. You may think you don't know the information but you really do... You got this!
@cravecounseling thank you
I am praying that i pass the exam. I plan to relocate to TX. Do you offer supervision?
You got this! I do offer supervision in Texas... I always set up a discovery call first. Once you pass the test, please feel free to reach out! www.cravecounseling.com/lpcsupervision

Hi can you tutor me?
Sorry for the late response.... At this time I do not offer tutoring sessions
This video was very informative. Thanks!
Absolutely and thank you so much for watching! I hope you were able to take a lot away!
Wow this conversation was so good! Thank you so much, so many beautiful explorations and thoughts put forth here. Although women are more accepted when exploring same-sex sexual orientations, i disagree that they did/do not experience having to be down low which has more to do with gender identity + Expression. I also believe women are more accepted when their sexual orientation and gender expressions are viewed as in service to men and mens pleasure. Women-identified folks who do not center men & mens pleasure experience extreme isolation shame and abuse from black religious spaces. Love this channel , be Blessed !
Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. Yessssss that is very true, I do have some friends who had to operate within a heterosexual world because of that as well... I have heard so many women say it was more acceptable because of the schedule desires/pleasures others may have around the idea of having multiple women at one time.... And yessss women identified folks who don't are very isolated and shamed
This was real good🤩🤓.Would you ever want to do this on DBT, or REBT, and or Gestalt. 🙇🏽♀🙇🏽♀🙇🏽♀
omg lol I Iive for that apt complex memory thing. 👏🏽
Thank you and I will probably do GESTALT but I don't think the others are on the exam... If they are, then I definitely will!
@@lmsski8062 Gotta get creative sometimes lol!
Thanks
Absolutely!
I wish i would have found your videos sooner. They are very helpful. I took my NCE in Texas last week and failed. 😢 But ive been studying and writing notes. But your videos are really helpful. Thank you for your time.
This was GREAT!!! The sample questions and the explanations after each question! So helpful!
Absolutely and thank you for watching! I took some feedback from previous videos so I am trying to make them better and better each video...
For the punishment, I thought taking away would be negative not positive
Hi! Thanks for watching so because that question cause so much controversy based on how I explained the response. I did a video breaking it down further… I think the diagrams will help explain what I was trying to say in this video for that question… Try watching this one…. m.th-cam.com/video/Vfz7V1S4PGY/w-d-xo.html
Hello! I know this is random but I just want to express my appreciation to you for making these videos. I’ve been watching your videos for the past 3 months to help me with my self review for our Board Examination for Guidance Counselors here in the Philippines and your videos were one of the things which helped me passed the recent examination ❤️ I’m just happy to share this with you since your videos were truly helpful. You are a great inspiration to many young and aspirant counselors. I hope that you continue to make these videos so that others can also learn and achieve their dreams, just like me 🙏🏻 Thank you so much! 🙏🏻❤️ - from your silent fan and now a registered guidance counselor 🫶🏻
I am so sorry for the late response but thank you so muchhhhhh and I am so glad you passed! Welcome to the other side!
Great info thanks…I’ll be graduating soon with Masters…3 more classes to go WhewHoooo!
You got this! Can't wait to practice alongside you!
Great job, very informative!
Thank you so much and thank you for watching! I hope you were able to take something from it!
I am a graduate student in Alabama and I paid $350.00 to take the NCE. There are 200 questions now.
Yes, if you take it in graduate school it is $100 more unfortunately ... Yesssss 200 is a lot... I was strong the first 150, when I got to that last 50, my brain was fried 🙃... When are you scheduled to take it?
thank you for the video . i passed today . wasn’t a lot of math question but it lowered my anxiety
Congrats and welcome to the other side! I am so happy you passed and the math videos helped reduce that anxiety... Whoop whoop!
that symbol around ur neck is against Christianity just letting you know
Your comment is against Christianity as well... just letting you know!! Have a good one!!
❤thank you
Absolutely and thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for all that valuable info you share. My question is, you don't recommend tutoring online? I'm studying for the NCE, and your advice is priceless.
I don’t have any recommendations on whether to join online tutoring or not… I would say if I was in a position in which I failed the NCE, I might seek out tutoring but as far as my first attempt, I would create a routine for myself, maybe find some classmates to study remotely with over a few weeks and then pass the exam butttttttt if I were to fail it I would try to find a class with an instructor… Again personal opinion/thoughts, not advice… I hope I answered your question thoroughly… If you are someone who needs someone to teach the information to you then go for it but most people usually can maintain focus for 15 mins at a time so if you’re with someone for 8 hours which is how most of the study programs are set, you have to ask yourself whether or not you have the capacity to sit for 8 hours and what are you hoping to get from the program and if it makes sense based on your learning style…
Thank you for your videos. They were helpful and relevant to the test. I passed today🙌🏽
Yayyyyyy! I am so happy you passed! Thank you for watching!
Do you offer in TX as of July 2024? I’m have a lot of difficulty finding a supervisor.

Hello, are you near Saint Louis?
Hi, I am not physically located in St. Louis but I am licensed in Missouri to offer supervision
Thank you so much for this information!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
I love it. This video is helpful
Absolutely! Thank you for watching!
Hi! I’m a recent Master’s graduate moving to Texas from Indiana! Would you suggest on applying for LPC-A jobs now or would I have to wait until I pass my test?! Also, any suggestions on looking for supervisors in the Texas area?!
Hi! Most places will not hire you without the license. I would recommend pass the test first if you have not, then reach out to find supervisors and be sure to thoroughly interview them... Apply for the license and then apply... Also add to your resume somewhere in the meantime "Anticipated LPC-Associated License Month, 2024" or add "Scheduled to take NCE exam Month Day, 20XX"
This is soooo helpful! I really needed a tutor who would break everything down for me and you did just that! Thank you!
I am glad these videos are helpful without spending the extra money... Finding a good tutor with the capacity to teach can be hard....
The median is incorrect. The median is the middle numbers when places in chronological order
Hi thanks for the feedback, math rules state the following: For an even number of observations, take the two middle numbers, add them together and divide by 2 . So the list of numbers placed in order from least to greatest is: 1 3 3 6 8 9…. leaving the two middle numbers as 3 & 6. Add them together and you get 9. 9 divided by 2 is 4.5
I’ve always been so intimidated by math but watching this video really simplified things for me! I’ve watched all your videos multiple times. Today, I took the NCE and passed!! Thank you!
Congratulations on your recent success? I’m thankful the videos were helpful… I appreciate you for watching!
