I went to the only Finnish 🇫🇮 town in Brazil 🇧🇷 called Penedo. In the theme of the coming holidays I chose to make a bit of a Christmas themed video. Penedo is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro close to the border of the state of São Paulo. Its quite a small town and very touristy and though not many Finnish residents are left it still shows a little bit of it's Finnish culture. Subscribe ...
Visiting the Most German 🇩🇪 City in Brazil 🇧🇷 Pomerode

I went to the Most German 🇩🇪 City in Brazil 🇧🇷 called Pomerode. Pomerode is a city of Pomeranian heritage which also gave it it's name. The city was founded all the way back in the 1800s. Here you can find many old Pomeranian style houses with slight Brazilian modifications. The city also has a significant number of German speakers and is considered the most German city in Brazil by Brazilians....

Oh yeah I see it now l 😂
I am from Southtirol and this is just nuts great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it! I want to visit South Tirol one day too. It sounds like an amazing place
these pesky immigrants dont want to adapt to the local culture
Nahh it was mostly unsettled lands.
@LewisWirth of course
South of Brazil have more germans than Germany these days lol
Wow you’re overestimating it a little bit there mate. I think Brazil as a whole is third. Germany and Austria are first and second then Brazil then counties like Italy Belgium Denmark Liechtenstein and Luxembourg
Oida is des fertig 😂
No mitä ihmettä. Pikku Suomi. Kaikkee sitä
If a referendum were held there as to whether they wanted to be part of Austria, then everyone would certainly say yes because then they would have the same rights as in Austria and Austria would have access to the sea for the first time after the end of World War I and could also have a navy again set up
What are you talking about? Access to the sea? This is a town far inland in southern Brazil. What does that have to do with Europe. South Tirol wouldn’t even give Austria access to the sea they’d need all of Slovenia if they wanted that or to reunite with Germany again
Schiavoni were also building what you call "Venetian" today. Their names rebranded and rewritten. A lot of architecture, literature, music, technology...was done by "Schiavoni" and is attributed to Venetians today.
They’re decent a of those Venetians?
@LewisWirth No. What I'm saying is Slavic people of Dalmatia and Istra were forced to change their names in order to get jobs. Sometimes their names were changed by force or manipulation. This area is SLAVIC. CROATIAN. And more Venetian culture and architecture is done by Croatians than people will ever know.
@@cetterus Ohhh, I don't know how much of that is true but sure sounds interesting
@LewisWirth you don't know because... you never came across that info? You don't believe strangers writing stuff like that on internet to begin with? You came across a lot of other, opposite arguments so far? Sounds unreliable? You think someone would invent such data? For which reason exactly? You think this wasn't practice couple of centuries ago (again based on, preferably a lot of opposing data)?
@@cetterus It sounds plausible the architecture is probably a mix. I'm sure that this is far more the case in Pula for example Pula had quite a number of buildings that seemed roman inspired but didn't seem that old. But I find it much harder to believe that it applies to the same extent to this old little town. And btw you're also a random guy on the internet. I just went to the town that was said to be the most Italian in Croatia on Wikipedia. This is quite an old video of mine so that was approximately the extent of my research back then. I tend to do more research now but still also value what people that I meet tell me this was very valuable in Brazil because often there wasn't much information available online. Sometimes there was barely any. I'm still proud of how well the video turned out for me just having started making videos. I learned a lot that I was able to improve on for my much bigger and more important trip to Latin America and all the Croatians and Italians fighting with each other in the comments did help my channel get noticed just a little bit in the beginning that was also nice. You should watch the video from Pula, that one is arguably less well made then this one but I wonder what you'll think of that one. Right now I'm working on a video on Italian towns that I visited in the South of Brazil. Still thanks for your comments, and thanks for watching my video
O brasileiro, ai falo alemão. A realidade: pfff
Don't ask what their family was doing in 1940
Dude the town was founded in 1933 arranged by the emperors wife or something and some people said an old prime minister had something to do with it but idk where doofus came in idk
Wow thats insanely beautiful
The Landscape is much better than in the US. All kinds of traditions can be kept in a really good condition. The weather is more gentle. It’s really nice to see little old Dutch, German towns in Brazil. Big cities, blocks and Autobahns are just soo boring to look at it. People are more likely to talk about how to improve living standards, new technology but rarely think about how to preserve old traditions. Old traditions don’t necessarily mean slums. It’s rich in cultures and heritages, European heritages and cultures, things may disappear in the coming decades due to modernisation. A kind of make-over and standardised just like fast fashion, low quality clothing and being swept away so quickly. The cost of environment and natural resources are HUGE! Externalities are too high.
I think you’re getting a few assumptions wrong about Brazil though other things I agree with. First of all Brazil is very car dependent outside of major cities. They do have great bus services but not much aside from that. I have visited many small towns that were a pain to visit with public transport and others that were outright impossible to visit using public transportation. During the military dictatorship when Brazil joined world war 2 they made it illegal to speak German Italian Japanese Dutch and so. On this was a very hard time for these communities and really reduced the amount of speakers of the languages. Now there days a lot of communities have kinds of revivals of their language and culture some communities have been providing from tourism for a long time other communities have cultural organizations and are trying to get tourism to their city like Registro for example which is a Japanese city between São Paulo and Curitiba. I do believe that there’s a place for both big metropolises and these nice small little cities that have different cultures. I personally prefer the latter I grew up in the countryside myself. But I’m glad you found my videos and that you like them. I hope you can find other videos of mine that you’ll also enjoy
And nazist killers, doctor mengele above the other, spent a quiet life there. Shame and disgust
Seriously? Don’t tell me you believe that Mengele bullshit that I’m really sick of at this point. He worked in Buenos Aires at the Mercedes factory for some time. I’m not sure if he ever went to Brazil later. But all the things he’s been accused of. You should listen to the testimonies they go from cartoonish accusations to people that say he was alright and other cartoonish accusations that aren’t at all in line with the former cartoonish accusations. A lot of people like to use his name to get more views and attention and so on but I just find it scummy so I’ve decided not to add more to those lies. I know that it’s Al’s most unheard of that people actually look into people like this honestly and look into the allegations they used to be easy to find. Even recordings of inmates in their later years which I’m mainly referring to.
@LewisWirth yeah there may have been an exaggeration here or there, but i mean, youre not one of those guys, are you? the ones raised on the green imageboard?
@ never really used 4chan I’ve watched some funny documentaries on it though like the Shia Leboef stuff was hilarious. Having different values is one thing but I to not question the status quo’s and to not hear the other side of propaganda but still spread it, I don’t like that. Another good example is North Korea there’s a lot I don’t like about their policies but Juche makes perfect sense in their situation. The massive embargo on them is the main reason why they’re so poor. That’s even more of a reason than their bad communist policies. The fact that they got nuclear weapons makes perfect sense as the US was pointing them at them. For any kind of just union or unity with the south the south might need to get nuclear weapons themselves to be able to be on an even footing and be able to get the US out of the picture. Because it’s kind of true that South Korea is a US puppet. Not entirely but similarly to all the European nations where the US has military bases. North Korea is a little nation against the world cause they’re targeted by the entire world. Even if they became capitalist but with a good standard for example they’d still be seen as an enemy because they don’t let themselves be exploited. And they might still end up lik Gaddafi. Long story but I’ve been thinking about it a lot because I’d like to visit the DPRK I’m learning Korean
Brazil is an awful nation. Milions of starving people, half population in despair, third world favelas on one side, and on the other disgusting rich persons...a shameful country where fee happy people live near milions of poors. Shame, disgust, horror...these are the feelings that brazil inspires to me.🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
lol Afrikaans with a Spanish accent. it's Like English with an African Accent, exactly like Julius Malema. Fascinating!
Yeah funny right. I didn’t notice that much difference personally but I’m Dutch myself so less tuned to it but it was definitely interesting and the people were lovely I’m still in contact with some of them today
@ wunderbar
I wonder what their forefathers were doing from 1939 - 1945 hmmm
The town was founded in 1933. Something in relation with the wife of the emperor she was Austrian. If I’m not getting things infused. Either way it was founded in 1933
Brazil is literally a country made of imigrants from different continents so there is a little bit of everything in it, but a little sad too because most of people lost their original culture and identity
It’s sad that some of the culture got lost most of that is probably because it was clamped down on during ww2 but I still find it absolutely amazing how much is still left regardless. I also found it very surprising that’s why I chose to make these videos
hahah sehr toll! Niemand kann es glauben dass es Brasilien ist! Ich weiß wie das ist! Ich freue mich auf diesen Videos!! Dankeschön!! Wenn du willst komm wieder zurück!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤗🤗
Danke schon.

Congratulations , from a brazilian new sub If you come by the state of ES give me a hit .. We have lots of small towns of german / pomeranian , and italian colonies. But also a lot of very original and raw brazilianess.. 😁 , .. lot of cool places in the state .
Thanks man that means a lot. I try very hard to keep it all authentic interesting personal and so on. I hope to be back in 2026. Hope to be able to visit Espírito Santo then
love Brazil and Austria from Norway 🇳🇴❤
I love Brazil too mate 🇧🇷
In zones with particularly high % of tourists from certain regions (German tourists in the "Germanic" South, French tourists to beaches in the Northeast, etc.) locals in the hospitality trade are aggressive language learners (even if they didn't grow up with these second languages). The Germanic looking towns in the South are not really meant to be 100% authentic, but mainly to attract upper class Brazilian tourists who want to enjoy "cold" weather holidays for a few days (use their expensive leather jackets and cashmere, eat fondue and drink sweet wines). I think the best analogy is to think of this as 1/3 Disneyland, 1/3 people who are 3rd to 5th generation Germanic on average (so more like Pittsburg than Berlin) and 1/3 for Brazilian consumption. Really "fusion", like a Japanese take on an American hamburger... or should I say German hamburger =)
Yeah some towns are much like a little Disneyland for example Blumenau which is very plastic but also Gramado or in SP there’s Campo do Jordao and in Rio state there’s Penedo which has Finnish history but it’s just like a little Disney park now. But this city does have a little bit more history before all the tourist came and it’s quite remote it’s so far inland and so far away from anything else that it’s probably a bit harder to be as Michele a tourist spot as some of those other cities like Gramado is better connected and had many other things to see and Simon the region. Pomerode and the nearby Timbo are much more authentic. Also for example Sao bento do sul though that is not a touristy city at all it has lots of German history but the language is waning a lot there. Many Japanese decente still speak some and some speak it well but they at almost always illiterate in Japanese because the language was banned and it’s difficult to learn to read and write, I even heard the same with German speakers that they couldn’t read or write. I thought myself that it wouldn’t be so hard to read it if you can read Portuguese and you can speak German but writing I understand you can’t do much guesswork there. Anyway it’s nice to see your interest in the topic but I did notice the same I also mentioned it on some occasions and the fondue is very common indeed and can be quite good too. Some places are better then others though
As an Austrian, this is so cool to see, this place really gives off a kinda of "home" vibe for me, and a sense of familiarity, greetings and love to brazil🇦🇹❤️🇧🇷
Yeah it’s crazy right? I’ve been to Austria 🇦🇹 a few time to go skiing and though some things like the road infrastructure the amount of advertising, electric poles and type of vegetation/climate are a bit out of place it looks surprisingly Austrian 🇦🇹🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 I’m glad you enjoyed it I hope you can find some other videos that you like just as much
I was born and raised in switzerland but I'm an austrian citizen. Watching this video just blew my mind lol
Wouldn’t that mean you can just apply for Swiss 🇨🇭citizenship?
@LewisWirth swiss citizenship is very hard to get and austria doesnt allow dual citizenship. But yea i also speak swiss german
@ from what I heard you had to speak one of the languages and live there 5 years and I’m guessing it would be a more beneficial passport then the Austrian one but maybe I’m wrong
@LewisWirth 10 years and the process costs around 5K swiss francs which is around 5.5 K in USD. Gotta do a test on national level which is easy, one on cantonal level which is also not too difficult if you learn for it and one last one in level of the town you live in. The last one is horible. There are a few random people from the town that can ask u whatever they want. Heard many people that had to sing there, name the amounts of fountains in the city or how every restaurant is called etc. Just stupid stuff. In the end they decide (those random people) if they wanna suggest you as a citizen. *If* they do, you have to speak infront of the local parliment why you want to become a citizen and if they also approve. Youre in! If any of this fails, u just waisted 5K on a random lunatic from ur village that doesnt lile you because of X reason. I have ties to austria and switzerland and as soon as austria gives up on their stupid dual citizenlaw id try to get the swiss citizenship.
@ alright makes sense that 5K seems a bit much on top of the rest. But on the other hand good they don’t just hand out passports like they do in a lot of other countries that has its drawbacks too. If you only had to pay the 5K after actually getting approved by the village it’d be good. Anyway my country the Netherlands doesn’t allow dual citizenship either except for the people that it shouldn’t allow it for (none Dutch people) I’m thinking of atleast getting residency elsewhere at first. Somewhere with better taxes and so on but not somewhere like Dubai where I can’t criticize Islam
This is the Brazil that stupid media never shows, the most diverse country in the world indeed, not only in people but in cultures
It probably indeed the most diverse country in the world
South Tyroleas leftto Brazil before Austria‘s defeat in WWI. not far there is Nueva Trento, who was built by Welschtiroler, meaning the Italian speakers of the old historical Tyrol
I went to Nova Trento, wouldn’t say it’s that close but it’s in the same state. I mean for Dutch standards it’s not close
so impressive to see that many people speaking german in Brazil lmao us brazilians know that these german/austrians colonies exist, but 99% of brazilians has never seen another brazilian speaking in these languages. awesome vid, keep it up!
I’m glad you enjoyed it this is what I’m trying to show the world
Europe will go bankrupt again and they will flee to Brazil again
The day we settle some things like public safety and education, we will be a great nation

I want to go to Korea this year. But yeah that thing was funny glad I filmed that bit
11:00 DID HE JUST REFERENCE FALCO??? LMAOOO
I’ve heard the saying before but I don’t know who Falco is
@LewisWirth He's an Austrian artist that had a #1 hit in the US in the 80s with his song "Rock me Amadeus" (the only German song to ever do so).The line "Alles klar Herr Kommissar" comes from a different song of his called "Der Kommissar". You're welcome!
@ ahhh ok funny. Thanks for explaining
Im studying both German and Portuguese at university so this is interesting
Oh interesting. Then there’s more videos for you to watch on my channel
I am a Brazilian living in Austria, that is pretty cool hahahaha
it's nice seeing German speaking communities independent of the German/Austrian state and all the nonsense politics that comes with it.
Oh if you want to hear political nonsense and people calling each other names then you should read more of the comments 😂 mos of those are in Portugese tough. Other videos are better
