Undertale and 'Canon'

TS!Underswap but Google Translated was a wild experience, with this playthrough focusing on the game's Ruthless Route. Why TS!Underswap Chara is Amazing (Analysis)
มุมมอง 28K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Chara in Undertale, is a character that has generated a lot of discussion and caused a lot of split opinions throughout the fanbase; This isn’t all that surprising though considering the role they play in Undertale. Although I’ve never really been satisfied with their portrayal by the general fandom or many other fanworks. This made their depiction in the fangame TS!Underswap a pleasantly surpr...
Ngl, TS!Underswap's Genocide ending might become way sadder than Undertale's. Think about it: Chara is "swayed", I'd say since they're a kid and likely naive, into killing an entire town, begins to feel good about it as FOR ONCE she feels in control and "strong", only to begin to feel bad about her actions (following the theory of the actions like leaving Larry and Harry are signs of Chara wanting to stop), try to stop, but somehow, still thinking she's in control, still attacks them. Not only that, but after their fight with Sans, they desperately try to yell for help but are forced by an entity (Which I strongly believe to be Frisk in some way) not to do so, making her so frustrated she begins yelling at others. I don't even want to imagine how much more they'll have to go through in the rest of their journey.

Asriel really thought highly of Chara…he was too blind to see anything else.
@@fabianrolandoquirogatellez1148 I don’t think his values were completely misplaced, but Chara definitely is not the greatest to idolize yeah.
@@kamera1890 it’s kinda sad y’know, he was feeling lonely and thought he could trust them. Not to mention also the fact that regardless of you being a jerk in a true pacifist route (by jerk I mean by being mean or telling rude comments) Asriel still thinks you’re “the friend he wishes he always had”. It’s clear that he’s been looking for someone who he could trust, a “true friend” but the reality is more disappointing. True friends aren’t real, most of them are with you for convenience or they’re just being polite and try not to hurt your feelings by not saying you that they don’t really care “that much” about you, that’s when you realize they weren’t “the greatest person” after all. Yep, monsters are indeed very weird. As soon as they barely meet someone, they already consider them as “true friends” it’s a naivety that will costs them their lives on a genocide route. My guess is that he was desperate to find someone to talk to. He himself stated he felt lonely, so I can understand why he put Chara on a pedestal and ignore their flaws. It’s kinda sad, it’s pretty obvious that since he was an only child, he saw Chara as a way to fill that urge to have a sibling or someone who he could trust and talk about everything. For later being disappointed about how it turned out, it’s almost like a one sided friendship, I see how much he invested on Chara he even made lockets for the two of them, so they could wear it, just for later Chara caring very little if not anything about him. That could also explain why once he became a flower decided to change his worldview. In one neutral ending he suggest to the player to just “go through it without caring about anyone” since after all the player will eventually lose contact with his friends and never seen them again. It’s clear that Flowey followed the advice he gave to the player. Once Chara died and Asriel understood that they’ll never come back, he decided to never care about anyone ever again so he won’t be hurt again. And also due to him feeling emotionally numb and not being able to feel the emotions he once felt when he was with Chara. He himself says that even IF that person was still there with him, he wouldn’t care about them at all as well. And the only think he wants now is someone with the same struggles as him but now as “Flowey” after he was disappointed about how the things turned out as “Asriel”.
@@kamera1890What I don’t get it is why neither Asgore nor Toriel mentions Chara as his “sibling” but only Asriel as their son. Toriel remembers Chara more as an old acquaintance than an adopted child. But the other monsters do address them as “siblings” ¿Does that mean the time in which Chara was in the underground was short enough to not form any personal bond with the Dreemurrs or them consider Chara as his “sibling” but also long enough for the monsters to address them as “siblings”? Isn’t that a plot hole? Chara may have not been in the underground for a long time as expected, if that’s the case, then doesn’t that also affect the bonding between them and Asriel? If the time was short that could explain why they were so focused on his plan than actually bonding with Asriel just like you said they were known to be efficient in what they do, so they knew that they needed Asriel in order to get out of the underground. What if they didn’t actually meant to free the monsters but instead have Asriel’s body in order to destroy the humanity? Let’s not forget that Chara and Asriel had control over one body, and they were as far as I can tell the ones who used more Asriel’s body, they even carried their one body, the only time in which Asriel could control himself was when he returned injured to the underground, and when he hesitated to kill/defend himself when the humans attacked him. Isn’t that a manipulative tactic? It’s like you tell someone what he wants to hear for later use them as an advantage, forcing them to be on a situation that they don’t want to so the other person can take control of it and do what he pleases. But why the other monsters said that they became “siblings” over time? Maybe Asriel was the one who proposed that idea to his parents and since they loved him so much they decided to follow that idea, so they’ll tell the others what Asriel thinks about Chara.
Can you even blame Asriel for being isolated and has no friends at his age other than Chara? Also, at the end, Chara is likely a wounded child mentally but is very good at hiding it. But is Chara even 100% evil here? At the end, they're just children. Ik this is corny af, but children are always the one who fcked the most when they're at difficult times.
This letter is quite interesting not just in chara’s characterization and their past but also just the meta. “But isn’t it scary, to think there’s a highest number? That, if you made 99 good memories, you couldn’t hold anymore. So I don’t like to keep count of the flowers we pick, or the times that they laugh, or how many scary faces they make. I just hope we’ll be friends for 999 more years.“ In the metanarrative Chara represents the addiction to number based rewards. While numbers and stats have a limit, memories dont. Frisk is the memories, joy, and emotional attachment to the game. They represent that. Stats and power may be fun to get but just one shotting everything is boring and theres no joy in that. You may have reached the absolute but whats the point now? Wheres the cool challenging boss? It doesnt matter how much of a stat you have, all that matters is the memory and joy you get from playing the game, getting to know the characters and enjoyng heartfelt stories. That transcends stats and numbers which have limits. Just playing for the sake of play. I find it interesting that Asriel sort of conceptualized what Frisk is even before theyre even born.
@@Kakishirocream That’s an interesting angle for Frisk, although the lines revolving around Asriel feel particularly relevant as well. For the monster who disliked the notion of there being a “cap” to the memories, it’s quite ironic how as Flowey he saw it all.
@@kamera1890 he ended up living in his worst nightmare. Also “Frisk… you were the friend i wish i always had” just hits harder for me after reading the letter
@@Kakishirocream Asriel is my baby

Happy Birthday, Chara.
This was an incredible video. Are there any other games you feel used game design to enhance the story that are worth checking out?
@@fruitrings2238 Thank You! And for other games that use great Ludonarrative Harmony, this video got another comment talking about One Shot, which I think does this really well. For an example from me though, I think Omori is extremely good with using its game design to enhance its story at certain points.
I really enjoyed this video and it's a shame you don't have any more subscribers so I'm writing this comment to hopefully boost the video🤞🤞🤞
"Nothing can hurt anyone anymore" This makes me think back to Genocide. In a world that we can manipulate with the press of a button. The only way for them to stop us is to destroy the world. I mean post Genocide has some discussion points but I believe Chara did try to stop us some way. Post Genocide could be manipulation, to make us not want to repeat Genocide with the whole demon talk. "Nothing can hurt anyone anymore, if no one and nothing exists."
I think the “Nothing Can Hurt Anyone Anymore” line is far more pertinent to pre-death Chara rather than Geno Chara. Geno Chara literally calls you a partner, and just wants you to erase this world and move to the next world.
@@kamera1890 true. But for some reason something tells me that a lot of what they say is to just hide their true intentions. As most people don't want to leave the game behind and that point and I think Chara knows that.
30:48 you said a wrong gender, you slipped out HE in "If he didn't have to follow orders." Samus is a girl.
That’s not what I said though, I said “if YOU didn’t have to follow Adam’s every order.” I was referring to the Player, who is synonymous with Samus here in this case.
To add to the stuff about 9: A lot of the unused songs revealed during this anniversary related to Power of NEO. And do you know what OST number it is? 99.
chara still best villain
They're not a villain where did you get that idea?
@@VioletGG4 Depends on the route.
@@somechupacabrawithinternet8866 I don’t really seem them as a “villain.” Because they’re literally a reflection of your desires. I covered this more in my last video though if you want to hear me explain that more in-depth.
@@StarwayBunny??? They literally say your genocide.
Man, FNAF and Undertale fandoms are definitely having a field day this month.
So the implications is because they were hurt on the surface they wished to end their suffering by going to the underground. Where they met the Dreemurrs who only gave them love. My guess is the implications that Chara specifically tells Asriel to get six human souls. Even when Asriel isn’t too sure what number they did is an indicator they planned to shatter the barrier. But we also know as naive as Asriel was he knew they would have had to wage war against all of humanity. And Chara also purposely sparked this by asking them to deliver their body to the flower bed in the village. Chara was probably told stories of how humans showed no hesitation and no mercy to monsters during the war even when it seemed unnecessary. So they probably empathized with their mistreatment So I imagine them becoming “invincible” was getting the seven human souls alongside Asriel and crafting a world where “nothing can hurt anyone anymore” by waging over and defeating humanity. As the hero of monsterkind
Possibly! Although to correct one thing in this comment, we know from Asriel that when he absorbed Chara's soul Chara and Asriel split control of their body, and that Chara was the one who carried their own body.
@@kamera1890 Yeah. I imagine Chara wanted to get Asriel to fall in line by seeing humans mercilessly attack them
@@kyleb7974 I think that was a part of it, although I tend to be more charitable in this regard. I don't think it was just that they wanted Asriel to see how merciless humans were, but also that those flowers just genuinely had sentimental value to Chara. Chara is unfortunately a very vague character though, so it's hard to know whether their motivations in this regard were more pure or tainted.
@@kamera1890 I’d probably go with the latter but more so with good intentions. Their hatred for humanity was probably kept close to them. And when they came to the underground they were cared after by monsters who just so happened to also be harmed by humans. Perhaps this was Chara’s way of fulfilling their justice. The prophecy. And Asgore’s high pedestal of being the saviour and hopes of monsterkind.
=)
Ugh... Just wait until someone makes a theory about this that says "ThIs Is A tEAsEr FoR tHe NeXt SeCrEt BoSs!"
I know! I've already seen some tweets suggesting this is for Asriel and Dess, or the other mysterious letter sender. DR fans will do anything but let us get any form of Chara content.

Cool
Not entirely related but I think the reason I love ts!underswap but didn’t connect much with yellow is it’s humor. ts made me laugh countless times just like utdr while yellow was only somewhat funny to me during the Axis segments. I Love Count Koffin K:] ts just fits perfectly with utdr’s writing style while yellow feels like an rpg that happens to take place in an interpretation of undertale’s world (also yellow not diving into meta stuff, which is what elevated utdr for me, besides maybe the nutrual route’s ending kinda, really gives yellow a different vibe which I didn’t connect with). This is obviously just my opinion. (Also I just didn’t really care for Yellow’s characters besides Axis, Clover & maybe Starlo but that’s besides the point.) To balance my negativity tho I will say that yellow has stellar music and some of the most fun battles and battle gimmicks I’ve had the pleasure of playing in a utdr fangame
I personally prefer TS!Underswap as well, but both fangames are very good.
1:27 Could be also a reference to the prophecy and the angel's heaven. If you think about it, the angel's heaven it's probably depicted as a higer place. Also, it is related to the dark worlds, where "everything can be healed with a spell" (taken from canon dialogue).
Something that it also could be referencing (that I wish I included more in the video) is how Asriel might've also intrepreted that advice of being invicible, which would give more context to his stats in the Omega Flowey fight.
Can't wait for Undertale's 99th anniversary when we get more Chara and Asriel content
Perhaps the 19th anniversary?
19 is your lv when you fight sans
Can’t wait for the 19th and 20th anniversary
i feel like the 9th anniv focuses on chara because THE NUMBER 9
Absolutely yeah.
Soooooo... there are two things I gathered from this: 1) Chara has a fascination with the number 9. I wasn't expecting that (sort of thought that was more of a soulless Chara thing) but eh, it's fits lol. I'm sure the Chara Defense sub reddit will make some good memes out of it, which will be fun to see 2) Wow, I am actually getting teary eyed-
Chara is actually just a massive 999 fan
@@wesleyc5713 Cannon event, can see 🙏
CHARA FANS ARE EATING TODAY!!!!! (Literally doesnt change anythig but its always Nice to see more Chara and Asriel)
Did you play outertale
I have not played PS!Outertale yet, although I've seen a lot about it
Huh????
The Chara Grind never stops 🙏
So I like a lot of the discussion, but I wouldn't posit that Chara on the whole is actually what they claim to be in this scene*, save in the idea that it's what we made them into, and what we taught them, having killed all their family and friends, with no one able to stop us because of our stats. As a subscriber to the narrator Chara theory, I would posit that they actually have a really nice and friendly personality, making puns and providing commentary full of personality. I view the end screen on no mercy as kind of getting back at the player in many ways, and an extension of the fact that not only have we literally destroyed the "world" of Undertale already, but we've already destroyed the point and meaning of the game, by going against everything that it represented, including destroying who our interpreter and thereby connection to the world, the narrator, is, and forced the traditional rpg values onto them and the world by our actions. Just my take on it. Also, loved the metroid and celest bits. Sadly, I've kind of spoiled metroid (among many others) as a game for myself *edit: this scene being the Chara void scene
I think that Chara can be both, I am a subscriber to NarraChara, but symbolically in the geno route specifically they are clearly meant to represent the overgrinding RPG player, your "true character."
Fantastic video!
Im so glad you enjoyed the metroid series enough to make a video on it. Glad i could help.
I think Oneshot uses Its game mechanics very well to include it in the story. For example when you close the game the world that the main protagonist, Niko is in goes completely dark and they are aware of that and comment on it every time you reopen the game.
@@rapidstang47 I loove Oneshot
so cool
coool video dawg
YEAHHH IT'S FINALLY OUT! I'll edit this comment with my opinion on it once I'm finished watching it Edit: Alright, I've finished the video. This is one of the greatest game design videos I have ever seen! You've pretty much perfectly covered all of Undertale's UBER-ludonarrative harmony. It's also interesting how Metroid is able to manipulate your sense of freedom so well, and Celeste's Farewell is absolute PEAK. None of these games would be so great if it weren't for the fact that they're, well, games. And this also goes back to OMORI's manga and how many people feel it doesn't live up to OMORI's game standards. In short, games are cool, and people need to learn to appreciate them the way they do films and novels :)
I’m glad you enjoyed it so much hehe, and you cooked. This is likely why the Omori Manga has not been doing so well in terms of adaptation.
the opposite of harmony in musical terms is dissonance, so ludonarrative harmony is objectively correct. Nice!
oh yeah, here we go. let's do this shit!

I think I know what it is. It’s frisk more specifically what frisk represents
@@Averagebasementman I’ve had a ton of comments suggest this too, it’s possible although not really the point of the video
what about the evacuation route ?
@@ZeksDeks This route will likely be similar to the Ruthless route in mechanics, although with a more hopeful tone (and probably less difficult encounters)
12:30 My headcannon for crossbones is that’s it Semi cope. Chara is coping about the fact they didn’t kill Crossbones the person but rather Crossbones the character. They marked them as eradicated as they clearly knew it was a cardboard cutout(when you check on it Chara comments about it.) but Sans probably won’t show their face as crossbones anymore after the failure to stop them.
Jee, man you gotta give us subtitles, I can't hear ya
Mm yeah, since this was my first video I wasn’t used to adjusting my mic quality. TH-cam’s auto-generated subtitles are surprisingly accurate though if you want to use those.
My prediction: The Horse Stable will appear in this chapter.
