Great interview. I think, had he won S., he would have been a force to reckon with on the Eurovision stage, not just because of the message of his song, where immigrants from outside the so-called west, especially those from Arab countries, can really identify with its lyrics, but also because of the whole situation in Gaza right now and people solidarizing with Palestine. And it would have been a real competitor to Israel's propaganda song in the televote. Yet, some right-wingers chose the 2nd song in the Superfinal (that's why Superfinals shouldn't exist, neither should national finals like BF up until now, where they're revealing the semi-final results before the final is taking place), not because they liked Hera Björk's song, but because they voted against his song. Just like with Austria 2012, where Trashittaz won due to the anti Conchita vote, or BF 2023, where Blanca Paloma won due to the anti Agoney vote. All 3 of these songs (not so) coincidentally finished last place. When even people who voted for a song in the nf aren't convinced by it, then how can you convince people to vote for it on an international stage, with much harder competition, and without the gay or Palestinian person you wanted to defeat in the running? Nothing against Hera, she's definitely better than Trashittaz and Blanca Paloma, but this song just wasn't it. But voting for a song just to oust another song never leads to good results at Eurovision. Hopefully, he can follow into Conchita's footsteps, go to Eurovision and win. Same thing goes for Agoney.

Great interview. While I believe that these people who've sent hate comments on the internet aren't actual eurofans (who actually supported her and sang along each word, etc), but rather bots, trolls, and PiS supporters (and maybe hardly anyone in real life, not even in Poland) who're mad that a liberal girl with a female emancipation song won. Just like this year in Serbia, where right-wingers were upset about Bresvica not winning, it was all over the comment sections, there was a call to protest the vote, and do you know how many people showed up? Only 3 or something. And then, when it got exposed as online trolling rather than real life, the hate messages that Teya Dora received became significantly less until they disappeared. Maybe it would have been better for Blanka if there was a protest organized against her participation because then, she wouldn't have received as much hatred and it would have stopped after only 10 people would have shown up. But still, just online or real life, actual eurofans or not, this needs to stop. Online harassment and cyberbullying should have no place in TH-cam or IG comment sections, especially not on videos of the official Eurovision account. Such comments should be reported immediately, and their content should be removed. Such accounts should be banned, and maybe the police should be investigating. And if Blanka (okay, probably she's not receiving those DMs anymore) received threateningly DMs (or any artist), then she should report them to her local authorities. And people, students and adults, should be sensitivised on this topic and learn that you shouldn't write hate comments. That chick won over a guy who wants his girlfriend to cook for him and do the laundry? How about congratulating her, while saying you would have preferred that guy? You identified with the guy in 2nd place because he's just like you? Or that you don't agree with her worldview and Solo's message, but you wish her the best? Or that you would have preferred song XYZ, or how about writing nothing at all? And no insults, no engaging in personalities, no conspiracy theories, etc.

Need some new specs there, Sally. Interesting she mentioned she was to be in Bucks Fizz; so was Stephen Fisher at one point. Jay Aston and Bobby Gubby ended up there and had quite a career under Andy Hill and Nicola Martin. Noted about Cheryl and Sally winning Song for Europe twice. Don't think people over here will ever get Eurovision until the US sends a band; we can claim Kansas-born Katrina Leskanich, whose Waves won in 1997. But it's much different now.

Another great video, thank you. Your chat with Alesia was a joy to watch. Congrats on your awards, they are so deserved. Really looking forward to the 2025 season. It's not the right time now, but at some stage i would love you to go back to previous decades, 50s onwards, exploring and exposing the political dramas of the time. It feels like it's never been done before on TH-cam. I'm an older viewer, watched my first contest back in 1969 and seriously, I've watched European history unfold in front of my eyes - dictatorships fall, the iron curtain and the awareness of diversity across a very divided continent. There is so much content here that is never discussed. Please, Eurovision did NOT start in 2000

@@euroversepodcast Thank you for the thumbs up. ESC pre-2000 is just SO ignored in the reactor world, yet it is incredibly important to understand how the contest has impacted on European socio-political history and events. You touched on the Portugal coup earlier, that is just one example. As a British kid growing up in the 60s 70s I watched Europe evolve in front of my eyes. As a gay man I watched the approval and rejection of content that showed a reflection of myself on screen, and how ESC, early 80s, was the route to find a chosen family for that "gay christmas" celebration that gay viewers always talk about. This needs discusion!

Just a slight correction about the Portuguese revolution: It wasn't completely bloodless. 4 people were killed while protesting outside the PIDE headquarters (censorship and political police) after the main coup was sucessful. Someone from inside the building shot at the people protesting outside. Now, the Revolution (25 de Abril) is often referred to as bloodless because the transition of power didn't involve death, but the families of these people still complain about that notion (rightfully so)

It was sort of funny to see the guest's reactions to Molitva and Even If. Haha! I clearly remember many people around me and on the media at the time talking about how it was "finally a year when the actual songwriting and vocal quality determined the winner"-neighbourly voting was, of course, also present and obvious to people paying attention, but Molitva seemed to be broadly accepted as a deserved winner. Apparently, this opinion was not shared by the British media-among others possibly. Haha! As for Even If, knowing the context of the contest and the era, it was unfortunately kind of expected for it to not do well. That does not mean that it isn't a nice song; many nice songs don't do well. The guest told us the he was not familiar with the contest, so everything was to be expected, of course. No long-time follower of the contest would find a Balkan power ballad weird to the least. Hahaha! PS. As always, kudos for hosting this great podcast.

Apologies, but when the Israeli government pays for flashy adverts at Times Square and post adverts in the Jewish media to ask that that people vote for Israel regardless of whether or not they have watched the contest. That is quite explicitly the most political intervention into voting in the history of ESC, far exceeding the Franco interference of 1968. A government spending huge amounts of money to try to gain votes is against all the ethics of the contest.

16:50 I am a native Czech who recently discovered Eurovision, and I think I know the origins of the light-switch voting myth. In the 80’s in Czechoslovakia, there was really a TV show which used this voting method. The show was called “Rozpaky kuchaře Svatopluka” (Hesitations of cook Svatopluk) and basically, it was an interactive TV series where each 20 minutes during each episode, the broadcasting was paused and TV viewers could vote how the plot would continue. The story of the TV series focused on a career of young cook Svatopluk and when he got into complicated situation and hesitated what to do, the TV viewers decided the situation for him by the voting (e.g., after he had disagreed with his boss multiple times, the viewers voted whether he should leave the job or stay). The TV viewers really voted by turning their light-switches on or off and TV obtained the results by measuring the consumption of electricity. However, this show had nothing to do with Intervision Song Contest.

I think this young man shows the reason why young people can not or should not be elected to a role of leadership in a society. He is on one hand saying it is a difficult situation and yet he then gives a definitive answer to the problem. I agree with him that no nation involved in a military conflict should be allowed to enter Eurovision , but that means Ukraine should not be included next year either, as has been the case since 2022 with Russia and Belarus. Also this is a song contest and on one hand he says that politics has no place here, and then the other says that the EBU should use politics to decide who enters and what they can do. The Keffiyeh is not just a piece of clothing, It has been used by groups in many nations as a part of the uniform to show they are fighting in conflicts, and the only reason he is wearing one is to make sure everyone knows who he sides with. If a German entry was to wear the swastika on stage then all kinds of hell would break lose. When he said the EBU have handled this issue incompetently he is correct. The current EBU structure lacks leadership and they are the ones allowing politics to takeover the event. The reason Eurovision has lost its appeal to a lot of casual viewers is similar to the Oscars. You have just about every entry droning on about one issue or another instead of just singing and creating the performance. Until that happens Melodifestvallen and San Remo will start to gain ground, as they are just about the music and nothing else, no social issues, no political issues and no signs of prejudice or bias.

Didn't object to Russia, didn't object to Ukraine, didn't object to Azerbaijan, didn't object to Armenia, didn't object to Cyprus. Why be so hypocritical? Why are you giving a platform to this fascist? Same thing with Stig Karlsen, how can he say "the aim is to unite people" and then immediately demand to exclude certain people and for nothing they can't even control? As you said at 19:00, it's not tricky, Israelis do not deserve the same rights as other people (assuming they are even human in the first place) so we should have special stricter rules just for them that don't apply to anyone else. That's what your guests have been saying all along, that it only matters if it's to exclude Israel. Even the bomb threats were justified.

UK is also participating in bombing houthies. This will be a very difficult path to follow. EBU already have a rule about non political lyrics, which they clearly do not follow. Eurovision is political and economical Lots of countries are not participating because it's too expensive Why is it like that? Why is EBU Not trying to help and include more countries?

So a country that participated in the eurovision since 1973, won.4 time (and had multiple wars since then) can't participate anymore because...you are suddenly butthurt about this century long conflict? Meanwhile, Palestine is only recognised by a third of the eu. You only care because it's trending right now, and in 2021, and in 2019, 2014 etc. Anytime we have a conflict. Anytime the PALESTINIAN SIDE ATTACKS ISRAELIS, not the other way around, you stand with them. You suddenly don't care for innocent lives, suddenly, its - one for all! Go for it! Erase the zionists! 100 years from now people will apologise to the jews AGAIN for opressing them and disregarding the deaths of their people and the danger they are in. You only care about numbers when one side is using all of its money to protect itself while the other side is using it for attacking only. You white guilted, fake pacifists.

Is anyone even aware of Hamas Fatah and Islamic Jihad throwing gays and trans of roof tops? Do you understand that by supporting hamas you sentence all LBGTQ palestinians to death? Support Israel, support sanity. P.S. 70% of Palestinians support them, and you cheer and you fake cry for them

I am like Daniela…Luso-American. I moved to Portugal several years ago. We have some amazing Fado singers still…Carminho, Ana Moura, Cristina Branco, and especially Mariza! Daniela, let’s not give the American political answer. Not agreeing with what is going on in the world? When a massacre is going on, we can’t all just watch Eurovision and forget it. Music is inherently political and unifying at the same time. So, responses to performers is really a response to that country, not the performer. The performers need to know that they will be responded to based on their country’s behavior in the world. It’s just the way it is. Also, when Eurovision says it isn’t political, we all know that is a flat out lie. They made it even more political but how they decided to be inconsistent in banning a country but not others.
