Transforming MPC’s 1/63 X-Wing into a Shelf-Ready Masterpiece!
What’s up, Plastic Addicts? Welcome to Jason’s Space Dock-your home for Sci-Fi Modeling Masterpieces!
Today, we’re taking on the MPC 1/63 X-Wing Starfighter, built as part of a User-Generated Content campaign for the Autoworld Store. You might recognize this model from their recent ads-though if you’re wondering about the voiceover, that’s not me! They swapped mine for an AI voice, which, let’s just say, has its pros and cons.

Build Review: 10:38
Final Thoughts: 12:21
This build stays true to the kit: no lighting, no modifications, just straight out of the box. While this approach is a bit different from my usual projects, it offered a great opportunity to highlight what the kit has to offer-and the quirks to watch out for!
Before diving into the assembly, we’ll explore the fascinating history of the X-Wing studio model. Designed by Ralph McQuarrie, Colin Cantwell, and Joe Johnston, and brought to life by ILM, the X-Wing became a symbol of rebellion both in the Star Wars universe and in pop culture. The original studio models were intricate masterpieces, built for dynamic filming and packed with lighting, motors, and detailed craftsmanship.
The Build Process
This kit comes with the usual reputation of older MPC models, but I was pleasantly surprised. Despite its age, there was minimal flash, and the parts fit better than expected. However, there were still some hiccups:
Misalignments: The fuselage had a noticeable step near the cockpit.
S-Foil Issues: The mechanism for opening and closing the wings doesn’t naturally align, requiring manual adjustment each time.
Instruction Errors: A small misstep with unclear instructions led me to install the wing assembly upside down-but hey, it was a fixable mistake, and that’s the key takeaway I want to share: don’t let the fear of mistakes hold you back.
Painting and Weathering
Painting was simple and forgiving, and the decals were easy to apply. While weathering isn’t required, I added it to capture the on-screen look of the X-Wing and to demonstrate how basic techniques can transform a build. It’s not perfect, but it gives the model character and depth.
Final Thoughts
For beginners, this kit is a great starting point. The build is straightforward, the instructions (mostly) get the job done, and it’s an approachable way to get into model building. That said, the price is steep, especially here in Canada at around $50 CAD. For a 40-year-old kit aimed at newcomers, it’s not the most budget-friendly option.

I'm preparing to start this kit and absolutely love the base you used. I checked their website and there is a section for bases, but no real bases listed. Any idea on if they plan on producing more of them? I'll ask them as well, I just thought I would ask while I'm on here. Great build by the way, really enjoyed the video!
I had picked up two of the older MPC X-Wings, I guess around 1/40 scale(?) a few years ago. Turned out they had been started, BADLY, and cut up for some questionable detailing. I'm fighting through some dark thoughts as I try to put them right...
love this kit...can't wait to build it...
The panels are a bit tricky...but you'll love how well it goers together.
Great vid. Ive just found you channel and my fave ship too. New sub!
Thanks for the sub and I'm glad you enoyed the video!
There are three widely known curses: 1.Opening King Tut's tomb, 2. Starring in a "Poltergeist" film, and 3. Installing a TIE front window wrong! It shouldn't be oriented like a stop sign...
Up until very recently I didn't do Star Wars models, so I'm not as expert in them as Star Trek ships.
Turned out great! Nice build!
WAY better than I expected!
I had that X-Wing back in tne early 80's in a ROTJ set with the TIE Interceptor, B-Wing and A-Wing
I actually just put together one of those MPC B-Wing's
Great job, and great video
Thank you very much!
"solar panels" _slams desk_ radiators!!
I went by Wookipedia, that lists them a solar panels...
Will be looking forward to these being available!
They're actually available now. 24.95 (plus shipping) CAD. send me an email or DM with your email and mailing address and I'll send a paypal invoice.
What caused the renaming? It's a great name, btw!
When it was Jason's Model Shop people kept asking where my store was...
Aaaaaawwww so beautiful
Thank you
Whenever I see a kit is snap together, I automatically drill out the receivers. You can never get a flush fit and it's easier to separate the parts for adjustment. And no, I've never seen a good figure in a MPC kit ( the Snow Speeder figures were horrendous). The kit turned out fantastic!!! First time watching a video of yours. You did an excellent job and your pacing was spot on. I appreciated your encouraging words on the outro, and the humor along the way.
Thank you. This is probably the best comment I've ever recived!
Model railroaders have been living these lighting considerations for multiple decades with signals, streetlights, structure lights, on their layouts.
This turned is out beautiful ✨✨
Thank you 👏
This is so exciting. I cant wait to couple this with an Aztecask set. Good work man
I’m snoring 😴
Is this your thing? No content of your own but bring negativity to others? Why? What compels you to be rude when saying nothing is free?
Perfectly done. Awesome weathering. This brings the ship to life. The decals to apply would be a pain in the ass for me. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! I wanted to show the simplest/easiest weathering can achieve decent results.
9:32 We have no idea in Star Wars Legends (The Expanded Universe) from any technical manual what those tubes are. They are literally unlabelled in all SW media. The most convincing argument I've heard is that they are alarm lights.
Works for me! 😄
Take pictures of the sides?
There should be some on Jason's Space Dock Instagram.
really turned out nice...you'd never know it's such an old mold of this ship...
No warpage, the flash wasn't excessive. I was pleasantly surprised.
Just started building this now, thanks for the many useful tips!!!!!
It's well enough designed that it, generally, goes together very easily. But, if you're like me and you get in a rush, the panel spokes can be a real headache.
hah tie everything together
I can, occasionally, be Punny!
Sorry but the Bandai 1/72nd model is more detailed and much crisper.
Bandai doesn't make anything like this. Their Tie Fighter is tiny in comparison. Also, this kit from Round2 is actually pretty darned nice. I'm in the process of building one, and I can tell you right now that anything from Bandai or Revell would have a tough time being 'better', they'd just be different.
I'm sorry to disagree, but I have a 1/72 Bandai Tie Fighter. Though it's EXCELLENT, given the small scale it isn't actually more detailed/crisper. However, i it is EXCEPTIONAL for the small scale. And, if Bandai ever made a larger scale one, I'm sure the 1/32 Studio Series one would pale in comparison.
That was added for the fiber optic version. It’s used to hold a bulb to feed the fibers into for lighting the windows. The bottom saucer has those same pegs near the phaser
Nice catch!
Nice video, but.... This is the worse X-Wing Model Kit ever made.
You're not wrong. That'ss why I opted to focus on steps to make it look as good as possible. And it looks great on a shelf lol!
😎👍Very cool and very nicely greatly well done on a job very wonderfully and fabulously beautifully well done indeed Sir!👌.
Thanks for checking out the vid. It turned out WAY better than I expected.
Nice work Jason. You really transformed that old model , on a nice thing . I had this model in 1980 , but , being a kid , didnt had the skill to do a good job , and the model was lost , Today I would look at this model as a nice challenge , with a lot of new skills , and online help; :P
I didn't expect it turn out as well as it did. But going into it with lowered expectation may have made it a better build?
Great video, Jason. The only thing that I don`t like about this kit is that Round2 should've put more effort into adding more details, especially the fact that the pilot of the X-Wing is molded in the cockpit. Not like the 1/72 scale Bandai version has more details compared to the MPC. To me, Round2 is treating the model like it's cutting corners. Other than that, great work on the model.
I think it was a calculated decision, like the 537 refit. They know the kits aren't great BUT there's a huge amount of nostalgia for them, even with the defects...also it was a way to get star wars models out without having any new tool developed yet. Now, if they don't update the 1/43 x-wing tool (or even develop a new one), then you kinda know they don't really care.
Love your genuine content. All the best for the new year! 🎉
Thank you so much (for watching AND commenting)
Love this. I took the same journey with the same kit last spring and after weathering and details it turned out fantastic.
If your expectations are reasonable this can make a very nice little shelf model.
That turned out great, Jason! You did a ton better than I did back when I built mine (to be fair, I knew nothing then, but still). Nice work!
If I never did a Vulcan Shuttle, that I weathered, I'd never have had the skill/confidence to tackle this.
Back in the late 70s I built the Estes model rocket version of this. 1 flight and never saw it again. I was so bummed about that. It took me 2 weeks to make it as screen accurate as possible. by the way it was the D engine variant. for somebody like myself that has Parkinsons would this be a good model or would you recommend something in a larger scale?
That's why I never got into rocketry. The risk of it flying away to parts unknown was too great for me! Without know the progression of your Parkinsons and mobility/fine motor skills it's hard to accurately answer. However, I'd say larger just because it's more forgiving and easier to make spot repairs if you end up with paint or weathering you're not happy with? Revell made a 1/29 scale one, I just ordered one from a guy on Ebay
@@JasonsSpaceDock LATE STAGE 2. I have trouble sometimes even using my computer mouse.
That turned out looking great, especially with the weathering. I'm holding out hope someone will release a 1/32 scale x-wing to go with the 1/32 tie fighters that have been released.
There is a 1/29 X Wing from Revell. I just found one on Ebay. I also picked up a 1/48 Fine Molds.
What Flesh tone did you use for the Pilot The Pilot is from MPC space plastic Army men Toy line
@@georgemartinez1720 None, I just painted the face mask clear yellow
Very nice work Jason.
Thanks KCon! It's not ideal but it builds up well enough for a little shelf model.
That's a real beauty! Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching (and commenting)!
What a droning voice. If you need to sleep put this on.

I know you have interesting things to say, problem is I always have a problem hearing you. I don't have this problem when listening to other YT vids....so pretty sure it's on your end. Sound is muffled and low. Maybe that mic you are using?
Thanks for letting me know about the audio, I'll have to look into it.
