I Bounced My Cat Off The Moon (With Radio)
Humans first contacted the moon days after World War II; Project Diana gave birth to radar astronomy by bouncing radio waves off the moon to receive a signal back. I went to the Project Diana Site to recreate it, with a slight twist…

This Violin Could Replace Humans, But Won’t
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Music is, fundamentally, human expression. But The Murtogh D. Guinness Collection of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata at the Morris Museum in Morriston, NJ has over 750 machines that play music on their own - no human necessary. Will self-playing instruments replace human performers? Probably not, but perhaps there's value in making the definition of "music" more encompassing - even ...
What I Got Wrong About America's Oldest Roadside Attraction
มุมมอง 2.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In the seaside town of Margate, NJ just south of Atlantic City, Lucy the Elephant stands as America’s oldest roadside attraction. Why have people preserved a giant wooden elephant for 140 years? The answer, if there is one, has less to do with Lucy's storied past than it does with ourselves. VERY SPECIAL THANKS: Thanks to everyone at Lucy The Elephant for allowing me to make and share this! The Most Radioactive Place In New York Can Fix Your Car

The most radioactive place in New York City is a car repair shop. Why that is and its role in nuclear weapons development is unsettling. Why Steam Rises From The Ground In New York Movie Scenes

Movies set in New York City always seem to have steam seeping up through manhole covers. Turns out, there's a reason that trope exists: New York City is home to the largest steam system in the world! I've lived here my whole life and never knew why steam rises from the ground, or what those orange and white cylinders that pop up around the city are, until researching this video! Brooklyn's Deadliest Fire Was Lost To Time: The Brooklyn Theater Fire of 1876

The Brooklyn Theater Fire of 1876 was the deadliest fire in Brooklyn’s history - but even people who grew up in Brooklyn don’t know about it. The Shakespeare Enthusiast Who Introduced An Invasive Species

The European Starling is an invasive species with a history of causing problems. According to lore, Eugene Schieffelin, Chair of the American Acclimatization Society, brought Starlings to America because of his love for Shakespeare and all the birds mentioned in Shakespeare's works. The Archaic Law New Yorkers Broke For 37 Days

Why US Milk Could Last Longer, But Doesn't
มุมมอง 7K4 ปีที่แล้ว
For 51 years, the City of New York required a mysterious second “sell-by” date on milk cartons. It seemingly disappeared in 2010, after decades of refinements to the pasteurisation process allowed milk to withstand distribution in the city. These days, pasteurisation is so advanced, milk sold in some parts of the world is shelf-stable, and will last for months. Despite that, the majority of mil...

I was on a Jane's Walk in Green-Wood a few weeks ago and passed the monument and was like WHAT? WHAT is this? So I googled and was shocked and suprised to learn about this fire and it's location, so central to my life, I went to HS in Downtown and my first job was at 16 Court Street, literally across the street. Now I know, I do tours and speak about the Park Slope Plane crash which most people have never heard of. Thank you for this thoughtful and informative video, I will certainly let my guests know about this as we pass through Brooklyn Heights!

    • @stargazer7644
      @stargazer7644 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Generally you need about 100,000 watts effective radiated power to hear your own echoes on 1296 MHz. That sounds like a lot, but because dish antennas have a lot of gain (ability to focus power in a tight beam) the radio doesn't need as much power. 100 watts into a 10 to12 foot home TVRO dish gets you 100,000 W EIRP. TLM-18 is a 60 foot dish and that TS-2000X radio outputs 10W. Assuming all 10W makes it up to the feed, that gives an EIRP of 308,000W.

For a first World country, this is pretty odd to hear. Box milk IMO actually tastes better. It's very common in my country (3rd world) and having been consuming it for years. There is one flaw with Box milk and that is you can't make evaporated milk with it per se. You can only use fresh milk and I assume this is because of the UHT process. Interesting video, I'm glad we have best before dates by law. One thing less to go wrong.

I tell this story to my biology and environmental science students to begin my lecture on invasive species and linking it to Schieffelin's reputed love of Shakespeare makes a great hook. It's also the story that opens the episode of PBS's "Human Footprint" about invasive species, so I'm not alone. It even shows up in Netflix's "Ozark," just to give an idea of its cultural significance. While I've been familiar with the story, having read it in Reader's Digest more than 50 years ago, you managed to add details to it I hadn't heard, so, thank you, I learned something from you. It's always a good day when I learn something new.

So this is radio and not an electromagnetic wave? Radio waves need a vibration. Space is a vacuum,is empty -there is no way for sound waves to move through space. In 1949 they must have used electromagnetic waves. On the way to the moon you have to pass through the VAN ALLEN BELTS. Electromagnetic waves in the lower band of the Van Allen Belts create sound due to the plasma. Known as the Whistler Mode Chorus Frequency. (radio waves could not travel through this) Why was this sound not picked up on forward and return journey?

You have so much good stuff going on I can't believe the simplest thing is what might make the most difference. Focus on speaking more clearly and slowly. You smash and slur a lot of words that makes understanding you harder than it should be. It sounds like you're rushing, and it shouldn't. Separate your words. Try to enunciate. Your content is cool. Do it justice. I just want to help.

Another very well researched and interesting video! In the midwest US, one of the dollar store chains sells shelf-stable milk, and I used to buy it because I used milk infrequently but liked having it around in case I wanted it, but I don't think that product is available nationwide, and I've never seen it in a conventional grocery store. And I wasn't aware of the NYC dates, that's very interesting too. You definitely have a talent for making interesting and eclectic videos! I know this one has been around for a while, but thanks!

Thank you for a video that was clearly carefully researched and well presented. Even ignoring those who have no interest in what we can learn from history, great celebrations and tragedies alike make the transition from today's news and important milestones in our lives to forgotten events of a distant past very quickly. I imagine that few people relish being forgotten, and it's good that you've honored the memories of all those who died in that awful catastrophe in this video. Public disasters, fires, building collapses, and such also form the foundation for modern safety measures, building codes, and government regulations that appear to be just bureaucratic red tape until you can put them in context, as responses to past tragedies. Thanks for presenting this video.

Thanks for doing all the research I would have had to do ... if you had not already done it. I'm presently an EXPAT living and working in Germany and planning on coming back to the states in 2023. Can I find boxed, shelf milk in the US, well apparently not easily. The little bit of milk I use in my cereal in the morning as well as coffee just doesn't warrant buying large quantities of milk. Do I want to go to the store multiple times a month for milk, not if I don't have to. I remember several years ago when the dairy industry tried to sell the idea of shelf stable milk in the US. Those boxes showed up on the store shelves and stayed there. If they had done a better job of selling the idea it may have gained some traction but alas, it was not to be. Thanks again for the research and your time. I do hope that at some point America will wake up and learn that we don't exactly have all the answers. Until then, there is going to still be a lot of milk thrown in the garbage. tschüss
