  • Movies set in New York City always seem to have steam seeping up through manhole covers. Turns out, there's a reason that trope exists: New York City is home to the largest steam system in the world!
    I've lived here my whole life and never knew why steam rises from the ground, or what those orange and white cylinders that pop up around the city are, until researching this video!
    Some popular locations in New York City powered by steam: the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and Lincoln Center
    A note on the sound here: I didn't realise it until I got home, but my microphone clip fell off my shirt before I started recording. I've done my best to repair it, and added manuel subtitles to help with understanding!

    Summarising how a major city is powered in a 4 minute video may raise as many questions as it answers. Feel free to leave any questions comments, and I'll answer them as best I can!

      ah, that explains it :D I was about to leave a comment about how much your audio has improved! I would add as you establish your channel good audio mixing (and equipment) really sets the better channels apart (even over higher end video)...otherwise really enjoying your content!

      Yeah, I felt (and still feel) awful about the publishing a video with this sound quality. I suppose one of the upsides of filming on location is that every location poses different challenges when it comes to sound. What I currently use is certainly decent, provided I avoid mishaps like this, between now and when I can invest in state-of-the-art equipment, I can’t help but always be learning! (And I certainly learnt my lesson here!)

      I’m glad I could! It’s always boggled my mind, as well, and I certainly didn’t expect there to be a rational explanation beyond “atmosphere”. On set, I’ve used dry ice for small things and smoke machines for larger scenes - those are really fun!

      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the format! When I decided I was going to make videos, this is what I just sort of gravitated to - I never set out to do what Tom does - but I've always wanted to see more educational content with people out in the world, close to what they're talking about and drawing attention to things that are already there.
      Tom does that exceptionally, so the fact that you saw parallels makes me feel like I'm doing something right!

    Oh, the manhole steam happens in denver sometimes, but rarely. Usually only when it rains in spring, but we do have a separated sewer system (still have bad leakage problems though) .
    Only weird think I remember from my afternoon in NYC was those weird pressurized gas canisters. Is there something that needs cooling?

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What colour were the pressurised gas canisters? I think I know what you mean, but I’m not sure - when I was filming this, I noticed so many different types of containers for water, steam, and gas around the city that I’d just never paid attention to!
      Interesting about Denver. Researching this, the other cities people tend to associate it with are Chicago and Detroit, although It likely happens anywhere there’s something hot under underground and ventilation above it. Having a separate sewer system is likely part of why it doesn’t happen as often: fewer opportunities for it come into contact with hot pipes!

    Hello! Bymissdarybennet here great and informative video! I actually thought it was a cinematic effect, nothing else, loved learning about how different this city works from.others or mine . I love the sound in background sounds very new york!

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I also thought it was only a cinematic effect because I never noticed the steam in the city; it’s so common, I didn’t pay attention to it until I actually went out looking. But once you notice it, you realise it’s everywhere!
      It’s also interesting that it’s different in your city!
      Glad the background noise actually added to it for you! That’s such a good point - even though I was on a relatively quiet street, you can still here the distinctive sounds of New York in the background!

      That was so frustrating! This is far from the first time I've experienced this with Cheddar. At this point, I should probably just send them my resume. Setting aside ideas because another creator made them first happens all the time - it's totally fine. But it hits differently when the idea gets made by a major news outlet with nearly unlimited resources. Nothing like the soul-crushing experience of watching a video, looking at the script you've spent weeks researching, and thinking, "At least they didn't talk about the - nevermind. Well I still have that section on - oh, they covered that too".
      At least in this case, I made it first!
