    I don't generally regret things, but I wish I'd written down the location of that tree in first grade!
    The NYC government put together an interactive map so you can see the location and type of every tree in New York City, and the Natural Areas Conservancy has an interactive map of all the the city's natural areas. Both are great, and are linked in the description!

    The more I watch of your videos the more I want to visit New York again. When I went last time I visited some of the big name spots like Central Park, Museum of Natural History, and St. Patrick's Cathedral and they were all amazing. I already wanted to return to the city but your channel is putting it higher on my travel list

      Thank you! That means so much; this city has always been such a special place to me, and I'm so glad I'm able to share it with you. This may sound strange coming from someone who lives here, but every time I read your comment I find myself nostalgic, daydreaming about simpler, pre-pandemic times. Thankfully, things seem to be trending for the best, and will hopefully continue to this time! The places you mentioned are some of my favourites, and I certainly hope you get to visit soon!
      Thanks again for your comment, and for your wonderful channel! I've always been fascinated with mythology (at one point, my roommate had to hide her mythology books from me because I'd read them instead of studying for my own exams!) and you always teach me something new!

      @@SarannaRotgard If I could heart comments on other videos I'd wanna heart this one cuz it just brought a huge smile to my face. I'm glad to hear that you like my channel and I can teach you new stuff despite you already loving myths for a long time!
      And I get that feeling of being nostalgic/day dreaming of pre-covid times. I do the same thing when I think about my college campus. I remember all the people bustling about getting to class or grabbing lunch and when Spring arrives everybody's outside either talking or playing catch. I miss how lively the world used to be. I don't wanna dwell on pre-covid times too much so I'm just gonna look forward to post-covid times and hopefully pretty early on into those time I'll be in NYC!

    Urban forestry is something I wish would get more attention! I did an urban small study in grad school in the city where my university was. One unexpected thing that I found was that the street trees in that city had both higher species diversity and a higher proportion of native species than in nearby forests which were not managed as intensely.

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s so interesting! It’s not something I would expect at all, especially as someone who grew up on the East Coast. One thing I notice whenever I’m in Los Angeles is the diversity of the trees within the city - it’s like anything can grow there! Here in NYC, I wonder if the same principle holds true. You’ve inspired me to dig into the map of city trees and compare them to native species!

    • @MrJonnyk000
      @MrJonnyk000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SarannaRotgard When I started my project I was just walking around with a notebook and recording the species, height, and diameter of every tree that I came across. Lots of walking! But eventually I learned that the borough actually employed an official urban forester who was willing to give me massive amounts of data. You might be able to find something similar!

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Jon Klein That is some serious dedication and attention to detail! It must have been a massive undertaking, but it's such a fascinating topic to look into! It's encouraging that they employed an official urban forester. Making this video taught me just how important trees are to city life and the consequences of not taking them into consideration, which still seems to be a major problem particularly in low-income areas.
      And there is something similar here! It wasn't entirely relevant to this particular video so I had to leave it out, but NYC has an interactive map of every single street tree! It's the coolest thing; I just checked, and I'm able to see the exact species of all the trees on my block! - tree-map.nycgovparks.org/ According to the "data" section, about 1/3 of the information was collected by volunteers who walked throughout the city doing just what you did. - www.nycgovparks.org/trees/treescount
      Now that you've brought my attention to it, I'm going to reach out to the organisers about possibly making a video on it, because it's an amazing accomplishment! I wish more people knew about it.

    One problem we are having in the loss of urban green space is the loss of elm trees to the Dutch Elm disease and the Ash trees to the Emerald Ash Borer. Many of our city street side trees in Indiana are these popular shade trees.

    You need to train your breath and excitement. It kind of sounds like you are to excited to speak :)
    But really nice video and a fascinating topic. I live in a city with a lot of trees and even though they aren't considered a forest they stil improve the overall air quality by a huge factor compared to other german citys.
    Also, the fact that you planted a tree in first grade doesn't help to narrow down your age :D
    Thank you for your videos and improving the quality

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, and I'm continuing to work on that. It's a skill! This is something that will continue to improve!
      My original script included specific dates, but I realised people could use them to infer my exact age, so I generalised a bit. :)
      One thing I wish I had time to address in the video was the difference between Urban Forests in the US and around the world. I came across a paper in my research that hastily concluded some European cities surrounded by tree-dense terrain don't get as drastic a benefit as a place like Manhattan, which is essentially landfill in the middle of the ocean, but they still get some benefit. I'd imagine Hamburg would see a more pronounced effect than, say, Stuttgart, although that's just an inference based on observation so don't quote me on it!
      I'm glad you found the topic interesting, and as always, thank you for watching!

    • @Gulliolm
      @Gulliolm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SarannaRotgard Maybe you should slow down about 15%. That would give you some time to breathe :)
      Good idea to disguise your age to the internet. Its a dark dark place :D
      I could link you up to a renowned forest scientist with a deep understanding of european forests. He is also a youtuber but his videos are mostly in german.
      Hamburg has another effect that changes the city climate: Strong winds from the north sea. We rarely have no wind as there is always a light breeze. That and one of the densest tree population (is that even the right word for trees?) is why Hamburg is not as warm as for example Berlin (not as many trees) or Stuttgart (in a basin/valley and also in the center of the european landmass). Makes it the best city to live in in Germany :D

    Denver looks like a forest compared to the great plains around it. But yes, trees make everything better

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting! I've always imagined Denver as surrounded by tree-dense terrain, which is an assumption from pop culture and always living in coastal cities, I suppose. But that might change soon: I'm planning a trip out west to make some videos, and Colorado is high on my list as I narrow down where I'll find some interesting topics to cover!

    • @BrandonPooley
      @BrandonPooley 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SarannaRotgard Ah, there's only one film set here afaik, and it was okay. One of the nicknames for Denver is 'the Queen City of the Plains', and it shows. I was surprised to see everything east of the Missouri is pretty much a forest, you get used to the place in which you grow up I guess. Side effect, I'm confounded by large bodies of water.
      If you're looking for any info on places out here, God knows I've scoured maps for anything of note. I can give you a list of a few places you might find interesting for any state nearby. LMK

    This is a really beautiful spot. Anyone know where it is?

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure! It's the Prospect Park Ravine. It's a bit hidden - the closest entrance is on 9th Street/Prospect Park West in Park Slope. Across the road and across the meadows, there's an entrance to a gated-off section of the park. Pretty much right after you walk in, on your left, there's another entrance to a gated-off section. That's the turn you want to take! It's like being instantly transported into the forest!
      The official park website isn't particularly helpful - this one is a bit better! www.nycgo.com/venues/prospect-park-ravine/
