Why I Can't Show You The Widest Canal

  • Cape Cod Canal in Massachusetts holds the title of “Widest Canal” in The Guinness Book of World Records. But is it, really? The widest canal ever known to humankind is a bit further away than you might think…
    THANKS/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
    -Many thanks to the Cour of Engineers at the Cape Cod Canal for allowing me to make this!
    -Additional footage by Ash, who made this video possible by driving me around, somehow putting up with my need to get one perfect take with the patience of a saint, and providing necessary food and sanity.
    -There's an easter egg in this video. If it gets around to the person whose work it references: there's no hiding certain similarities between the intended premise for this video and the video I've referred to. I made it to poke fun at myself for being unable to produce something of comparable scope and relevance, despite my best efforts. Any other similarities to that, or any other, video are coincidental. (Except for the "I could have flown across the world" bit. I couldn't have pulled that off, either.)
    ➡️➡️Why I can't afford to continue this channel and 4 (free!) ways you can help⬅️⬅️
    -What's going on?
    When I started this channel, I knew it was an investment I wouldn't necessarily see a return on. Passion is worth that, sometimes. But many of my videos (this one included) consumed far, far more resources than I'd allocated. Personal circumstances combined with unforeseen disruptions in filming have now caused enough videos to fail that I've depleted my long-term budget. In short: things go wrong and ideas fall through.
    -Why don't you just switch to a different format?
    For the type of content I make, whether or not an idea works often hinges on "place". I don't film on location for the pretty backdrop; the places I go to are necessary teaching points. They facilitate the story and, most crucially, serve as the key anecdote I teach through to make a much larger point. If I'm working with an institution, I often have to visit more than once: first for research, then to film.
    Could I make low-budget videos? Yes, and I have - but they're not what is going to sustain this channel. "Unqualified person talking in front of a wall" style videos won't be fun for me to make - and most importantly, won't be fun for you to watch. While voiceover and stock footage videos have their place, it's not my place. I make this style of content partly because it plays to my strengths, but mostly because it's the type of content I find most engaging and I genuinely believe there needs to be more of it in the world. Making occasional concessions is normal and necessary, but that's not what I want to bring to this platform and you'll lose interest quickly.
    -Why haven't you started a Patreon?
    I don't feel I've earned it. Although I have ideas for content exclusive to patrons, putting information behind a paywall goes against what I believe in. If I do start a Patreon, I first need to feel secure in knowing what I'm sharing here, as well as the additional content there, provide you with actual, literal value.
    ➡️➡️How can I help?⬅️⬅️
    ✅ Subscribe with notifications on. Subscriber count shouldn't matter, but it does establish a certain credibility when I reach out to institutions/location managers. That expands the scope of what I can make, including projects that are local.
    ✅ Share these videos with people who may enjoy them! I cover a wide range of topics; if you know someone with whom a particular video resonates, pass it along!
    ✅ Share these videos on relevant platforms! This is huge. I've gotten opportunities to create because people heard of my channel through Reddit. I don't typically use it or other websites/servers where videos get posted to relevant audiences, so I don't know what's out there. If you know of a place to post a video to people who want to watch it, by all means, please do!
    ✅ Engage! Watch, like, comment: all of the cliche things creators ask you to do. They may or may not appease the algorithm, but doing them is more likely to than not doing them.

    *UPDATE! I realise not posting anything new after saying I may never be able to post anything new looks like I’ll... never post anything new. That’s not the case! More is on the way, and soon!
    Weekly uploads should resume later this week! I apologise for this slight delay - everything I’d researched and planned to film is covered in snow. Please stick with me! I have some projects coming to this channel over the next few months that I’m excited to share with you!*
    As excited as I am to finally share this, I've been holding off because, as of now, I can no longer afford to make this type of content. If this is something you’d like to see more of, pull down the description for some (free!) ways you can help!
    One way to help me continue this channel is by subscribing, which you can do here: th-cam.com/users/sarannarotgard

      Tom's work was a huge inspiration for me in starting this channel! His type of content is what I enjoy watching. I wanted there to be more of it in the world so I decided to make it myself. His channel continues to inspire me to work hard and make meaningful things. Your comment means a lot to me. :)

      @@robertford1960 Wow, I am genuinely at a loss for words. I couldn’t even justify putting myself in the same category as Tom! I will always have the deepest respect for his work. From one longtime viewer to another: although I’ll have to disagree on that point, I respect it and am deeply moved that you would come to that conclusion.
      That said, it would be wonderful to have more subscribers so I can reach a wider audience - and perhaps get an occasional email beginning with “I have a jet pack...” (Genuinely, the reason I hope this platform grows is so that if I do make things people might find meaningful in some way, it actually reaches them! It would also give me more opportunities to make meaningful things. Thank you for saying this channel deserves more subscribers. It means a lot and is extremely encouraging!)

      Thank you. Your comment just made me, and will continue to make me, smile - and I haven't genuinely smiled in a long time. :) With the giant disclaimer of "It wasn't at all intentional", I do think the world benefits from videos like Tom's, so if people feel there are similarities (and it seems like they do), then maybe I'm doing something right.
      A funny little behind the scenes thing: when my friend sent me the photo of the canal, my first thought was, "There's no way they'd let me film that! That's a video Tom Scott would make!" Jokes on me - they let me film it, but the Suez Canal had officially been declared the widest canal on Earth in 2015. If only I'd gotten there 5 years earlier!

    It always frustrates me when misinformation takes hold, I tried the search and you're right.
    This problem is really prevalent in psychology and can become quite dangerous. Even more annoying than that, often the studies that disprove 'popular' studies dont get anywhere near enough attention to show up in searches because it's just not as clickable for the general reader which leads to problematic commonly held beliefs about mental health etc. it sucks
    Anyways! Great video as per, you're so so good at this, I really hope you keep creating and I'll do everything I can to support your channel. If you ever need help with anything please let me know!

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It makes me so happy you tried the search! I had a bunch of people test it out and so far, no one's found a combination of terms that works.
      I hadn't thought about this before you mentioned it, but it's disturbing that the studies that get buried by search engines because they're uninteresting to the general reader at least got published. So many important studies that aren't profitable in the academic community either don't get published or never get funding in the first place. I'm sure there are other biases involved: prestige, notoriety - the problem shapes the beliefs and values of academia. This goes all the way to the source.
      Thank you so much. Your encouragement and support are genuinely uplifting. Now feels like the time for me to stop making things, but just knowing they're appreciated is pushing me to find a way to keep going!

    Suez canal: Doubles width to accommodate large modern cargo ships
    Large Modern Cargo Ship: Hold me beer for 6 days, 3 hours and 38 minutes.

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a deep appreciation for your specificity. (Really - I was curious whether or not that's how long the ship was stuck so I just looked it up, and... yeah!)
      I'm sure there were reasons for this, although I could't find them and they're not relevant to this video, so none of this made the final script: yes, the Suez Canal doubled in width, but... it also sort of didn't? They built a parallel lane that was approximately the same width as the original canal alongside some of the length of the original canal, but it's separated by land. So, there can be 2-way traffic, but it's not like now there's a body of water that's double the wide of the original. This has always caused minor problems, but well, as we saw, it can cause major problems, too. (It also looked like the ship was stuck in a relatively narrow part of one of the lanes.)
      My original instinct upon finding out the Suez Canal is wider than the Cape Cod Canal was "disprove it!" but there's not enough available data for the entire length of the Suez, which is why this useless information will forever exist in my brain.

      I would think "widest canal" is only on the list of "Important Topics To Get Right" for people with very, very large ships. So, not a lot of people. It would be interesting to try this with a mainstream topic that people frequently search for. Misinformation about actually important things has a way of sticking around on the internet, and my guess is that's driven more by human beings than an algorithm. An experiment for another day!

    Brilliantly made. Reminds me of Tom Scott, like everyone else here it seems. Also this suddenly becomes so relevant a vid with the width of Suez Canal letting it down just a few days ago. Uncanny how you predicted the importance of the width of a canal lol. Cheers!

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I still find it so amusing that this became relevant! After finding out this wasn't the widest canal I'd tried several ways to make the video work, and the most obvious one to me at the time was "justify it's the most consistently wide canal" which - may actually be true? I'm not sure, because parts of the Suez canal do seem to be quite narrow, but those exact numbers, as far as I can tell, do not exist publicly anywhere. I'd spent WEEKS trying to derive them myself, comparing maps from different decades and images from space in until one day I looked at all these printouts and thought, "Why am I don't this? Even if I prove this, it's not like the width of the Suez Canal could ever possibly relevant!" I was very wrong.
      I had to cut this from the video since it wasn't entirely relevant: the interesting thing about the with of the Suez is that it didn't actually double in the 2015 expansion project in most places; they built a parallel lane so there could be 2-way traffic at all times. I'm sure there was a perfectly good reason for it, but one thing I came across in my research is that it causes many delays and, well, as we all saw: certain sections of it could probably benefit from being wider! (It still is a really impressive feat of engineering, though!)

      That certainly does seem to be the consensus, doesn't it? I'll never _not_ feel flattered by it because Tom's work absolutely brings good into this world, although I also just looked over this comment section and I'm starting to think this may be something I'll have to address at some point, ideally not in an official-looking document, "For legal reasons..."
      What's so strange is how unintentional it is! When I watch my stuff back after not looking at it for a while... I guess I see it? Maybe? This is certainly no different to things I did when I was younger, before I knew Tom existed.
      So, thank you! That means a lot to me and makes me feel like I'm making nice things, and on the right track to potentially doing some good. I'm also mildly concerned. But I'll stick with the good for now! :)

    Good luck with everything! Hope you manage to get to a place where you can afford to keep making videos, but no shame if you can't. Thank you for your words of encouragement! It does take a lot of energy, time, and money to make videos - especially videos like this one, where I had to get permission and travel. About 3 months of planning went into arranging this, but getting to make it was worth the wait!
      I find that the writing process consumes most of my energy (and time), so I have a lot of respect for what you're doing and can imagine it's very hard work!

    I always find it confusing that English has two words "canal" and "channel" that sounds really similar, has the same etymology and translate to the one word in my native Norwegian: "kanal". No wonder "canali" was "mistranslated" as canali means both channels and canals.

    Hah, commercial travel to Mars. Somehow I don't see that being a thing even when it is possible, at best a yearlong round trip exposing people to a ton of radiation is....a hard sell. But who knows?
    Um...canals in Colorado. Well, the first irrigation system in Denver was this thing called the highline canal, which was a huge wooden aqueduct that brought water from the hogback around the platte river plain to the city core in order to make a separate clean flow of water for drinking and washing ore. Since they moved both the platte river and cherry creek a few hundred yards over the course of gold mining, it made the water undrinkable. Now the 80 mile long thing is a bike path, with very little of the structure still intact.
    I was disappointed not to see anymore ducks

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm disappointed about the ducks, too! That bridge behind me is a railroad bridge that can be raised and lowered. When I got there (and was greeted by ducks!) the bridge was down, which apparently is an uncommon occurrence. I filmed the bridge while they were raising it, and when I turned around the ducks were gone! The moving bridge scared them away.
      Denver's first irrigation system seems really innovative! That's the sort of thing I would love to make a video on if I had the means. Maybe someday! An interesting parallel: we also have a "highline" in NYC, but it was built on the tracks of a long-gone elevated subway line.
      I looked into travelling to Mars (to make sure I wasn't saying anything incorrect, not to plan a vacation) and it seems like the people who want it to be a thing REALLY want it to be a thing in the near future and are convinced it will be. I'm not so convinced, but as you said: who knows?

      @@SarannaRotgard its so weird i found you from Curious Tangents and you're putting down his videos

    • @SarannaRotgard
      @SarannaRotgard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not putting them down at all! Travis has the unique ability to work with concepts and ideas in a concrete way. That’s something I lack; I am more comfortable teaching when there’s something that illustrates the concept I’m talking about. I have deep respect for the way he teaches; he is certainly not “unqualified!”
      For context, I should say I got the phrase “unqualified person talking in front of a green screen” from a creator who uses it in a way that’s pointed inwards: this person feels unqualified to talk in front of a green screen in the majority of their videos, as do I. It’s not to make the blanket judgment that everyone who makes that content is unqualified. And I wouldn’t put Travis’ videos in that category to begin with: he works supporting imagery into his videos expertly, but they don’t rely on that imagery. As for videos that are entirely stock footage and voiceover, as I said in the description, they have their place, but it’s not MY place.
      I want to make it clear that Curious Tangents is a channel I have long watched, enjoying, and looked up to. For further context, I suggest you read the “Why don’t you just switch to a different format” section of this video’s description if you haven’t already, and if you’d like me to further clarify please feel free to email me so I can show you where I picked up that phrase and the context it was used in there/is used in here.
      I’m glad you brought this up, because it’s something I would never, ever want people to think. It’s important to address it.

      It’s so interesting that you mentioned that - when I do trip over words, it’s usually because I switch between dialects in life a lot depending on who I’m talking to. When there’s just a camera... things can get mixed up! But! The reason that happens in the first place is because I studied phonetics for years. I’ve honestly been wanting to bring that to this channel in some way since the start, but, as I’m sure you can see from the comments on this video, starting up a series on even a niche part of linguistics... probably isn’t great for appearances. (If I can find a way to do it in an entirely different format, then at some point, definitely! I just have to figure that out...)

      That does absolutely seem frustrating, but it's awesome that you speak more than one language! I wish I could do more than pronounce them!
      A lot of what I've studied/taught is working out how to apply phonetic principles that work equally well in English as they do in any other language - that's what they're designed to do! I've found they work particularly well in romance languages, so they may be helpful, or at the very least fun for you to learn! I take back what I said about "bad for appearances" - I'm going to need some sort of series, and I may very well try this one out and see how it goes!
