Hollywood goes for the money. The real question is: why are people so uncomfortable with sincerity, depth, drama and love and tenderness that they need to hide under the silly fat joke

I absolutely never watch marvel shot for many years. I loved how humour was dark, and how there was joy and sadness and real emotional moments as well as long awaited action confrontations. Today it’s all goofy and without any weight. I didn’t enjoy this as a kid and I don’t enjoy it as an old ass adult

It's a shame that people think "Hollywood" is all that cinema and film have to offer. Bet no one has been to an art house or time in to small channels for Premieres.

I know this may be a very unpopular opinion. But shouldn’t we maybe just stop considering Marvel and DC comics as an adult matter? My point is not to get dismissive here. Marvel and DC comics are great. But they are (very well) primarily tailored for children and teens. Maybe the problem lies in the attempt to make them fit to the expectations of an adult audience… to the expectations of an audience that maybe shouldn’t even have this sort of unfair expectations from what was primarily tailored as a fantasy universe for kids. Maybe should we accept, as an audience, to just grow up, and move on to other cultural goods that better match our expectations as adults.

I would also give the credit/blame for it to Robert Downey Jr. himself I think it’s well documented that he improvised much of his dialogue especially in the first movie which was almost more of a student project film than anything with how they got funding from so many different places and were writing the script as they went along. The first Iron Man was a HUGE success it gets overshadowed by the dark knight but that movie still made $585 million and adjusted for inflation it made $857 million. In literally any other year other than that one that would’ve been the biggest superhero movie of the year. I think once Disney bought marvel studios they saw the success of iron man and just used downeys performance and mannerisms as the new template for all of it’s character not understanding that Tony Stark in the movies is portrayed as a know it all rich boy who believes he’s the smartest man in the room at all times so it makes sense that he doesn’t take things seriously cause he thinks he can outsmart everyone and get his way out of anything. As we know Hollywood follows whatever the money goes to so they saw that be successful and as a result we now have this era of movies where everyone is a variant of tony stark😂 Also if you go back and watch Iron man 1 the quips are EXTREMELY tame compared to now, the movie literally starts with an ambush on a military convoy where everyone is killed and tony is held captive by a terrorist organization, i think people forget that the tone of that movie was much more serious especially the 3rd act

i always wondered why this style of humor felt fine in guardians of the galaxy, yet i hated it in a lot of other movies. now i finally know why. but yeah honestly the biggest issue is just that theyre doing it way too much. its fine to use this style of humor if it fits the movie (like if its supposed to be a parody for example), and/or if you're doing it at the right times, but just putting it in everything all the time regardless of whether it actually fits or not sucks. stop being afraid of sincerity, its boring. especially if youre just gonna reuse the same joke over and over. also, i dont know if this is related or not, but ive been seeing the same kinda thing on the internet. people seem to be becoming more and more afraid to be sincere and instead make jokes similar to this

The internet, I think, has really poisoned the well when it comes to ANY form of sincerity. Like, people are afraid to say what they really feel about things at risk of being called “cringe”, or “goofy ahh bruh”, or “mid”. It also feels like the minute you try anything different, your film is labelled “Oscar Bait”.

This quality of writing is like something you would see on the Disney channel. This is exactly the way blockbusters do “sincerity” nowadays when they try to do it at all

even the mcu type humour when used solely for humour purpsoes is fine, it's just that it depends on what kind of movie you're using it in. if you want to make movie where you're cutting the tension every 2 minutes with a joke, then that's fine. but then don't make a serious movie. like ALL the mcu movies do this but at the same time they're trying to pay off stakes like everyone in the universe just died and it's so tonally dissonant that it just doesn't work. even in infinity war and endgame they had moments they were trying to cut the tension with jokes WHILE fighting and it's like... dude can you be serious right now. the stakes LITERALLY could not be higher can you maybe take this seriously. if the characters aren't invested in the danger they're in, why should i be?

Way back in the early 90s the film ‘The Mask’ had a scene where one of the police officers says something like ‘nobody moves, nobody gets hurt’ but then follows it up (after a brief pause) with ‘I’ve always wanted to say that’. It was the first time I’d noticed insincerity in film, and at the time I thought it was the writers excusing themselves from being accused of cliche.

CS Lewis called this out over 50 years ago - the rise of what he called scoffers, people who use flippancy as a means to pretend to make a joke. These people don’t realize that they are not making a joke, but just acting insincerely as a means to be popular among one’s equally insincere peers. I see it everywhere, from my job to film, book, and TV criticism. Ultimately, it’s a defense mechanism against truth and goodness.

its a byproduct of movies hyperfocusing on appealing to sad 30 year old millenials with disposable income. All these nostalgia drunk manchildren grew up in the nineties, an Era where the prevailing cultural attitude was "its lame to care about things". So all their media has to be caked in this annoying veneer of irony because they're still afraid of being seen genuinely liking or being invested in something.

I love your video, you said it how it is and didn't overstate it. People blame James Gunn for this humor but I think it's those poor imitators that people are annoyed with. Gunn's strength is taking an abstract silly D-list superhero character and making the audience genuinely care about them as a person.

It seems like people are collectively fatigued on big budget blockbusters in general. It's hard for them to feel sincere when all of the formulas have run their course. We've seen the realistic, dark and gritty superhero in Nolan's batman but that eventually got old, Same now with the snarky, sardonic Marvel and Disney movies. I think most people these days are completely desensitized by massive budget filmmaking and stale, regurgitated IP. Hollywood needs to bring back original storytelling and innovative and creative practical effects over CGI.

Over a decade ago I remember watching a Nostalgia Critic review about Hook, my single favorite Robin Williams film. At the time, I remembered having to agree and say "yeah, this IS a pretty corny film... But I still love it to death". Little did I know that same video's over reliance on snark would become the ENTIRE culture around movies during the next decade. Nothing is allowed to be earnest anymore. Nothing is allowed to be "cliche". "Cliches" themselves have become so over-discussed that bringing up cliches as a criticism has, itself, become cliche. I mean, can ANYONE actually point at and identify what Avatar 1 or 2 did that was so wrong? Because that movie (and its sequel), unlike Hook, is pretty universally hated despite just being a good oldschool cultural exchange story. You've probably heard the accusation "It's JUST Pocahontas but with aliens"... Or maybe you have heard it compared to Ferngully... Or Dances with Wolves... Or any number of stories with this exact same setup. People keep SAYING that thinking it's a criticism without realizing they are just attacking a TYPE of story: the Starcrossed Lovers setup. It's like a Coming Of Age stories or anything else, it isn't a cliche, it is a TYPE of narrative and it has existed since before Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet. It exists because people LIKE it and despite all the hate a lot of people still love Avatar and for good reason. "But no", they say, "It's BAD. You're not allowed to like it!". You can say that wasn't the sentiment, but you would be lying to my face as if every Avatar fan hasn't been attacked for the simple crime of enjoying the movie. It was OVERWHELMING in how present it was. No matter what mental gymnastics you can muster, whatever superficial thing Avatar may or may not have done wrong DID NOT warrant OVER A DECADE OF PEOPLE WHINING AND COMPLAINING ABOUT IT. But hey, that is how STRONGLY people supposedly hated any form of contemporary story... While lapping up the objectively garbage Avengers Endgame and starting entire online campaigns to get it to beat Avatar's box office numbers as if Avatar fans cared about that to begin with. An MCU property... Yeah, we wrapped right back around to the focal point of the video, fancy that. Because if Avatar was indicative of everything these media illiterate neanderthals didn't want to see in movies, the MCU was indicative of everything those sincere stories got replaced with. And I'm sorry, but I'd rather watch a legitimately engaging action packed movie where I get to go to another world and IMMERSE myself in it than listen to the Avengers make "witty" one liners about how bizarre and silly every serious situation is. And I'll always stan Hook for that same reason. Is it dated? Yeah. Is it hokey and corny? Yeah. Is it also one of the most touching and heart felt movies I have ever had the joy of experiencing again and again to remind me what is actually important in life without compromising its sincere message with lame, low effort cynicism? Yeah.

"What passes for hip cynical transcendence of sentiment is really some kind of fear of being really human, since to be really human [...] is probably to be unavoidably sentimental and naïve and goo-prone and generally pathetic. " - David Foster Wallace The internet is to be blamed here as well with how its sense of humor influences the meta narratives of television shows and movies. We've reached a point where we're more concerned of being self-aware, cynical, and ironic than being genuine and earnest with our thoughts and intentions.

What's funny is that Ethan Hunt follows up with a subtle hilarious wink-type reaction to Benji's monologue that doesn't take the tone of the moment away entirely, but just enough to move on from it. It feels very genuine
