The Player Core 2 Investigator - Improved Class Features and Skill Stratagem with Character Builds
It's time to revisit my Investigator builds and see how they shake out with the updates in Player Core 2. Specifically, we're going to see how the brand new sub-feature of Devise a Stratagem, the Skill Stratagem, plays with the various build options. What can an investigator do when they can't land a strike? Are they stuck like they used to be or does the Skill Stratagem save them?
This is a follow up to my previous Investigator builds video: th-cam.com/video/a4LdIr51t90/w-d-xo.html
And also to my video on Investigator updates in Player Core 2: th-cam.com/video/-RipTFf-Kvc/w-d-xo.html

Alright adventurers, do you remember those alchemist builds we looked at a few months ago? Well here they are updated for Player Core 2. Though I may think the wording of the new rules needs a bit of work, there's no denying the mechanics are VASTLY improved. Each subclass is now totally viable and should be exciting and rewarding to play. Let's take a look at those now!

Investigators Get Some Huge Upgrades in Player Core 2!

The Investigator has been one of the more popular Pathfinder 2e classes over the years, but it did suffer some mechanical problems and left a bit of room for improvement. It's a really fair question and it's come up a few times, so I might make a video on this one day. But for now, I think it comes down to a few things: (1) A fair amount of the flavor text of the class and subclasses feels like old westerns, so it puts you in the mindset of firearms over crossbows. (2) Paizo created many more interesting firearm weapons than they did crossbows. Looking on Archives of Nethys I see 44 firearms and 8 crossbows. (3) Firearms tend to have the fatal trait so they deal a ton of damage on crits. As a gunslinger with expert proficiency, you'll crit often and rolling that huge damage feels great. Surprisingly though, the crossbows actually tend to have slightly higher average damage, but it's not quite as exciting as the big ups and downs of a firearm.

I agree. Investigator methodologies should interact with its core chassis more. like a Swashbuckler plays with Panache, Investigators should get different effects on their strategems depending on their methodology. The methodologies feel like mini archetypes that add flavor but not enough to mechanically support the core Investigator.

As a GM, I typically ask my players to stay away from investigator. A failing on my part in that I don't know a good way to keep the character "in the know" without causing everyone to meta the whole plot. Not sure that I have the energy to navigate that with everything else either. I like the class from a player perspective, but it seems like a lot of work on the GM

I have a question for the alchemists in general.. What's to stop someone from adding Versatile Vial's formula to your book and thus use it for advanced alchemy???? Or by taking Versatile Vial as a lvl 1 formula thus adding it to Advanced Alchemy... Thus increasing your total number of Versatile Vials at the expense of a formula slot while leveling. So, having 6 of your Advanced Alchemy items be Versatile Vials as well as having your "per day" max vial pool.??. Like, because what's to stop me from getting the Versatile Vial formula and crafting them during downtime??? Do non-alchemist have a cap on how many Versatile Vials they can create if the V.v's are a craftable item?? Appreciate any answers 🫠

So. 12:52 Just on Chirurgeon. Is there a built in timeout? Battle medicine has a once per day or hour. And even treat Wounds has a 1 hour timeout, then a 10 minute timeout. Kineticist has infinity heals but, a specific ally can only benefit from the fruit once per x minutes. Healing Hands? Champion... Has a finite Focus Pool. This is bekievabky an Acrobatic Athlete. A tumbler and climber and jumper and climber. Perhaps a bit of an aerialist. All of that, translates into the idea you mentioned, of using climb and tunbke, athletics and Acrobatics, To seek advantageous position in combat, And whenever possible, be up and out of the melee skrum on the ground, raining bombs down upon the enemy every turn. Especially with Infinity Bombs, functioning much more like infinity Cantrips, Or a Quiver filled with arrows, This is a Ranged concept that seems to have longevity. Very nice. 18:37 It's important to note that even if it goes back to stage 1 the Fatigued condition sticks around according to Damage and Conditions of Afflictions (PC p.430). 19:17 "When do you use that poison?" Keep in mind that your Create Consumable poisons can be used to poison your allies' weapons up to 10 minutes beforehand. Useful if you expect combat within the next 10. I'd advise application on the group's primary weapons, as those poisons stick around on a miss (unlike ammunition, which is lost on a miss). 20:15 "Your infused poisons can *affect* creatures immune to poison." *This is not fluff text.* It is a specific beating general on Immunity (PC p.408), wherein immunity to poison prevents being affected by the poison's effects. This is directly relevant to 20:40 - your poisons do still debuff even if they are immune to poison.

this is correct, but the ambiguity of "Versatile Vials" within Quick Alchemy and Field Vials does make it somewhat unclear. a Mutagenist does need to spend an action to drink a Versatile Vial to suppress the drawbacks of a mutagen, but because that's an ability granted to the subclass via Field Vials, you can use Quick Alchemy Quick Vials for that action

I haven't seen the sorcerer since the PC2 came out. I'm hoping their Blood magic got some buffing. I will add another difference between them. A Wizard is a better caster to play in a group with a stingy GM or a party that doesn't use consumables enough. Having a "wait a moment/day" attitude toward your magic means you can really take care of most problems given enough time. Sorcerers have to rely on their consumables more to answer those unusual challenges that are outside their repertoire. If the GM doesn't hand out consumables (low magic, thinks they are "too powerful") or the players sell/don't use them, then a Wizard has more player agency to respond to those unusual circumstances. A week of infiltration and diplomacy encounters might leave a combat heavy Sorcerer at a loss to contribute without access to scrolls and staves. The wizard can just likely swap their preparations. They should also take different approaches to Staves. It's my opinion that Wizards should look to staves for repeatability. They prioritize a magic staff that gives them several spells they want to cast more than once per day. Sure strike is great in a staff for a wizard with Attack spells, so is Force Barrage. Sorcerers on the other hand want staves that will give them more toolbox answers. Maybe damage types outside of their specialty, solution effects like Sound Body, Rank 2 Water Walk, or even themes on multiple staves (mentalist, fire, water) so that they can rotate their repertoire similar to a Wizard. A Staff of Fire is basically wasted on an Elemental Fire or Diabolic Sorcerer. It's better used by an Elemental Water or Fey Sorcerer to have more options.

I'm gonna talk bad at flurry ranger here for a moment: The subclass is perhaps the most action-intensive feature in the game and unless you're built to make more than 2 attack trait actions a turn and your party can help facilitate that, you're probably better off playing a fighter. However, on paper thrown weapon flurry ranger with +3 str and +4 dex at character creation is nuts. Quick draw on a flaming thrower's bandolier while hasted. (We'll assume 8th level) Chakram, Starknife, Starknife, Hunted Shot two shurikens. 2d8+1d6+6->[2d4+1d6+6]x2 with deadly trait->[2d4+1d6+6]x2 Assuming all strikes hit and none crit that averages out to 49 weapon damage and 17 fire a round. Critting on the starknives or chakram will also add a hefty chunk of damage too. 5 strikes per round at a target within 40 feet with an attack penalty that caps out at -4 with each hit getting full strength mod to damage? Great. Bonus points if one of your allies can put down difficult terrain under your prey so they're off guard to your flurry.

I'm a monk main, so I can understand the pitfall of thinking all your turns will be move, stance, flurry. In practice, this can be the case. However, I actually really like that monk has no subclasses to choose from, just feats. This allows players to really come up with their own unique fighting styles rather than be boxed into preexisting motifs. There are more than enough stances (with potentially more on the way) that you can pick one and stick with it, or switch them up. Fuse Stance now being available at level 16 is a huge buff! Qi spells, monastic weaponry, archery and stances all open up routes so no two monk players have the same build!

45:01 Just for the record... Gunslinger is designed to function with Xbiws as well. Further... I'm not a real fan of the mechanics of the firearms in PF2, as representative of our firearms... How ere, mechanically firearms are not disproportionate or inherently flawed... Mechanically, the firearms in PF2 seem fairly well balanced, and if anything offer some advanced weaponry options. Similar to other advanced or uncommon weapons. As DM my solution was to simply reflavor the firearms x so that they are not in fact analogues of our world, But rather just magic/tekk from the Golarion realm. Crystal power cells... Bolt launchers, Magic powered weapons... Whatever it takes to find a suitable narrative for your campaign. Remember also that we did have alien civs crash land advanced tekk, like lasers, So knockoff reverse engineered firearms, Is a pretty awesome pivot. With that adjustment, I like the Gunslinger.

“How can you not like explosions?”. Sir, your adopted ancestry (goblin) is showing.

Guilty as charged. I would say it's easily one of my top 3 ancestries.

The replacement of alignment damage with spirit damage has delivered a huge boost to divine casters including sorcerer and oracle. Once people start to understand what a big deal this is, I think clerics will become more popular.

So the primary takeaway from this video is that every time Rebelthenking releases a class ranking video, we all need to remind him to change his socks!

The joke's on you. We're seeing some above average temperatures so I'm not even wearing socks 😄
