Another great one. It’s interesting to see different workflows.
Nice to hear a review that has such good information AND such tasteful demo improvisations ! Great work :) As rewarding as those instruments look to play, they are VERY expensive for something that isn't quite good enough to sit in recordings unless it is concert with something else. If they could just hold up a bit better in the real world it would be amazing, but I think we're not quite there yet. Coupla revisions down the line though - these could be incredible, and a viable replacement for those 100 GB libraries !
Holy shit my guy. This is why I love this channel so much. Not only do I find your advice super useful, but you are also an amazing composer. Not every teaching channel is like this. Some may talk a lot and give their opinion, but many or most lack the skill to back it up. Thanks for sharing your music!
Ah cheers! I’m glad it’s useful 😊
Amazing! Please do more of these kind of videos. This is very inspiring for a beginner. You have a talent for education.
Good stuff Vince!
Very disappointing it doesn't work with Track Stacks.
Finally someone else that uses this killer show/hide group feature! I only use track stacks for drum/percussion kits. Also, I use numbers 1-9 without modifier keys for quicker flow. Thx for the video I learned a trick or two as well!!!
Super useful stuff. Thanks for sharing
23:10. Agreed. It's a good library but I still find it a fiddle. I know their philosophy on this but the latency can get in the way. I find the Classic version a little easier to use. Excellent series, Vince.
Just catching up, Vince. Thumbs up on the 'sketching patch' technique. I seem to recall that CSS consider the marcato patch to be a sort of quasi performance patch but it lacks the biting attack of the short/long combo. Excellent burst of frenetic playing in there :).
Thanks! This workflow thing for me has been a recent point of experimentation for me so this video is on point! I use hide empty tracks but hadn't though of the hide/show groups rather than having to blast open ALLL the groups to grab the other instrument per your example. Good call!
I guess the most we can do for this extremely valuable content other than liking and subscribing is to write a nice comment: THANK YOU!
Awh thanks!
Oooo only a few minutes in but this is gold. Thank you ♥️
Glad to hear it!
Great content!
Nice episode!
Would you consider the combination of keeping all the notes on the grid and applying tempo changes (tempo track) too restrictive in your workflow?
Not necessarily, it totally depends on the musical context and time constraints. I just prefer to have a particular reason for doing it, it’s not a hard rule or anything 👍
gorgeous man
bro you're really ignoring the incredible marcato patch in the css library
It’s good! I just don’t use it as my go to as I find the vibrato very intense and I like having more nuanced control
@ interesting Stack you do with the shorts over the sustains. I do like how you have control over the level of the shorts.
where do you get that breath controller?
www.tecontrol.se/products/usb-midi-breath-bite-controller-2 good piece of kit!
Well dude you can play…period
Beautiful beautiful
The breath bite midi controller was new to me, what a great idea! it is outside my budget limits ATM but definitely something to add to my wish-list. Thanks for sharing your method!
Really cool video Vince!
Thank you for your great videos. The solo blending in the first part of your video is very informative! I use to do that with the Joshua Bell’s on top, which also ends nicely blended. Keep your great job! 🙂
Playing fast lines requires low latency. I use a weighted Arturia 88 key interface that coupled with even minimum latency makes performing fast lines feel sluggish. Can you share what audio interface you are using? Is it connected to a hub or directly to your computer? I have a super fast computer with 96 gb of RAM and an incredibly fast hard drive, but now I’m trying to identify a new interface-
@@michaelrasbury ASIO FTW
@ what is FTW?
@ for the win! 😂
@ haha ok
@@michaelrasbury if your audio interface is the one that came with your motherboard, you should try ASIO4ALL drivers for your MIDI input. You should achieve reasonable latency
Great video 👌 Concerning your Logic theme, I’d like to know too😅 looks like a protools skin… did you use LP colorizer ???
Yes LPX colorizer, it's a custom skin made by a friend of mine. Shoot me an email and I can share it! hello@vincewebb.com
Amazing video Vince! =) I like the darker theme of your Logic project, and the more highlighted transport and measure numbers. How did you change it into this?
Hey Mike! Have messaged you on discord 👍
To my ear is that players often sound way too accurate and co-ordinated? Does it have a humanise control (ie for detune, start time, end time, etc)?
Agreed. The update has a player accuracy knob but it doesn’t make that big an impact on the core sound imo
For this kind of material I would use the matcato patch in CSS, there's a specific reason you prefer to use a combination of sustains and shorts?
Hi, yes the vibrato on the marcato is particularly intense
Just discovered your excellent channel (thanks to the vagaries of the YT algorithm). Loving the content - really speaking my musical language. With special reference to using a breath controller, I feel duty-bound to mention the exceptional SwarPlug4 VSTi from Swar VST. This is a wholly Indian-developed set of traditional Indian instruments and percussion for VSTi. Crucially - and this cannot, imo, be over-emphasized - it contains the absolute best Bansuri Indian bamboo flute I have ever come across in virtual instrument form. This is a thing of real beauty (talk about 'the sound of India') - and it was developed specifically with excellent breath control (although it also performs admirably and convincingly without). I'm gonna go out on a limb and assert SwarPlug4 is one of the very best VSTi's I have ever risked a purchase on. SwarPlug4 comes with a multitude of traditional Indian instruments (plucked, bowed, blown, etc), many featuring breath control support. Also a ton of percussion - all the beautiful Indian drums one might ever need). All are very high quality and invite the player to dig down and wrestle with technique. Many example loops (in MIDI form) are provided with expression intact - mostly traditional ragas for illustrative purposes. The software has a massive library of traditional scales for correct regional tunings, etc. But the Bansuri - this is the absolute star of the show for me. Hauntingly evocative (with a tasteful reverb applied - all instruments are supplied 'dry' by default) - and worth every penny of my investment. I haven't yet purchased a breath controller (Swar has some demo videos of the Bansuri being used with a BC, btw) but I am keen to do so shortly - specifically for this library. Anyone making ambient, cinematic, 'fourth world', or even traditional orchestral music might discover in SwarPlug4 a rich, diverse, high-quality library of amazing possibilities.
Welcome to the channel! Thanks for the recommendation, I hadn't come across Swarplug before. Happy composing!
You have given me the freedom to stop fiddling! I typically obsess over the articulations endlessly. Thank you!
haha! Good to hear. Yes it's so easy to get lost getting the correct artics to trigger but totally losing sight of the big picture. I still make this mistake from time to time!
Tuning. Tuning. Tuning. 12 tone equal tempered strings will never sound like real strings because real string players always "dynamically" retune their melodies and chords. They actually don't play within the constraints of strict cold 12 tone equal temperament imposed by machines.
100%. As much as I enjoy tinkering with virtual instruments there's no substitute for the real thing!
Great tip on combining the long and short patches for sketching. I normally sketch using either the SA Solo strings "Total Performance" patch or Virharmonic's Bohemenian Violin for that. But, obviously the down fall is that they're both solo strings and not sections, so it can be an extra step or not entirely representative of the sound I want to achieve. Thanks, mate.
Glad it was useful. Yes there's always a danger when using any sketching patch that you forget your original intention regarding the sound. Sometimes it's better to use something that's deliberately nothing like the intended sound (e.g. piano or a really rubbish sample) just to remind yourself that it's placeholder and force you to engage your imagination again.
do you sell midi for strings arrangement? I would purchase them!!!
I don't! But thanks for your interest.
good tuff Vince! How exactly are you splitting the midi data between both cc 1 and cc11? Is that only available with the TEC controller that has bite and breath? Or are you setting it up in the DAW? Im not seeing that option with my BC (no bite).
Hey David, I use a modifier in Logic to transform incoming CC11 to CC1 and then select 'thru'. The CC11 is 1:1 with the CC1. This technique isn't for everyone but I personally prefer working with just one expression curve.
Hi Vince! Great video. I very much enjoy watching your videos while coding my own tracks down. Makes time pass a lot quicker. :)
Lovely to hear, sounds cosy!
gratitude for this video, could you pass me information about the midi controller with the breath? genius
Hi Martin it's the tec control breath and bite 2 www.tecontrol.se/products/usb-midi-breath-bite-controller-2
Cheers Vince! First time on your channel and instantly subscribed. Very nice peek at your composing process. I'm very fond of this no-nonsense approach. Thanks again and looking forward to more of your videos!
Thanks very much for the sub! Glad it was useful.
Thank you very much for sharing your approach! It makes me rethink how I could improve my workflow when it comes to mockups. I'm learning how to do mockups and the struggle is real haha What would be your go to library for small ensemble or soloist? Great video Vince! can't wait for part 2!!
Hey! Glad to hear you enjoyed the video! My go to Chambers strings right now, is probably sample modelling ensemble strings, but they lack a little bit of grit, so I would blend that with the cremona strings from native instruments. For more soloistic, solo string parts, I tend to gravitate towards the swam series.
Awesome! I'm going to give them a listen. Thank you so much for the reply!
Sir.. what is that midi gadget that helps you to "blow" midi parms?
Tec control Breath and Bite 2! www.tecontrol.se/products/usb-midi-breath-bite-controller-2
Very helpful video, thanks. Everyone of us has its own workflow, when it comes to the dynamics. What I noticed is, that you give the instruments a basic dynamics shape with the breath controller. But afterwards you adjust these values. I am doing the opposite. I record every instrument "flat", without any dynamic changes and draw afterwards my bezier curves for the modulation and expression. I can also recommend Art Conductor for an easy way to set the right articulations. But of course, everyone can do that in the way, which works best.
Hi, thanks for the comment. I've tried this way of working too as well as using articulation sets but for me this one just feels more fun. As you say everyone is different!
very nice, thank you for the guide 😁

Nice demonstration! I assign vibrato to tilting my head to the right or lifting my head. This gives me a more controlled sound than biting.
Nice 👍
Brother planning to get new native instruments complete edition to start with composing music Any recommendations?? On vst
Hi! Thanks for watching. I don’t have Komplete but I own some of the instruments in it and it seems like a a good value for money if you’re just starting out. For orchestral sounds - if I could have just one set it would be the cinematic studio series (strings, brass woodwinds) for percussion I like spitfire percussion. These ones sound the most realistic overall to me- but they require a bit of work to use and are expensive. My tip would be to cover your bases with the best sounding samples you can afford and then invest a good amount of time learning how to use them effectively. Musio and east west composer cloud are also good options. (Is probably lean towards musio) Usually it isn’t the library but how you use it that makes the biggest difference! Good luck!
@ thank you sir for the reply
Great stuff, I've been starting with notes and automating back, but building it in looks much more immediate.
