Update | Unintentional hiatus because I'm a terrible writer
I haven’t written since my last video, basically. I’ve spent all this time struggling and trying to claw my way back to creativity. So many people say they “don’t believe in writer’s block,” but it’s the only thing I can think to call it.
I’m hoping to push through it though. Sorry for being gone!

    Hi, I usually don't comment on videos, but I wanted to reach out and say that I'm a writer who has decided not to publish as well. I've found a lot of fulfillment in writing solely for myself and my friends, and I really hope that whether you choose to publish one day or not, you find that same fulfillment in this period where you aren't focused on it. Sometimes it's really nice to have that cleared out of your path. Best of wishes, Cove

    Imposter Syndrome will make think you're not a failure, but you're not. It sounds like life has your creative well running dry. Taking a break from your main project to work on something else or spend time doing things that make you happy will help you get back into the swing of things. We support you here regardless of it you achieve everything or fall short. Give yourself some credit and grace.

      Thank you so much! I always forget that I'm not the only person who deals with this. A lot of people only take to the internet to share their successes, but it's been eye-opening to see how many people can relate. I'm trying to remember that the writing community is really big and there's a lot of us in different stages of it, and all of us are here because we love writing. I'm ready to find my love for it again! Thanks again! 💖

    I'm really proud of you for the progress you made so far. I believe that hard work brings results. You'll also never know what result future hard work will bring. I believe you will be satisfied someday and it's ok to take breaks and say this is hard because it is. Work is hard and I think it's amazing that you have decided to keep doing it.

    Taking a step back isn’t giving up in fact I think in your time away from publishing you should write a short fan fiction for fun. You don’t even have to share it but I think that’s apart of the enjoyment for you so do it for fun and yea don’t think about it too much. I think then you might be able to go back to these other stories you’re working on. Good luck x

    I think you made a good choice. For right now. I think you do need to write without thinking about publication. That is clearly harming your love of writing. Just write for the joy of it (like you are doing). Then when your joy is replenished take the completed draft down and see if you can’t find joy in revising it with no thought towards publication. There are very few traditional or self published authors that are full time writers who depend on sales and royalties to support themselves. I think you need to separate the desire to publish from the dream of being a full time author. It seems like your dream is preventing you from seeing publication/self publication as an achievable goal.

    Honesty and transparency are often in short supply on the Internet. I love creating and writing, but I figured out several years ago that writing is a hobby that may or may not result in a published book. I have a day job that I love, and I worked hard to get where I am career-wise. Writing is what I do for enjoyment. I really want to share my writing with others, but if it takes a really long time to get to that point, I'm okay. It sounds like you are, too, and you should embrace that.

    • @aprilkayauthor
      @aprilkayauthor 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you!! I'm not sure why I was so attached to the idea of "I NEED to publish" because I have a good job that supports me, and I still have enough free time to pursue creative things, and I should really acknowledge how lucky and grateful I am to be in this position. And like you, writing used to be something I did for fun and because I just enjoyed the act of it, but ever since I became obsessed with publishing, it makes it hard to enjoy it like I used to. So I think you're so right! I need to get back to just doing it because I love it and have fun with it. If I publish, cool, if not, it's not the end of the world! Thanks again! 💖

    I am glad that you felt up to making an update video. Remeber you do what is best for you and when you need it. The story and book is only as good as you like it. You are your projects first fan and if it take a while for it to come out then that is the time it needs. The best thing I did was write Hunger's Desire as my write what ever the fuck I wanted project. It help me embrace that I do like writing sextual things and erotica and exploring all that has to offer. Also not holding myself to the rat race that trad pub can be and putting those projects down for now. I hope you doing this helps you find that joy again and remember that is what is important.

    Sorry you've been struggling with your writing. I've decided to shelve my current WIP too. I plan to look at a different story that I started a few years ago. Glad to hear that your pet is doing better. Vet care can be so expensive. Love your FNAF hoodie!!! You can always revisit the idea of publishing at a later date. I'm in my late 50's and just started my self-publishing journey. I don't know if I'll ever make money at it but I'm giving it my best attempt.

    • @aprilkayauthor
      @aprilkayauthor 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I used to never shelve projects, and I'm realizing now that that was probably to my detriment. I think we're being smart by making that choice, because no one's ever going to want to read something we forced ourselves to write. Thank you! I was fortunately able to put a lot of the vet expenses on a credit card so I can pay it off a little more slowly, but it really is so much. 😭 And double thank you! It was a gift from my brother and FNAF is one of those things that other people consider cringe but I'm gonna wear it with pride! 😂But I really appreciate it! It's so easy to get caught up in all the people who are fresh-faced and succeeding in their twenties that I forget it's never too late. All we can do is keep at our passion!

  • @mangaluver2010

    I was thinking of where you'd gone but I didn't want to intrude. I'm glad to hear that you're alright, and I'm glad your kitty is doing better. <3 But I just want to say, from one writer to another, these feelings don't make you a terrible writer, nor do they mean that you've failed as a writer. I think one of the things we need to get rid of, is the idea that not being published means you're not a real writer. The fact that you feel the NEED to write because it makes you first and foremost happy, means that you ARE a writer. I know we love the idea of making money from our passion and I blame hustle culture for that, but sometimes, the things we do for the joy of it, we don't have to make money from. I had to learn this for another hobby (crocheting) when there was a big boom in the craft and I felt I needed to use it to bring monetary value to my life, but the moment I tried, my work was terrible and I was instantly miserable. The moment I began making things just because I wanted to again was the moment that I found true joy in my craft. The reason I mention this is because I think it relates to your struggle as well. TikTok is the best and worst thing that could have happened to writers because, while I'm happy people are finding success, this idea that we only need to write to market I believe is harming so many people's creativity. Many writers don't think it, but readers can tell when your heart isn't in the work. This is all to say, write what you love and what calls to you, more than what you think will be popular. If you write something you love, then your audience will come to you. And if you choose to try and publish later, know it's always an option. As someone finishing a creative writing major, I've been in class with 60 and 70-year-olds, going back to school to follow their passion. Some are doing it just to say they did it, and others are doing it and getting the publishing deals they've always wanted. My point is, there is no rush or deadline to be a writer. Take your time. Enjoy the process. If it's meant to happen it will happen, and if it doesn't, you're STILL a writer. Thank you for your honesty and take care! <3

      Ugh, you're so right. I love the internet, but it's made it so easy to find people to compare yourself too--and like you said, hustle culture is definitely a big part of it. It does feel like sometimes I've forgotten that I can just be creative and do creative things for fun--I've played around with polymer clay and digital art and it's always in the back of my mind that I need to get good enough to make money, and that just ruins everything. I have to remember that it's okay to just create for the love of it--god knows that's how I got into writing in the first place. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words--and the reminder that writing isn't publishing. I don't have to write to publish, and I don't have to publish to be a writer. Thank you! 💖

    Oooh! I like that story beat list you were using from Nell Alexander. I'm going to have to check their work to find out more. I feel you on the watch later list. I tend to listen to videos rather than actively watch them while I'm working night shift by myself, but I've been listening to music the past couple of days instead, and my watch later list has grown to almost 100 videos because I've neglected it. lol I loved the new saga of EPIC: The Musical!!! I have created a whole playlist of all the sagas, and I keep listening to it on repeat. I thought I saw something about Dark being cancelled with a cliffhanger, so I haven't watched it yet... I don't need that kind of negativity in my life, but then you mentioned it having a bittersweet ending so now I'm questioning that. I want to see it still. It's on my wishlist, but I haven't started it yet. That said, I also haven't seen more than the first episode of Stranger Things. I don't watch a lot of TV honestly. Movies? Yes. TV? Not so much. I was so happy to hear that you didn't want to end your romance with pregnancy or children. I love romance, but you're absolutely right. They tend to end with lots of babies popping up everywhere, and while I am a mom and have no regrets, it would be nice to see more child-free couples in romance. Especially those who never wanted children in the first place keeping that mindset throughout the story. Congrats on finishing! It was awesome to follow along and see how it all worked and your process for it.

      @@SDHegyes I usually like to use Romancing the Beat from Gwen Hayes, but Nell’s is so much simpler and easier to work with sometimes. Lol yeah it’s rough sometimes! When I’m really busy with work, I tend to put on documentaries or video essays that I don’t have to pay too much attention to, so all the writing vlogs I want to watch have fallen to the back burner because I want to be able to pay more attention to them ugh. And like you said, sometimes I just want to listen to music instead-especially when EPIC exists! I’m so addicted! Oh weird! Everything I’ve heard is that Dark was planned for three seasons from the beginning, and the ending definitely feels definitive to me. There was another show though, 1899, I think it’s called from the same creators, and that got cancelled after season one. I haven’t watched it yet, I’m too scared it’ll be really good and leave me wanting lol. Yes! I feel like even when a story has people who don’t want children, it always ends with them changing their mind and realizing kids complete them actually, and I don’t hate children in the least, and for some characters, I’m happy to read that happy ending. But when it’s every single happy ending it’s just like, come on. Give us something new lol. Thank you SO much!! 💖

    Oh no the triple threat. Do I game, read, or write. Have totally been there. I liked that the Alien movie was more thriller then horror. I felt like the trailers were going in that direction which is why I went with the guys to see it. Omg me too girl I was trying to write a short story/novella in August and I didn't finish it either had to carry it over into September. I totally understand not wanting to end with the babylog. Though I don't think I have read many babylogs but always do what you want to do. I have only ended one story with a babylog.

    • @aprilkayauthor
      @aprilkayauthor หลายเดือนก่อน

      Whenever someone asks what my hobbies are, I'm always like, "oh, I'm boring, I don't have many hobbies," but then when it comes time to decide what to do with my free time, suddenly I have too many things I want to do lol. There's just not enough hours in the day! I think with some time away from Romulus, I like it a little more, but I still feel like something was just missing for me. 😩 The aesthetic and special effects and music were on point though! I think sometimes it makes sense for certain characters to end up having a baby in the epilogue, and I'm totally fine when that happens! Like if a character has already made it clear they want a married-with-children happy ending, or it's a big epiphany they have that makes sense for them, I'm fine with that. But sometimes, especially in shorter romances, it kind of just feels like the author didn't know how else to end it and got caught in that trap.

      @@aprilkayauthor100%! I’ll be here for whenever it is that your next video drops. In the meantime, I’ve returned to this one because I think you’ve inspired me to write my first romance-as a short romance, nonetheless. I’ve always been afraid of writing in the romance genre, because I’m ace, so I don’t know if I can write relatable, enjoyable romance stories. But truth be told, I have always been a sucker for romantic stories, and I do have my favorite tropes. It doesn’t matter that I’m ace. And beat cheat formulas exist for a reason. I’m writing a different short this month, in the fantasy genre, but as soon as I’m done with that project, I’m going to start planning this one. It’ll probably still be fantastic, but fantasy romance. 💕 Anyway, thanks for the inspiration!!
