      @RJ398, I don't no for sure, but I suspect it is the latch solenoid. What I suggest is that you purchase a product called Deoxit and spray the leaf switches which you will find underneath the number an letter switches when you raise the lid. Deoxit is the very best contact cleaner I have ever used an will remove all of the oxidation enabling the switches to work much better. You don't need very much and don't need to soak the switches just get them wet and then let it fully dry for an hour or two before using the machine, leaving it overnight would even be better. Hope this helps and good luck!

    thanks a lot for sharing this great idea! I was hesitant to "just" replace the fuse, because I was afraid it would just blow again and then you'd have to do all the soldering etc. again. Now I installed the external fuse holder and it works just fine, and I do have a couple of fuses spare in case another replacement is needed. The PCB board layout on the european version looks quite different, but I was able to figure out where the wires need to go.

    Hey, MT. Good video, with excellent descriptions on the details, yeah, it's a beauty there, eh? I'm a Commando guy but there are a couple of things that might apply for you. I had a problem with my Commando once -- the advance on the points locked up. It turns out that Lucas made some of the advance units with tapered threads. No big thing until someone is using the pointed advance unit pullers like you've got there, eh? With the bad batch of advance units, when you'd screw the puller tool in, it would go into the tapered internal threads and wedge the threads outwards enough for bulge the outer diameter of the inner shaft and jam against the slipping part (the part that's turned by the advance weights). If that happens, the advance is locked or at least stiff -- and this isn't good for your timing. It's hard to tell if this is happening by feel so the thing that fixes that is to screw the tool in until you feel the slightest tightness, then very lightly tap the head of the tool sideways. That will pop the taper loose. If your advance unit is OK, it won't hurt anything but if it's one of the bad ones, it will prevent the condition of locking up the advance*. Nice description of the wiring. A small point - the weight of the wires and connectors will be affected by vibration when the engine is running. This means that the wires (Black/yellow and Black/white) may have broken strands after a while and you'll either have a suddenly dead ignition or weird symptoms like misfiring. Two things an installer should do -- first -- use something like RTV or similar "removeable" adhesive to secure the connectors down on to the backplate; second, assure that the seal grommet is in place where the wires come through the engine case. Triumph assembled these motorcycles new with a plug seal in the cases -- they tend to perish with heat or one may just have been dislodged during service in the past. They're available from "Classic Triumph" parts dealers under part number -- (01.6065); if a bike has this seal missing, or if it's damaged or deteriorated, the wires can move around and chafe inside that drilling in the cases. It's a little thing that can leave you on the side of the road in the dark when the drizzle starts. And regarding strobe timing, I don't know how accurate the Triumph timing marks are but the Norton degree arc can be bumped out of alignment. It's always a good idea to check that the timing marks on the primary are accurate; this can be done by using a timing degree disc. Good plan to not use WD-40 on the gaskets holding the coils. WD-40 is made to be a water dispersant (it was the 40th formulation that they tried -- "WD-40"), there's only enough oil in the mixture to hold the water dispersant chemical in location. It's not really a good lube and it can be rough on rubber/soft plastic parts. Also, with silicone spray, you can get silicone spray where you don't want it; if it lands of painted parts, the silicone component will bleed into paint and -- if you need to repair a scratch or find that paint is wearing off - any repair paint you apply will not stick well to it. Far better is to get some "rubber lubricant", it was made specifically to not cause rubber to degrade (like anything petroleum such as Vaseline), they use it install rubber buffer suspension bushes on the car suspensions when these parts are pressed into metal bores. Once you realize how good it is, you'll find lots of places to use it to keep rubber and soft plastic bits in good condition. Oh, and the central fastener holding the original advance unit and the new rotor in place is a screw, as are the pillar fasteners. A bolt has an unthreaded shoulder portion under the head of the fastener -- if you ask a hardware stockist for a "bolt" in a place that's threaded for a screw, you might end up stripping threads without noticing. These are just little details that can make a TriSpark installation better. Thanks again for the great video -- many riders installing TriSparks will find it helpful! (* The bad ones were supplied by Lucas to BSA, Triumph, and Norton for use on the production line and many were also put into the spares chain. So, even if you're getting "NOS" spares, there's a chance you could be getting one of the tapered ones. They'll work fine until someone honks down on the taper thinking it's the right thing to do to remove the unit, then you run into a stuck advance.)

    • @MadTinkerman
      @MadTinkerman 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @brucebear1, thanks so much for the very detailed and informative response! Really great tip on how to correctly remove the advance unit. Now that I have the advance unit out I won't need to reinstall it or remove it again on this bike but that information will certainly be useful for other bikes going forward. I'll take your good advice and add a dab of silicone to secure the wires to the faceplate of the Trispark device so they don't rattle around, and also check the rubber grommet where the wires go through the case to make sure it's in good condition. Thanks so much for the part number. Your comment regarding the potential inaccuracy of the timing marks is very interesting. I am having an issue with the bike where it is backfiring when I try to start it through the carbs so wondering if the timing marks are incorrect and causing the issue. I'll do as you suggested and use a timing degree wheel to double check the marks. Definitely going to purchase some 'rubber lubricant' and add that to my workshops for similar situations where rubber lubrication is required. Appreciate the tip. Very much appreciate your clarification on the terminology of a 'machine screw' relative to a 'bolt.' I'll commit this to memory and do my best to use the correct terminology going forward. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this detailed comment! I'm going to take your good advice on these points and really appreciate the help. Cheers!

    I tried a TriSpark igniton on my Commando and had serious trouble with it, as have several other members of our Norton club. Having the electronics down in the points case makes for a nice neat installation but the heat and vibration are likely to cause failures after a while, and not necessarily a long while. That is a brutal environment for electronic components. The failure mode occurs after they are warmed up. You will find one or both cylinders suddenly goes away. You'll coast to the side of the road, fiddle around a bit, and try restarting, and it will restart (after cooling down a bit) and you'll ride off again, only to repeat the process a little further down the road. On my Commando I would follow the same test route from a cold start and the thing would fail within about 100 yards of the same point, consistently, a couple miles away. Good luck! Any electronic ignition with the electronics separated from the pick-up will be more reliable.

      @@MadTinkerman I should have noted that my experiences were several years ago and it is possible that they've beefed up the electronics against these kinds of failures, but there's no way around the fact that this is a very difficult engineering job if you're trying to keep the cost within some reasonable range. NASA and the military are prepared to pay a lot more than the average vintage bike guy for hardened electronics! It will not hurt my feelings at all if the current product has been improved to where those breakdowns no longer occur.

Like all mechanical stuff, have them sit around, usused, is never good. Great to hear of your experience with your two T140's and that you don't have these sorts of problems. @kevinhelms7156, the kit did not include new springs, but I purchased news ones and on the advice of others, I installed springs for a 650 as opposed to the 750 which with hindsight I think was a mistake. I think I'll order new 750 springs and install those as I have had to tighten the 650 springs so that the bolts extrude past the top of the nuts so as to get them strong enough to mitigate slipping. Enjoying your series, thanks for the time and effort! I have a 76 T140 and have done many of these jobs also. I don't remeber having an issue with my socket though on the oil pressure release valve, mine I'm sure has a thinner wall. I also do both rocker shaft O rings at the same time, just did them yesterday actually. The rockers are off the bike at the moment which makes it a bit harder. What I did with miine is that I put some Loctite sealant in the O ring groove first (cleaning any excess) then pop the rings on. I then stack some washers on the oil feed side leaving enough thread for a corresponding nut, then 'wind in' the rocker shaft. I have the special tool as it was cheap as chips to guide O ring in. When everything is back together/head and rockers attached, I'll torque the dome nuts down to spec with fresh copper washers. I will now binge watch some more of this. For a 'tinkering guy' it's obvious to me you've done a lot of this type of work before!

    Hello Kevin, do you happen to know if disabling the coin mechanism is as simple as connecting 2 wires together ? A friend of mine has got a Wurlitzer Lyric (I think 1967) and I manage to get power to it, the lights light up, but inserting a coin does nothing, you can only reject the coin. I'd like to test if at least everything works by bypassing the coin mechanism.

    • @MadTinkerman
      @MadTinkerman 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @BrainHurricanes, firstly thanks so much for watching the video! I am frankly not familiar with how to put the Lyric on free play. If you don't already, it's probably a good idea to source a manual, but in the interim, there is a lot of good forums that can often assist and provide info. Here's a link to one of those forums where they explain how to put various Wurlitzer models on free play: jukeboxaddicts.proboards.com/thread/546/howto-wurlitzer-2000-3300-free. Separately, my experience with these machines is that most problems are solved by cleaning all of the leaf switches. There is a product called 'Deoxit' that is amazing and the best contact cleaner I have found. Careful gentle cleaning of the switches with 'Deoxit' and then spraying all of the leaf switches with it can often solve a lot of problems. Let it thoroughly dry for few hours before powering the machine back on. Wurlitzers are great machines. Hopefully this helps. If you haven't already, please subscribe. Really appreciate it!

    Oh man, this happens all the time. Super common and easy to fix without a tear down. Since the kick start goes through the clutch, just kick the bike over with the clutch pulled in. Do this a few times it will come loose. If for some reason it does not, go ahead and start the bike, then get it rolling down your driveway or a slight hill or whatever you have. Once it is above a walking pace with the engine running at idle the bike will slip into first or 2nd easily with a little rev manipulation. Once you are moving and in gear, shift into 3rd or 4th, pull in the clutch and rev the motor and it will for sure break loose immediately. Rarely need the second procedure since pulling in the clutch and kicking will get it free after a few tries every time that I can remember. Some say it can be prevented with careful setting of the springs on the clutch, but in my experience they all eventually stick when parked for a while.

    Clutch adjustment, step by step on a Triumph. 1)Back off thr clutch cable all the way. 2) Adjust the push rod screw. Turn the screw in till it just stops. Back out 1/4 turn and lock the nut. (when the engine gets hot the aluminum cases will expand more then the steel trans main shaft making gap bigger ) 3) adjusting the clutch cable. Pull the cable out of ajusting sleeve at the clutch lever handle. The cable come out of the sleeve 1/16" to 1/8". Adjust the sleeve as needed.

    You have the wrong clutch lever on a Triumph twin. The twins use a 7/8" lever. That's from the center if the pivot bolt to the center of the cable hole . Trident use a lever that's 1' center to center. It make a big difference in the lever pul.

      Hi @tokairic3925, thanks so much for sharing your experience regarding the Triumph clutch! You're right! After I took it apart, cleaned up all the plates and took all the rust / deburring off the steels, it worked perfectly once installed properly per the manual and guidance from others like yourself. The only issue I had with it is how much effort it took to pull the clutch lever. I replaced the original with a 7 disc Airco clutch kit and that reduced the amount of effort from ~40 lbs measured at the lever to 18 lbs of effort. If you want to see that video, and the measurements before and after, here's the link: th-cam.com/video/yGT0_aIy-4I/w-d-xo.html Thanks again for leaving a comment! Fairly normal for clutch plates to stick when the bike is stood. Try different oil. Pull the clutch in and kick over the bike to free the clutch plates or put the bike in second gear and pull in the clutch, rocking the bike in gear may free the plates. Others have said adjust the clutch spring tension so the pressure plate spins true with no wobble. Make sure you don't over tighten the clutch springs too.

    • @MadTinkerman
      @MadTinkerman หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tokairic3925, thanks so much for sharing this info! This is the first bike I have had where if you let the bike sit that the clutch plates can stick. Owning a vintage Triumph requires a fairly steep learning curve from other, especially Japanese, bikes. That said I am really enjoying this bike along with all it's quirks and idiosyncrasies. I know now to kick the bike over a few times with the clutch lever engaged to free up the plates prior to starting. You're right about getting it set up right, especially to remove any wobble. Took me a bit to get it right, but once set up, I am no longer having issues with it sticking.

    Clutches on old Britbikes were not made of the finest steel. The usual cause of clutch drag is burs on the little tabs on the friction and steel plates. Grinding the burs off can make a big difference, I suspect a former owner had the adjusters so far out to reduce the clutch effort. I don't see how that can be the cause of the sticking though. One of the comments below shows how to reduce the wobble. It does not look as if you need new clutch parts. You should always use a new gasket on the primary case. When starting my bike I always free up the clutch by kicking it over a couple times with the clutch disengaged.

      Hi @johndesmond1987, thanks so much for these tips! After I cleaned up the clutch steels and thoroughly cleaned everything, it worked fine. The only issue I had was how hard it was to pull the clutch lever, so decided to pull the trigger and purchased a 7 disc clutch kit which made a huge difference! I did a video on that as well. I measured the amount of pull it took to engage the lever both before the 7 disc clutch mod and after, and it's incredible what a huge, measurable, difference it made. Here's the link to that video if you're interested in seeing it: th-cam.com/video/yGT0_aIy-4I/w-d-xo.html When I first purchased this old girl I had no idea you were to kick it over a few times with the clutch lever engaged before starting; but because of your comments and others, I do now. I know you said when you cleaned your carbs that you were going to replace them. Great rebuild ! After installing your new ones did it improve performance?? Was it much better?? I need to go through the carbs on a 71 . Looking for a rebuild kit just not having much luck finding it - would you mind so much letting me know were you found the carbs or a kit ? I youse a small hose and listen to the air flow you put it in at the bottom just at the slide you can hear when they are equal. The unasinc you will find isn’t as accurate as your ear . • @MadTinkerman
      @MadTinkerman หลายเดือนก่อน

      @timmcfarland2736, the issue with my old carbs was that the slides were sticky and had a fair bit of wear that was causing air leakage past the slides. I worked on the old carbs and got them working much, much better but still decided to purchase new Amals due to the slide air leakage issue. Here's the video of the work I did on the old carbs which really helped: th-cam.com/video/p_mYdRgNTkI/w-d-xo.html If money was tight, I'd be riding the bike still with the old carbs. New Amal Premiers are a lot of $'s so would try hard to get your old ones working acceptably first. I purchased mine from a retired gentleman that owned a British bike shop in Vancouver which he recently shut down upon retirement. Not sure of your location, but if you are in British Columbia I can give you his contact info in case he has more of them. Wouldn't be worthwhile if you're not relatively local. The new Amal Premiers did make a big difference especially in balancing because being new, they are both exactly the same. The old carbs leaked air past the slides differentially and as such balancing them throughout the rev range was really hard / impossible to get perfect. That's awesome that you have both a '71 Triumph and a cool '64 MGB! I have a '59 TR3A so very similar to what you have in terms of old school British 'fun' :) Thanks so much for watching the videos and leaving a comment! If you haven't already, please subscribe. I did the same upgrade to my 1975 250 TNT last year. I had 2 concerns, the flywheel nut only using half the threads and the weight of the flywheel is about half the weight of the original. We make the adapters for PVL ignitions used in MX and road racing, and we work closely with VAPE ignition as one of the largest importers to North America.

    I had one of these when i was 17 years old and that was 50 years ago. To adjust the clutch plate you need to pull in the clutch leaver in after adjusting the play in the system. Sit aside the machine pull in the clutch leaver and then use the kick starter to rotate the gearbox and clutch and look down and see if you have any wobble in the clutch plate, adjust the springs until the clutch pate is not wobbling while rotating. If you fully assemble and have trouble with it dragging then it is because you have not taken out the total wobble.

      @kayak1100, thanks so much for the tip, especially the information that the clutch lever should be depressed when doing the adjustment. When I did it I put the bike in gear off the ground and rotated the back tire which then spun the clutch basket and used that method to adjust until there was no wobble. I'll give your method a try next time I work on the clutch. Very much appreciate you watching the video and taking the time to provide this info. If you haven't already, please subscribe. I Really Appreciate it!! Cheers.
