Mega Moto 80 - Can I Fix the Chain Coming Off Problem?
On this episode of DIYWILLY, I take apart the wheels and swap the 4 ½” brake drum with flange (Hub adapter) from the front to the back wheel.. Hopefully this will fix the sprocket, chain alignment and keep the chain from coming off. We’ll also take a look at the bearings and pack them with grease. Does this fix the problem? We’ll find out.
So follow along as we modify the MM80 frame with Biggs the 5hp snow blower monster engine..

The swap worked! Probably a combination of things. Good to see it on the road again. Our parrot 🦜 Fred heard Spike and started meowing 😂
Yep glad it’s rideable again. I have another Briggs that I bought and the seller said it ran but needs carb…. Sure 👍 So I’ll take Biggs off and try that engine. Spike is getting so gabby in his old age. I guess he has his own fans now on the tube.
Excellent. You actually read the manual. 😂 kudos.
@@tinkeringeekkissimmeefl4495 Hello, yes sometimes you have too. Thanks for watching!!
Is the coil upgraded form the wire or the whole wire and coil ? Cause I'm curious why not change just the wire and grand it ?
Hello Israel, From my understanding the coil itself is wound different allowing it to create hotter spark. This is why the coil gap on the flywheel is larger. Thanks for watching!!
Looks like that solved it. Seems like chain and sprocket issues can be a major pain sometimes.
Yep seems to have fixed it. It was a simple test ride. Haven’t really put the beans to it yet. I’m going to say that the drum was the bent part.
@@DIYWilly Sometimes I think there is no one single cause with chain problems. A slight misalignment at one point, a small bend at another, a little slop somewhere else. No one of them would cause an issue but when you add them up, it becomes a problem. Stacked tolerances I guess is the technical term.
@WalkerSmallEnginePerformance Well said! Exactly 👍
My twenty twenty one frontier has sixty five thousand miles on it... I bought it new... Probably time for transmission fluid change... Thanks for the video very helpful.

Run 26 lbs springs on that 265
Hello Stingyduce, I have a set of both 22’s and 26’s. I can install the 26’s. Thanks for the heads up. Thanks for watching!!
What adjustments did you make when it was too tight? My hood doesn't latch all the way down unless I slam it. I feel like I need to raise the latch a bit. Are those 10mm bolts adjustable?
Hello Micheal, Yes the hood latch is adjustable. You are correct if you have to slam it then it needs to be raised. The 10mm bolts will do that for you. Do the adjustment a little at a time till you get it where you like it. Hope this helps.. Thanks for watching!!!
@ thank you for the reply. I guess that wasn’t the issue. I need to take it all off and clean it up good. I can get it to latch down all the way just fine…but then it pops unlatched easily. First little bump in the road and it unlocks
All that work when all it was is the ball joint
Hello Jason, The work was done to replace control arm bushings. Easier to just replace the whole arm. I could have probably replaced the bushing and saved some money but still would’ve had to remove the arms. Thanks for watching!!

Can you please link the rod you used rebuilding a 224 rn
Hello, There are a couple options for the 224 billet rods. The one I used is an ARC 6773 which is the one I used. There is some clearancing required for this rod. EC Carburetor also makes one that doesn’t require as much clearancing. I’ll leave links to both. www.ombwarehouse.com/6773-ducar-212cc-3-303-billet-rod/ www.eccarburetors.com/predator-224-tillotson-ducar-212e-billet-connecting-rod Hope this helps you! You talk too much
Hello John, I’ve been told that before. Can’t please everyone. You don’t like details? If I didn’t explain things then people would say I didn’t talk enough. It’s kind of a double edged sword. Anyway thanks for watching!! Have a blessed day!
This product can fail and cause electronics issues. Use the Shift Power version. The electronics are higher quality and do not fail in hot/cold wear and tear. Do your homework before choosing this product
Thanks for the recommendation!!
If You Let Mechanic do all this Work How Much Would they Charge?
Too much $$$. At over a $100+ an hour to me if you can do the work yourself then save the money. I believe with at least 7-8 hrs of labor and $400 in parts. My guess would be some near $1600. But I could be wrong. Maybe you have a cheaper mechanic or use cheaper parts. Thanks for watching!!!
How long is the video cable? Also was kind of connector did use to get the 12 volts and ground? Thanks for the nice video.
Hello diego, The length of the wire for the camera is 25ft and I used these connectors to install everything. www.amazon.com/dp/B07PPDZZB7/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_X5Q6V3G17X0P8AZEQK1J?linkCode=ml2&tag=robertwill0aa-20 Thanks for watching!!!

the bushing removal part was really helpful! just did mine on my Titan and I probably would've struggled not knowing that lol
Do you have sub in it?
Hello Romeo, I do have a sub in truck now and I have a video of the install. But at the time of this video no I did not have a sub in the vehicle. Thanks for watching!!
@DIYWilly Wow great! It sounds like it has sub too. Is it good also on bookshelf speaker box?
Yes the are excellent speakers.
Arent you worried about hurting transmission. Changing when it's too dirty??
Hello, No I wasn’t worried about changing when it was dirty. I was more worried about causing a leak when I didn’t have one before. Thanks for watching!!
@@DIYWilly did transmission run ok after fluid flush?
Let’s be clear.. I did not flush the transmission. I only drained the pan and refilled with the same amount of fresh new fluid. That fluid change was over a year ago and the truck is performing like new. In fact the truck has made several long distance drives, desert trips and is about to go to the Grand Canyon.
Shouldn't you retard it 2 degrees rather than advance it?
Hello James, The 308 cam I used required 34 degrees timing. The ARC flywheel is built with 32degrees. I used the 2 degree key to get the needed 34 degrees. Great question! Thanks for watching!!!
@@DIYWilly right, so you moved the timing 2 degrees back not forward?
Yes 👍 BTDC
I want to run leaner. Which way do I go on the needle jet? Up or down?
Hello wonkydonkey, You would want to go down on the needle. Thanks for watching!!!
I hear a cockatiel
Hello Christopher, Yes that would be Spike. He helps me keep an eye on what’s going on in the garage. Thanks for watching!!
I'm not a troll BUT flip flops for heavy mechanic work? You over greased the pins. They will fail if you use that much. Also probably not the correct grease. There is a reason for the expensive brake grease. You didn't show using the hammer on the rotor. One wack in the wrong place and it's history. Where did you hit it? How did you compress the Piston? My current brake job is due to dealer over applied pin grease. It is critical.
Hello RealElectric, Yep always wear shorts and flip flops. Just what I do. Thanks for the heads up on the grease. Thanks for watching!!
Good stuff Willy! I bet you could almost do a rebuild with a 10mm wrench on most of the newer vehicles. Exact same story with my H3, seemed like everything on and around the throttle body was 10mm. Takes the fun out of having to use a different wrench for each bolt though. 🤣
Yes and all the bolts are the same length. I guess it’s to make it easier on the service technician to get the work done faster. If I remember correctly most of the bolts on my 68 bug were 13mm. Just makes it easier. Thanks for checking it out!!
Do you install the back also??
Hello Deon, No I did not install any lift on the back. I just wanted to level out the truck. Thanks for watching!!!
On the small covers the large oring do you have a part number? dealer is having issues....THx
You ever use any fuel additives in the gas tank Willy? There are some good ones out there they say helps keep things spiffy clean in the fuel system and some work on any carbon deposits. So they say😊
Hello Lou-eye, Yes I do use Lucas Oil brand cleaner in a few of my vehicles. I hope that this will help keep the engine clean for many years to come. However the throttle body doesn’t benefit front these additives being up stream from the fuel injectors. This build up comes from the dirty Pcv system. I believe the use of an oil catch can will prevent this like the one I use on the frontier. Thanks for watching!!
@DIYWilly ..👍. Btw, I just installed new Rock-auto carb certified cats and exhaust manifolds on my xterra (previous owner put some lousy shorty headers on it that cracked and fell apart) , finally got rid of the engine check light, ready for smog in Jan.🙌🇺🇸
Oh nice!! I know those carb certified parts can be pricey. Do you know what brand the shorties were so I know to stay away from them. I’ve wanted to put headers on the Frontier but haven’t decided which ones I like best.
@DIYWilly ... they were Doug Thorley. They cracked up were the tubes are welded to the collector, real thin metal tubes. I put some Dormain exhaust manifolds on it very beefy, similar to oem, I dont trust the headers quality anymore.
👍 noted..
how has it hold up so far?
Hello roy, It’s held up very well. I emptied it at the last oil change and it was a bout half full of oily liquid. Unfortunately I was in a hurry to get the truck ready for a trip and didn’t document the process. I’m very happy with the catch can. Thanks for watching!!
Great maintenance video! I always get nervous when the boss says she hears a strange noise coming from the car 🤣
Mrs. Willy had been telling me for a while that it was running rough but when I would drive it it was fine. So I was tired of hearing it and got it done…😁 Wasn’t really that dirty but cleaning it did make a difference. Forgot to mention about disconnecting the negative side of the battery when working on electric/computer controlled parts to prevent possible problems. Thanks for checking it out!
@@DIYWilly As long as it meets Mrs. Willy’s approval I would say you’re in good standing!
What bumper is that?
Hello bluebands, This is a custom made bumper with the light mounts added. Thanks for watching!!!
Can you take the plastic storage section out ?
Hello Brent, The plastic storage section from the lid? It does unscrew from the lid. Or are you talking about the cup holder and storage section?
adjust the valve lash
Hello reimerracing1, This engine runs really good..Thanks for watching!!
Stay strong boss u got this 💪🏼💯
Thanks man I’ll stay with it.. it can’t beat Willy!!
Don’t you think you need some kind of isolators on those engine mounts?
Hello Kylesyx, Ideally yes isolating engine and transmission mounts would be better. The original Polaris engine and transmission are mounted together with rubber mounts to help with vibration. This being an offroad car with some street driving the solid mounting will transfer vibration through the car but it will be fine. Also it’s nearly impossible to connect the Chevy Ecotec to the transmission like it’s done originally. We need to keep CVT clutch alignment and I believe this is the best way. Great question though! Hope you subscribed so you can follow the progress. Thanks for watching!!! Have a blessed day!
Hang in there Willy! Lost footage can be frustrating. The alignment issue is a kick in the teeth but you're tough, determined and you can do it. You're not alone, everyone that's ever done anything has danced that dance at one time or another, one step forward, two steps back. The goal is worth the effort.
Oh man the lost footage was a disaster. This video is the 3rd attempt to complete the video. But yeah I worked through it. I worked all morning today (10/21/24) to align everything. Between the videos I removed everything to have a fresh start and it worked. I’m happy with where it is now. Plan on putting the body back on this weekend and start the roll cage. Well as I said I might take a break from it and work on an engine or minibike. I have the injection pump out of the Samurai and sent it out to Giles diesel performance in Canada. So when it gets back I’ll get the Samurai running again. Then I can do the AFM/DOD repair on the 5.3 in the Silverado. Too much going on.. Thanks again for watching!!
Yeah heart breaking when recording and find out it didnt, been there😮💨. That sucks the belt is barely off alignment! Now all the little nit-picky things start turning up. But knowing you Willy "you will not be defeated"!💪 Just cool down get some rest and regroup, and tackle it another day, of course after the honey do's.🇺🇸👍
Started putting it back together again . Hopefully I’ll be happier with the results.
Thanks for the update! I feel your pain I just lost a completely finished video 😱 it’s just a flesh wound though! Keep da faith and power on… One step closer.
After this video I took everything out again and started over. Just wasn’t happy yet. I made a new aluminum transmission mount and hopefully that will fix the little bit the engine was off. I was loosing sleep over it. Not really but it did bother me. Thanks for checking it out. I’ve been busy and got behind on my video watching..
@@DIYWilly It’s looking great 👍🏻 and a busy time of year. The desert season begins and the holidays.. And most importantly honey do’s 🤣
Oh man don’t remind me about honey do’s. That list was long today.. Mrs Willy was cracking that whip…😂

Hello lastresort, Thanks for watching!!
I just tried making this template of the bottom of my 224cc engine for my mega moto 80. Failed miserably. I made it work, but the holes are far too big. Now I have to use large washers. Would love to see how you did it.
Hello MountainEagle, Glad you could make it work. I don’t have another frame to show this process again. I did however eventually elongate the holes to the left side for better alignment.
Did the clunk go away?
Hello Sleepy, Yes the clunk went away 💯. Definitely worth the time to replace. Thanks for watching!!
Hi. Can you tell me what and those wheels can be found. 10” and the fender fits??
These wheels are 8” Azusa Spinner Wheels and can be found at either OMBWarehouse or GoPowerSports. They’re also sold at Amazon I believe here is a link amzn.to/3Nwocs8 They are nice wheels. I like the 2 piece wheels they are easier to mount tires. Thanks for watching!!

Hello Randy, I plan on running 32’s at the moment but that could change. Kinda depends on how the engine, transmission and CVT work out. Thanks for watching!!
I replaced my timing chain tensioners, etc, with all new oem parts, oil galley gaskets, and it still rattles around 2-2500 rpms cruising however its 1/10 of the noise before sounded like diesel tick
Sounds like there is a problem with the tensioners or guides. Thanks for watching!!
@DIYWilly they were all replaced like everything behind front cover was replaced It's been doing it for 50k+ miles, new chian, etc. made it super quiet, and i did many 6+h towing trips
I hate chain issue's.
I think it’s a bent sprocket hub. I’ll replace the hub and give it another go at a ride. Thanks for watching!!
Nothing like grabbing a hot bolt! Been there done that 😂 great upgrade, perseverance and persistence for sure. You inspired me to quit procrastinating and change the belt on the Can-am.. need to get the special clutch tool first but can’t find one with the right threads 😢looking forward to the next update!
I feel like I’m at the hardest part of this build. For the last 3weeks I’ve been trying get correct belt alignment and lock in the motor mounts and it’s fight me everyday. I have it so close but it’s still not correct. Now I pretty much have to start over. Unfortunately the work I have done so far is fully welded. Now I’m cutting it loose for the 4th time. I want everything so perfect. It would probably be fine now but would most likely burn belts. I’ll get it though, I’m pretty sure I figured it out this time. When I get these clutches and motor mounts all done I think I’ll take a break from the Baja project.
@@DIYWilly You’ll get it done ✅ Willy style! Take a breather and go back at it when the spirit moves you… 🤙🏻
Catch can in a New engine, really? thats a NO GO 🤦♂️
