How much physical room does the antenna take up? I mean the guy wires and radials. I only have so much room.
As you can see from the video, I have a very tight spot for my DX Commander. My guy ropes have a diameter of about 6' so pretty small footprint. My radials are all about 10' as per Callum's guidance. Coming out away from the fence, they all go out fully extended. Going in towards the fence, I had to fold them along the fence. This does not seem to adversely impact the radiation pattern significantly.
Great review. I've had one of the key for a while. It's very durable and easy to send on. I did replace the knob with a navy style knob.
Thanks! I thought about the navy knob too but haven't yet switched.
You're getting quite an impressive collection of lilliputian keys there, my friend!
It is a sickness, but I am fine with it.
What is your recommendation for learning CW? It is on my list of important things to do. Merry Christmas and 73, Bill.
Thanks Bill. I have a video series on learning CW: th-cam.com/video/D-uAwaWkmlA/w-d-xo.html The most important thing is to learn the Morse Code characters by sound and at a speed that you recognize it as an individual sound and not counting the pattern of dits and dahs.
Tidradio works fairly well but I have a 5RM and even though it’s on the supported radio list, it won’t connect because of a bad baud rate. Tidradio has been absolutely no help. After 7 emails and 1 response I gave up.
Sorry to hear that. I think the BL1 is a great idea that needs a bit more work particularly in the software. For most, a simple FTDI cable and CHIRP are a better solution. Best of luck my friend.
merci Bob ..ca ma beaucoup aider a faire un choix ...great video Jean VE2JCW
You are more than welcome!
I recently got GMRS. While I was learning about all I can do and cant do with GMRS, it got me learning more about HAM. HAM was the begining of everything. (Cell phones, text messaging, making phone calls, the internet) everything is possible with HAM. Im going to start studying. I like the HAM community also. Im subscrbing, wish me luck out there. WSFJ364 GMRS only for now.
Thank you for your observations. I've been unable to get my H3 to do USB-c programming using my Apple Macbook, which is disappointing. Luckily, the old Kenwood-style programming cable worked fine with CHIRP, so I'm using that. I will investigate saving the settings via bluetooth and Odmaster app, for easy retrieval and modification -- and hope that the company's IOS support is better than the Mac OS functionality.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the programming.
I used the ARRL Tech License Guide and might have got a perfect score on exam, anyway I passed. It’s so simple a caveman could do it if he was interested enough.
Absolutely! Use what works for you to pass the exam.
And the Bluetooth features?
I don't use the bluetooth that much since I mostly use my Stick for field work but it is a nice feature.
thank you.pleas slow your speaking
Thanks and I will keep your feedback in mind.
Okay, sir, here's my problem. It won't let me register through the app. What do I need to do
I think you can go to the website and register there. Not sure on that. I don't really use it much so I am sorry I am not more help.
Do you have your paddles configured for left-handed keying (even though you key with your right hand)?
Nope. They are configured standard way as they come.
@@houseofhamradio I key with my left hand and write with my right. I learned that technique about 30 years ago and I had always assumed my setup was the reverse of most people. I guess I just learned to send with my left hand in a right-handed configuration. I've been lying to myself!
It really doesn't matter which hand you use so long as it works for you. The typical configuration of paddles is the dit on the left and dah on the right. If you don't like that, many rigs allow you to reverse it. The downside to swapping things around is if you ever go use someone else's station.
I passed my general exam today. WM7X and his VE team is awesome. 73 KQ4PMD.
Congrats!
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Best innovation since the chopstick!
Thanks!
The "House of Ham"... Are you an ex-cop???
not exactly. I am retired from the Coast Guard and did do maritime law enforcement in my early career.
A tip from me on removing enamel from wires without risking to break them. Works very well even for very thin wire (I did it for 42 gauge wire without a problem). Take a tablet of aspirin. Put the part of the wire that you want to remove the enamel from on top of the tablet. Press down gently with the hot tip of the soldering iron. The aspirin will melt and dissolve the enamel. Next, apply flux and tin the wire. That's all. Have a fan or some other form of ventilation because it will produce some fumes.
Thanks for the tip. I will have to give that a try.
Inductophobia - a neologism for fear of winding coils.
Awesome! thanks
Great thank you. I wish I had seen this a month or so ago when I started on my QMX+. I'm going to download the files for the holding widget and I'll twist a friends arm to print it for me. I find the best way to scrape the enamel off is not to use the sharp edge of the knife blade but the back edge instead. It has less tendency to cut the wire and does as good a job. What I use now rather than a knife blade is an engineers scraper I made from a 3 square (triangular) file as an apprentice back in the 70s. Works really well and has put a tool I haven't used for years back into use. Cheers & beers de Al G8YKM.
Thanks for the kind words. As you saw in the video, I was building my QMX+ as well. I would have loved to have the holder for the other kits I have built. Good tip on how you scrape the enamel. You do have to be careful with the Exacto knife but I have yet to break a wire. Light pressure is the key.
Great video and tips. I built my trusdx high band board and the magnet wire was a pain.
Glad you got something out of it.
If lose count take a picture with your phone and zoom in. Great Video
Yes! Great Tip! thanks for sharing.
What are you trying to do, take away my last excuse to build my own QRP Labs kit? Despite that, I liked you video anyway ;)
Thanks, Yup. Your last excuse officially removed! Get on with it and join the fun! Seriously, you will find these things are no big deal. Good luck in your kit building journey.
It is really satisfying to make QSOs using a kit you built. 🙂
It is a thrill do doubt. It is also very cool to see how far you can get out there with these little rigs.
Toroids were the greatest thing in inductors to come along....not complicated, easy to design for applications, great uH to space ratio. Simple to wind.
Absolutely agree. thanks for the comment.
Thank you great video. I am starting to study for my HF license here in Canada (in the USA called "general" I think). I have had my ROCM license for decades (NASBLA approved) so this will be a nice upgrade and a bit of vanity on my side to have an actual call sign. I find the HAM Study web site superb and I hope the questions in the Canadian exam will be similar! Thanks again and good luck! Cheers, a.
Bets of luck. I am pretty certain the concepts will carry over but anything related to rules and such may differ so caution there.
Love it 😍
Thanks Saurabh. And Thanks for the pointer on how to get one!
The new flex M radios are obnoxiously big. I’d pay more for a smaller enclosure.
Could not agree more. I am just not a fan of these computer reliant radios myself.
Well, finally... Took advantage of the Elecraft Black Friday sale and got $35 off plus free shipping. The installation was easy except for wondering if the solder really did flow down the pin and into the hole! (Apparently it did because I couldn't pull the pins back out, and the charger works. 😁) I went with Method 1, by the way. Really appreciate your video, only took me a year to get up the nerve to do this. And I don't know why I thought my "E" hole was full of solder, because it wasn't!
Glad it worked out for you. It is wonderful to not have to pull the battery to charge.
You should understand the concepts as such understanding is what a license proves.
Very true. thanks for the comment.
Can the Kenwood 3207 Red be programmed using this method?
I am not sure. If you can program your Kenwood with a Baofeng cable, then this might work as well.
Please change YOUR to YOU'RE in the Pssssst pop-up on your website. Improper English annoys many people and it just doesn't come across as being competent or professional.
I will pass it on.
Happy Thanksgiving! Appreciate the tip, as I get my KH1 next week. Black Friday Elecraft sale....
Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.
@houseofhamradio I hope so too.
I’ve never used one of these but for $200 you can get a Bamakey TPIII shipped. That is an amazing key and built to last. Seems like a better value to me. But I’d still love to try this key and see if it lives up to the hype.
I actually have both. I do love the TP3. It ranks right up there with a Begali but doesn't have the super small light form factor of the Pico. IMHO, I think it does live up to the hype. Thanks for the comment.
If you have a 3D printer, Adam K6ARK has his version of the palm pico. I have been using one for a while and they are great. Not sure how it stacks up to the original though...
I have printed several of Adam's paddles and keys and they are awesome. Don't quite match up with this but still very good and you cannot beat the price.
@@houseofhamradiowhat about the palm pico specifically? He just released that design to the public a month or two ago. It uses the same hardware that his other design uses.
Thanks, I just looked at his new design. I will print and do a video on that one as well.
He must be worth watching, he uses the made up word Unobtainium.
Only the best for my viewers.
Heil started around Marissa, IL, with Heil Sound. Bob did alot for the music industry. I got into amateur radio 10 years ago. I also went to high school knowing Bob's family. He was a real legend. Thanks for reviewing the headset. I'm KC9WlZ.
Thanks for sharing your story.
Grail Paddle. I should have bought one when I first saw them offered.
First again Dave! Yeah, you and me both my friend. I lamented not getting one for years. It is worth the wait though.
After buying the Pota Reel , I realized that there was really smaller spaces I wouldn't be able to use my reel as thought, so I just purchased this antenna so thank you for this video!! I am super excited it
It is my POTA Go-To antenna. Quick to setup and I have had great success with it.
@@houseofhamradio that is just soo cool!!!! This makes me super happy to hear!
Do you have good success using the antenna at full length? I believe they say to lower the top 3 elements when using 10m 15 and 17m
I have only ever used it fully extended. You need to use a tuner anyhow. You may get better performance on higher bands by shortening but I would think the difference would be negligible. The value to this antenna is you don't have to mess with it. Just hit the tuner and get on the air for each band.
Can this model do both Ham and GMRS?
Yes it can. Even though this radio is marketed and sold as both GMRS and Ham versions, they are the exact same hardware. There is a series of buttons to hold while you turn the radio which will determine whether it is GMRS, Ham or Both. I don't recall those off hand but there are plenty of videos that show how to do it.
I passed both of my exams online and I plan to study for my extra. It is very convenient and no distractions or interruptions. Nothing against the local chapter but I went for my general in person. I arrived early and well prepared. It was chaos. They were disorganized lots of applicants and was in an open Public library (kids running around, etc.). Not what I expected. I left and signed up for an online exam that Sunday evening online and passed. Had my upgrade in a few days. My two experiences taking the exam online has been fantastic. I hope this option remains available.
Fortunately, I don't thing the online ability is going anywhere. I actually see it as becoming the standard (if it hasn't already) and the in-person will be the exception.
Go for it!!!
So when I try to hit the re Peter button, it tells me I have to log in. So when I go back to log in and I have to register And I put in my phone number and I hit verification code, get cold and it makes me do the little puzzle thing, but I never receive a code, a verification code to my phone. Am I doing something wrong
Not really sure. It is not something I use often and I know there are some quirks with it but that is not something I have experienced.
Sir, I have the same problem but I can't get any help. If you do, please let me know how to solve this problem
They cost more than I am willing to spend. I can put up with the inconvenience of the Nano VNA or others.
It is great to have choices. It wasn't always like this. You have to do what is right for you.
I really really wish we hv these same Online Conveniences here in the Philippines, here in the Philippines things are still being done as if it is Stil the 1950s, the 1970s & the 1980s pre internet era. On top of that you HAVE to GO through a Gauntlet of Hurdles of Bureaucratic Requirements of CONVERTING one permit INTO another permit into Another permit so on & So forth, Not just the amateur written exam. Plus the attitude is that the amateur radio Hobby is ONLY & SOLELY for the Rich, tvhe Can Affords & the Vry AFFLUENT & Well CONNECTED with entities so vry influencial with Lots of Connections TO Pull STRINGS For You. Unlike in the US that once you've got your US license, that US license vry much COVERS everything. No need for permit to purchase, permit To posses, permit To assemble a station and permit to SO ON AND SO FORTH before one Can finally Go on the Air in the Philippines. So in the Philippines if you are just an Ordinary Kid interested in electronics & HF radio experimenting THEN you are in a Tough Luck, you have TO GET WEALTHY & VRY POLITICALLY INFLUENCIAL FIRST b4 U can get into the ham radio hobby. In the philippines YOU HAVE TO BE PHYSICALKY IN THE FLESH IN THE NTC OFFICE TO APPLY. If You are a Vision Impaired handicap like me, they don't give Damn about your situation. I have been a General class licensed amateur radio operator since Aug 1984, when i First applied for & taken the written exam ii accomplished ALL in just Half a Day & within 4 days i got my ham license in the mail & by 1600 Hours i bought my HF gear & Honebrew my Antenna and was ON THE AIR without the bureaucracy & Hurdles of Permit this & permit that & so forth & was able to work my first DX station on CW... a Japsnese station all from my qth in California.
I am studying for my Tech right now. I can't drive due to medical (epilepsy), so being able to take the test online is important to me. I will have to check you guys out. I have my GMRS license already but I want to get into HAM as well.
Online testing has really made the exam much more accessible to many people. Glad it will allow you to get your license and join the community.
I recently woke up one morning and decided to go for my General. I browsed through the options on HamStudy, chose Stephen's team, and had my upgraded license within 24 hours. I even did it on my android phone. I highly recommend the team.
Stephen and the WM7X Team were very nice people. Their online exam was a good experience and looking forward to taking my General with them hopefully this weekend. Thanks again to WM7X team for the warm welcome. It's much appreciated.
It is a great team which is why I am willing to help them out when I can. Don't spend as much time as I would like to but that is life.
@@houseofhamradio Yes they are! I just move up to HF through them. Looking forward to the amateur Extra Class!
The A/B with the Sure mic was a nice touch. And I have the same problem with my XYL 🤣
Thanks, I was really surprised at how close the two mics were. Can't seem to get her interested in CW. Go figure.
Just did an early morning in Buckeyestan POTA sitting on a rock with the KH1. Between trying to keep track of my paperwork & the radio & getting chilled pretty good, it was painful. Got two Qs before getting back in the car and using the X5105 on 10m instead. If I'd had the use of the KH1 logging app, well, obviously that would have been one less thing to chill out about ;-) Now all I need is to find my KH1 interface cable & get that all organized so the next time I can do it all and let the radio log the Qs. Thanks for this video. Gonna save me plenty of frozen fingers for sure. 73 de W8IJN
I am a pretty fair weather op. I probably would have sat in the car to begin with. Kudos for toughing it out even if for only a short while.
Thank you for your video I just pass the thecnitian license and you guys was alsome very informative and easy to follow instructions and you guys have patience to explain everything thank you again for this opportunity
Congrats on new license and welcome to the Ham Radio community.
i dont want to be a ham. i want a radio where i could scan the ham frequencies without having to learn much. i want to push a button and have the radio find any ham broadcasts going on so i can listen. do you know of a very simple to operate radio for this task?
You might be best off with a scanner. Unfortunately, there isn't really anything where you can just push a button and find any ham conversations ( we aren't allowed to broadcast). That being said, you don't need to know a lot but you need to know where the ham bands are so you can program a scanner/receiver to listen to those frequencies. Best of luck.
@@houseofhamradio appreciate it
