I work as a Data Scientist so this is reassuring.
From my personal experience working with Data Scientist, they land quickly with generous salary offers. You are in good shape. Thanks for watching!
Is it beneficial to turn on your open to work function and leave it viewable only to recruiters if you're just passively looking for a new role? Or is it better to leave it off and only send out applications to jobs you're really interested in? I know it's best to not add the open to work frame around your photo as it makes you look desperate.
I would keep it off completely. Not having it on has never stopped any recruiter I have spoken with in contacting an individual.
@@BBenoist Thank you Bill.
Hope it will does the job search easy
It's another tool for you to use.

55yr old presumably has far greater Experience and qualifications than the 25 year old
Yes. And one of the challenges is if the 25 year old is the hiring manager.
@@BBenoist right the 25 year old doesn’t want to hire his untimely replacement Or anyone that will give them a hard time
Thank you for this video sir! can I also identify the soft skills in the volunteer section by writing my volunteer experience in sentences
You are welcome. And yes, absolutely you can highlight your soft skills in your volunteer section.
Hello Sir, It's a great insight. Also, how a recruiter scans your resume was great helpful information. I'd like to know about the general recruiting process, please correct me if I am wrong, So, first when you apply for a job your resume goes to a ATS and then it is selected and reviewed by a person and then further short listing and interview calls happen? Am I right? Thanks.
You are correct if an ATS is used in the hiring practice. The larger the company, the more common an ATS will be used. I have other videos on my channel that discuss how to locate recruiters, hiring managers and HR people at companies thereby allowing for the opportunity to bypass the ATS

Thank you. Although I am sorry you found it relatable :-). No one should ever work for a toxic boss

The thumbnail for this video is perfect! Nice bathrobe :-) Really appreciate your perspective (and personal experience!) of hiring people who are smarter than you. It takes a confident and secure person to do so. Also, absolutely agree to leave a bad boss if possible. Seek out another boss who is healthy and values all that you have to offer!
Thank. you, Colleen. I learned a long time ago, when you hire people smarter than you, they make you look good.
Hello Bill, your video covers the situation where you do not know the range of salary. If the range is provided, can you always ask for the top of the range and expect the company representative to negotiate down the salary or do you use your last salary as a reference and ask for a little more than your last salary, provided your last salary was within the range?
Great question. First and foremost, never try to negotiate a salary until the offer is made. Once you have a job offer with respective salary offer, then you negotiate. Based upon the offer, that is where you will start your negotiation. Most companies will offer more than what you were making previously. However, there is still room for negotiation. From my experience, you should be able to negotiate between 10% to 20% more. 10% usually does not bat an eye. 20% may be more challenging.
@@BBenoist Thank you for your quick answer, Bill.
Do you do private resume consulting?
Hi Pat, email me directly as to what you are looking for. bill@billbenoist.com. Thanks
This question is typically challenging for a lot of people. Really appreciate you tackling it and emphasizing not to address a weakness that is required for the role!
Thank you, Colleen. I was surprised when I learned several of my C-Level clients were still being asked this question.
Thanks, Bill! I'm interviewing tomorrow.
You are welcome. Good luck on the interview
If the interviewer doesn't want to know the truth, then don't ask me this question!

No! :-)
Your boss's boss has no idea what you're going to be doing most of the time! I've seen it in my 25 years of work experience! Meeting and interviewing with your boss's boss can be a double-edge sword.
I agree with you. My former boss (CIO) had multiple department heads reporting to him. If or when he would be the final interview, the candidate would know more about the job requirements than he would. He just wanted to feel comfortable there was a fit.
Reaching this point for interview is huge. This is great summary.
Thank you, Ali. It is something to be proud of.
Developing soft skills is so underrated. Love that you made space to share this
Thank you, Carina. I could not agree with you more, It is totally underrated, yet so important for landing a job.

Really appreciate the emphasis in this video on people's ability to develop new skills and noting example learning resources available (e.g., LinkedIn Learning, Skillshare, Udemy). You raised a pertinent point about actually showing employers you are a "lifelong learner" for example, by your actions versus simply noting this term on your resume.
Thank you, Colleen for zeroing in on the life-long learning skill. I think it's especially important for older workers to always "walk the talk" with it comes to this one.
Love your videos, have a 5 person team interview coming up and you are giving me good insight
I appreciate your kind words. Thank you!. I do have a video specifically for team interviews if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/2XW_rJTVyS8/w-d-xo.html. Wishing you the best of luck meeting the team!
Unfortunetly, ageism is pervasive in most industries, specially in IT/Tech. In the private sector, it has been the norm for many decades. In the public sector, it's not an issue. If you're 40 and over, you're considered "old" in the private sector, and you will never be told you didn't get hired based on this bias!
I worked over 25 years in IT before walking away and starting my coaching practice. Yes, I agree there is ageism in tech, but not in all of them. For example, Google has an average age of 28. The chances of you or I getting hired are probably slim - but I have had clients over 40 get hired there. The more mature companies like Intel or HP or IBM are a little more open to opportunities.
I've been doin contract work in IT and Tech, Since 2020!! It has it's pros and cons but it's better than being unemployed and getting shitty state unemployment benefits! Full-time, permanent would be ideal but contracting can be great if you know how to grind and hustle, and get many contracts without having to be unemployed for weeks or months, at a time! The longest I go without work is 2 or 3 months, since I've been contracting! Before this, I had 20+ years of experience in different areas and industries! I've been in IT/Tech for over 8 years, btw!
As you say, it definitely has it's pros and cons and sounds like more "pros" for you. I imagine the various contract jobs are also keeping your skills current which can be priceless. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I very much appreciate it.
Great tips Bill - especially the smiling tip! I would have thought to be more serious. Very helpful information!
Thank you, Alexa. I am glad you found this helpful :-)
Thank you good sir. I'm on my third - and hopefully final - interview today and it is with my prospective teammates. I've done a fair amount of research and your video has helped me to feel much more prepared and overall less nervous. Fingers crossed!
Thank you for your note. I am sending you all my best wishes for great news.
