What a stunner. I used to have Inca yellow S reg/1977 1500 Spitfire when i was a 20. Absolutely loved it. Some of the happiest days of my life. But I always wanted a MKIII GT6! I've been looking at prices of them for 6 months and looked at Hagerty RRPs. You mentioned £6 or £7K on this vid, Would that get me one that's able to be driven but will need £3-5K spending on it, to get it looking good and running well? Thanks a lot for your video. It's been interesting, fascinating, informative and above all very helpful. When I find one a decent one at the right price I'll join your FB group! Many thanks. Great video!!

I'm struggling to set up the carb on my spitfire would love to see a video on how to adjust the mixtures. My engine idles around 1k, anything below that is rough. As I rev the engine it becomes smooth after 2.5k. However when I open the the throttle fully and close it the idle rpm keeps dropping until engine stalls.

It's quite easy if you take your time, approach each section with caution and use the bonnet to line up. So I'd take maybe one wing off, line up with the bonnet and old valance, then fit the new wing to the bonnet edge and then remove the valance and crossmember, do the crossmember and fit the valance using the new wing and old wing to align then remove the remaining wing etc . Hope that makes sense!

I prefer to crimp brass bullets and then solder - as long as the cable hasn't corroded to the point where soldering is almost impossible. Modern bullet sleeves tend to be made from plated steel and have a habit of corroding really quickly when attacked by salty water. In the past the sleeves were made from brass which lasted a lot longer. Vaseline will help keep the water out and slow the corrosion process down.

The other two holes on the carb allow air in and out of the dash pot chamber. If the holes wernt there the dash pot would be operating with a presure differential and wouldnt want to move as freely. As you rev the engine and the piston in the dash pot moves up it needs to allow the air out of the dash pot. So as the piston lifts the air is expelled out and as the piston drops the air is drawn back in. It just keeps internal and external presures equal so that the desighned damping afect is achieved from the dash pot oil and spring.

Shame that you can't fit wise tires inside stock arcs, and dont mention fucking fiberglass parts they are bullshit, you want to ligthten aluminum parts and carbonfiber bonnet and boot. Back in the early 70's my sister purchased an Anglia for her University transport and I spent many happy hours dealing with the rot and various mechanical issues. At one point I painted the entire car using a product called Re-Paint which was a brush-on finish converting it from a faded orange to a trendy (at the time) beige.

Brilliant and informative video, thank you. I have been doing up my '72 Mk3 GT6 gradually over the last 6 years and everything you say I can relate with. In particular the aluminium rocker cover, that used to catch and caused a small dent in my bonnet, I have now replaced with an original steel one which fits perfectly. The other issue I have is the bubbling of rust at the bottom of the tailgate as you mentioned. If you know where I can buy a replacement tailgate I would be very interested. Apart from that, I love the GT6.. the looks.. the noise. Over the years it has actually been very reliable. The straight 6 engine is a delight. If you are thinking of buying one... just do it!

I used to work weekends at a stag specialist. One thing you havent mentioned is that towards the end of Mk1 production, they did introduce some things which also appear on Mk 2s at the time we used to refer to K and L reg cars as Mk1 and a half. You are spot on with the door latches on the B posts, there was no cross over with later MK1s having MK2 B post latches. Mk1s generally had A type OD but some of the later MK1 has J type ODs. While I was there, we had a prototype stag I think it s reg number started PVC and it was G reg. The really interesting thing about it was that it had been changed at the factory to be left hand drive OR right hand drive so that it could be presented to the home market and overseas market after swapping dashboards, pedal boxes etc. It also didnt use the stag V8, it had the straight 6 with twin carbs. The weight of the straight 6 engine suited the stag and the engine dropped straight into the engine bay and onto the mountings. I always thought that if I every had any issues with that stag engine , I would drop a triumph 2500S engine into it since the engine bays are almost identical...and the prototype proves it. Original good stag difs were like hens teeth 30 years ago due to the vents blocking, the diff blowing it seals and losing its oil or the aluminium diff back plate bolted to the steel diff carrier and rotting holes in the back plate and the diff losing oil. Although the crown wheel of the stag diff is the same ratio as one of the other triumphs ( I dont recall which one it is) the stag crownwheel is different in that it is broader in order to handle more power. I always suspected that they had wanted to give the stag more power but couldnt because of its cooling issues so the up rated diff made no difference. You mentioned export cars MK1 headrests and side marker lights. The export front bumper brackets were also different in that they had a plate welded over the top of them to reinforce them. I built my stag up to Australian spec and it was a MK 1 so it had those special headrests, the rear marker lights and the bumper brackets. It also had very rare stainless steel caps which fitted on the front and rear top corners of the door cards held onto the doors using small philips head self tappers. And yes!! stag bonnets dont rot but boot lids do! Oh ! one other thing! some MK1 home and export cars had an additional pressed steel ribbed cross brace in the doors presumably for side impact protection. The MK1 light switch also has a fog lamp position on it which the MK2 doesnt have.
