BLACK FEMALE TRAVEL 🧳 | A BOOKISH SATURDAY IN NYC | VISITING BOOKISH BOOKSTORES, CAFES, AND PARKS
Hi everyone,
Welcome to another vlog. We are NYC. One of my favorite cities in the world. We have my little one with me on this trip and it was such a beautiful time. The places we went were central park, Joe coffee company, Le Petit Cafe, Shopping, and McNally Jackson Downtown Brooklyn.
I do hope you guys enjoy this vlog as much as I enjoyed filming it. This is a very bookish vlog going back to my reading roots, because yall KNOW I love a nice pretty bookstore. If you are ever in the city and have a chance to visit any of these places. Please let me know or if you have other bookstores you recommend please let me know!
As always I do thank you for watching and I will see you next week with another upload!

    Glad you enjoyed visiting Edinburgh! The biggest bookshop in Scotland is the Waterstones in Glasgow, and the biggest second-hand bookshop in Scotland is Leakey's in Inverness. There's also a number of different book festivals in Scotland - the Literature Alliance Scotland has a list of them all.

      Omgosh! Thank you so much for this comment. I was always wondering when the festivals are so that is super helpful to have them all in a central location. I know for a fact I need to go to Glasgow, so many people left comments saying having to visit there. I have a work conference next June so that is when I planning to visit since it will be a long trip and I can really explore the area and surrounding cities.

    I’m enjoying seeing Edinburgh through your eyes- I’ve been twice( and it wasn’t enough). On my first trip we arrived at 7:30 AM and weren’t able to check into our B&B yet, but could leave our luggage there. So we bought a ticket for the city guided bus tour & were able to get off and see areas then get on another tour bus- a great way to fight jet lag & get an oversight of the city, it’s landmarks & history. On this trip we stayed at B&B on Princes St that was a 5th floor walk up! That was rough….on my next trip I stayed on St Giles St…much easier for a woman in her 70’s. Thank you for sharing your travel with us!😘 A Gram from MO

      I am so glad you enjoyed the guided tour! How long was your tour was it an all day thing or did it last a couple of hours? I am so glad you were able to visit twice. I am so much looking forward to my next trip. It was such a magical experience I loved every moment of it! Also 5 Floors is totally a lot! That is how many floors I had to walk up and I was worn out each time I got to my door. lol So going in the winter/colder months, I very much appreciated. I wasn't sweaty from the walking and stairs.

Glad you enjoyed your time here.

I title them this way, strictly for demographic and search engine optimization purposes, but to your point I totally agree. My favorite part about the UK (besides the water.The water is just sooo tasty) is I have not experienced any of these things while in Scotland or England. I can't speak for native blacks, but I can speak for my experience being an African American. The UK was the first place where I feel I am judged by my character and not by the color of my skin, which is why I come so often. It is an experience I truly cherish and I am so grateful for each and every time i step on UK soil. 🥰

    I want to travel solo but feel like everyone has their opinion on. I planned to move to scotland and i would like to go alone ❤❤❤

    • @TaylorsJourney
      @TaylorsJourney 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      People will have an opinion initially. Human beings are pack beings by nature, so to break off from your pack and explore solo is somewhat against human nature. The biggest thing that is off putting is without your pack, the perception is you lose your protection. With a little reframe regarding your social circle, their commentary on your plans to solo travel are more so their projection of worry for your safety. Try not to take it too personally. It is coming from a place of love. Fear is definitely intertwined with their commentary but love is the root. When you do go, because I have a feeling you will, each trip you take gets easier and easier. They will also be more supportive when they see your experience. I have another video on my channel discussing tips and tricks for being a woman solo traveling (th-cam.com/video/X2HqiLFWDO4/w-d-xo.html). I would start small, my first solo trip was within the States (my native country). I knew the country, the language, I had the same healthcare, I knew how the emergency system and transportation worked, culture, and customs. After this trip, I worked my way up to international travel. If I were you I would get my feet wet in an area you feel fully comfortable, so that is pretty much any city in your home country that you haven't been to and would like to go to. If you are based in the states, I highly Recommend NYC (even if you have been). If you can make it solo traveling in NYC, you can go anywhere in the world. Especially in Europe and Japan. In NYC only use the trains and buses for transport this way you would be completely prepped for European travel. Another thing you can do to prepare, while you are in your native country begin to spend more time alone. Take yourself on solo dates. Try going to dinner once a month or the theaters. Do activities you normally would need a group to do alone. This way you are much more comfortable with your own company. Some peoples' biggest fear when traveling is dinning alone. Mostly because it is something they have never done, so get some practice beforehand, so when you are on your trip you aren't uncomfortable with your own company. That is the easiest way to prepare prior to taking that first trip. I do hope one day you are able to move to Scotland truly! It is such a magical place, but honestly my favorite part about it is the people. They are so friendly and just have so much wisdom and culture they haven't hesitated to share with me over the past couple of months. If you do plan of visiting please comb though the comments on my video! They offered soooooo many places to visit and do. They talked about the best time of the year to come and festivals to attend. So please go through this so you have a rich experience when you do decide to come. I know this response is a novel but I wish you best of luck on your travel and cannot wait to hear about your first trip, so please do let me know when you go! ❤️

      @TaylorsJourney 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am still so bummed that i did not know this, but I am so happy I have the ability to return. When I come back in December, I am so excited to try Scotland's tap water. I have heard so many great things about it, so I am positive it won't dissappoint.

    • @oddbob8905
      @oddbob8905 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @TaylorsJourney yeah so many people just have reusable bottles rather than buying bottled. No need for filters as the waters not heavy or upsets your stomach. Just turn the cold tap on and let it run for 10seconds or so , that let's it get a bit more chilled then fill your cup / bottle and drink it. Same as you'll find drinking fountains in the streets in some places or train stations for refilling your bottles for free. So if your in Edinburgh waverly train station the free fountain is opposite platform 5 . Gd for anyone and the homeless to come fill their bottles. Only time scots/ brits will use bottle mainly is when we travel to other countrys like Spain, France Turkey etc because drinking tap water there can give an upset stomach . Only use the tap water for brushing teeth and will be wary of drinks with ice in it incase the ice is made from tap water, some places ,hotels etc and reviews will say if its packaged ice or made from tap water ice .

    • @TaylorsJourney
      @TaylorsJourney 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@oddbob8905 OMGOSH thank you for this! I am going to France in two weeks so I will stick to my bottled water for this trip. Also thank you for the Ice time, that is super helpful and to ensure I ask or study the dining spot to see if it is package ice over tap ice. I will totally use this advice on this trip. I would have never known if it wasn't for you, so thank you! 💞

    • @oddbob8905
      @oddbob8905 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @TaylorsJourney i can't guarantee every country or place is the same abroad/Europe and other countrys. It's just a general rule of thumb for majority of brits as we're not used to the different water in some place as it may be heavy water or more fluoride/chemicals etc so gives us upset stomachs, so only use the tap stuff for brushing teeth. As I say some places advertise it as pre bagged ice . Google/ reddit is handy for checking aswel. But defo scottish water and uk in general is regarded up there as some of the best . Can't mind the website/ body that done a review on water world wide for drinking. Sweeden or Switzerland was also up with some of the top water too lol. But yeah we mostly just run the tap for 10 secs and it gets colder if you run it for a bit and clears any water that may have settled for a bit in the pipes near the outlet. Hope you enjoy your next visit. Will keep a look out as I've only iust seen the video/channels and like seeing American takes on all things british/scottish

      @TaylorsJourney p.s will save you money on buying bottled water all the time. Can pick up a cheap reusable water bottle 500ml,750ml and 1litre ones from most supermarkets / shops etc . Asds ,tesco, morrisons ,sainsburys etc for as little as £1 in the homeware sections/aisle

    I really enjoyed watching your three Edinburgh videos, it's always nice seeing your local city through someone else's eyes. Sorry about the weather, but it adds a bit atmosphere to the city I think :) Someone commented that you should visit Roslyn Chapel in the little village called Roslyn, great little place made more famous by the book The Da Vanci Code by Dan Brown (very good book, well worth a read, was later made a film with Tom Hanks). If you want to visit that in December with whomever you are over with, I'd be more than happy to take you all. Or there are fairly regular buses that go to that village from Edinburgh and probably takes about 45 minutes. Edinburgh is very pretty in December (more rain though), we have a Christmas market at Princess Street that's very popular. I'll definitely check out more of your trips, maybe get some inspiration for myself. Although the idea of travelling alone fills me with fear, probably once I did it once I would be fine :)

    • @TaylorsJourney
      @TaylorsJourney 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for this comment! I didn't realize Roslyn chapel is the chapel from the Da Vinci Code. I loved these films! I definitely have to go now. I might have to take you up on the tour of the chapel! I honestly do not mind the rain. I am an avid reader so it doesn't bother me much. It definitely adds to the setting for sure. I totally want to visit the Christmas market. I have heard beautiful things about it so I am super excited for this as well. Lastly, in regards to solo travel. It can be scary at first. My first solo trip I was 25 and I went to Denver, Colorado. This trip changed my life. I would recommend a place within the UK that you haven't been too, that you want to go to, and you would feel comfortable and safe going to alone. After that first trip, you will be ready for more trips outside of the UK. I believe in you! I look forward to hearing about your future travels. ❤️

      Thank you for this comment. I haven't touched on racism and prejudice in my videos. I title them this way, strictly for demographic and search engine optimization purposes. To your point though, I can't speak for native blacks in the UK. I can however share what I have experienced growing up in the States versus the UK, and I have to admit. "Black folk go unnoticed for their race only a persons actions count here hope you loved your experience here in britain" This as an African American, (besides the water. lol idk whattttt is in the water but it is so so sooooo good. lolol) is my FAVORITE part of the UK. I remember my first time in London, in March of 2023. I had been there for 5 days. It was on my second to last day, I was in Camden, and I literally stopped mid sentence and told my partner. I haven't experienced any racism, discrimination, or prejudice. We were talking about what I enjoyed most on the trip, and this point hit me like a train. For the first time I felt unnoticed and like an actual person and my race didn't matter. Another thing I love is the lack of guns by police force, so even if an interaction is had on the basis of prejudice, a black person in the UK is much more likely to walk away alive. In the states, we are not so lucky. Because of my first experience in London, this is what made me want to start solo traveling especially in the UK. It is very easy for me because of the way I am treated. Thank you for touching on this, because this point hasn't been touched on by me, but it definitely is an important one, and what has made fall in love with the UK. ❤️

      Thank you! I am definitely trying to stay safe at home. I also thank you for your comments about traveling. I believe the world is huge and there is so much you can learn from different cultures and societies that allow you to use and develop intellectual honesty. I do know that traveling is a privilege. God has blessed me immensely, so that is why I like to share my experience. It can be hard to get outside of America because we are our own little world in the middle of two oceans. It can be pretty expensive to get from the east coast to the west coast of my own country ($400-600 USD) when you add in international travel, for someone who is a little inexperienced with travel booking can spend as much as $1500-1700 USD just to get the London. I think more Americans would love to travel, but just don't know where to start and factor that with prices of travel it is a huge deterrent from leaving our country. For any American reading this, just take that leap. There is a whole world outside of the states and your eyes will be opened in the best way, so if you are thinking about taking that leap of faith. Just take it. Take the trip. Gain the experience, you won't regret it. Take care Phil and thank you so much for engaging with my content! It truly warms my soul. I try to find other black female solo travelers that are like me so I can see their experience in other countries. Plus im in my 30s as well! I’m not the type to be going all out with the clothes or anything either and try to blend in as much as possible. Do you find it complicated at all dealing with currency exchange? So far I’ve been going to places that also use the USD. Figured that would be one less thing to worry about as a beginner solo traveler. My next trip I will have to convert though. I think I’m just making it more complicated in my head😂 Great video and great tips! -Tammy

    • @TaylorsJourney
      @TaylorsJourney 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So when it goes to currency exchange it honestly is easier than most people make it seem. There are multiple ways you can do it. You can get your currency exchanged at the airport when you land. I do this when I will be in a country for a LONG period ( a week or more). Some times public transport stations exchange currency or you can also find a currency exchange, but the most convenient in my experience has been the airport and the central public transport station. For example the central station in NYC is grand central. In London, its King's Cross, in Zurich its Zurich HB. The central station is also pretty safe, since youre incoming its safer to pull out cash when it is expected to pullout cash. It would be a little unsafe in the less central stations or outside of the airport. The other option is to yolo it and not exchange money. This is what I normally do since I travel usually Thursday - Monday, and I don't like to have a lot a cash on me when I am alone. When utilizing this method just swipe your card. VISA and Mastercard are pretty much accepted everywhere in the world. Debit Cards and AMEX are taken 75-80% of the time. So I have a travel card I use called the Chase Sapphire Preferred. This card is the queen b. It use it for ALL my travel and my AMEX as a back up. The Chase though, I secure points on travel related purchases and the points add up, since I travel so much, pretty much 1 out of 4 of my flights are free. The only caveat with the yolo method you do pay for transaction fees as a percentage of the cost of the purchase. An example a cup of coffee might be 7 Pounds in London. In USD 7 pounds is 8.85 USD. Your card will also charge you for this purchase like 30 additional cents for a transaction fee. For larger purchases say a hotel you booked in London and not ahead of time (Always try to book a head of time on an American travel site to avoid this). Lets say you spent 500 pounds. That would be 631.86 USD plus a transaction fee of like 15-20 dollars. So as long as you aren't making major purchases the transaction fees are pretty manageable. I have never looked back and felt overwhelmed by the transaction charges.

      @@TaylorsJourney thanks for the info! Im gonna have to check out that card once I get my money right. I am a cash budgeter right now while working on my finances so credit cards are not in the works for me lol. I will always be having money for travel though lol.

Also you can save yourself a bit of cash by not staying in the cities, there are loads of little quiet places just outside which are usually cheaper for accomodation, place I live is called Falkirk, where the Kelpies are, its 30/40 minutes from Glasgow and Edinburgh by train little less time by car, though a train journey only costs about £10 return, all the prices get hiked at this time of year because of summer months and tourists and that is worse in cities.

      Literally, thank you! I always take a lot of time selecting my music. It makes my heart so full to you hear you enjoyed the pieces I selected. I try to stick to piano pieces, which I feel can be a little tricky, at times, but I feel Edinburgh just fits the sound perfectly. It is truly a magical city and tried my best to find music that reflected that. 💕

      I have never heard of Inverness, or the Isle of Skye! How close are they in proximity to Edinburgh. Also how long is your trip!? As an Avid reader... I am so jealous you are going in October. October is my favorite month of the year, so I hope you have the bestttt trip

      @@TaylorsJourney You can get a train from Edinburgh to Inverness, but I think its 4-5 hours so if you are over for another long weekend it would take up a lot of your time. The Isle of Skye is beautiful, big mountains, beautiful scenery. One of the main attractions is the old man of storr which I saw for the first time a few years ago, bit of a steep hike to get to but well worth it. Both Inverness and the Isle of Skye are a bit far to travel on a long weekend trip if your main plan is to explore more of Edinburgh.

      @@TaylorsJourney Sure! That would be "Stauffacher" and "Orell Füssli". Basically most bookstores do have English books as well but these 2 are the biggest ones.

    If you're coming back, I recommend a quick, under 30 minutes, train trip to Linlithgow. Linlithgow Palace, the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots and a lovely little town - it has a bookshop😁 Stirling is also well worth a visit, great old town & Castle. If you can a trip round some of the Lochs & Glens of the Trossachs is a great day out.

      Thank you for this tip! I will definitely be back. I will be there at the latest this time next year for work. I will start the trip in Glasgow but will probably plan to stay an extra week/ Week and a half to explore other parts of Scotland and spend more time in Edinburgh. So I am super looking for to this trip, now that I have sooo much feedback and new places to explore. Thank for you tip regarding Linlithgow! And the for providing the history about Mary Queen of Scots. I am obsessed with bookstores, if you could provide the name for me. I will definitely try to work it in my travel plan especially with it only being 30 min train ride from Edinburgh. In regards to the other places to mentioned: Stirling and Lochs & Glens of the Trossachs; how far are they in relation to Edinburgh. I truly want to maximize my trip the next time I come and to see as much as a physically can. If I can also work them in, I would love to visit these places as well.

      @@TaylorsJourney The Bookshop in Linlithgow is Far From The Madding Crowd. Linlithgow is on the main line between Glasgow and Edinburgh so an easy fit. There are a bunch of tour companies offering day trips out to the Trossachs, I don't know enough to recommend one but there are some leaving both Glasgow and Edinburgh to include Stirling Castle, the Trossachs & Loch Lomond. I will recommend going on one that goes via Dukes Pass to Aberfoyle because that road is nuts, I used to go down it on my motorbike - twisty! Not a huge fan of the Outlander tours but a visit to Culross is well worth it on it's own. If you fancy a coastal day out you can get a bus from Edinburgh up to Anstruther a beautiful harbour town with the best fish and chips. It takes about 2 1/2 hours or you can book a day tour for about £99 that goes all the way up to St Andrews, check Visit Scotland for that one.

      @@alisonrodger3360 I do not know how I missed this comment! But thank you for providing the transportation recommendations in addition to the locations! Like you have made my travel planning so much easier. I have had some time to plan in the meantime and it looks like I will be back for short trip in December, where I can do two days in Scotland and two days in London. I know it will be much colder and most things during this time will be Christmas themed. I am definitely planning to stay in Edinburgh while I am in Scotland because I am obsessed. My longer trip where I will spend roughly 8-10 days in Scotland will be next June. This trip, I will for sure be starting in Glasgow and it will be warmer so I can enjoy the costal areas more. So I know this is a lot of information, but I do hope I can find fun things to do in Edinburgh during the christmas season!
