they say making living doing art is 50% art and 50% business. This is extremely mistaken. Art is 90% business and 10% skill in Art. You can create quality on par with Monet and Sargent, but since you don't have the name/reputation, It means nothing except to the 2% of population that can somewhat feel/recognize it and 0.01% that can truly value it. Stereotypes of starving artist exists even today when exposure is 1000x easier than before, is because money and economies functions on business principles naturally...period. Good marketers with poor skill in art will out earn the best artist with poor skill in business any day of the week. You want to create your passion work? do it, make it into content and get followers, viable strategy, but still a lot of marketing/social media/business accruement needed. You want to quickly sell something? You create what the market want, not what you want. This is the subjective real world, unless you already nurtured A lot fans, buyers don't care what you think, it's all about what they think. And what they think and how they value are much more easily influenced by marketing strategies and packaging, relative principle, contrast principle etc. I dunno why ppl still need this spelt out for them when there are black squares and banana taped to wall and pixel by pixel transferred image that a high schooler can do, all selling for obscene amount of $$$ than your 20 year trained traditional fine art that you had to draw 1000 live anatomy sessions to learn. Marketing and Packaging people -_-

I have recently picked up the brush again and now I am getting close to retirement and would like to explore some avenues for me to sell my art work. Having your own website is only worth it if you can drive traffic to it through social media. Gonna need some kind of Instagram, Twitter or Utube following or else you'll have a traffic-less website not even worth its hosting fees.

the most realistic video about this topic. one day i spent hours and days to create an artwork. i published it on etsy. and i received 4 scam messages via etsy. social media can be a good way but in the beginning its so overwhelmed. cause espaecially instagram algoritm works horrible. unfortunately i realized something on instagram tht only nudity takes attention and traffic to the accounts. this algoritm shoul be changed!!!!

Even if you start your own website there's still power and control by big tech. You'll pay a monthly fee plus whatever social media and Google want to charge you to run traffic.

Hustle beats talent any day, unfortunately. Doesn't matter how talented you are if you're not good at self promotion your work will die with you.

I think we all know that selling through an online platform is costly, people steal images from these platforms and sell prints and copies on places like Etsy. Galleries that are not primarily serving the elite can't afford brick an mortar anymore. What we have left are outdoor art shows (if you can get it) and online platforms, and hundreds have popped up since the pandemic, if you can't make art make a business selling other peoples art. Artists spend most of their energy making art, that is different than being a creative business person. Artists hate business, they have a lot of issues with insecurity, haggling with people, selling themselves. That is why artists have always depended on representation. The internet has created millions of "artists" some real, most not. It has created millions of thieves. It is tricky having a website, it can turn into a Pinterest board for thieves. The problem with You Tube is people who are not artists give away any little sweet spot we find to create an original space for ourselves.

USE online galleries in your favour to get the best of both, use the fact they have a lot of traffic to divert buyers to your own site. I'll list work on saatchi as 'unavailable' but then have people come find me via social media or email then buy the art directly

I can't recommend selling through a local gallery because my first experience with a local gallery ended with me very unhappy with that gallery. I was shocked that they charged 50% commission. Maybe all galleries do that but it did seem like highway robbery. Then the gallery owner did what she wanted with my stuff and some was damaged when she dragged it and other artists work to a park to an art show that didn't sell anything. And by damage I mean one of my pieces was broken in half and she would not compensate me for it. And the one big thing that soured me on her gallery was it was very difficult to get any money for what she did sell. She was not available when I called the gallery to find out if anything sold. If something did sell, I had to go to the gallery without telling her I was coming. And when she did pay me, the check would bounce and I had to go through pinning her down to get my money. Worst gallery owner ever.
