  • A personal story on rejection as an artist. Watch advanced training on How to Become a 6+ Figure Artist: marthamayronson.com/aa-applic...
In this video I’m sharing some much needed art career advice by addressing rejection and how I PERSONALLY handle it. I frequently get emails and DMs from professional artists as well as emerging artists telling me about their knockbacks in their art careers and how they want to give up because others in the art world have put them down. If this is you, I want you to know that every artist will experience rejection at one point or another in their art career so learning how to deal with rejection as an artist is key to becoming a successful artist.

I recently left a gallery/artist studio situation because of the politics. The board which had multiple artists hand picked by the current president had always made what I thought were totally arbitrary decisions without proper study of the various situations. One of the board members told me I should stay because he had seen too many artist go down hill after they left, but since it does not matter how much I sell or do not sell as I do this because I love to do art I am staying busy with three local art groups. It is a hard lesson to realize I am not in the main stream group any more, but I am still here and I am having a opening this weekend. Life goes on...

Handling rejections and learning how to get over them is an absolute must! The sooner one learns it, the better! I once had an art teacher who said - you can't jump any higher than your bum - which felt pretty rude at the time as he was commenting on my painting skills but afterwards I realized he was so right - we are only as strong or as capable as we are at any given moment but we can keep on jumping towards our dreams and eventually get there 🎉

Hi Martha, great story, thank you. I'm much further down the road in years and it's ME who I find myself trying to prove wrong! Self sabotage being my downfall. So two fingers to me , onward and upward! 😅

Martha, thank you for sharing this insightful video on handling rejection in the art world. It's a topic that many artists, including myself, can relate to and find comfort in knowing we're not alone in facing rejection. Your tips are incredibly helpful, and I particularly appreciate the emphasis on reframing our perspective and building resilience.
It's refreshing to hear about your personal experiences with rejection, as it's a reminder that even successful artists have faced setbacks. Your honesty and openness are truly inspiring; sharing these experiences can help others overcome their struggles.
I'm looking forward to more of your content and future updates. Keep up the great work, and thank you once again for sharing your advice and experiences with us!

Thank you for your story Martha. I was rejected from my local art school and had to go back to college for another year. I had the satisfaction of rejecting their offer because a top London school had accepted me instead. The artist life teaches you to never give up. It's a long, slow game and if success were easy it wouldn't be worth the effort.

Totally recognise that feeling! I was 14 when it happened. Didn't have the presence of mind to call a friend, or mention it to anybody. Well done you for being so resilient!

Thank you Martha, I can recognise myself in your story pretty well and the feeling is sometimes still present. Most often the lack of time to get things done in the studio and to be a good business manager at the same time, especially when I still have my part time job three days a week and five kids. Things are going soooo slowly.
Thanks and hopefully see you soon in your next video.

You have Slade, Goldsmiths, which aren’t UAL. The Slade is the most prestigious and most difficult art school to enter if London is your city of choice.
Route: foundation course / reference / grade / portfolio / application / interview. The number one factor is your work, what is in your portfolio and how you can intelligently discuss it. Your foundation tutor will usually hold a Masters or higher qualification and is usually very good at guiding you in terms of your University choices.
Not understanding that the RCA is a post-graduate institution and that open days are nothing to do with rejection or acceptance to a University course suggests that perhaps your foundation course wasn’t communicating as well as it should have been.
