Hi all, I'm Kevin Liang a USTA 4.5/UTR 8 tennis player based in the Bay Area. I'm documenting my journey on TH-cam as an NTRP 4.5 player trying to improve to become USTA 5.0+ and reach UTR 10 (one day).
This time I play against a rival from a competing highschool back in my highschool tennis days, Ben. Ben and I used to hit quite often and we even played each other a few times before during highschool season. I won both our previous encounters, however it's been over 8 years since we played a match against each other. While visiting home during the holidays, we decided to play a match, except... my left wrist was injured during this time and I couldn't swing with my left hand without pain. So instead of being smart and taking time off, I decided to try hitting with a one hander...
Let's see if Ben can take his revenge and embarrass me on my own channel!
Hope you guys enjoy this video!

Just to clarify: at the beginning of the season Kyle was an UTR 10 with low confidence based on the fact that he beat UTR 9s, 10s and even 11s when he was actively playing tournaments. Because of his only recent play being wins against UTR 8s, his rating also dropped to an 8 also not 100% confidence. - 👀 Looking to improve your tennis?👀 Get SwingVision at a Discount! swing.vision/r/kevin 📝 Summ...

Finally saw the videos in MD😊
Are foot faults not called in these UTR rated matches? Hassan foot faults essentially ever serve.
He is short all the time barely making it behind the baseline. No topspin. Yes it is hard too generate power but if you step in to the ball and take the net you’ll destroy him. Like you’ll win 50% on the attack already and than the next points on the smash/volley. Like for him to consistently lobb you perfectly is just not likely. If he managed too moon balls a lot closer to the baseline things would be a lot more difficult since you would have to try to go for very short angles, but he does not, he makes slices and coming up short A LOT. Be aggressive here; left foot forward, bend the knees and hit the corners or straight middle. By all means it may be a weakness, but that is why we practice.
How convenient that the phone died before I won my second game in the last set👀. But definitely by the end of the first set I ran out of steam and couldn't keep up the footwork with the groundstrokes following suit. Was fun will try again if the opportunity arrives.
Yeah going to pin this to make sure everyone knows you got those 2 games. Good playing with you man! :) Hope to play you again soon.
You've done some great videos but videos like this are a v gimmicky and not really worth watching. I stopped watching after 4 mins
Appreciate the feedback though. Hopefully my next few videos will be more of your speed :) But would be great to know what made this match more gimmicky than my other videos! This was like many of my other videos where I just play a friend or another local tennis player. No stakes.
Eh, he hurt his wrist so he’s playing modified because he has to not necessarily because he wants to. Still some great hitting! i think this match is valuable cause it goes to show how many tennis players there are out there that don’t play league and are still playing at a very high level.
It’s okay Ben. He kicked my butt too haha yall are in for a treat seeing my beat down😂 But dude!!! Ben has improved A LOT since high school
yo! from CA summer camp?
@ yessir!!!! Such a small world man!
My broken left wrist is still healing so I was thinking of hitting one-handed, too. I can do it if I am comfortable and not rushed, but that happens only rarely in a match. But, when I hit it solid, I feel I can hit it as hard as my forehand. Anyway, unfortunately, it's too cold and wet for me to get out there and hit. Oh, well.. Well done for you to get the win under the circumstances! Your one-hander did start looking better in the second set, but your two-hander is very sweet. I hope you don't overdo it with your two-hander and end up doing more damage, though... I think you are doing the right thing trying to come into the net and finish off points in a partial unserious match. You never know but perhaps getting some experience doing that will pay dividends down the line...
Thank you! The left wrist has been feeling much better these days :)
How common is this? I just broke a bone in my non dominant wrist 6 weeks ago and because I'm so tennis addicted, I've continued to play tennis and have just been hitting 1 handed back hands.
KL dropped another banger 🙌🔥🔥
Appreciate it :)
Centennial west arena championship court. Love it!🎉
2nd comment
If you could make that shot consistent, there's an easy way to beat Alcaraz or Sinner LOL
Should I give up on hitting a one hander?
Brings back memories of me learning OHB in high school after breaking my wrist on a footwork drill. You probably need to hit at least 1000 OHB's before you get comfortable with it. If you are going to play in a tournament soon and your left wrist is still busted, I say go for it! You might want to mix in slices as well to take some pressure off.
That was definitely out though
I approve of the drop 🤭
Love how all these 3.0s giving tennis tips 😂
Jack sock grip
Nice video! I'm a bit of an amateur and wondering what the purpose of the racket spin is after the forehand? Should I be spinning my racket and how many time? Thanks!
4 times exactly any more you’ll be late to the swing and any less it won’t look cool. But in all seriousness it’s a pointless nervous habit. Don’t do it
@ Haha ok thanks! You have a great forehand!
You can always just claim you broke all his service games as he's consistently foot faulting 🙂
Hi Kev, i noticed you stay so back with your torso during the forehand execution, keep pushing in front could help you to give more power to the ball easily, cheers from italy ;)
What surprises me every time when I watch amateur tennis from Amercia is that you allways play so rushed. I think becaues of a lot players are trying to get pumped for adrenaline or something. the 5.0 guy can be way better if he keeps his calm and not blast every ball caus he wants to be so agressive. The points mostly are won by the opponent making a mistake. In Europe we tend to play way more focussed on control and thechnique than power. The speed is nog coming from crushing every ball. Its the kinetic chain that doesnt need to be with full power/ muscles.
Best strategy, drop shot and lob
i will add to the comments suggesting change your grip. please
Forehand is insanely goated bro 😎
why are you hitting and running past the ball? you should hit the ball and then stop straight away pressing back to the middle. Your footwork needs work. not about speed
You're plenty fast: you just need better defense. All of your defensive shots are short. Try hitting deeper, or throw up a deep lob. The lob will give you time to re-center. Then you can drop shot him lol!
Bro felt like Murray 😉
bro chnage that grip asap, its holding you back massively. you have just go semi and stick to it, in 1 month itll feel so much better
Nice man! What camera are you using to do that video?)
Just an iphone :)
It's so western, it's almost eastern...
Respect to hasan. He is a slicer but not a moonballer. Just imagine if he adds the moonball to his arsenal.
dangerous
First, I love your backhand very smooth and fluid. Secondly, I love that you're willing to play these kinds of guys. Especially as you're on a journey to reach a specific level. I'm 48. + I never figured it out. I briefly reached a 5.0 level + I think Hassan probably would have beat me 7 out of 10 times. your volleys weren't on, but I think you should hit short angles to open the court up and take pressure off yourself. You played most of your balls pretty deep. Maybe use your topspin with more angles versus Deep to draw him into the alley. Then your shots don't have to be as great to get past him. Run it back and post! Good luck
You will lose power on your forehands because you're leaning back at contact.
he has to lean back cause he's playing nearly a Hawaiian grip. insane.
Crazy grip bro i tried it so hard nice drop shot btw😁
why are you tossing soo far behind your head, losing all the power..
Yeah I agree, been trying to fix it but in matches/sets it reverts a lot of times
My nemesis plays like this. I finally figured it out and beat him. Now I know. Here's my $.02. You're giving him tons of time with your high top spin balls. That's partially why he can get to everything. Hit flatter then top spin when you need it. Definitely get better with overheads but like you said, sometimes let it bounce and place it strategically. He's using less energy because his balls take longer to travel over the net, so he stands still and rests. Just hit flatter shots to power them past him more. And develop your own backhand slice (the easier of the two for me) and just learn to build a point against a guy like this. We all struggle with this type of guy though.
I don’t understand your grip man 😅
It looks like full western grip.
@@FUsheK Sometimes i don’t understand it either
I despise those junk baller. I don't care if i loose, I rather smash the ball into the air than hitting with them. All they do is either slice or freaking lob.. We have one in our group too. I hate to hit with him. I can beat that guy, but find no joy of the match. I get more joy from a match against a player with good fore/back/net play even i loose. If i want i can junk the ball all day too... slices all day.. but what's the point??? If we wanna play tennis for fun with tennis racket, then let's play freaking tennis. Otherwise play pingpong or pickle ball and slices it all you want. just saying..
Bro thought it was life or death 😂
guys named 'Bjorn' are just good at tennis...
not sure if you know tennis youtuber Winston Du he is 4.5 as well. not sure if any plans to play him? would be interesting to see.
Oh yeah would love to play him one day
44degrees and grey and can be. Outdoor tennis in the PNW. During a changing over "hey, you watch any youtube tennis creators" ... Sheepish reply "Kevin?" "Ya both, samamish and bay area."
Haha that’s awesome
At least all that running made for a nice short! Good control by your opponent
So... I've been playing several really good slice heavy players the last few years...I love it! The number one thing I can say is to always have fun and enjoy the match... I can't impress this enough... These guys are going to try and bring you in and push you back... different than the left to right game you are used to... Players like Hassan... are really really good at bringing you to the net..."NOT ON YOUR TERMS" ... their slice stays low, is consistent and becomes offensive in the opposite way that topspin shots do... a slice shot that lands right at the service line... in the middle of the court had you hitting weak approach shots... and then your "decision" is to follow it in and get lobbed or retreat and recover out of position to deep no man's land... Does that thought cross your mind in this match??? I think you played really well... and if you had made every overhead and volley as a winner... you would have won easily... But... slicers are kind of the opposite from conventional players ... at least for me... as far as strategy is concerned... Keep in mind though...you can usually change direction without getting hurt too much on these players... because they aren't hitting with pace... and also some of the slice players backhand is not their weakness... or the shot that hurts you most... he got a lot of misses from you on his backhand... it has good action and he seemed to be able to hit it short with pace... One thing that helped me... was thinking of that middle of the court slice that is low... as their equivalent of your approach shot... that's how he is initiating his offense... Don't think for a second that unconventional players aren't strategic... He is pulling you in to volley frequently when you haven't created an advantage situation for yourself... getting an error or an easy shot to hit a lob... a lot of these guys are running you less left and right... and more forward then back... an excellent tactic... IMO... Three things to focus on number one... 1. He is actually taking time away from you by forcing you into this weak net position... especially when your first volley is consistently not hit..."right back at him" And punch it a but to give pace or even swing volley to give it to him high... try and hit him... that's the best way to turn the table and immediately make him have to react quick and have to make a quick decision... these guys live to run down weak volleys especially ones that bounce low... they are going to slice the ball they like it low... Number two... 2. normally you approach down the line... because you got a short ball and you blast it straight ahead and the opponent will stretch to hit it... hopefully with the weak sauce... Not in this situation that he is manufacturing, though... He is pulling you in to the net when you aren't ready to come in yet... So one tactic that I use is to hit a good high bouncing topspin shot right down the center of the court and come in for volley behind it... If he flossess your teeth with the ball on this you might re-think this one... but mostly these slicers just slice it right to you down the center... I'm sure you already know from your own experience... it's pretty tough to hit passing angles from the mid court behind the baseline... but if he does... see if he can keep doing it... most of us can't... Last... 3. When you volley a slice the ball naturally backspins into your strings... causing your normal volley stance to give it a trajectory straight into the tape of the net... yes, slice shots dip off of your racquet if you try to play them with a neutral racquet face and don't negate the spin...by giving it your own...or what I like to do... make sure you bend your knees and get low... and punch heavily through the ball with slight backspin... I use this punch volley when I hit right back at them... my right back at you play, if you will... But if I get a chance to end the point on the first volley use the standard slice volley... But don't just don't let the ball hit the strings on your racquet... because you have programmed yourself to volley topspin shots... and the slice will seek the tape... and that is his play... he is used to people giving him points like this... When the ball comes back right at him... his lob will not have as much touch... The other option all together... is to try and recover back to the baseline... Which you can do by hitting a looper cross court... "NOT EASY TO DO " while charging in to a slice that has no pace and stays low... so what I learned is to anticipate his next shot... He is trying to pull you in to the net to either hit the next ball either deep or as a lob... that's his tactic... So when I want to stay aggressive but am not ready to volley I will hit the ball right to him with no pace... I will recover to the service line... not the baseline... In other words... I'm going to volley... but I will stop just short of the service line and in traditional volley position... except I will stay maybe two feet behind the line... when he tries to lob you... hit the over head right at him or down center court.. but DON'T miss the over head... Just keep it in your head... the whole time... don't over run my volley position... You are fast... and against this player... your speed works against you... he is looking to lob... and you are programmed to volley against someone who will pass with pace... better volley position is deep against him... and it will make the overheads easier... when you don't over run your volley position See, once you adopt the mindset of... I'm playing a slicer... awesome! I get to practice my overheads and smash punch volleys... it gets really fun!!! And isn't that why we play? Watching this match... was fun for me... thank you for posting... honestly if you had finished at the net... 60% of the time... and put away all of your overheads... the match is yours... nice playing both of you!!!
Work with different coaches on volleys and overheads. People are shaped different and different coaches have different ideas in what works best. Keep working with different coaches on volleys until you see improvement. On high back hand volleys I like to shift to an eastern backhand grip. If your forehand volley is popping up, try turning your shoulders more to back up the contact point, it may help you.
I think you're closer to a 5.0
I would suggest you consider trying stop spinning your racquet during the points - it is a bad habit that reduces your prep time and time to switch grips
You should work on your serve plus 1 you could have won a lot of free points by being more aggressive attacking the return
you forgot to change your grip when hitting a forehand
you are awesome
Your net game and serves are shite. You also play way too conservatively.
