Hi Jeffrey, read about you in the Straits Times (Singapore), so I looked for your channel. I face Cantonese seniors in my volunteer work and feel sad I can’t communicate properly with them. So here I am.

It's like using the word "shook" by the white population with a connotation of being just funnier version of "shocked". But it's just the AAVE word for "shocked", which is precisely following the AAVE grammar, so using the word "shook" by a white person implies certain attitude. The same ppl who talk about cultural appropriation are also constantly using this word. Same with "woke", which is a past participle, just like "awaken" in the white version. And it's quite dystopian given that both languages are often a source of hate towards their speakers. It's very dystopian.

LOL: I remember a few years ago in Hongkong, I was sitting in a minibus and the driver of the bus was talking to someone on his mobil. It was obviously he has debt and the other guy on the phone want his money back. In this conversation, he used alot of those swear words, so every two words was such one. He asking alot about the mothers wellbeing from the other guy on the line.

Hi Jeffrey, Thank you for creating this channel. I’m 4th generation N American Chinese. I know some Mandarin but I miss hearing Cantonese where I live now compared to growing up in San Francisco. I find it an affectionate sounding language and want to improve. 🙏

INTRODUCTION BREAKING DOWN A TEXT Different pronunciation for same character [3:00] JYUTPING [4'] Syllable can be broken into 3 parts [5'] POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF SYLLABLE PARTS [7:30] 聲母: sing1 mou5 = onset 韻母: wan5 mou5 = final 字調: zi6 diu6 = tone 韻腹: wan[6] fuk1 = Nucleus 韻尾: wan[6] mei5 = coda

1) It would be nice to see all the terms and components broken down visually in a family tree like graphic in order to get a good overview of all the concepts and how they fit together. It'd make a nice instagram graphic. Like for the text breakdown into sentences, characters, punctuation etc. And another for the syllable breakdown into intial, final (nucleus & coda), tones etc. and then even one breaking down tones into the 6. 2) Might not be accurate to say that Cantonese traditionally has 9 tones? I've heard it expressed as 九聲六調 or 9 sounds & 6 tones. 3) I like the videos, as it introduced some concepts and terms that are rarely talked about in other place, even with jyutping. However, the videos overall is quite abstract & analytical and probably intimidating for people, especially [with the title of] a first lesson. It'd help to put these examples more into context & use chracters hat would be commonly encountered early on 4) I wouldn't label this exactly as a language structure, it's more of a gross writing structure & phonetic breakdown 5) i really liked how you recommend learning Cantonese by the smallest unit of meaning, rather than by individual characters

I have recently come to realise that I've been mispronouncing many words that start with the gw sound. I end up pronouncing them with the g sound instead. An example is that I pronounce the word 過 like 個. I think the reason is that my first languages/dialects are Toisan and Xinhui. These two particular words are pronounced the same in the other dialects that I know.

I mainly want to learn Cantonese better because in the last few years, I rediscovered and started listening to the Cantonese songs I knew as a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's. My mother asked me to find some Chinese music for her and when searching for them, I realised I still enjoyed listening to them. My favourite singer at the time was Sam Hui and I was able to find a bunch of his songs along with a bunch of others I used to listen to. I also started listening to the songs my mother wanted which is from Paula Tsui, Michael Kwan and Teresa Teng. When I was young, I did not understand the songs. Now, with the help of internet tools, I am able to partially translate some of these songs and be able to learn to sing them myself. I've learned dozens of songs and through just learning how to sing, I found myself increasing my literacy. I also feel that as I learn more Chinese (mostly Cantonese) songs and gain more literacy, I feel I am connecting more with my ethnic culture more. Living in Canada, I am still somewhat immersed in the Chinese culture. I find that being part of both my ethnic Chinese culture and Canadian culture, I appreciate both a lot more.

I just found your TH-cam channel. I'll watch through your videos first. I don't have an Instagram account. I'm generally not a fan of Facebook (who owns Instagram) as they screw with the feed in a way that bothers me. If I like your videos enough and want more, maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and get on Instagram.

Hi, there. I came across a reference to you in another TH-cam video about Cantonese. I am a second generation Canadian. My parents are Chinese. My father is Xinhui and my mother is Toisan. Those are the dialects I first spoke. I then went to Chinese school where I learned Cantonese. Living in Canada, I pretty much just speak English (in my part of the country) and only speak Chinese when I was still living at home. Lately, I've taken a much greater interest in learning Chinese. I have been listening to Chinese songs that I used to listen to a lot when I was a child. I never understood those songs as my Chinese vocabulary was very limited. Now with the help of the Internet and computers (and my mother-in-law who speaks Cantonese) I am able to understand those songs. Translating songs has piqued my interest in learning more Chinese than I already know. I can speak fluent Cantonese, Xinhui and Toisan, but my vocabulary is very limited. I mostly speak Xinhui with my parents and since I met my wife have spoken more Cantonese with my in-laws. My literacy is also very poor. I did go to Chinese school, but retained very little of what I learned as I did not read much Chinese at all outside of Chinese school. I really want to improve my literacy in reading Chinese. Learning how to sing Chinese songs and translating them has improved my literacy somewhat. I look forward to watching your channel.

Can you please do a video talking about tones? Especially differentiating between the two rising tones (4&5) and the 3 flat tones (1,4,6)? Would highly appreciate that since Cantonese resources aren't really that widespread compared to Mandarin:/
