It has been a while and I'm so glad to be back! The last four months have been a whirlwind of tasks ad emotions, but Chase and I are now happily married! And I cannot thank you all enough for the patience you have shown while I took this time off.
But we are back and ready for the fall gardening season here in the southwest desert. I couldn't think of a better way to get back into it than to give you an old fashioned garden tour!

    We too are in S AZ, we have over 100 mesquite on our property. During the timid seasons we harvest the branches for the goats, which keep the trees in nice shape. We also have the thornless variety, which we greatly prefer. Those thorns can go right up through a shoe. My neighbor almost lost his entire foot from a mesquite thorn infection in his toe. They had to remove the toe. We've never bothered harvesting the pods because the countless variety of ants always seem to get to them first

    Just processed some Rainbow Ranger from Meyers and 10-12 weeks required, they are a little timid, mine were 4-1/2 to 7 lbs at 11 weeks.. I get Freedom Ranger and 12-14 weeks you get a comparable chicken, the birds are calm and friendly. Plucking in December with their winter coat was a little challenging but they were exposed to some really cold weather.. I was not a fan of Ross-308 CornishX

    After spending a ton of cash on composted bagged stuff, mostly yard waste; I did get chickens. Now I'm running Freedom Ranger pullets and a flock of layer hens. You mentioned PermaPasturesFarm and his method is mostly compost production. I'm looking at turning out some compost to feed the birds, the ladies would prefer to scratch & peck than eat bags of feed. BTW: I found a better price on layer feed from a mill. I'm looking for ways to reduce input costs and I give some eggs away with honey sales. The compost produced is far more valuable than a few bags of shavings and some feed to offset the cost of eggs produced. Also raised 50 broilers and 3 turkeys making the $$ spent have some real value.

    💫😇SewhathistorisabullandwellseamoreacH😇💫 A mesquite tree that has been grafted with branches from 40 different types of stone fruit is known as the "Tree of 40 fruit". Mesquite trees are commonly propagated by grafting a desirable variety onto a seedling rootstock. Grafting is a popular method for changing the varieties of fruiting trees, such as apples, cherries, pears, and peaches. Rootstocks and scions from different species in the same genus are usually compatible. Mesquite trees are small trees or shrubs that produce edible fruits called legumes, beans, or pods. They are native to dry areas in the Americas and are a signature plant of the South Texas Plains. Mesquite trees are also known for their hard wood, which is used for fuel and lumber.

    Great Video.. I think i do almost all the things you suggest but i also have used carpet which seems to work really good. I am in the low desert in AZ. Our last summer (2024) was brutal. So much just didn't survive; most of it all cooked on the vine. The one interesting thing is that the squash bugs didn't seem to like the heat either cause i found very few! Thank you Megan!

    I didn't realize your cats made so much trouble for you in the garden. Our cat will only jump in if there's bare soil. Once the wood mulch goes on top he pretty much leaves everything alone and keeps the birds, grasshoppers and any mouse that might try to sneak in, away from the garden.

    Eucalyptus is a tree. Fast growing, messy. One of the fastest growing trees in the world. Their trunks can become massive, easily 4 to 6 feet wide. Their favorite past time is blowing over in storms.

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hahaha ok thanks for the info!

    • @sheepslinky
      @sheepslinky หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok, so yes, you can prune a eucalyptus into a bushier shape and harvest from it continually by coppicing it. Basically, you cut it down right above the soil line and it will make vigorous new shoots from the remaining trunk. These will grow upward until they are the right height. At that point, you chop it back again. Look up coppicing and pollarding. These techniques were used throughout history to produce harvests of poles and firewood. If this is done right, the tree will actually live a long life if it is cut and harvested every few years. Most people hate the look of a coppiced tree, but it's not done for aesthetics.

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm หลายเดือนก่อน

      @sheepslinky haha thank you for the informative response. I have heard of coppicing and pollarding but never took the time to look into it since I can't grow any trees over here in sugar sand 🤣. But I'll definitely look into it thank you!

    • @sheepslinky
      @sheepslinky หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thefiresidefarm that's what I'd do. Eucalyptus really don't transplant well and you can harvest the poles to make essential oil or potpourri or whatever.

    Hello from from cold fall Milwaukee Wisconsin! We don't have mesquite trees here but I was born in Laredo Texas right on the Texas/Mexico border where Mesquite trees are forests along with cactus and 2 other brushes and wildflowers all over for as far as the eye can see. Its actually so easy to get lost on a 50 acre plot if you've never been there before! Migrants crossing the border often get separated and lost and seek help instead of trying to get to their destination. Some sadly even perish in the hot Texas sun and their skeletons are discovered by Ranchers or hunters every single year. Mesquite trees are so abundant that its the wood used for cooking, firewood and furniture! Some very beautiful furniture can be made and last for hundreds of years indoors! My 75 yr old father prefers using mesquite trees with a lot of red color for grilling. I've heard that Mesquite trees have more grains per square in than The Mighty Oak Tree and that Mesquite trees wear chain saws out faster than most other trees when sawing. Mesquite trees can cover gardens enough to let them grow without letting tomatoes get their skin sun scorched by the Texas sun along with other plants while adding nitrogen fertilizer to the ground! The often say Smell is our #1 sense for our memory to remember and I have to say that there is something sexy of a bbq pit starting when the Mesquite wood is starting to burn and the smell gets on your clothes. Its like smelling like a real Cowboy if you ask me! It always reminds me when of when I was a child and grandpa or grandma/mom/dad would start the grill and the very beautiful fragrant aroma of the mesquite would remind me that it's gonna be time to eat carne asada with flour and corn tortillas with guacamole and salsa beans and rice and Coke lol honestly! lol mesquite trees are so very beautiful when trimmed accordingly and very ornamental and look like giant bonzai trees kinda too! Thank you for the Video and I look forward to seeing your other videos! God Bless!!
