So, I am Just A Guy that is a big believer in the Linux community. I am NO expert. I am a user. I do work in the tech industry but not as a tech expert.
The question is why would someone who is not a network engineer, not a coder and generally unqualified start a channel about different Linux distros, installation and reviews.
I think there are people like me that just don't know where to start or have the confidence to try something new. After all, people complain about how there system crashes but very few will try something completely different.
Years ago, I was tired of the slow responsiveness of my PC and the 3 crashes per day when I decided to try Linux Mint.
Holy crap!! It was like having a new PC. Very quick. Very snappy and devoid of crashes.
If I can switch, you can too. Try it. You might like it.
Thanks for stopping by.

Debian, Linux and the xz security problem
I followed everything in part 2 until the sql piece. I keep receiving this error with MariaDB installed. $ sudo mysql_secure_installation sudo: mysql_secure_installation: command not found Any suggestions?
I had just about settled for Marktext, even though it wasn't EXACTLY what I was looking for. And all I want to do is edit markdown files. I don't need it for my notetaking application, because I have been using Microsoft OneNote for that for 20 years. Anyway, I am DEFINITELY going with Zettlr now. It is everything I was looking for, plus a whole lot more. The UI looks amazing! Thank you so much for this video. P.S. I like your video style. Just straightforward, with no wasted time, and at a pace where someone who doesn't already know all of it can follow you.
This is exactly the video I was looking for but the content is still beyond me as a fairly new Linux user. Hate to admit that but it is. The btfrs file system and software swap and a few other things that are extras for more advanced users are some things I’ll have to learn about first if I want to go this way. With a resource poor old pc as my “server” was thinking casaOS, docker, Immich and tailscale as a poor man’s substitute
I love Debian. I'm currently running Debian testing on my work laptop and my main system. On my laptop I run kde6 and on my main rig hyprland. Both are setup with btrfs and timeshift thanks to your tutorials. Timeshift saved my system multiple times when nvidia drivers or hyprland broke on new releases of testing. Thanks a lot 👍
Good video! Im getting to like Geany, it's very light weight and fast. How do you change the side panel background color?
realy nice , but i choose easy way, this is headache
Thanks for this!
ratpoison is so solid for me and easy config
2:10 he just like me fr fr
Great vid. Thanks for sharing. Now I understand why Ubuntu Budgie's choice of terminal is Tilix. I really like this terminal also 👍.
I loved this video and I will never stop ❤ but am waiting for a combination of Debian hyperland and qtile
will this work on other debian like distro's?
Hi! I am in big troubles and need help: I have Immich installed on a Proxmox LXC (Debian 12), with thousands of pictures & videos in the database. After finishing the recent upgrade to the 1.122.3 version, the Web interface asked me to identify me, which I did. Unfortunately I used the "Register" option instead of the "New session" option using my application Admin credentials. Being considered a new user, I faced a "Click to upload your first picture" screen, with 0 photo/video in that account. However, the storage stat (Online Server) shows 28.8GB, which was the size of my database. By chance, I still access the LXC via the console, using root. I tried a backup "restore", but the problem is in my identification on the web interface. Can anybody help me, please? Thank you in advance! Marc S.
If you care about your ssd, using /tmp as tempfs?
now we talking!
what a proper size of boot partition? I have seen in later videos that you're selecting 500M, while here you have 300M, is it a reason for that?
I think Zed it’s more appropriate than Geany or Lapce.
Sudo commant not found in my installation , why 😂
I'm going to disagree... - Many distros are very non-dev friendly (you don't need to use the terminal at all). - There's a wide range of good distros and GUIs to choose from. - Most distro installations are easy-peasy. But this is not the reason people don't daily drive Linux; it's due to a lack of applications (including proprietary). - Devs have to spend 10x the effort to support 4% of the market (we're just NOT going to do that). - It's 10x the effort because devs need to compile a package for each package manager. My proposal is this: - Package managers need to get together and create an LSP (Linux Standard Package). - LSP is NOT an install package for users; it's simply a package that categorizes files and includes dynamic hooks. - Package managers use the LSP to compile their own install package (like a snap, flatpak, AppImage, .deb, etc). So, in conclusion: - Package managers can do their own thing however they like. - Users get to use whichever package manager they like. - Devs only need to do their job once (which is what will lead to more applications on Linux).
it was mine too for 3 years, but now (14th dec 2024) its stashing its own tab everytime you try to select other tabs with CTRL to stash those selected tabs, but now it also stashes the tabstash page itself. annoying and dont know whats driving this behaviour, firefox had not been opening previously opened tabs the last week, but thats fixed now, maybe that affected things....
Can you suggest me any video tutorial that shows working with disk and different disk related commands.
Drew, you wrote this script for Debian Stable, do you think i could use it on testing or sid, even? Do I have to make minor changes or do you not reccoment it? (Spelling is hard; #dyslexia)
I like i3 so, should I automatically like sway ?. Also which distro should I use for sway?
Linux desktop lags badly on accessability (what a word) . Mostly a Wayland-issue dogh. It sometimes lags on languague support, which limits the casual uses outside the English language service-area.
I think after banging my head on Arch for 6 months to get a minimal tiling window manager, I have decided that debian is a good option for me RN (will go back to arch after understanding it completely)
Turn up your volume.
th-cam.com/video/qb1jrTY72gw/w-d-xo.html
2024 was the year of the Linux desktop for me. I’ve tried Linux desktop once a year for the last 25 years lol
4:24 "They want you to upgrade". "The free version". TY, will stick getting news without extra fees.
Thank you for the guide. Very in depth. Its strange that Debian decided to do an @rootfs subvolume instead of just @ with the same subvolume setup as everyone else, especially considering its incompatible with timeshift. Also strange that they do not make it an option on the netinst installer.
It's been hard for me to find a tutorial to help me do a minimum install of Debian Linux netinstall and then installing Open Box as my main window manager with everything including sound working. I mentioned sound because I did manage to get the install but sound wasn't working and I couldn't find any guide to help me fix it. Being new to Linux sucks because just learning to do things like this is difficult. To the people who say "Just Google it!" Well, how the hell did you think I found you to see that comment? That's what I've been doing smartass!
I would like to thank you for your Debian Btrfs video I usually use Arch but due to some issues I might not be always be available to update my system so I installed Debian. Installing was the hard part I hope I just works in the future without bare minimum maintenance.
I liked this point of view. And as one of the comments said "the year of Linux desktop is the year you started" As for Drew doing this type of video, this one worked. Do more if you have ideas/opinions but please get some front lighting
thank you so much for all the hard work - i will test and tell the masses
is there an RSS reader that can also show only specific keywords?
Its just a matter of how you set it up.. And how you interface with it.. You can search for any keyword through a ny feeds you have setup..
@@Spractral right, what I should've asked is if there's an RSS reader (or any sort of app that presents the content like an RSS reader) that will search the web for specific keywords. I know I can set up Google alerts but it's too clunky.
This line is not working for me :sudo apt install -y eza redis-server build-essential unzip libmagickwand-dev librsvg2-dev libmagickcore-6.q16-7-extra
The first time I used Joplin it began crashing. Never again
Linux is in most servers, its in your phones, its in your TVs, Its in your streaming devices, its in the bank terminals, its in digital signs and bill boards, its in all the cash registers, it runs all the stock market Computers, it runs in all the Super Computers, its in your appliances, its in your Cars, etc etc etc. ..But for Desktop its mostly a part time hobby for most developers, because they have full time jobs. ..They just don't have the time and lack money. Its not free.
I've never bought into the year of the Linux desktop. We don't need another version of Windows or Mac. The Linux desktop is doing just fine as is. To me, it's a place for the geekier sort of computer user.
False. We desperately need a replacement for Windows.
@Wggwjzjjxmsk Think about it. Linux will end up with all of the ads and spying Windows now has. Big corporations and Government will insist on it.
"I'm not that interesting. Just ask my son" Bruh, that's just brutal.
I need soft-wrap in Geany-Editor. Do you know a plugin for it?
found it its in >document > line wraping
2:35 : "I'm not that interesting" bro casually having something 95% of his subscribers don't have. A WIFE
I think that attracting and retaining talented and skilled engineers isn't diametrically opposed to the goal of increasing the user-base. People should switch to linux or the BSDs because those operating systems respect the privacy and data of the user, and I think personally that the more people switching to the so-called "plug-and-play" free operating systems, the better. More users doesn't conflict with aggregating talented and passionate devs-- quite the opposite. All it takes is for one user who switched to become inspired, and you've got what you're looking for. Plenty of users become devs, that's what community driven development is all about. :)
👏 Yes, true. Couldn't say it better myself.
foud it more wierd you did not put your glasses on.
is it possible to install this on archlinux???
It is possible to replicate this setup perfectly on arch linux, but this toolset c.q. script is written for debian. You can use it as a guide dogh.
Hey Drew, would you be able to make one with Snapper-Tools instead of timeshift? This was an excellent video, but i've been on arco and Eric uses Snapper and that's always worked perfectly when i mess up. I'm tired of Arch's mood swings lol and think I would like to return to something more stable. Thanks in advance
I think I disagree! o) An operating system will not live, if there are no regular users and noobs making use of the things the more advanced user base develops and creates. We need both, like Ying and Yang, the stupid users and the smart developers and anybody in between with talent in graphics, audio, UI + UX, and I mean UI + UX as in the early 2000s and not what we have now, rounded corner applications with 2 buttons and that's it. I actually wonder why games got quite complex over the years, to an extend where I think it is ridiculously complex for the casual gamer (with in-game tutorial required so you don't give up the first minute you try). At the same time, general application logic and feature level seem to be declining heavily. I see GNOME applications and I think, well.. is this some kind of accessibility application? Is this for kids or for grand parents? This can't be for real, an eMail client back in the 90's had more settings and buttons and scripting API and whatnot, it was fun to use. Your eMail client from 2024 will show you 3 mails on the screen, with margins like crazy and basically no controls visible, even the scrollbars are hidden unless you put your mouse over them. Seems humanity has already forgotten why scrollbars existed like they were before, to actually see how much more content is in a list (a proportional scroll bar that is). All this "form over function" is nonsense these days if you ask me.
Windows is the way it is by catering to everybody that doesn't want to learn, so ya there ya go. IMHO
Do you not see how additional users helps to attract the professional talent you describe? Software makers take market share into account when deciding which platforms are worth supporting. An OS isn't as useful when applications are missing.
It is the year of the Linux Desktop for my home. Converted 3 desktop PCs to Mint 22 after experimenting with various distros for 20 years. I can't personally contribute to code development but, I hope that as usage grows, more developers will be attracted to Linux.
