Camping Fail in a Violent Storm | ATMOSPHERIC RIVER BOMB CYCLONE | I Had To Retreat
I attempted to test out the one person Tarptent Dipole DW and this storm caught me a bit by surprise. The winds were a lot stronger than expected at that time of day. Nonetheless, from what little I was able to test, I am impressed how tough this tent is. Despite being thrashed around, it held up very well.
Update: after chatting with a few campers in the comments, I think I would have stood a better chance if I would have brought additional stakes to double peg the shelter. The soil was very wet and soft and even though I brought 9” stakes, they weren’t enough for the conditions.
I appreciate all the feedback. It was definitely a learning experience. Cheers

    this is great! wish dark /grey dcf was in here also, grey dcf 0.8 vs the camo 0.67 that would be cool! currently looking at a bonfus tent, and i'm undecided between camo or the grey dcf ( the grey is for sure more robust since it's heavier/ thicker so it will also be better in heavy weather) will also be darker then the spruce green, but i don't think it would beat the camo in see trough capability

      Glad it helped! I’m not too familiar with the Bonfus tents unfortunately, but they look cracking on their site. As far as .67 vs .8: Where the thicker dcf is going to help mostly is with snow load. Any dyneema shelter .55 or higher will perform very well in strong winds. My personal favorite is the camo because it’s less see through and darker. That being said, most manufacturers here in the US quit carrying it. Best of luck on your tent purchase. This pack is a piece of junk. Life lesson. When you are asked to buy a car without test driving there is a reason. Zpack does just that with their packs. We spent $1,000 for two packs that would not carry any weight. To add to the problem every time we called Zpack they came back with a different lie of the weight it will carry. The response was always in ratio to what weight we said we were carrying. When we said we had 25 lbs we were told it would carry 30. When we said 30 in a different call they said 35. This pack would be nothing more than a very expensive day pack. We hiked the whole AT and saw one other Zpack. When we saw that young land again, she had traded hers in for another pack. PLEASE DO NOT BE SUCKED IN BY THE FAKE VIDEOS THAT ZPACK PUTS ON TH-cam. These not unbiased reviews. If you see a video that just praises this bag and sounds like an infomercial, I will guarantee that is exactly what it is.

    Hi. Many thanks for your video. I really liked it. I have a Niak myself, (with only mesh inner, for pure sommer use in kind conditions), but never tested in such conditions. I guess seam sealing is smart for such conditions for a yelllow label. I also have a Allak 2 used in similar weather with no leaks. I also have a Keron 3 GT used in "all weather Norway can produce". After about 300 nights it start to leak in the air vents and seam sealer was needed to "get it back as new". That was mainly my own fault. It is very easy to tight up all lines in the evening when the moisture make the tent "hanging" and forget to loose them in the morning. When the sun dries up the tent during the day it will cause major stress on all stichings. All Hilleberg tents have stiching that will swell with moisture and seal, but only to a sertain point... So for all tents with such stiching, (no matter what brand), it is important to untight the lines in the morning. I learned the hard way. 🤣

    • @alexonthemountain8343
      @alexonthemountain8343 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes the swelling when wet is an inherent issue with all nylon tents unfortunately. Silpoly doesn’t sag and handles UV rays much better, but most manufacturers make tents out of silicone treated nylon. Nylon is supposedly more abrasion resistant and also can be dyed with brighter colors. Cheers 🍻

    The stability of this tent is greatly improved by adding four additional guy lines. Simply add them to the already existing loops so that each pool can then be supported from two different directions. The weight gain is negligible but the benefits are great. I used lime coloured 2 mm Lawson Glowire. The contrasting colour makes it easier to sort out any potential tangles.

      @@alexonthemountain8343 I wish more would test newer tents in real conditions, instead of just basic set up videos on nice, flat, wide surfaces. Looking at X-Mid 1 or Dipole 1 DW with solid interior for exposed camps in early fall conditions in the northern Rockies, like the Wind River Range. My SMD Trekker has been good, but no tie outs for serious wind. Lots of buried rocks and uneven ground make for few acceptable spots though. Still like the Dipole vs X-Mid? Issues with short lines at the corners? Know Dipole narrows to 28" but with a solid inner, I also thought the X-Mid might be seem too narrow.

      @@jedsmith4988 I appreciate it. Yeah that was a tough one. Looking back and thinking about how unusually soft the soil was (probably because it used to be farmland), I really think the Dipole would have made it. I don’t think I would have slept very well but that’s another matter. Before getting the Dipole, I purchased an Xmid-1p (silpoly version) but I returned it because I found the inner just too narrow. The Dipole inner feels about 30-40% more spacious if I had to put a number on it. Another idea would be to get an MLD Duomid and have Ron make you a custom inner that is wider. He charges $200 for if I recall. The only caveat is that he doesn’t do solid inners… I just came back from the Lake District NP in the UK and used the Dipole there (video coming soon) and personally think it is the perfect ultralight 1p, DW shelter currently on the market. Hi Alex. Had a similar experience a week ago in 20f with 50mph freezing rain. Full goretex waterproofs and weather was so mad they just soaked through. Hands freezing and took decision to bail before I even tried to pitch the tent. In my experience the only way to keep pegs down in those winds and soft ground is to double peg every point. Back stake each peg through the first peg pull out line. Also a clip system tent built from ground up is easiest to pitch with guy lines tied up to stop them tangling. That’s the theory but pitching in high wind is never simple and I’ve broken 10mm poles trying! Take care. Gary

      Hi Gary, sounds like you went to hell and back! The windchill must have been dreadful. Thank you, that’s an excellent recommendation. I’ll bring additional pegs should I attempt this stunt again… You’re right about the clip system. My Hilleberg Allak is designed that way and it was a breeze to pitch in the wind. No pun intended. Cheers

    • @alexonthemountain8343

      They’re definitely tougher to pitch in these conditions. I still think there was probably a way. Perhaps longer pegs or double pegging would have done it. That being said, a hilleberg Soulo or a Storm Starwould have been a walk in the park…

    Why not pitch behind the rock... where you were recording out of the wind? Just not making sense other than wanting to fail.

      Unfortunately there wasn’t a sheltered spot anywhere on that mountain other than the wooded area and I didn’t want to take a chance with widow makers. I touched on that at the end of the video…

    on my Sierra Nevada thru hike last year I got absolutely wrecked by tropical storm Hillary on my way over kearsarge pass. ripped my tarp tie outs right off the tent. I had to build a rock wall around me to keep from being blasted by small twigs, pine cones, pebbles and dirt. it was a rough night.

    i had a tent in a top of the hill 2500 meters above see, in windy , crazy night but probably less then this storm, but similar. Mine tent was losing structure all night in the morning it was kreepy. I had to put all around the tent little rocks to put some weight to tent to keep it in the grass (combined grass with rocks).

    Well its kinda your fault by pitching in that silly place instead of more quiet one by the trees of wherever else. I mean on a real thru-hike you would never be setting your tent there unless you plain stupid or silly.

    • @alexonthemountain8343
      @alexonthemountain8343 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You might have a point. But I will say that it’s more than likely doable. There’s a short clip on youtube showing 3 MLD Duomids holding up to 65 mph winds. Those shelters have a lot more guylines and attachment points. Perhaps that was part of the issue with the Dipole. Also the soil was extremely soft which made it a challenge keeping the pegs in the ground. Cheers bud

    Hi, I’m leaving to Colombia in a month to travel South America by bicycle for a year and need some advice. Mostly focussing on bikepacking and gravel roads trough the Andes. I’m doubting between the hilleberg Niak and Soulo. Weight is an important factor for me as will ride trough the Andes. Chances are very low I will camp in the snow. Because I have warm sleeping bag I was wondering if I could go lighter by choosing the Niak. I asked some bikepackers and most of them tell me a three season tent would be enough (for example a hubba hubba but I prefer Hilleberg). The Niak is lighter, more for three seasons than four and less weatherproof. I like the additional space compared to to the Soulo but I’m a bit afraid of it holding itself in rough weather. Probably I starting camping in Peru (so not in Colombia) The Soulo is heavier but more weatherproof. It’s quite a lot heavier than the Niak, the livability and room is less but it’s build like a tank. I’m afraid it will be to hot in some parts of my journey but probably will be happy in stormy and cold conditions. I’m packing a -12 comfort degrees Celsius sleeping bag tough. What would your advice be? Best regards, Emile

      @alexonthemountain8343 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Emile, Sounds like you’ll be going on a great adventure! If you’re really set on getting a Hilleberg for the trip then I would personally go with the Niak. The Soulo would be too small for that length of time. Also the Soulo runs pretty hot (mostly due to the rainfly extending to the ground and solid inner), even with the vent and door open. That being said I would definitely replace 5 pegs that come with the tent for longer ones (have a look at 9” easton Nano pegs), for the guylines and vestibule door. The ones that come with the Niak are only 4” and practically useless should you encounter soft soil. Also I would think about getting 10mm poles to replace the 9mm ones to make the tent stronger for high winds. Snow wise, I think the Niak would hold up easily to 6 or so inches of snow, possibly more. Overall the Niak is a great shelter. it’s versatile. The Soulo is great for winter camping on peaks but overkill for most other situations. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. All the best, Alex

    16:00 Good question. Let's break down one component, and think of alternatives. About the tangled guylines, I've never experienced that with my hilleberg's thicker line, so smaller diameter guy lines might be a contributing factor. I know Helsport experimented with sown-in elastic bands attached next to where the guy line attach to the tent. Meaning, you could bundle the guy line up and keep them neat and organised. The elasticity worked well, until it got down to -20C pluss hurricane winds. That could be a realistic, easy, and cost free modification.

    • @alexonthemountain8343
      @alexonthemountain8343 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s sounds like a good idea actually. You’ve got me thinking. Perhaps on a future storm camp, simply putting an elastic cord around the rolled up guylines will do the trick. Much appreciated 👍

    I wonder if the Allek 2 would've been able to withstand the wind. That would have been my choice of tent.

    • @alexonthemountain8343
      @alexonthemountain8343 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      More than likely since the Allak has 6 guyout points and 12 guylines. Also, from personal experience, it’s easier to pitch in high winds. The Allak is a great tent. All the best

    Top test, I have made the same experience with the Niak zipper leaking in heavy rain. Haven't reached out to Hilleberg yet, will seam-seal it from inside the zipper stitching. Other than that a super sturdy tent for a 3 season one. Very happy with the Niak.

      @alexonthemountain8343 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I agree the Niak is a great tent, very capable even in some snowy conditions. Hilleberg told me to simply seem seal it. If you go to my latest video, I talk about a technique where you can seem seal it from the outside and where you don’t notice anything. You can fast forward to the 13 minute mark if you don’t wanna watch the whole video. It’s another option if you decide to seam seal the door. Cheers!
