Wild Camping at Small Water in the Tarptent Dipole 1 DW | Rain and Fog ...of course!
Went wild camping up in the Lake District National Park. I've always wanted to camp over by Small Water and it didn't disappoint. Despite having a cold, I had a great time testing out the new Dipole 1p. Just a fantastic trekking pole tent... Feel free to reach out with any questions about gear and such. Cheers.

Did you have a chance to try the tent out in the rain again after leak fix?
@@christianblanche1569 I sure did, and no leaks after a little bit of seam sealing… 👍
anyone upgrade their niak poles to 10mm?
@@martinclennon4640 yes it’s very common and they help a lot. You can get them directly through Hilly…
Well I'd just got done watching your niak pitching in a storm and thought I'd research a dipole ermmmm maybe not 😂
@@cuprajake1 having used this tent a good bit more since this video, I think it’s a great shelter. It just needs to be double pegged at the ends to handle severe weather properly. Also, Dan Durston just came out with a new tent that might be of interest to you. The only shame is that it isn’t available with a solid inner yet. Cheers 🍻
@alexonthemountain8343 yeah I agree it does look to have more storm worthy build than the nallo, I'm still out on the xdome just because of those carbon poles.
@@cuprajake1 true. Dan claims that it’s very storm worthy, but those carbon poles would make me nervous in strong winds.
Great video, thanks! Getting straight to the point and useful infos, awesome! Will try it out soon in Patagonia 😀
@@PhilippSt sounds like you’re going to beautiful part of the world. Never been but it’s on my bucket list. All the best👍
You definitely deserve an award for this one!
That's a good weather test for sure !
I'm not a huge fan of a tip up design. One mistake or one stake getting loose in windy conditions and you're likely to puncture the flysheet. Even if this is a great tent, I'm not sure it can safely sustain that kind of wind anyway.
@@tt-of4xv right, these trekking pole tents can be quite finicky... I still am planning on testing it out in another good storm, hopefully soon as I am itching to get out there! Glad you enjoyed the videos! All the best… 🍻
Nice video, at first i doubted this would be a relevant video. If you pack a Niak it's because it's a light tent with a small footprint, easy to find a sheltered spot for,...if you take a Niak you are not expecting big storms in the area at that time a year, you are not bringing extra poles or pegs on those travels,.. you are probably the lucky guy with a tent, not just some bivyback or hammock and a tarp,.. If you really can't find a sheltered spot you are going to sit up in the tent during the whole storm, supporting the poles and hoping the fly doesn't tear, the pegs hold,.... it's a risk you take while packing or even buying a tent for a trip,... While you are hoping your Niak holds during a storm a lot of lightweight tents will collapse, tear up, even without flying debris, a lot of poles will snap, a lot of tents will leak in a way that closing the inner tent will not solve,... On the other side there will be people in a decent 4 season tent like the soulo or in a dedicated storm tent with much more staking options that sleep like nothing is happening but they carry a 2.7kg tent instead of a 1.7 kg tent,... If you are car camping with a Niak without youtube obligations you can use the car to shelter your pitch or just sleep inside the car. But then I remembered that there are a lot of people with lots of money but no camping experience. People that would buy the most expensive tent in the store without any idea about black, red or yellow label and pitch it a the place with the most stunning view unaware of the weather,...
@@kanaalvanNI many thanks. I agree, the Niak is a great tent. While there are many tents that are lighter these days, it’s weight relative to strength and size is very good. Cheers
You might want to look at the KUIU Storm Star. Very strong and water tight! Cheers !
@@Sneaky-Sneaky That’s definitely a tent I want to add to the old arsenal. 😀👍
The Hilleberg Niak is a lightweight, quick pitch, roomy shelter for a mobile traveller. Think hiker/cyclist. It is easily beefed up with 10mm poles, 3mm cord and seam sealing. The experienced traveller pitches to minimise the effects of poor weather.
@@jackledger8877 I suppose you could used it for that, but these days there are plenty of other tents on the market that are lighter weight and take up less space if you’re a back or bike-packer.
You have a great voice, could be a voice over or voice actor
I believe that any tent, regardless of its brand, is likely to leak in harsh weather. The intense winds can force water into the stitching, making it crucial to ensure those seams are sealed.
@@UhuruFrontier you make a very good point. In my experience so far, some tents leak and some don’t, regardless of brand or perceived quality. That being said, it never hurts to seem seal and if you do it right, it’s not very noticeable.
Great looking hiking tent. I've only got experience with free standing tents but I'm more and more looking at these kind. Put a plastic cola bottle cap inside your pegs bag, very useful to put pressure on the peg without hurting your hand.
@@tubulzr thanks for the input. I will try that next time.

Great video, brilliant content. . Saw the last one when you tried to put your tent up in incredible conditions. Top effort. I recently bought the Dipole 1 DW, and I think it's one of my fav tents.. Really underrated and not a lot of exposure compared to many other similar tents iMO.

@@dannybullit all the shots are from outside the wilderness area. Think first before you post
60 years ago when I started camping, the advice was ‘never touch the canvas’, if you do it will leak.
Hey man, great video as usual. I'm about to do a thru-hike in Picos de Europa (spain) in about a week. I have the same tent and I recently did the seam sealing (crossing my fingers I did it correctly). I was wondering what kind of cord did you get for the side pegs. I'll probably need to get some cord attachment to make sure my tent doesnt fold under bad weather conditions. Love the fact you used it under some rain. Can't wait to finally put it to test. Cheers.
@@nymuelovan I’m sure it’ll be a great trip. I’ve seen lots of videos of Picos De Europa and it looks amazing. So I replaced the two Apex guy lines with 10 foot ones (about 3 meters each). This will make the tent more stable if you get hit by a crosswind. Also, I added 3 foot (~1 meter) guy lines to the end struts. And finally, I always make sure I bring at least six long pegs. Four for the corners and two for the apex guylines. Let me know how the trip goes. I’d love to hear about it! All the best 👍👍
Seam seal, seam seal, seam seal. All sil-nylon tents need seam sealing, unlike polyester ones. Even if the manufacturer says there's no need.
Great ultralight set up Alex, the scenery was as usual an excellent pick.
@@mcrb1776 thanks buddy! Much appreciated… All the best 🍻
Great video! I love the tarp setup. Looks almost like it was designed for this tent, even color matched! I've had the red Hilleberg Niak for about a year and love it so far. I have a slightly larger and much cheaper tarp I think I will give this a try with when car camping. If it works out well I might invest in something more lightweight for backpacking in inclement weather. Curious what rain gear you have, and how you felt it held up? I know you said you should have kept your rain pants on, so I assume you had them on when setting up the tent/tarp, and I see your jacket is a Saloman, but what model? Thanks in advance!
I had to get the laptop out once I saw you posted. I knew my phone wouldn’t do it justice! Thank you for the beautiful shots! Hi, Lovely video. I just wondered how you edited your videos, if there was a special programme or something? Tent looks interesting. I have an xmid but find it flaps in my face a lot during wind. How does that compare?
@@lloydcozens9346 Hey there! I use a program called Final Cut Pro. It takes a little bit of learning, but there are plenty of good TH-cam videos on how to use this editor. I purchased the X-mid 1 before this one and found it too small for my liking. And yes, it’s not as sturdy in the wind. The Dupole (silpoly version) does surprisingly well. Hope this helps! pegs are usually the ones to go on a trekking pole tent. i've got those 9 inch pegs for this exact reason when i go out in the scottish hills
Agreed. I now double peg too when I think the winds might be strong. Cheers
Spray a little fabsil over the vent material.
Delta pegs u want brilliant put wet gear in other side of tent
this is great! wish dark /grey dcf was in here also, grey dcf 0.8 vs the camo 0.67 that would be cool! currently looking at a bonfus tent, and i'm undecided between camo or the grey dcf ( the grey is for sure more robust since it's heavier/ thicker so it will also be better in heavy weather) will also be darker then the spruce green, but i don't think it would beat the camo in see trough capability
Glad it helped! I’m not too familiar with the Bonfus tents unfortunately, but they look cracking on their site. As far as .67 vs .8: Where the thicker dcf is going to help mostly is with snow load. Any dyneema shelter .55 or higher will perform very well in strong winds. My personal favorite is the camo because it’s less see through and darker. That being said, most manufacturers here in the US quit carrying it. Best of luck on your tent purchase. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions. Cheers
@@alexonthemountain8343 yeah just wanted to order, seems they stopped doing camo also, jsut recently :'( big bummer! it helps alot with stealth camping/ wildcamping to bad i'm just to late! ps; thanks for providing the info!

Can I ask where did you get the tent from? And if you imported it, how long did it take to arrive? Crazy day to pitch the tent out in the open 😱
It’s the Tarptent Dipole DW 1p (silpoly version). If you live in the US, you will usually get it within a week of less, I’m not sure about importing into another country. I’ve got another video with it coming out soon. It’s a fantastic tent in my opinion. Cheers
@@alexonthemountain8343 Sorry, I thought you were british, thats why I asked. I've been wanting to get my hands ln it, since I'm 6'5, but I'm afraid it might arrive too late for summer. Thanks for the response and the great content.
@@nymuelovan I think it will works fine for tall people. Thanks to the end struts, it gives you more headroom at both ends of the tent. For reference, I’m 5’10” and I sleep comfortably in it with my backpack at my feet. If you do end up, ordering it, I would definitely get the foldable struts, that will allow you to pack the tent down smaller…
@@alexonthemountain8343 I appreciate the extra info and insight. I actually sent a message to TarpTent months ago, and Henry (founder), kindly pointed out that the dipole might be the most suited for taller folks. I also asked about the ProTrail, for a more minimalistic shelter, but it's another style of camping.
@@nymuelovan happy to help! All the best…
This pack is a piece of junk. Life lesson. When you are asked to buy a car without test driving there is a reason. Zpack does just that with their packs. We spent $1,000 for two packs that would not carry any weight. To add to the problem every time we called Zpack they came back with a different lie of the weight it will carry. The response was always in ratio to what weight we said we were carrying. When we said we had 25 lbs we were told it would carry 30. When we said 30 in a different call they said 35. This pack would be nothing more than a very expensive day pack. We hiked the whole AT and saw one other Zpack. When we saw that young land again, she had traded hers in for another pack. PLEASE DO NOT BE SUCKED IN BY THE FAKE VIDEOS THAT ZPACK PUTS ON TH-cam. These not unbiased reviews. If you see a video that just praises this bag and sounds like an infomercial, I will guarantee that is exactly what it is.
Hi. Many thanks for your video. I really liked it. I have a Niak myself, (with only mesh inner, for pure sommer use in kind conditions), but never tested in such conditions. I guess seam sealing is smart for such conditions for a yelllow label. I also have a Allak 2 used in similar weather with no leaks. I also have a Keron 3 GT used in "all weather Norway can produce". After about 300 nights it start to leak in the air vents and seam sealer was needed to "get it back as new". That was mainly my own fault. It is very easy to tight up all lines in the evening when the moisture make the tent "hanging" and forget to loose them in the morning. When the sun dries up the tent during the day it will cause major stress on all stichings. All Hilleberg tents have stiching that will swell with moisture and seal, but only to a sertain point... So for all tents with such stiching, (no matter what brand), it is important to untight the lines in the morning. I learned the hard way. 🤣
Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes the swelling when wet is an inherent issue with all nylon tents unfortunately. Silpoly doesn’t sag and handles UV rays much better, but most manufacturers make tents out of silicone treated nylon. Nylon is supposedly more abrasion resistant and also can be dyed with brighter colors. Cheers 🍻
All i hear is leaks and severe condensation from hilleberg tents even with the seams sealed so I’ll stick with my vango banshee that doesn’t do any of this at a fraction of the price
Both my Hillebergs leaked. It’s surprising really…
I think you had it backwards based on the wind direction 35:03
I had the label into the wind which is what the directions call for. That way you can get in and out of the tent comfortably if the wind is blowing hard.
Interesting, I’d think that the lower side of the rain flap would work more efficiently into the wind. I’ve not experienced that leakage on mine, but I’ve also not had a cross wind that heavy. Thanks for the video!
You certainly like the wind and the rain, luckily or not we are blessed with all that palaver here in the UK. Just binge watching your vids to catch up. Haweswater reservoir one of my favourite places especially when the water level drops to critical and the sunken village of Mardale eerily starts to reappear. Chin chin
I definitely do, although we’ve been getting hammered so much lately in California that I wouldn’t mind getting a small break from the storms camps, lol. Funny you should mention Haweswater because I’ve just arrived in the UK and was thinking a wild camp up there maybe in a week or so. There are a couple of tarns near there that would make for a cool camp I think (I can’t recall their names of the tarns the top of my head). For the moment, getting over jetlag… Cheers 👍
For a moment there I thought you were going to utter the quote "garlic, rosemary and salt" from the cult film Withnail & i. Love the sound of the rain whilst cooking. Chin chin
New sub here, fantastic pitch you got there with all the boxes ticked, also, very well edited and nice relaxing vibe. Love it that folk across the pond use the term "nippy" for it being cold. Haystacks will definitely be my next wild camp when I get off this hamster wheel, thanks for taking the time and effort to share. Chin chin
