Review & Comparison of the MSR Titan Kettle 85 vs the Snow Peak Trek 700 Mug

  • In this short video, I take a close look at two titanium pots that I've been using quite a bit while trekking, giving you the pros and cons of each and providing some geeky information as well: the MSR Titan Kettle 85 and the Snow Peak Trek 700 Mug. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm sure I missed a thing or two, lol!
    Correction: Snow Peak claims the lid is made of a thick and heavier gauge titanium, not stainless steel. That being said it is heavy for it’s size and seems to be a common complaint among backpackers.
    Main takeaways:
    Snow Peak Trek 700:
    The size is more like 850ml.
    Nicer handles, better feel when holding.
    Heavy and quirky lid.
    Less expensive.
    MSR Titan Kettle:
    We're unsure if it is pure titanium or alloyed with aluminium and vanadium.
    More versatile due to it's shape.
    Nicer and tighter lid.
    Seems to be more popular than the Snow Peak form comments and reviews here and elsewhere online.
    The Giveaways has now ended and the winner is Ninth Element!
    I will do another giveaway at 750 so stay tuned!

    According to Snow Peak the lid is titanium. If you pair it with Snow Peak spork, the middle two prongs can be inserted into the small opening of the lid to remove it when it’s hot.

    The tight fitting lid of the MSR Titan Kettle does the trick for me, which is why I was glad to get one from my brother for my birthday a few days ago. Wouldn't mind a spare, but might as well not enter me in the drawing as I had one already and don't care for a double wall mug. I am having second thoughts about that califonia safety warning though.

    Thank you for doing this comparison!! The best part about the Snow Peak Trek 700 is the parts fit
    inside and it’s multifunctional for beverage or food. BUT my vote is for the MSR Titan Kettle 85 mostly because it is wider, providing more stability and is easier for meal prep. Thank you so much for the chance at the giveaway. What a very generous gift for a lucky subscriber! Btw Mt. C looked beautiful! 🌲

    Not sure if its in the comments already but inside the msr titan kettle there are circles indented that connect the metal that holds the handle. I have found that they line up with 1, 2 and 3 cup measurements. Not sure if this was intended but was a huge find.

    I can't seem to fit my pocket rocket deluxe in my Titan kettle with a 100g canister. How'd you do it?

    • @alexonthemountain8343
      @alexonthemountain8343  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roy Martinez it takes a bit of finagling around but you start by placing the stove at the bottom (with the ignitor to the side), then place the canister in top of it, top up.

    The Snow Peak lid is 100% Grade 1 Titanium. There is no steel anywhere. Confirmed with Snow Peak ❄️

    • @alexonthemountain8343
      @alexonthemountain8343  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for bringing it to my attention. It certainly feels and looks like steel, but you are correct, snow peak says that it is a thick gauge titanium. It is definitely heavy for its size. Some backpackers choose to replace it with lighter options. In this case the larger MSR lid is lighter than the smaller snow peak one. Either patch is a great option, there is also the Toaks 750 which is even lighter. Cheers!

    My understanding from watching other content creators is that if you put 'giveaway' in your title, you are most likely going to be giving away your giveaway 😜 to somebody who is not a subscriber. Apparently they come out of the woodwork at that 'giveaway' in the title. And they are not subscribers. They are just there for the freebie, even if you make them subscribe to be eligible.
