Sport Scientist & Dietitian Review GU Energy Gels (Is It Enough?)
Gu was created as a product that was easier to consume and that caused less GI distress than the bars that were available at the time (back in 1994!).
Per serving, there are 22g carbs (7g of sugar) and 55-125mg sodium depending on the flavor. The ingredients are maltodextrin, water, and fructose, sodium citrate, and some preservatives. Some flavors also have caffeine depending on the flavor again.
The flavors are pretty good, the ingredients are pretty good, and we like these gels and have used most of them. Our concern is that the recommended dose is pretty low for both carbs and sodium. These could be a good option to complement a nutrition plan where you want to take something different and have a different flavor. We wouldn't recommend fueling on Gu alone, but for a little treat or something as a reward during a long race they could fit in well in a plan.
What do you think of Gu? Do you use their gels?

Sport Scientist & Dietitian Review LMNT Electrolyte Drink
มุมมอง 1.8K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
LMNT is an electrolyte drink. This product was initially created for keto and paleo individuals who the founders believed needed additional salt in their hydration. This product could be useful for people who want a product to use outside of training (especially people with low blood pressure). It has 1000mg sodium, 200mg potassium, and 60mg magnesium per serving. The flavors are creative. Alex...

There is a hint of sweetness and that's the only positive thing we can say about this gel. The taste is poor and there is an inconsistent consistency to this gel meaning it has spilled all over us right now. If you're even interested in this gel after that introduction... there are 140cKal, 70mg Na, 36g carbs, and a bunch of added vitamins and minerals. tl;dr - don't try this product. → If you ...
Too Much Potassium RUINS Your Hydration
มุมมอง 598หลายเดือนก่อน
The kidneys regulate salts in our body and if the sodium to potassium ratio is off (too much potassium), they try to get rid of extra potassium by peeing it out, but unfortunately when urine is produced some sodium will also be lost. So too much potassium can lead to sodium losses and ineffective hydration. Even though we sweat out some potassium, it's such a small amount that there is no need ...

What is a "clean product"? Exploring NUUN's claims...

What bothers you the most about Nuun? It's hard to get past all the labels on the box that are full of marketing terms and claims. We're a little annoyed by the "clean" labeling and the lack of clarity that word has here. These and Sis Beta are my favorite. Salted Watermelon is so good. I am starting to pull away from gels though. I have found a 50/50 mix of country time lemonade and table sugar mixed to 80-100g CHO way too good of value. Only issue is the winter when water intake is lower, which makes bathroom stops more frequent. Also funny you mention the change in fueling philosophy over the years. The 50+ crowd will bring water and a couple of gels to the 2-3 hour group ride. I'm rather new(post covid cyclist), but my coach has drilled fueling into my head. I have had to stop engaging with coworkers who see my stash of carbs at my desk and always bring up diabetes. Keeping those gylcogen stores up is nearly a full time job in and of itself. Also, you guys are the ones who got me to stop buying hydration and validated my belief sea salt is all the electolytes you need.

    Would you guys consider doing a video on fueling and hydration for other sports. Beach volleyball (or other outdoor activities) really dehydrate the player and requires a lot of short 10-20 second max output efforts over 30-90 minutes. How does one approach fueling conservatively without underdosing too much? Thanks.

    • @Saturday_ProFuel
      @Saturday_ProFuel 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For an activity like that, we recommend considering the overall, average intensity of the 30-90' and then fueling for that. So it is more likely to be a moderate or tempo type of effort if you're using the Saturday app. Then we'd recommend choosing an activity type (in the app) where the body position is vertical like running or cross-country skiing. The biggest impact on your nutrition is probably the conditions and how hot it on the day which will change the sodium and water recommendations.

    How many glucose molecules are linked together in resistant maltodextrin?

    • @Saturday_ProFuel
      @Saturday_ProFuel 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      10+, but also different type of linkages than the maltodextrin preferable for sport performance. Resistant maltodextrin (RMD) = bad for during sport performance, better for health outside exercise, not fully digestible, slows down gut processing of other things and blunts flow of glucose to bloodstream from gut. All bad for sports, but better than regular non-resistant maltodextrin if one choose (for some reason?) to consume it outside exercise. Regular non-resistant maltodextrin = rapidly absorbable and fully digestible. Gets to blood stream fully and quickly. Great for sports. Not optimal for healthy calorie consumption outside of during exercise periods.

    I make my own hydration mix and my own energy mix. Which one, if any, goes in my bottles depends on the type of ride I'm doing. If it comes up in conversations I tell people my recipes and how cheap it is to make.... and then they immediately ask which name brand they should buy 😂

      @Saturday_ProFuel 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hahaha - what brand sugar and table salt do you use?! I'm not sure I even know, I just use what's at home.

    • @jasonhurst2491
      @jasonhurst2491 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Saturday_ProFuel I also use whatever is in the cupboard. Sugar is cane sugar. Prefer caster sugar to regular table sugar as the granules are much smaller, but otherwise it's the same. It mixes more easily in the bottle. No need to boil the water and cool it again. Salt is iodised table salt (sea salt). For this morning's 130km ride I had two 750ml bottles with about 1/3 coconut water for taste and potassium, 100g sugar and approx 500mg (1/4 teaspoon) table salt. Then fill with water. Also a camelback bladder with 1 litre of plain water to rinse my teeth between sips. For an event like a competitive Gran Fondo where I might not want to wrangle solid foods while riding in a hectic bunch I might double the sugar and salt to keep the taste balanced. Then add 50g of powdered coconut milk for more energy, yummy taste and some texture. I don't have issues with a high sugar content, but I imagine the coconut milk may help with gut issues for some people who do struggle with high carb drink mixes. I also have my camelback (slim/aero backpack, but can carry 2 litres) so I don't have to grab more fuilds during the ride unless it's crazy hot. Yeah, the fats probably do slow down the absorption of the carbs from the sugar, but I'm nowhere near the pointy end of the event so consistency of performance is far more important to me. From memory the fat in coconut milk is about 50% MCT which is absorbed faster than saturated fats so it makes a reasonable multi-layer energy drink. I can always grab a coke from an aid station if I've dug too deep. When I use solid food it's Aldi Fruity Bars (26g carbs ber bar and little fat) and Woolworths (one of our big supermarkets in Aus) Fruit Sticks (16g carbs per stick and basically fruit flavoured sugar). Dirt cheap, high carb per serve and I find them easy to consume while riding. I never waste money on 'branded' energy or hydration.

While they say 500ml per packet, I do 750ml, but Skratch is my primary (cucumber lime) so LMNT in the pallet buster role is great for me. As with 99% of the pre-packaged stuff, it's the convenience of the packaging that is tough to beat.

      Yes - convenience and an occasional different taste profile can definitely be useful. We're not against using products where you can make them work for you which is why we try to suggest options for additions or adjustments.

    Agreed that LMNT is overpriced packaging, marketing, and salt. I also dislike stevia extract. Water and sodium citrate for the win!

      A couple of things that you could try are to use a shaker designed for making protein powder drinks that has either a sieve or a metal ball, or to use warm water (make it the night before and then refrigerate).

      I'm glad you found it useful. We know that typically practice is ahead of the research, but it's so critical to do that research to quantify and validate the claims you hear from athletes and nutrition companies.

    What about Powerbar's new blackline. Based on your videos it seems 1:1-2:1 ratio is best. And sodium citrate is the best sodium source. And cut out any other unnecessary things out. The Powerbar Fuel 90 used maltodextrin, fructose and sodium citrate in 1:0.8 ratio with 201mg of sodium. Seems a good base option- with adding some more sodium to the product of your own? Starting to use the Saturday app and thinking this could be a good base product to adapt needs from.

      We'll add that to the list for future reviews. However, based on what you said, it does sound like it could be a good base to use with the app and to supplement with some extra sodium.

    Worse than sugar. It’s starchy and causes higher blood sugar spikes than cane sugar.

      For during sport, maltodextrin is a great option. Outside of use during exercise, we wouldn't recommend it as part of your daily diet.

    'Quick' question: How do I fuel a day on the mountain snowboarding? That's not in the app. I want to be out there for 4-7 hours but I always feel wrecked after.

      you could wear a hear rate monitor to check what zones you are going into .. then use those in the calculator. If you don't want to do any of that - well - just start taking in about 70 grams per hour of very simple carbs like sugar and also be drinking enough water (based on your urination amounts and color)

      @@FT__Bicycling_____-sc7yv I should definitely try a heart rate monitor at least to see the time intervals of rest on the chairlift vs downhill work time and effort.

      Thanks for the question. I hope you're having a good snowboarding session so far. For an activity that is intermittent like snowboarding you would need to use the average intensity the time you're on the mountain; this will probably be "low aerobic". Then estimate how much you will be sweating which can be tricky in cold conditions, but if you're dressed up in many layers it's important to get this right. Then use an activity that represents the same upright body position so I would suggest either xc skiing or running in the app. I hope that helps.

      @@Saturday_ProFuelthanks so much for the reply. It's a tricky one to fuel, that's for sure.
