@@Saturday_ProFuel 😄As you know, I’m looking forward to your HBCD video. My question for that video is about Skratch Labs Super High-Carb Sports Drink Mix: They add fructose, but why, and how much should I add to my HBCD powder to recreate their recipe? 🤔
Amazing review. Hopefully will help many avoid relying on this hydration beverage for fuel during their race. I will stick to Saturdays Speed Nectar on the bike, and Maurten gels on the run for my 70.3s.
I have been using the Saturday App for about 5 weeks now and love the simplicity of the sugar, water and sodium citrate Saturday nectar. Not sure why you would need anything else. Since there are special needs bags in IM distance races you should be able to provide almost 100% of your own fuel sources.
Good video. I think it encourages people to bring as much of their own drink on the bike as they can even tho it adds weight to your bike. And make sure u r supplementing it w/ carbs via gels/chews for the run…if u drink it at all. What they mixed up at TX 70.3 was sweet tasting. Bad biz decision by IM.
Thank you. As you suggest, athletes should be careful to take care of their own nutrition during races as the options may be limited out on the course and often the products are mixed without following the instructions carefully. Nevertheless, it's a pity that IM moved from a product that had more CHO and could be used effectively without the need to carry everything.
They are still having the maurten gels on course. I’m now freaking out about my nutrition plan. Was hoping to bring a few CHO on the bike and run to get the carbs I needed. Now I have to rethink things because maurten has always given me GERD. Any tips on how to carry enough premixed speed nectar for a 140.6?
For me, the Stevia aftertaste is a deal killer, The "Salty" choices are the better of two general category/evils since it overpowers the Stevia aftertaste.
Ironman would argue that this complements maurtens but I’m with you. I did a 70.3 last weekend and opted to pass on mortal. It was a huge inconvenience compared to GE in past events.
Yes, it's possible to find a solution like you suggest, but definitely more inconvenient and a more complicated backup plan for athletes who may have used that in case something went wrong with their own nutrition plans.
I ran the mortal hydration "Salted Mango" in bottles for my 118 mile gravel race. I ran a sachet per bottle for my sodium/electrolyte needs and plain water in my 65oz USWE pack. I then used Maurten Caffeine gels (2/hour) and a Maurten solid bar (1 every other hour) for my carb needs. It worked well for me. But yeah, the Mortal Hydration on its own would be a recipe for disaster IMO.
That's great to hear you had a solution that worked so well for you. Mortal hydration can definitely be used in conjunction with other products, but like you said it's a big shift from having a drink that could be the source of carbs and electrolytes which many athletes were used to at Ironman.
That could be an alternative strategy and could definitely work. It's important that athletes understand that and appreciate what's available on course. Not everyone is aware of the changes or how low-carb the new drink is. It also reduces the options for athletes who wanted to use only on-course drinks for their race nutrition.
Isn’t this a “hydration” product, not nutrition!? How many people actually drink the Gatorade on course? Is guess not very many, hence why you see AGers with 6 bottles for a half. Take gels and bars from the aid stations on the bike and gels from the aid stations on the runs. They had this in Oregon and it was great, and the options are not as bad as everyone thinks. They still have maurten on course
Yep, hydration for sure. Great GTM by IM, The Feed, Mortal & Maurten. Get the two highest-margin products on IM courses, then everyone wants to buy Mortal + Maurten for training to practice with on-course nutrition. :)
I’m in a conspiratorial mood today. What if getting rid of Gatorade Endurance was a way to get 2 new sponsors out of it? Mortal is electrolytes, and barely any carbs. Maurten is all carbs and barely any sodium (one of the chief nutritionist thinks it’s overrated). And if you want to survive your race, you need both carbs and sodium… Surely I’m not the only one?
No impact on me. I use Skratch Labs + Maurten (gels and bars to mix up texture) on the ride and Precision salts, Maurten gels and aid station water on the run. I super concentrate the skratch on the bike and keep a bottle swap in special needs bag for a full - mixing with water to right level in BTA while I keep the super concentrated and water in BTS bottles. Carrying enough salt tablets in kit during run is a non issue.
That's a robust strategy you have. I think many more athletes will need to follow a similar plan and carry more of their own nutrition. It would be nice to have the option not to if the drinks on course had more carbs.
I am one of the volunteers for IM Maine 70.3. Your Mortal Hydration is garbage, all Stevia, the athletes did not like it, it tastes like seawater and if you want us to sling this garbage while wearing you company logo. we should be paid.
Thanks for the comment and feedback. We're not associated with Ironman and this video is just to explain to athletes the implications of the changes. We definitely preferred the Gatorade option at events over Mortal.
I see Saturday, I click 👍! 😁

Also, does it need to be fructose or would sucrose added to HBCD be just as effective?
If you all are looking for topics to cover in your videos, I'd love to hear your thoughts on "complex carb" fueling products like UCan.
We've got a jug in our garage-office up for review. :)

Great, and entertaining video! 🤠
Thank you Tim!

That's great to hear! We're really pleased it's working for and can be a good race option too.

Great info! Thank you! Two bottles of concentrate plus one of fresh water. Top up fresh water from every aid station.
@@Saturday_ProFueli guess I don’t understand how to mix/calculate the concentrate. Is there a way to calculate this in the app?
Maurten is on the course also
Is that still the case for races that have happened later in this year? We thought they were moving over to Mortal only.
I was thinking of using maple syrup to compensate for lack of carbs
Yes, that's a good option! We generally recommend table sugar as it's cheap and easy to find, but maple syrup could also work.
Thanks! Great video. Helpful.
Thank you. We're glad you found it useful.
YES - THIS.
Thanks for watching!

Same!

It's tri-sodium citrate because it's for triathlons
Nerd. We see you. 🤗

I purchased the trial in the FEED as a NUUN sub. Way too salty for me. I would never use this for CHOs.
We feel you!
Why not just use this in your drink for electrolytes, and maurten gels for carbs

Not everyone is aware of the changes or how low-carb the new drink is. It also reduces the options for athletes who wanted to use only on-course drinks for their race nutrition.
Salty crystal light, LOL, that's what I've been calling it
Bingo!

Unfortunately it's because Gatorade is discontinuing Gatorade Endurance.

If only it came in orange, or fruit punch, or lemon lime. Not a mango or margarita person.
Yeah, flavors were a bit 'off' for us, too.
