Good stuff Jon, thanks for sharing! In my experience, the line between freelancer and production company really depends on your types of clients and what they're asking for. I think it's perfectly reasonable that some of us have to float between the two (freelancer/production company). I think if you can find both types of clients that's a win!

Jon... I can't tell you how much I appreciate this post. I feel like you really helped clarify a struggle I have been having as my own freelance work has evolved. However, from being a writer for hire in my field, to anticipating correctly that case studies and blog posts and Department of Education reports we're going to go to the wayside thanks to large language models. So I resurrected my video production career after a hiatus. Your tone and direct commentary about the things that make you happy and the thing that you're good at that you want to get better at really resonated. I too don't want to pursue things that are not my passion-whether that be the craft or the content itself. The way you paired your head and your heart in this video was extremely helpful to me. Best of luck in 2025 and I promise to keep in touch.

Production Company - heavier lift but bigger gains. But I also find that it's sometimes less collaborative and you can fall in to the trap of "you only know what you know" you get stuck in your ways and can stop learning if you aren't experiencing other people's productions.

Appreciate the insight. 2024 was a valuable year for me in that it helped me really narrow down the scope re: the kinds of jobs I'm willing to accept more of, and the kinds that I'm not. 2025 will be my first full year in NYC so I'm excited to see how the work will look like despite a slow first few weeks. I'm back in to the throw of things now and will be wishing for a slow period again soon enough, haha.

Great Video... I always love 45mm remus, but after releasing 50mm it was little sharp but 45 gives me the soul but 50mm feel slightly flat compare to 45mm. what do you think ?

possibly a stupid question but i'm trying to understand why the 180 shutter angle is such a big deal? So it allows the camera to automatically adjust to the other settings with a correct shutter speed?

Would you consider to buy the RS3 PRO Combo over the RS4 Combo for the same price? I'll be using the follow focus motor for fun stuff, even in the vertical mount I'm thinking if the less 1.5kg payload is worth of the native vertical mount

I just got the Amaran Spotlight SE (but of course I got the 19° lens, silly me), and a little mini spotlight for the Molus X60. It’s def fun to play with. I need to get some fun creative stuff together as well. Gotta hit you up next time I’m in NY and get this meetup going! Maybe it’s better to wait when it’s warmer lol.

That sensor is special! There's just something about it. I've had it in the A7R II, A7R III and RX1R II and I prefer the look to the later 33mp and 61mp Sony sensors. Can't put my finger on it, but it's there.

I heard that the FX3M2 is expected to be released soon, but I'm holding off on buying a new FX3 until it comes with exceptional IBIS, like what the Osmo Pocket or GoPro offers. Do you know when a new version of the FX3, one that doesn't require a gimbal, might be released? Perhaps an FX3M3, FX3M4, or even an FX3M5?

How's the handling noise of the mic when you're hand holding it?

We run a RS2 in the Tilta ring. It gets pretty heavy when we put a monitor, transmission system, and a V mount battery. The easy rig really helps out when we have a full day of gimbaling.

Another banger, dude! I use the RS2 pro with largely the same components and I feel like for anything in the FX3 universe it all flies the same.

Nice! This thing has probably saved me a lot of pain. It really does help on those full gimbal days.
