Raynor Reads Stuff (Debs)
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 ก.ค. 2021
Hi, my name is Debs and I’m just an aging book lover sitting in a shed talking books 📚
I’m a former journalist who took voluntary redundancy in late 2021 who has yet to figure out what to do with her life (apart from read).
I will read pretty much anything (but I’ll only read Category Romance during GarbAugust).
My preferred genres are literary fiction, classics, crime and thrillers -especially Scandi Noir - westerns, horror, translated literature, sci fi and children’s books.
For non-fiction I enjoy history, travelogues, politics and economics amongst others.
I plan to post two to three times a week… and sometimes that actually happens 😁.
Expect some randomness.

What a lovely stack of chonkers! I do love a big book, but I don't read as many these days as I used to. Back when I really didn't read that many books each year I'd go for big old tomes all the time, but now I want to read lots of different things I tend to limit my big book consumption so I can fit more books in each month. Though I did manage a couple of thousand-page beasts this year, and I really enjoyed diving into those long and detailed stories. Have fun with your beefcakes! 😂
Loved your responses to this one, Debs! Great to see the rest of the Book Shack 😀Fab little den you've got there. I'm just preparing my answers for my own responses, and you and I share the same view on white bookshelves... we have big set in our living room, and they are an absolute nightmare for dust! Sure they make our dark living room a little brighter, but I'm not a fan of the amount of cleaning they require! Gorgeous cover picks - as you'd expect, I'm also a fan of the linocut style cover art 😉Great video!
I need to read Michael Morpurgo next year. His work's been on my tbr for a lobg time. Thanks for the reminder.
Where do you buy all them in pulp
Hi Debs! I always enjoy your videos, and I don't always comment...but I wanted you to know that I like being here in this space with you. Wendell Berry is great...I don't own any of his books of poetry but what I've read online I've enjoyed. I'm behind on adding to the conversation in the Piñeiro Project thread on Voxer but hopefully will share thoughts soon. 🫶🏽
I haven't read the Morpurgo you mentioned but I have read Private Peaceful and it was stunningly heartbreaking. I definitely want to read his other work. I love Wendell Berry.
That Tales from Nowhere book sounds really interesting. I'd probably really enjoy something like that. I've read a couple of similar sounding books before and found them quite enjoyable.
Wendell Berry is on my list - one book of essays in my stack - but I keep putting him off. Maybe we could arrange some sort of BookTuber meeting in Equatorial Guinea - it might be lovely.
Just eating up that RWYO list!
Looks like a wide ranging selection for sure. I need to try some Wendell Berry sometime.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed the poetry, Debs. Michael Morpurgo sounds wonderful! You continue to make great progress on the read what you own challenge!
haha you inspired me to post a wrap up as well ! so thank you for that :) loved the videoooo
So happy youre enjoying _Against the Day,_ Debs 😊
The 1200+ pager I never see mentioned in 'A Glastonbury Romance' by John Cowper Powys. I read it because the late Phil Rickman always said it was a major influence on his work. I read it, and enjoyed it, but it dragged. Where other authors would say one thing was like another thing, Powys always listed around half a dozen things it was like. It dragged a bit.
Some great sounding books here. I love The Woman in Black and War Horse so interested in the Susan Hill and the Michael Morpurgo. I'm glad you've had a good week. I started a bit of an unhaul/reorganisation project yesterday, inspired by the bookshelf tag that is going around. May have bitten off more than I can chew...
I'm going by page numbers rather than books I think on the 'read your own challenge , as the first few have been higher than the estimated page count.
That third edition Norton is wonderful, but it’s a book I prefer to dip into occasionally. Reading it straight through is an undertaking. This sounds like a great batch of mammoths. I have confidence you can do it - I’ve heard good things about Vikram Seth’s opus.
Hi Debs been following your excellent channel for a few weeks now. I like your cosy and relaxing style of book chats and the various genres .I am hoping to read Shogun by James Clavell some time.
@@johnmooney9403 thank you John that’s very kind of you. If you fancy Buddy reading Shogun next year some time just yell 😊
Biggest book I have read is the Count of Monte Cristo. I have read Shogun three times. Love James Clavell. Best wishes and happy reading. I guess you may be a while.
Count of Monte Cristo is a Masterpiece. Amazing classic.
I like big books too.
@@anotherbibliophilereads I would have tagged you Greg but you were already tagged by Al 😊
Ah, the Ulysses six, imprisoned unjustly, forced to read experimental fiction... Maybe I should start a campaign to get them released in time for Christmas? Back in time for Clement C Moore
Haha. Free the Ulysses Six 😂😂
@@clarepotter7584 This did make me laugh 😃 The name does have that connotation...
I don’t realize we where imprisoned. 😂
If you'd like someone to tag along for "Good Soldier, Svejk," let me know. I've always wanted to read it. Also wanted to let you know that I saw your tag a couple of days ago. I'll try my best to film it before the end of the year.
Yay. That would be great ❤. We haven’t read together for ages. No rush on that tag, I’m just curious how you organise your book shelves 😊
I love big books! I have some big books planned for next year and I have no business adding more, but I had the nerve to pick up an almost 900 page book at the library yesterday (Kin by Miljenko Jergović). I love that you weighed the books.
Ooh I would love to know your plans Arianne 😊
This is actually perfect for me because next year I'm not setting a normal reading goal, I am aiming to read chunky books all year. I did read Shogun this year and it was mostly fun.
That’s a great plan for next year. Hope you can lift your heavyweights 😂
Well, that was a lot of fun! That's a lot of pages. Thanks for tagging me, Debs. I'll get to work on this. I do not believe I have as many big books planned for the coming year. I guess we'll see....
I was surprised by mine. It makes a change for me to tag you 😂. I’ll look forward to seeing your version 😊
Nice pile of books Debs! I have some lofty goals for next year as well so I may give this tag a go. Thanks for sharing your books.
Yes give it a go. It was great fun. Thanks Bill 😊
There are some significant doorstops there Debs 🙈 I also have Shogun on my TBR and it is all Olly’s fault 😉
Olly has to take responsibility for lots of things 😂. I’ll see if I can get through them all 😊
This is my idea of a bookish nightmare 😂 I don't like big books. I may be missing out but I avoid anything over 600 pages. Very fun tag.
Haha. I often have one big book on the go but I know it’s not everyone’s bag. I did enjoy this tag 😊
I really loved the covers you chose to show us - the way they built on eachother was really lovely. I've also got some shelves that I screwed into the wall. They've been up for about 2 or 3 years, but I'm still convinced that they'll come crashing down sooner or later!
It’s weird because it wasn’t until I’d collected them up and put them on the table together that I realised how similar they were. But then the progression became obvious. This is obviously a style I enjoy very much 😊
I enjoyed hearing your plans. I usually do this tag but missed the moment this year as struggling to film tags.
When I finally read Slaughterhouse 5 it was not what I expected and I found it really rewarding.
Such great plans! I'm excited to be in on some of these same reading adventures with you. Cheers!
I’m with you on spiders. I couldn’t have that book in the house.
Hideous isn’t it 😊
I loved seeing your setup. I know you feel it’s not enough but it looks great.
It’s a bit chaotic at the moment David but it’s a lovely cosy place and I do enjoy it 😊
Interesting answers Debra. Funnily enough no one that has done the tag so far says they write their name in their books, or indeed the price paid. Two TH-cam Channel makers have said however they might well write the price paid in the future. For why indeed? It is certainly not an ideal reason to pick out a book from your shelves.
It was a great tag Richard and fun completing it 😊
Pat is such a sweetie! What a wonderful gift she sent you!
I love the book shack, Debs! Wonderful to see all the way around it. I'm sorry that Phil drops his phone on your head, but your telling the story did make me laugh out loud. I can totally see you rearranging all of the furniture in your daughter's bedroom as she slept. I love the covers on the books that you chose as ones that you love, and yes, you definitely do have a style.
I love my book shack too ❤. I suppose I should think myself lucky Phil doesn’t use his iPad to read 😂😂
Nice to get a full look around the shack!
It’s in a bit of a mess at the moment but still my favourite place 😊
Fun video, Debs. I'd advise against reading John Wyndham's Web if you are an arachnophobe. I don't like book covers that are from the movie and 'stickers' that can't be removed, either.
Thanks Jim. I’ll remember to avoid Web. I’m glad we are in agreement about movie covers and ‘stickers’ 😊
i just read Landmarks for one of my courses, love it and love the cover!!!
It’s a great book and a great cover 😊
Impressive collection. I also love the covers you choose, especially the J L Carr. I am attracted to houses on covers or gates, don't know why, just like them very much. I really enjoy hearing about and seeing book collections.
Thanks 😊. Funny isn’t it, I like churches but had no idea those book covers would be so similar
I loved the covers of the books with churches and landscapes. The spider on the horror book was terrifying.
When I put them all together I couldn’t believe how similar they were 😊. Absolutely no need for that spider!
Absolutely agree on your answer to “too many books”!
😂. Definitely no such thing
I very much enjoyed your video today Debs. You had me laughing and I loved the tour of your library. Thanks for sharing my friend. 😊
Thank you so much for tagging me. I really enjoyed doing this tag 😊
Hi Debs. The face that accompanied "He drops it on my head. Just saying" was hilarious 😅😅!
I have been conked on the head so many times 😂😂
That's so funny, I looked at the first two books with lovely covers and thought 'Steeplechasing' has a cover like that and lo and behold it's the third book!
I certainly seem to have a style that I like. I didn’t even realise how similar they were until I saw them all together 😂
Hello Raynor. How are you? I just wanted to let you know that I have tagged you for the Shelf Respect tab. Of course, it’s completely voluntary so please, don’t feel obligated. Love you videos and your red glasses. 😊
@@daubiebooks63 how cool. Thank you very much. I shall look forward to doing that 😁. And thank you for your lovely comment. I really appreciate you stopping by 🙏
Sarah J Maas is a strange problem. One wants to support her, because there's no sane reason she should be banned. On the other hand I have no interest in reading her.
@@davebrzeski that is it exactly. I’ve sort of talked myself into reading all of the books banned stat-wide in Utah. But there are six of hers and I’m struggling after two 😂. Maybe I should give myself a break
@@RaynorReadsStuff lovely yo support Maas but life's too short to read an extended series that you don't love.
Thank you for doing our tag Debs! I have Istanbul by Orhan Pamuk on my shelf and hope to get to it next year!
@Uncommon_Reader thank you for creating it, I thought it was a fabulous fun tag. I have Istanbul unread too. Maybe I’ll get around to it next year because I loved Snow. Happy reading to you 😊
My plans for the rest of this year are proving to not be going to plan, so I think that means I don't have a plan now. I'm also thinking about 2025, but am thinking that I am possibly trying to take on more than I can possibly achieve and really need to set something achievable!
@@AlansReads I think it can be very sensible for the plan to be ‘there is no plan’. You have one plan (I hope)… to buddy read Lord of the Flies with me 👍🏼😁
@@RaynorReadsStuff Yes, and I have found my copy! So more or less ready when you are!
