The 1992 Maxell Juke Box: Repackaged and Recycled?
In this video, I take a look at the 1992 Maxell Juke Box, a low-end Type I cassette tape. This was only released in Japan, and only in 10-minute and 20-minute variants, so what exactly were these made for? I talk about its history and design, then I test it on my Pioneer T-D7 cassette deck. The song used is from the TH-cam Audio Library, and all audio is completely raw and unprocessed. I hope you like it. Thanks for watching, and I hope you have a happy new year! Looking forward to more in 2024!

In this video, I take a look at the 1998 TDK CDing2, a low-end Type II cassette tape. 1997 = Kohap, it is not a BASF anymore. for type II they still had a backstock of BASF CS mechanism and loaded their ferric cobalt tape into proper cassettes, the type I however - there is a problem - the reelhubs are not round, the tape dances sideways. the Emtec ferric is much closer to the AGFA formulation that was adopted after BASF acquired AGFA's magnetic division in 1991 - the tape is very good - noisy, but very flat, so both dolby C or even S will not cause significant /audible misstracking. just remember - these tapes require very low BIAS lavel, could be out-of-dial for a 90s' deck factory setup for TDK D or maxell UD (yamaha's did so for example) try this iside a few 1988-1992 yamaha's / naks or technics - I would never "test" tapes with a 1997 deck. it WILL only work with TDK and maxell tapes unless internally re-set to an older formulation.

  • @biuroAether
    @biuroAether 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    shocking? havent you noticed that AGFA and FUJI s been major's manufacturers in both markets? come on (: 90% of Konica cassettes were manufactured by Forward. the remaining odd batches were Saehan made. the reelhub pattern, that some ppl call "goldstar" hub is quite infamous for a reason - these used inside Konica cassettes were perfectly fine, the same mould was used by Emtec, but those were flawed, and they are (very often) deformed to a point were they have to replaced, as the tapepack doesnt fit inside the mechanism which gets jammed - and the tape travels sideways. BASF magnetic division did not exist since december 1996 - it was just a name bought and used by Kohap up until 2002, later dropped and replaced by Emtec - your BASF cassette shown here has NOTHING to do with the German BASF major. forget any auto CAL with Forward tapes - they are far more off standard than SKMA/SAEHAN tapes - if you want this one to compete against D / UR / HF etc - you have to use a fully manual deck (or even fiddle with the rec EQ // timeconstant electronics ;) - I used these inside a GX75 and it "liked" it. I know this is youtube (squashed audio), BUT having used tons of Forward cassettes this one sounds heavily overbiased to me - the tape has a natural rise in the HF - getting rid of that slight boost ruins the recording. the treble is not the biggest issue here - if you focus on the kick drum you'll hear that excess bias level completely ruins the mids and gives you that horrible 160-300 Hz ooomph on the kick drum's tail.

    I tried setting my asa to 300 when my film speed is 200. It underexposed my photos. Ive read online that it should be the other way around. If you shoot film speed 200 then you should set asa to 100.

    • @ARandomOven
      @ARandomOven 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nadelainc790 That's correct. Technically, if you're shooting at 200 ASA, with a properly-working camera, you *should* set the ASA to 200 as well. However, because of the voltage difference in the battery, my camera's meter tended to overexpose by about a stop, so I compensated by setting the ASA to "underexpose" by a stop to get the correct metering. It differs from camera to camera.

    You claim that AR was the successor to AD in 1985, so why does the label on my AD-X tapes match the design language of the ADR you claim came out in 85? Something doesn't add up. Why would the ADX use the exact same label design as it's successor if the successor came out 3+ years after? I'm very skeptical of the idea that the ADX was discontinued in the early 80s. Maybe you're only talking about 46 minute variants? The tape I'm currently playing is an AD-X 60, with a label that's exactly the same as the AD-R shown in this video (aside from the letter X of course).

    Hi For completeness you can tell the date of manufacture from the serial number. . Serial Number (II 2096684) shows its a Minister II (not III or D) manufactured in Japan (some where manufactured in Hong Kong) in February 1969 (2 09) and was the 6684th to be manufactured that month. . By the way don't leave it exposed to light when not in use, helps to prolong the life of the selenium photocell. . Sincerely and in good faith Martin Reid Lancashire

    The cassette is slightly better - more organic sounding upper mids and treble. But if you're a working musician with an electric guitar or bass in the ready on your lap, your instruments can destroy the sound quality of your cassettes by obliterating anything above 3,000-hz when placed on the pickups.😕

    I'm still trying to figure out how come the prices for AD-X's and Maxell XLI-S's are so ridiculous on eBay. Yes, they're both really good tapes, but there's nothing precious about them. I mean, they're still Type I's, albeit really good Type I's. They're good, but not 80-bucks good, and that seems to be the general asking price for most of them I've seen. Those big hubs were probably for either the European or Japanese markets; we never got those in the States.

    Metal cassettes were SUPERB but being a physical medium it tended to erode the covering of the tape itself with time, that doesn't happen with mp3 which is digital. I still miss those womderful days of great music and amazing art covers something that is totally gone today. There is nothign comparable to the beatles and their iconic abbey road picture for example.

  • @mertonnephake
    @mertonnephake 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Actually, even 90 minute cassettes are thinner to their 60 minutes counterparts. I remember when as a kid I made about a 70 minute cassette (to fit a particular album) of a 90 minute one and the diameter of wound up tape was much smaller compared to the 60 minute conterpart. It was also apparent they would not be able to fit 90 minutes of tape to the shell had it the same thickness as in a 60 minute cassette. Who knows if the thickness was not entirely dependent on the length, so that even your 10 minute tape may be thicker than a 60 minute one. You could check it out by measuring ten minutes on a HF60 if the tape on the right reel takes up the same diameter. By the way, not only colour of tapes on your HF10 and HF120 is different, the shells are different too, see the parts next to record notches, the shell of HF120 may be modified to be identified as Type II and on the video it looks like your HF120 doesn’t have the sheet of metal bellow the pressure pad, so it likely comes from a different batch or whatever. I noticed they stopped putting that metal sheet in cassettes later on.

    Wish I had some more money back then. Then I would go for the high quality tapes with darker tapes (more metal-dust coated on the tape). So I would have high-quality sound from those good Radio days in 80s and 90s. 🙂 Anybody out there who actually use the Dolby button back then? I never used it, because I thought it removed way too much treble. BTW: Anybody who has a youtube link to a tape playing on 120 min? And also possible ones on 90 Min. and 100 Min.? I could then use those videos for making something visual for my collection of tapes, when uploading to youtube.... Thanks a lot. Krusty BTW2: It should be a recording of the front view, so people can see the tape slowly go from the left wheel to the right wheel, when people hearing the music. Basically simulating they are playing a tape. BTW3: Thanks for creating this video mate. Regards from Krusty in Denmark.
