Hello and welcome!
For those just swinging by for the first time, I started Shmuptopia to give games in the STG genre their own spotlight. I have an immense passion for STGs that started in 2018 and really wanted to begin spreading shmupwareness to the darkened corners of the planet and far beyond.
I am pretty much exclusively on Switch these days and have been for a while but aim to branch out more and more over time.
I offer First Looks, 1cc runs, reviews, guides, and more. I always respond to the stellar comments left by the incredible community we have growing here so never hesitate to drop something but please keep it appropriate. I love pouring my time and energy into all things SHMUPS so let's have an epic time together!
All my 1cc runs are real. No edits, save states, etc.
If you like my videos, free free to like and consider subscribing to keep up to speed with all future projects.
With all of that out of the way, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride through the cosmos!

Hey, everybody.
Today, we're taking a look at Omega Fighter for the Nintendo Switch. This is one I've been meaning to come back to and talk about for quite some time. I wasn't sure whether it would be a review or something just highlighting what I like but I decided to cover the basics and share a few pointers here and there.

I love this game, but the final boss is completely destroying me. It's interesting to see in this video that apparently the first burst shot he uses in each of the stages can be avoided by standing still (apparently).
If it helps, this link is to a method I created while I was originally playing Vasara some years ago. It's a no-bomb, no-miss, no-Vasara method and you may be able to see a few other things that might assist you. Let me know if you have any questions. th-cam.com/video/_u1MnJ_Dcoc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jQAWAPumceWj2j-a
@@Shmuptopia Thanks for the other video, it will definitely help me. I'm playing the Steam version recently and it doesn't have save states, so training the final boss requires playing the entire last level again each time, lol. Now that I've seen your video I don't have any more excuses not to 1cc the game, I'm going to start working towards this goal.
Doesn't this game have a True Last Boss? Why didn't it appear?
At the time, I was only going for a clear without the to, which is optional. At the start of the final stage, you're essentially given a choice as to whether you encounter the tlb or not.
@Shmuptopia Oh, so that's that option for, I never understood what it was, thank you !
Happy to help! @@DigitallezSTG
old shmup with slowmo, proximity-based scoring and has kinda manic or bullethellish pace in a sense, with ton of slow bullets on screen. surely was game ahead of its time in some areas, and the music is awesome, great to see it covered! gradius syndrome though is making this too hard to play for me without save states, it seems too hard to recover from continue at 7/8 stages
90 DOLLARS? man i jus got a steal on this for 25
That's a wild price for sure! Thanks for checking this out.
The scoring mechanic is totally Ketsui 15 years before it became a thing.
For sure, and thanks for tuning in!
A great version of the Commodore 64 classic Uridium. I wish this developer would remake Andrew Braybrook’s other classic C64 shmup Paradroid.
Thanks for checking this out! I'm not familiar with that title, but am intrigued to look it up.
wow yeah i like the look of this. gotta try it. thank god for arcade archives, would be sweet if one day they drop some physical releases
Interestingly enough, the ACA NEOGEO Collection Volumes 1 and 2 were announced not too long ago. They'll have a variety, of course - not just shooters but at least we're finally seeing things go in this direction! Thanks for checking this out.
No way I’d be able to play with that lol, it is cool though. For me with switch, I just take my pro controller on the go……also @Dace, is that you #3 on the leaderboards in Dead End City on switch?! Says Dace so I’m assuming so lol. I really enjoyed that one, 1ccd last week
Yeah, that's me. I didn't do any serious attempts at score play for DEC but did some light score runs for a couple of days after the initial clears. It's such a solid game, man! Thanks for checking this out - I always appreciate your comments!
Thanks for covering this one. UPL made so many interesting games that I’m surprised they weren’t better known back in the day.
Yeah, they've got some really cool ones like Koutesu Yousai Strahl from 1992!
My favorite EastAsiaSoft shoot em up as of now still waiting for the Soldner X Collection to come to Switch both of those releases are insane.
One of if not UPL's best releases
UPL has some solid titles for sure, man. Thanks for watching!
@Shmuptopia have you seen the trailer for Strania: The Stella Machina EX that's releasing the 23rd on Switch? Omg the Einhander vibes G. Rev is the developer they made the incredible Border Down so hopefully in the future they bring that to Switch as well i wouldn't hesitate to buy it im also waiting for Under Defeat HD to come to the North American eShop as well and Soldner X Collection supposed to release sometime this year what a time to be a shmup lover
the game was designed (uncredited) by late Fukio Mitsuji, famous by bubble bobble, maybe that's why it kinda stands out among other UPL games.
Sorry, even in just the first 5 seconds, how did you get to 9.6 multiplier in just 1 lock on? Is that type Z privilege? I've been playing type II mainly. Or maybe I just don't understand how the multiplier works...
No apologies necessary, this is something many people struggle with initially and getting it solid takes time. Just a few weeks ago, someone was having a really rough time getting things where they wanted them in stage 1. It's been ages since I played, but from what I recall you want to do as much point-blanking as possible since this charges the break meter much faster plus do full lock-ons as often as possible. It requires a very aggressive approach, but with time, it'll feel more natural. Let me know if you need anything else and all the best!
@@Shmuptopia I'll try point blanking more the next time I boot up! Otherwise my main concern is just maintaining a high multiplier because I keep getting it to small values like 2.4x or 4.8x and then dropping it lol. But when I watch good players they get up to 9.6x really quickly and even hold it there for a while
Hell yeah lol
Its good that you know that you like but i honestly dont like the fact that you dont properly address why people dont like this stick. When a button or something is dead, you have do some soldering to replace it whereas mayflash f300 is $60 and much more future-proof and solder-free in that manner. Unless soldering already a hobby for someone, its why people try to steer others away from it
Hey thanks for making this! 🤘Hope you also enjoyed the music :)
oh btw, there are unlocks in this game. One of them does give you stage practice
Absolutely, it gave me a medieval fantasy arcade sort of feeling which was really neat. That mixed with the visuals reminded me of Battle Axe in ways. Thanks for popping by and great work with the music!
Hey Dace HAPPY NEW YEAR🎉
Thanks, and same to you!!
Shmups have so much untapped potential in the licensed game space. So many movies, TV, comics/anime whose aesthetic would map easily onto a shooter and draw more players to the genre.
I think so too. It's pretty interesting to see how Shmups have largely remained an isolated thing. With how many shooters have you control a character and not a ship of some sort, you could easily have a game for any given anime series or story from books. Maybe someday we'll see a sweet Harry Potter shooter or Care Bears. Thanks for watching!
I'll wait for the elite version and compare prices compared to sourcing individual parts, but I respect the hussle for homie to get multiple girlfriends to get discount codes just to buy a stick (unless I misheard that part).
Great leverless, although the buttons could be even further splitted apart for my taste and the bottom could have some sort of rubbers.
Thanks for this these tips.I have a question is the switch version of this game harder then the Snes version it seems to be the case.
Thanks for watching and great question. I'm not actually sure though. Given what I've heard in terms of other Switch versions of games, it wouldn't surprise me.
Thats not a bad idea. A bigger ball top would make it feel that much better.
The Life Insurance item is not an extra life; it only prevents your Medal from getting halved when you continue :( For no continue runs, that item is a complete dud, as if it was made as a joke for something. It only appears when you enter the shop with full life stock. Horrible!
Really strange but definitely good to know. Thanks for sharing that. I'd like to eventually get back into this one. Trust you had a pleasant holiday season.
Interesting. I think the best use for such a small controller would be on the Steam Deck, on the go during a long trip.
The portability takes things to a new level for sure, even though this won't be a main controller for most people, if anyone. Thanks for watching!
Someone needs to win Evo using this.
It's got to happen now.
Nice review. Now, could you tells us a bit about your finger-tattoos? Mayan?
Not Mayan or anything else, actually. Self-designed just based off of something that came to me in the moment which was further based on an art-style I do. The reason behind the tattoos is to honor my relationship with a percussion instrument called the Udu, which I've been playing since 2010. Thanks for checking this out!
@@Shmuptopiathanks. Looks really cool.
to be fair, crimzon clover arcade players must use a NESICA id card to gain the ability to unlock the type-Z ship
Cool novelty pad, not for me but I’m glad quirky products like this exist. 😊
Definitely. Following the development of this has been an interesting ride the last while. Thanks for watching!
This thing work with a iPhone? I can’t find where to buy it.
I don't think it's iPhone compatible, but I'd need to double-check that. The current batch, however, is sold out. Layershift on Twitter/X announces when new batches will be available. Trust this helps.
Holy cow, hey Dace!! Long time, no see (I still the Switch and Twitch days). How's it been? And it looks like Ima have to scoop one of those up to go with my Ambernic 35XXSP Edit: 1:58 lack of shoulder buttons is a plus, really. I'll try it in my wallet
Hey, man. It's been ages for sure. Things are busy on this end but no complaints! Yeah, there are still L1 and ZL via the hotkeys for those who still need them.
Good stuff!
Thanks so much!
Doesn’t look like something I’d use all the time but it’s definitely cool to see something like this be so useful
It's been cool seeing how slim they've been able to get this thing. I've followed the development for a while and it's definitely exciting stuff even if most won't end up grabbing/using one. Thanks for checking this out!
Not something I'll use., but cool little gadget nonetheless.
Love it! I thought this was going to be a joke about a micro transaction heavy pay-to-win shmup. 😂
Ha, that's the next project!
Also: why do I not see it on their Etsy page
Last batch sold out. LayerShift announces batches in advance on Twitter, though.
Is this Bluetooth or wired only?
Wired only as far as I know. I'd be blown away to find out otherwise. Thanks for jumping in!
I can accept this clickbait
Couldn't resist playing the crowd for this one! The first and last time I utilize such a stunt. Thanks for checking this out!
@@Shmuptopia It's all good. It wasn't like it was a big lie or anything. After all, it is the size of a card.
@@psymagearcadeFor sure, and it was for laughs as opposed to getting attention. LayerShift got a kick out of it, anyway.
you're a beast Dace. haha
Thanks for popping by! Trust you're having a stellar weekend.
@@Shmuptopia always. Happy New Year
@@its_elser Thanks and same to you.
That wouldn't be too bad of an alternative to a Hori Fighting Commander. Interesting. But you wouldn't have shoulder buttons. OmniArcade has done some really cool projects. I installed their Odin V2 in a fightstick recently and it's awesome. Also, they made their own pushbuttons called the O720 that sound awesome, but I don't think they're available right now.
I believe I've seen those buttons on the shop before and wondered what they'd be like. Thanks for checking this out, Psy!
@@Shmuptopia There are a lot of these buttons out there nowadays with MX switches, and that button is OmniArcade's take on it. In fact, I just ordered some more Sitong MX buttons (ST-M4 model) recently after using them on a VSHG. The Crown 202s, the Seimitsu Alutimo line, and the OSBMX buttons all use MX switches as well.
That thing is adorable, but hand cramps galore after extended play! 😂
Thanks for watching!
The 1CreditCard
Lol
Nice
A card?.I am intrigued
Cool ch.. I'm actually wondering if this stick would be compatible with retro games I downloaded from ps5 like Ms Pacman, galaga, also super Mario, donkey kong games on switch? Not sure if anyone would know this. But if so, would be very helpful. Thanks!
Interesting you ask about this because I was just on the Mayflash website yesterday to double-check something for someone else and I came across part of the product description (only specified for the Elite model though) that stated "DO NOT use F700 Elite on other types of PS5 games like Shooting games, Sport games, or Action games." I don't see why the normal model would differ since the Elite is typically just using Sanwa parts as the primary or only difference. But perhaps this helps you or answers the question. On Switch, it should function like any other stick. It's odd because I've never seen a specification on a website like this before but I'm also only on Switch, so I never face PS5 related issues.
Meeeeeeeeeeeeep, this was such a great listen! :D It's awesome that you two view shmups as a lifestyle, and it showed with everything that was talked about throughout this episode! Pardon me as I yap about stuff that resonated with me in this interview, heheh ^^; Spiders' humility at the beginning with wanting to do his appearance justice was fun to hear (and I can probably relate too, aaaaaaaaaa) I can *super* relate to drama being present within one's shmup runs, it's something I've been experiencing as of late too! Had an Eschatos [Original, Normal] 1CC attempt where I was scoring better than I thought I could score and made it to the final boss with 5 lives, but I just wiped out because I wasn't familiar enough with dealing with their attacks and now I'm like "gosh, am I going to expect myself to be on pace with my 12M PB as I continue going for my Normal 1CC? Am I gonna get thrown off my game because of this?" cause I'm so scorerun-pilled ;u; I actually thought Eschatos dished out extends based on score, but I eventually learned that it's based off of enemies killed, but I still cope with my scorerunning self and go "well a good offense is a good defense" when it comes to killing enemies quickly so I don't have to deal with dodging their patterns for longer than I need to... Granted, I mostly play for safety on Stage 3 and Stage 5 with some of their hecked sections, but I'm still thinking about that score, to the point where I sometimes go for WonderWitches I shouldn't quite be going for because I haven't built up their value in previous sections... Also learned that each extra life gives 1M points at the end in Normal, so maybe the real score strats are survival, haha! The talk about genre baggage was neat! Spiders mentioning the distrust in some developers being the reason for said baggage checks out. Somewhat related, but I liked how I didn't even consciously think about Seaside Drive in UFO 50 having inertia until some shmup peeps pointed it out several days after launch day! Might need to play it more to form a more solid opinion, but it feels like it does what it can with its patterns given the existence of inertia, and while there could always be visual effects to sell the car drifting, I guess the game's valid for having intertia! In general, the openness to new things being tried out in the genre is appreciated, and I remember also pondering about why one wouldn't always be firing all the time in shmups too (until I came up with examples like Ikaruga's color chaining and general shmups that have elements of milking and/or linking enemies together in a certain time frame to chain them, as well as optimal positioning for revenge bullets) Lastlyyy, Spiders' enthusiasm to score by any means necessary at 1:01:37 was fun and based to hear, and I liked the mention at around 1:08:27 of trying to have some kind of evaluation metric for shmups to really gauge how eventful moments can be in runs!
Thanks for such a well-rounded comment and I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed the session. These chats are always a blast to do and I'm happy to share them with the community. Thanks for checking this out! Additionally, I'll soon be releasing supporter-exclusive chats through my website (for "Plugged In" members specifically) where we revisit guests from previous episodes and get into additional topics/material - which I'm really looking forward to!
I was blown away when I saw this at an arcade in Los Angeles many years ago. I always give this game a go when I go to Hey in Akihabara. Hopefully the Hamster folks add Macross Plus and Ultra X Weapons to the ACA lineup. Side note: If you buy an ACA game after 15:00 UTC Wednesday, you can play the Caravan mode, and if you make the ranking, you’ll get a shoutout when Hamster does its livestream-usually at 10:00 UTC on Thursday.
Thanks for the information. Someone mentioned something similar some years back but not with the same level of specification, so that's really cool to know!
I have 2 Hori mini 4 for quite some time now and they worked great for years, PS3, PS4 and raspberry Pi. But for the last few months the rubber buttons (the ones on top) now are very hard to register. Almost impossible to use. Shame, I loved these controllers
Is this happening to both to an equal degree?
@@Shmuptopianot in the same degree, but both, yes. The options button is almost 100% gone.
Does it have a program button to set combos?
It's been some time since I last had this one out, and I didn't ever explore that potential myself at the time but a brief skim of the product page on the Mayflash website doesn't mention anything about it being an option.
That's wild and awesome!
Very good review
Glad you enjoyed it!
