Guston is great. Amazing to see the variety of work he created before delving into his idiosyncratic bigfoot cartoon style.
For another example of cartoon-inspired fine art check out the Hairy Who (a group of Chicago artists from the 1960s).

I think Guston’s figurative works are more ruminations or meditations rather than fixed expressions of metaphor or point of view. So for instance, the klan hooded figures can function as an Everyman figure as well as their more obvious connotation. They speak to all humanity’s culpability or capability in the commission of atrocities. There’s also a lot of visual puns going on, in particular the way that eyes in the hoods are painted identically to windows in buildings. So I think there’s a strong existential element to his work, as we all peer out at the world from behind the safety of our mask.

Guston was always very candid about the artists who influenced him: Piero, Mantegna, Beckmann, De Chirico, Herriman, Disney, etc. Check on page 71 of the book you are studying in your video for the Crumb story

I think pure abstraction allowed Guston to find his own idiom as a painter, which he then was able to employ as a figurative artist.

About the myth that Crumb inspired Guston: Guston stated that he was not familiar with Crumb's work till the late 1970s. The similarities are purely coincidental. Guston was influenced by the Krazy Kats comics of Herriman, but not by Robert Crumb.

Actually I read that (and the page you refering to in the other comment)... but somehow the Crumb-myth stuck in my brain nevertheless - at least I changed the description text for the video, thank you
