@cf5053 Sadly, 3 chicks have passed away. There are 5 of them left. Let's hope they will all manage to survive until the fledging day. It is the Hoopoes' survival strategy to lay more eggs so that more chicks could survive. It was raining, not warm enough and the food was probably not enough for all the chicks. Oh, so they passed away in the nest. I didn't know if a predator came and took them or something. So then what happens to their bodies? Do the parents take them out of the nest?

The nestbox is located in Hungary but I do not know any details. I know that this nestbox has been very attractive for Hoopoes, Scops Owls and Starlings. You can watch my video to see how they all wanted to 'book' this nestbox at the same time. This year, Hoopoes chose this box and it goes well. They also chose another box but were not so lucky there as their eggs were destroyed by Rollers. The Rollers wanted to choose a nestbox nearby and did not want to have such neighbors. Thanks a lot for your comments and interest in these birds. In my opinion, Hoopoes are very interesting birds. I have a lot of pictures and videos of them and I saw their nest oncefrom the outside but I have not had a chance to watch everything from the inside until now. Hoopoes are widespread in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. In Africa they are sedentary all year round, those from Europe and Asia usually migrate to Africa for winter. Hoopoes can choose various nests in trees, cliffs or even walls, nestboxes, haystacks, and abandoned burrows etc. The clutch size varies with location: Hoopoes in the north lay more eggs than those in the Southern Hemisphere. In central and northern Europe and Asia the clutch size is around 9-12, whereas it is around 4-5 in the tropics and 7 in the subtropics. There are many interesting facts about their behavior but it is hard to put everything in here. I'll try to give you more info in the future in my videos. @robrff9325 Thanks a lot for watching and asking. 🥰 He is not late. Male Hoopoe is a great provider. He is constantly looking for food in order to be able to feed so many chicks. It is not an easy task but he is great at it. I showed only a few moments when both parents feed the chicks. There are 100 - 160 food deliveries per day so it is pretty amazing.
